It is good good! The portions are big, (but so are every other Chinese restaurant's I suppose), but if you are not used to eating Chinese food its something to note. We had the dinner sized portions, and no other ethnic restaurant has as big portions as Chinese, plus their meat is not ground, it is solid pieces of delicious meat!
They have free food for different size orders (10, 25, and 45 I believe). They have very cheap sushi that is the best for the price. I enjoyed eating there, and the lady was very friendly, seemed to know a lot of the customers that came in, so there are regulars.
I had Salmon sushi (only 3.50) and beef and broccoli. It is not as greasy as other restaurants that I recently went to, and I enjoyed every bite!
I would definitely eat here again.
Typical Chinese fare. Pretty good values can be had, though that's generally the case at most neighborhood Chinese restaurants. Most of the items run on the greasy side, though once again, that's fairly typical. I get the impression that very few of the menu items are homemade or fresh, and that they use the same wholesale distributor as 80% of the Chinese restaurants in the area. Strictly carry-out or dine-in; they have a couple of tables but I certainly wouldn't recommend sticking around. OK in a pinch but you can probably do better if you have the time to read reviews on Yelp about where to go.
Review Source:First off China Star is located in Jefferson Park not Portage Park. I always go to China Star. I love Chinese food. I live a few blocks away from China Star. The service kinda sucks. Their cheap with the napkins and soy sauce. Their delivery service rocked though. The food wasn't bad but they don't give enough for what they charge.
Review Source:A Chineese takeout place in a Polish neighborhood with Spanish translations for the menu items. Â Their lunch specials are a good value, assuming you find the food edible. Â The General Tso's "Chicken" had a pretty bland sauce and very little with it in the way of vegetables. Â If it is indeed made with chicken, it is the darkest chicken meat I have ever seen, and regardless, it tasted wrong. Â The fried rice is fine, and the shrimp in it is larger than you'd expect, but the shrimp also tasted a little rancid. Â I'm not a big egg roll person, but the one that came with this lunch special was especially not special.
The lady at the counter was friendly, although stingy with things like sauce and napkins. Â If all Chineese food tastes the same to you, this might be a good deal. Â It was more food than you could eat (even assuming you could stomach it all) plus a can of pop for $5.50. Â If your taste is even a little discerning, try ordering from nearby Chineese Kitchen instead.
China Star is ok. Â We've ordered a couple times from here, and the food is decent. Â One thing to note is I believe they use MSG in their cooking, so for those looking to avoid that keep this in mind. Â We've tried their fried rice, wonton soup, shrimp egg foo young, fried salt pepper shrimp...all were ok. Â The salt pepper shrimp was, well, a little too salty. Â I know it's supposed to be a little salty, but when your mouth tends to pucker and you feel very thirsty, that's a little too "salt" than pepper on the shrimp! Â Otherwise, nothing special, but ok food.
Overall, okay food, okay service/delivery, okay prices.
The lady on the phone couldn't understand what I was saying and it was hard to understand her. I have no accent but her was very bad. But once I CONFIRMED my order with her it was all good.
Until it was delievered. Once it was delivered it was wrong. So I called up there to ask them about it, the lady was mean and told me she wouldn't refund it and I'd have to pay for another delievery charge unless I came and picked it up.
In short, I paid for something I didn't want and for them to fix it, they would not refund it, and they were going to charge me for the correct item and the delievery charge.
It was alright. Alright describes the food very well I think. Fried Rice Express closed down apparently and I needed a Chinese fix so I yelped Chinese and went with this one.
Delivery was fast, food was hot and the order was correct, so points for that. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are big.
We ordered, wonton soup, general tso's chicken, veggie eggrolls, veggie fried rice and veggie lo mein.
Eggrolls were not good. They were super salty and had a very weird taste to them- almost like a cinnamon taste. Just not good. My lo mein was ok- lots of veggies but just lacked a lot of flavor. The fried rice was the best part- but not the best fried rice I've had.
No compliants on the chicken or soup, but no one was raving. My family and I have been looking for a Chinese place we can call our own so we have been trying some out lately.
I guess we will keep on trying.
Best Chinese carry out in the area.
Hot and sour soup, egg rolls, Garlic shrimp I have had on many occasions and are all very good. Â The portions are nice sized and prices reasonable. Â I go here about once a month and the people who run the place are very friendly.
The key to my review is that it is the best in the area, not much to choose from in Jeff Park. Don't get the Lo Mein.
Still delivery only!
Still fast delivery times!
Best Egg rolls around the area, you have to try the Spicy Salt Shrimp the best! Every time we order we get free stuff, Egg Rolls, Free Delivery or free Crab Rangoon, what a deal!
Someone else needs to review this place, come on yelpers you can do it........
