It IS BYOB and the food is still excellent. They now offer four specialty dishes that you have to order two hours in advance.

Their lunch special is delicious and a lot of food. I recommend the Yu Shan Tofu. With tax it's less then six bucks and more than enough food for a meal. Order the specialty items and you can't go wrong.

I think this is the sort of place that is destined to grade out a bit lower than it should, because the product can be a bit inconsistent and people are more likely to review when they have a bad experience. But 80% of the time the food is fantastic, and much more of the product is homemade than the average Chinese restaurant. Really fast delivery; the storefront can be a bit gloomy. Loss of one star for the inconsistency but otherwise solid.

Ordered from this place for the first time tonight. We recently received one of their menus in our neighborhood and decided to give them a try. What a mistake. The food was aweful and everyone that ate it was not feeling good afterwards.

The shrimp in lobster sauce looked gross in this brown, disgusting liquid that looked like a loose BM. It didn't taste much better.

The combination lo mein was bland and all the meat was either overcooked or tasted spoiled.

General Tso's chicken was decent but not great enough to even warrant two stars. The "chicken" was more breading and so tough to to eat it probably wasn't even worth it.

Sweet and sour chicken again was more bread than chicken but the sauce had a decent flavor.

Soy sauce in the packets wasn't up to par but at least my kids liked the white rice.

Overall this place was terrible. We'll never order from there again and plan on going to our normal place from now on. Epic fail on Chinatown Restaurant.

Used to be good...  Have been ordering from here for over 30 years.  Had the shrimp with vegetables and a couple of eggs rolls.  The egg rolls were too well done.  And the shrimp dish was pathetic.  Mostly broccoli which was overcooked... probably frozen.  Not a piece of bok choy to be found.  The shrimp were rubbery.  This was my favorite place to go for carry out Chinese food.  Not sure if I will risk it again.

I feel compelled to submit a review to "Tony's Chinatown" as the old school local s remember it.  My family moved into the neighborhood 35 years ago and I have fond memories of my brother and I sitting in those super old pleather booths surrounded by the kitschy red Chinese deco.  I used to joke that it's the kind of place that looks like a Chinese dragon threw up all over the walls.  I always said it with affection!  The taste/quality of the food over the span of three decades has remained remarkably consistent and this to me is a good thing.  The family that currently runs the place works hard to remain a staple in the community.  It's not everones cup of oolong tea but it's certainly mine.  Yeah, no one ever eats in.  So whenever I feel like being alone I actually dine in!  It's like my meditation space. Broken only by the occasional smile from one of the family working there to ask if I need anything or ask me if the food is okay.  I do miss the previous owner!  That thousand year old lady must have spoke every language on earth and she kind of scared me wrapping thousands of dollar bills with a rubber band and keeping it in her pocket but somehow i got the feeling she knew what she was doing.  I also joked that She was so old she made her own lightsabres!  Food is meh to the uneducated. It's an aquired taste and yes there are better chinese places not too far.   Service is always friendly.  It's not the healthiest choice but again this isn't the healthiest eating neighborhood either!  It's Chicago, we've got a pub or bar on every street and almost just about as many gyro joints.  If you want healthy you can go to.... Uhhhmmm errr ahhh Susies?!?! =P

The worst Mongolian Beef I've had, and I've tried a *lot*. Dry and over cooked, was over marinated and salty, but overwise, no other spice besides overwhelming soy sauce. Egg roll was decent. There are much better places around, that's for sure.

I really like this place but I just wanna know if I am the only person to actually eat my food there. For the past two years whenever I eat there I am the only one eating in there,I guess everyone just gets their food delivered or take out.

This is quintessential NWside neighborhood Chinese take-out, and as such has satisfied locals like me for a number of years now.  Low in price too.  I ride my bike there (after ordering ahead) with an insulated bag in my basket, and ride back home anticipating the delicious food I'm carrying.  Really good is their Mushroom&Pork Egg Foo Yong!

Other posts allude to changes there in management (if so), and I know well from past experiences this type of thing can be a perpetual source of worry.  Don't worry, one way or the other I confident you'll enjoy and be glad you ordered here.  Nothing's guaranteed forever anyway.

This is the only Chinese (take-out) rest. I can recall calling back later same evening to offer them compliments that everyone thought the food was great, if that means anything.

Lastly if you were a fan of TONY'S PEKING GARDEN Chinese restaurant once on Belmont Ave across from St. Pat's H.S. but gone for a couple years now, you may be interested to know that this CHINATOWN REST. on Lawrence (near Austin, tucked in a corner of a 'lil strip mall) is their heir apparent.  Bon appetit.

no you're not the only one ever to bring them sit-down business I'm witness to that, when I was getting (yes take-out) Teriyaki Beef  (their house specialty) there last week a lady seated herself at table and was waited on in the usual manner.

This place used to be really great until the management changed a year or so ago. The food used to be fabulous and my family would get the Mongolian Beef every time. We hadn't realize the place got sold into new hands and we came back and ordered the same thing - took it home - and were really disappointed. Since then we've moved on, but chances are the other menu options are fine - it was just not what we'd come to expect.
