*sigh* I really wanted to like this place. Â Having never ordered from here before, we placed a large to-go order yesterday with an assortment of dishers to try. Â The hostess was very pleasant and the food came out quickly. Â The place was pleasant and clean. It was pricey (about $35) but not a killer for the amount of food. Â It just - augh! Â Sorry but it sucked.
Breakdown:
Crab Rangoon - 6 large pieces, fried perfectly for a nice crunch. Â The filling was tasty, although no obvious crab or water chestnuts.
Pot Stickers - 6 pieces. Â Looked great outside, looked horrid (kinda greyish beige paste) inside. Â Tasted meh but I ate them. Â
Egg Rolls - huge, fried up perfectly, solid "typical" veggie mix inside plus small pieces of - I think it was chicken. Â Best part of the meal.
Kung Pao Chicken - horrendous. Â I think it started out as Chung King. Â Heavy clear corn starch paste surrounded BLAND shreds of chicken, bits of carrot, rough-diced celery and white onion, slimy bits of red pepper and a couple of raw-looking peanuts. Â I thought that would be the nadir, but then I tried the other entree...
Beef and Brocolli - good color and crunch to the brocolli but the beef shreds and brown sauce were... Â bad. Â Just off. Â
Took a close look at the egg drop soup and decided not to try it. Â Oddly clearish grey color with shredded bits of what looked like chicken in it. Â Couldn't do it. Â
Plain white rice with the entrees (they couldn't do fried rice, even for an upcharge; I would have had to order a separate dish) was fine, little bag of the Chung King-style crunchy noodles, almond cookies and fortune cookies, assorted small containers of sauces including two the color and taste of thickened of hawaiian punch. Â
Sorry guys - I am a very forgiving diner but this was awful.
We have been ordering from here since we moved to Park Ridge in 1989.
This family owned business is clean, with plenty of in-house dining. If carry-out or delivery is your thing, they offer both. The owners are friendly and happy to accomodate your orders.
The egg rolls, fried rice, and egg foo yung are our favorites, but we have ordered many other dishes over the years; and have been happy with all.
If you order delivery, it arrives so hot, it's as if you were there at the restaurant!
Placed an order for delivery on Saturday night.
The Szechuan vegetable entree included a typical selection of American Chinese vegetables and a light garlic/chili pepper sauce. The egg rolls were large and nicely flavored.
Unfortunately, the white and vegetable fried rice sides were overcooked, mushy, sticky messes, and the pan-fried noodles had the appearance and flavor of ramen noodles rather than the Cantonese-style served at most American Chinese restaurants.
Based on all of the other positive reviews, I'm not sure that I didn't just catch them on an off night, but half of the meal was off-putting enough that I probably won't order from here again.
Family owned for ages by Sue and Tony. My wife and I both loved this place before we even met. The daily lunch specials are great. Sweet and sour chicken with red sauce is delicious. Egg rolls are large and delicious with sweet and sour and spicy mustard. House tea is complimentary. Egg drop soup is perfect. I always leave full.
Review Source:I got to try Chinese Dragon's mongolian beef and pad thai chicken. Very yummy, I must say. It's really hard to find good dishes like mongolian beef and beef and broccoli dishes, and even beef fried rice or sweet and sour chicken, that seem simple enough. Thanks again Chinese Dragon, I know where to get my assortment of Mongolian Beef!! : )
Review Source:Hands down the best Chinese American food in the northern suburbs. I've been going here for years and I can tell you that its run by the same family for over 40 years now. Their menu remains the same over the years and their food taste just as good. The prices are cheap for the portion you get. I can feed my whole family for 2 days for $50. Almost everything that they serve are homemade including their very addictive sweet & sour sauce. I swear I can drink that stuff straight out of the bottle. Their egg rolls are the best that I have ever tasted, and their hot and sour soup is to die for. I've tried nearly everything on that menu and I can truly say there isn't a bad dish on there. The ingredients are always fresh and plentiful in each dish. Some of my favorites are the Chicken and Shrimp in Garlic Sauce and the Triple Delight. The dishes are just so full of favor and spices that a whiff of it would make you salivate. I'm salivating as I'm writing right now. Absolutely the best in town, great great food!
Review Source:I wish I had gone here sooner! After eating at two other places just down the street from me in Park Ridge, I'd decided that my best choice for Chinese was probably buffet style food. I've been in here once, but I'm glad I took the time to sit down inside. I only tried the wonton soup and the garlic chicken, but I was fairly impressed with both. The garlic chicken came with lots of veggies and tons of flavor. One of the best Ive had. Oh! and the egg rolls were awesome. Just the right amount of crisp on the outside, and the right mix of ingredients inside. This will definitely be my choice for local Chinese from now on!
Review Source:It's a bit dated, but I've been eating here since childhood. Â It's a friendly neighborhood, family-owned and operated Chinese restaurant. Â
While some of the more "cuisine" Chinese dishes are to be had elsewhere down the street, Chinese Dragon has some of the best comfort food and home cooking Chinese I've ever eaten. Â
Craig's comment about the decor is correct, although I wouldn't quite call it a hole in the wall. Â I've eaten at plenty of those in the City. Â It's just not very modern. Â
Recommended: Sweet & Sour Chicken, Beef w/Brocolli, Steak Kow, any of their "Sizzling" platters (in restaurant only). Â Egg rolls are among the best in City. Â Awesome potstickers. Â They also have one of the best lunch specials in town to be had for under $6. Â
Great for a quick lunch alone, or grabbing dinner with the gang.
