SuAnne and I had Sunday Brunch. She had the Chicken Salad and I had the Prime Rib. They both were very good and price wasn't bad at all! Our waitress was very kind and helpful, but she took a little to much time for beverage refills! Other than that we enjoyed our visit to Cities. We haven't been in several years!
Review Source:My mother lives in Winston Salem, NC and this is her review:
Parking: She went on Sunday after church and sat in her car and waited for them to open.
Waitstaff: looked as if they were dressed for a classier menu than they had. Â They weren't delivering what they were dressed for. Â They were not very knowledgeable. Â Mother asked what kind of lettuce is in the salad and the waiter had to think for a minute and then he said: iceberg and never offered any other kind. Then, Â mother asked if they have romaine and he again had to think for a minute and said: Yeah, I can get that for you. Â
Atmosphere: it was a dark wood.  Mother was looking at the table and trying to figure out what type of wood it was.  Mother says it should have been a better quality of wood  Mother says the restaurant had a gloomy overcast.  It was bright sunlight 12:00 noon, and the sun was shining thru the windows.  One of mom's friends said it was cold in there, but mom wasn't cold.  Mother was fine w/ a sweater.
Food: Mother says the blackened salmon was very good. Â It was laying on top of the salad in three pieces. Â She says the presentation of the salmon was good b/c it was blackened on both sides and contrasted well w/ the salad. Â She said the salad consisted of (2) slices of green pepper, (2) slices of red onion, and she detected a small cube of something that reminded her of a tomato, she only got this red piece once, and lots of romaine lettuce, and a lot of shredded carrot. Â The salad dressing had no taste. Â It was a plain white base that overwhelmed what little roqeufort cheese was in there. This was the worst blue cheese dressing she ever had. Â The odd thing she says is that there were no croutons in the salad, not one! Â She understands that sometimes places are kinda scare on food but most places will usually put at least put (3) croutons, but there were none. Â She says there was really no point in there bringing out a salad. Â They should've just brought out the (3) pieces of salmon. She says the salmon was delicious b/c it tasted fresh and it had been put on a grill or something. Â She suspects it had some paprika on it cause she kept seeing something red. Â Her friend looked across the table and said to mom: "You really like that salmon". Â Mom said: Â Yeah I do. Â This is really good. Â She left 1/2 the salad behind.
One of her friends ordered (2) big pork chops. They looked like someone had lain them in a pan and they were not brown. Â They were grayish in color. Â They had pepper on the pork chops. Â He also had baked beans in a long dish and he said the beans were really good. Â Mother says she did not notice any red in them. Â They looked like pinto beans. Â Another friend ordered the steak. Â This friend did complain to the waiter that she did not get any bread. Â The waiter brought only (2) rolls for her and none for the other (3) guests. The waiter said bread is only brought on request. Â
Water: she ordered water w/ lemon, and she took one taste of it. Â The water did not really have a taste. Â She orders water for her house from Le Bleu and she kept thinking that when she got home she could get her own water.
Will mom go back to this restaurant again? Â Yes, for the salmon ONLY!
A nice spot, if a bit stuffy with the coat-and-tails waitstaff and funny chairs - to be fair though, our waiter was gracious and easygoing despite the outfit. Went with a group of five, and everyone's food was spot-on. The half roasted chicken was delicious, as was the prime rib.
Prices were remarkably low, given the quality and quantity of food offered. I'd give five stars but there was a certain something missing from the whole feel of the place. I think perhaps I wasn't taken in by the "pit" where we sat watching the same 25-frame slideshow of city skylines all night. Turn the lights up so I can see my food, add a bit more creativity to the menu, and for mid-range dining this could become a five.
The bar was closed on the Tuesday night when we were there, as it wasn't very busy - but it looked nice.
Cities is one of my most favorite restaurants. Â The atmosphere is delightful. Â The food is pretty darn good and the prices are reasonable. Â If it's your first time there, I'd recommend asking to sit on the lower floor where you can enjoy the slide show of different cities around the world and a nice twinkling star ceiling. Â The beer was good and cold, the Salad was very good and my prime rib was delicious. Â Very nice restaurants.
Review Source:Lovely place and one of the newer establishments in Winston Salem. They have a great variety on the menu from Med to California inspired dishes.
The main feature in the place is the "pit" - a lower floor with there is a wall screen featuring a slide show of the great cities of Earth. Very nice.
The bar is extremely smoky. More so than other bars in the area. Reservations are not needed, but advised.
UPDATE: I have been going to Cities all this past year (2007) and the food and menu has gotten a lot better. The seating has gotten faster and I would no longer advise reservations unless you are bringing a group or want to sit in the pit.
Oh, and you got to try one of their martinis. I think they are the best in the city.
And the smoky bar, not so much anymore. I think they worked out the ventilation issue.
Here, have another star.
