I've eaten at Citrus many times. I have never had an off experience. The atmosphere is pleasant and relaxing. Staff is friendly yet unobtrusive. Now as for the food...Yum! Nothing beats some warm Garlic Naan and a soothing bowl of Mulligatawny on a cold winter day. Wash it all down with a mango juice and I'm in heaven. But I never stop there. I love the Chicken Malai Kabas with the fragrant jasmine rice too. Every time I go there, I end up stuffed with left overs to savor the next day.
The only thing I have ever had trouble with was the hours they are open. I've gone a few times and they were closed. Call ahead.
In short..
Great atmosphere
Friendly staff
Good quality comfort food
Good portions for the price
Call ahead to make sure they are open
The Indian food here is tasty, tasty, tasty! Â We aren't all that familiar with the various dishes, but this place was highly recommended by a friend & they were right. Â EVERYTHING we ordered was great!
We haven't tried any of their Thai dishes yet, but I'm sure they're just as good.
When we were there a week ago the dining room was mainly Indian people . . . which makes me think the Indian food must be decent. Â You probably want to avoid an Indian place that has zero Indian people :)
Pleasant, simple decor and friendly staff make the place welcoming. The food is fabulous. Tried the unusual-sounding (Thai) deep-fried broccoli with apricot glaze appetizer and was delighted. It was thoroughly delicious, satisfying, and not at all odd -- one of those, "gee, why haven't I ever had anything like this before?" moments. Kind of a sophisticated sweet-and-sour treatment that was wonderful; the frying was deftly done, not the least bit greasy. Two curried dishes, including a marvelous salmon were as good as, or better than, any I've have in the many Indian restaurants I've eaten in throughout the Northeast. The prices are fair, the people are nice, service was attentive but not rushed, and the food really sings! You'd have to awfully picky not to enjoy Citrus. It's not 5 stars as in, "the best restaurant around" but as in, "the best of it's type," that being a casual Indian-Thai place. Well worth it if you enjoy South Asian food!
Review Source:this place is as good as it gets for Thai and Indian food we had an appetizer of fried calamari but this is not your average calamari it was breaded in a crust that was so crunchy and it had a sweet spicy sauce that i have dreams about then we shared the pad Thai and the tikka masala and i don't even know how to explain how good this stuff was best pad thai i have ever had and i have had plenty and the tikka masala was excellent so i thought ok everything we have eaten so far has blown me away so the dessert will be just ok and then they put it in front of me (warm date pudding) when we got home i felt like driving back to the restaurant to get another one wish i didn't share it , incredible to say the least everyone should have food like this before they die... eat well
Review Source:Good Indian food is hard to get & I'm usuallyl pretty happy if it's just edible, but this place was a surpassing expectations surprise. Luckily my friend, Krishna who  was only willing to go out for Indian food under certain conditions- one being that they had Chinese-Indian food, saw "Gobi Manchuri" on the on line menu and assented to going. He suggested a reservation. I thought it excessive- but turns out he was right. It's in a strip mall, but it's a REAL restaurant and serves Real Good Food. Not your average lack luster curry, but real, varied, well prepared indian food. The Chicken Andrha & vegetable Mangalore were really tasty. Their paneer is home made. The ambiance delightful. Prices totally on par. Matter of fact, I'm giving it another star.
Review Source:What a glorious mix of two of my favorite food styles!! Â Indian and Thai.mYum yum yum.....
I guess the Indian won my heart when it was time to order. No regrets because the Chicken Tikka Saag that I ordered was the best I'd had in quite awhile.... Â I know, it's a common dish, but it's still one of my favorites. Here, they did it right, without too much mustard greens to make it sour...
The sad thing about this place is the service.... Â It's pretty slow and frustrating actually...
As surprising as the combination may be to an untrained palette, Citrus has a phenomenal and eclectic blend of Indian and Thai foods. As an avid adventurer in the quest of finding the perfect Thai restaurant in the Hudson Valley, Citrus has proven to be at the top of my list. I have now been here with my family several times, and have experienced solid performance and a delicious meal every time. The wait staff is friendly, courteous, and extremely helpful. Whether you show up for a casual lunch buffet or a fancy dinner date, the experience is definitely worth the investment. Menu items are very reasonably priced, and the weekday buffet is a steal ($10 for all-you-can-eat, fresh, delicious food!). The weekend buffet, although more expensive, has a special variety and includes a variety of phenomenal and pristine desserts, including mini-cakes, custard cups, fruit platters, etc.
Overall, I have never been disappointed here. Food quality is fresh, price is reasonable, and it's a nice atmosphere that almost makes you feel at home. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy Indian and/or Thai food. Such a pleasant surprise for the chain-restaurant ridden generic Five Corners area!
It's barely worth pointing out if you're local to the Lower Hudson but it's really, really hard to find Indian food for good or ill round here, and Citrus does not look like much. It looks like a very small garden centre. You can see Price Chopper from the front door. Stepping inside, however, you get that excited little "oooh!" sensation and it really is a very pleasant place indeed.
So, to business. Citrus boasts a blend of Thai and Indian cuisine (though don't expect any kind of fusion, the dishes are kept resolutely separate on the menu), for our first visit we stuck to Indian - Mulligatawney soup was excellent. A personal favourite comfort food, the spices sloooowly revealed themselves as I ate it, and it transformed beautifully from light to rich. I took half of it home, wary of filling up - it was a fairly big bowl. Tamarind Eggplant slices (crispy eggplant slices with chickpeas and some sort of mystical dressing) were amazing though I didn't get to try much before my wife inhaled it. Very good appetizers indeed.
For our mains, I had lamb Rogan Josh (punchy but not overly-salted, done wrong this can taste like beef and gravy but this was impressive) and my wife had Chicken Jalfrezi, another classic executed well, with a pleasingly thick sauce.
For dessert we took a sidestep and went for the deep-fried Thai ice cream, four tiny balls of vanilla ice cream with a crispy coating and raspberry sauce. It was unfortunately very coconutty and almondy, something not mentioned on the menu, and as I personally detest both coconut and almond, I had to defer it to my wife. She loved it though.
Aaaand we finished with a round of unbelievably strong Madras coffee which I am still twitching from a day later.
We're definitely coming back here, it's a languid, peaceful place and the staff were very professional and attentive without being pushy. When our server (the manager?) saw our tip, he gave us an "awww" puppy-dog look as if we'd just given him a birthday card. Next time, we just might.
Checked out Citrus for dinner last night.
I have to say - I was quite impressed. Â Citrus does not look like much on the outside, but the ambience is very nice on the inside.
Let me break it down for you.
-Vegetable Samosas - No joke, these are probably the best samosas I have eaten, and I have had my fair share of samosas! Â Perfectly flaky crust, fresh vegetables on the inside spiced wonderfully, and excellent chutney and cilantro dipping sauces.
-Cocktails - SO cheap. Â They are all $6.50. Â Yes, $6.50 for a Manhattan with Johnny Walker Black. Â I'm not even a cocktail guy, but my friend informed me that these prices are ridiculous - in a great way.
-Paneer Makhani - Not the best that I've ever had, but far from the worst either. Â The gravy was fairly mild, but packed with flavor. Â The paneer was a little less soft than I prefer, but it was still great. Â I'll try something different next time.
-Naan - I wasn't that impressed with the Garlic Naan actually. Â The garlic and flavor were excellent, but the naan was much too hard. Â It didn't bend nicely to scoop up the rice and curry, and it was hard to chew. Â This was the low point of the meal I'd say.
Portions - Enormous. Â Seriously, these are the biggest portions I have ever seen at an Indian restaurant.
Service - Attentive, enthusiastic, and excellent. Â Our waiter did a great job to make our experience the best it could be. Â Hats off!
Prices are a little high - basically costs the same as many of the places I go in DC - even a little more! Â I honestly would prefer smaller portions with lower prices - I think that would be a nice trade off. Â
My friend had the lamb and he loved it.
I tried various dishes from Citrus after ordering take-out recently. Â I was disappointed in general; the Chicken Tikka Masala was made of cubed chicken, not chunks of Tandoori Tikka as it should be, the Bindi Masala was sharp with lots of oil and overly spiced. Â Breads were decent, we had the Alu Paratha, and the Roti, which is supposed to be made of whole wheat, was made from white flour, just like Nan. Â Chili Chicken, traditionally an Indo-Chinese dish was not authentic, and most of the entrees were steeply over-priced. Â It wasn't terrible, but I would not rush back.
Review Source:Stopped in for easter dinner. Ya I know it's not ham but why be boring when you can have killer indian?
So we had a nice big group and got to try lots of stuff. Everything was excellent. Every member of our group remarked at how good the food was. We had 2 vegetarians with us and 2 people that LOVE spicy. Both were incredibly happy with everything.
We had Vindaloo, Chattipan (Andhra pepper), naan's, chili chicken appetizer, Shrimp Korma and two veggie dishes, one cauliflower and the other I didnt try.
The staff was fun and friendly. It was an excellent mean and probably the best Indian I have tried in Orange County. I highly recommend this place!
Great food in general, but to echo what some of the other diners are saying, the service is hit or miss. Â We've been taking out a lot lately instead of dining in and there is almost always a problem with getting the order straight which is frustrating. They usually try and correct it quickly... so just check your order before leaving!!! Â
Love the curries, especially the gaeng ped and gaeng penang.
I've been here several times in the past year, as it's near to where I live and one of the few surviving Indian joints worth talking about. (Which is hard to do when you don't want to stop eating long enough to talk, it's so good...) Add to that a nice selection of Thai entrees and you've got an all-around winner for ethnic dining. I just popped in for a take out order and am glad I did, as the place was packed (at 7:30 on a Sunday... huh.) I've never had a bad experience or meal here and tonight's take-out service made my opinion even stronger. I ordered the Chicken Chutneywala and Khao Phad (deliciously fruity seasoned rice dish w/a mild curry tone) w/Thai Iced Tea to go, and the little extra noms they added (including little custard mini-flan desserts) just made my day. This place just gets better & better.
Review Source:It's an understatement to say that my girlfriend and I aren't big into Valentine's Day, but I didn't want to just let the day go by without doing at least a little something, so I made reservations at Citrus. That was actually big points for Citrus right off the bat; it's surprisingly tough to find good restaurants that take reservations in Orange County, and we didn't want to be stuck waiting with 30 other couples at a "first come, first served" restaurant. Very smart move on their part! We arrived about 30 minutes early and, although the restaurant itself was very busy, there were plenty of seats at the bar. The attentive hostess came over to check on our reservation and started getting a table ready for us while we had a drink. The cocktails - a Manhattan and a whisky sour - were nothing special but not bad, which is actually pretty good for an Indian restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised by the crowd, too: Most guys were in dress shirts and khakis, with hardly a single camouflage shirt or pair of work boots in sight. If you're not from the area, you might not know how rare that is, but trust me on that one. Before we finished our drinks, the table was ready, and we were seated with apologies for the delay (even though, again, we were early). I guess that explains why there were so many open bar stools: They seem really determined not to leave anyone sitting there for very long!
The menu is impressive. So much to choose from, it was hard to decide where to begin. We had the tamarind eggplant appetizer: Paper-thin slices of fried eggplant with chickpeas, in a tamarind and cilantro sauce. Â The eggplant was crispy and perfectly seasoned. Great start! For the main course we shared orders of chana masala and saag paneer. Everything looked delicious and did not disappoint. I had never had saag before so I didn't have a basis for comparison, but the GF said it was the best she'd ever had. I know that was certainly the case for me with the chana masala, which has been my go-to dish for many years. Perfectly cooked, medium-spicy, excellent presentation, and generous portion. Who would have thought that between Los Angeles, Boston, DC, New York City, and London... the best Indian food anywhere would be found on Route 94 in New Windsor? Hard to believe, but it's true.
They even had some really nice Valentine's Day extras: A complimentary (and very large, and very good) heart-shaped tiramisu-type cake for dessert, and a red rose along with the check at the end of the meal. The only ding on the night was the somewhat slow table service (it was about 40 minutes between when we finished our appetizer and when our entrees arrived, and at one point it took two requests to get a glass of wine) but it wasn't enough to affect the 5-star rating. Absolutely impeccable from start to finish and worth the drive from wherever you are. I'm looking forward to trying some of their Thai dishes on our next visit, which will definitely be soon.
I'm confused.... And after having read all of the raving reviews from my fellow "Yelpers", I am stunned that  after having dined at Citrus for the first time on my birthday this past Sunday,  I now feel the need to leave only two stars (2.5 if I could). Â
The food was fine. In fact, some of it was very nice, savory and well-presented and prepared, such as the crab cake in coconut sauce, the traditional Indian samosas and the moist Thai chicken satay, but the scallop appetizer was a disappointment. Â When a diner reads "scallops" from an appetizer menu, they expect to receive the larger, traditional sea scallops on their plate, not the tiny cousins, commonly referred to as "bay" scallops, which is what I received, in a pile, on the plate.
Still, the food was good, overall. My chief complaint comes from the biggest bane of many a diner- POOR service. Â Ugh. Â I loathe poor, inattentive service. Â I would much rather experience excellent, attentive service combined with just mediocre food, rather than exceptional food delivered with poor service. Â In fact, I am more likely to re-visit an establishment with great service and so-so food rather than the other way around. Â It's all a part of the best kind of dining experience.
To be exact, service was not rude at all, just very lacking. Â We waited far too long to be seated, waited a very long time for someone to initially come to our table, and dirty, finished plates were left on our table for quite some time while other staff members walked past over and over again, taking no notice. Â Requests to refill drink orders were forgotten, and a prolonged period of time passed between ordering our appetizers and our main entrees, due to our ever-absent waitress. Â And yet the restaurant was - literally- only at about 20% capacity. Â I don't get it. Â Out of approximately 25 available dining tables, there were only 4 to 5 other tables filled during our entire time there.
Perhaps Citrus was very under-staffed through no fault of their own (employees calling in sick without notice) but it is unfortunate for a new customer like myself (and those I dined with) to have to experience that, as I am not likely willing to take the risk and give them a second chance. Â It made for an unpleasant birthday dinner out. Â I wish I had chosen a different place for the celebration.
We have been eating Indian and Thai cuisine for years and have had a variety of food that vary in taste and quality. Â Citrus is high up on the list for atmosphere, excellent quality of food, wonderful service, and especially authenticity. Â We have tried every vegetarian item on the menu and some items not on the menu, recommended by the staff, and have been pleased every time.
Review Source:In the past month, I've already eaten here 4 times and I have never once been disappointed. Â Usually I take other people here, but I was driving past the other day and decided to treat myself. Â This place is truly perfect; I've taken friends and family here (for regular dinner and the buffet), but I was perfectly comfortable in the booth by myself as well. Theres always (presumably) Indian music playing in the background, and the overall volume of the restaurant itself is never too loud. Once you're inside, it really doesn't feel at all like you're in the middle of Five Corners. Â The service is excellent; I've always had the same lovely waitress, and the rest of the waitstaff are pleasant and attentive.
The lighting is dim, and I was worried that I wouldnt be able to read my book, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was just bright enough that I could read, but low enough to provide an intimate ambiance. Â
I ordered the chicken korma. Â It was delicious. Â The sauce was a lovely orange with a swirl of coconut (milk? oil?) on top. Â My leftovers were more than enough for dinner the next day. Â I strayed from my usual plain naan and opted for the garlic alternative- I was so pleased with my choice. Â Everything was perfectly cooked, with hearty portion sizes (there was more than enough to take home and have for dinner the next day).
Upon recommendation from my waitress, I ordered the sticky date pudding. I was going to get it to go, but she convinced me to stay and eat it, so that the pudding would stay hot and the ice cream wouldn't melt. Best advice I've had in a while. I savored every bite of that desert, and it took intense self control not to lick my plate clean afterwards- it was that good.
Not only my favorite Indian restaurant, but probably my favorite restaurant overall.
I grew up in New Windsor, and I am simply flabbergasted that there's an Indian restaurant this good now at Five Corners. Â I cannot praise this place enough. Â The food was delicious, and the service is attentive and genuinely caring. Â The ambience is romantic --- subdued lighting, quiet, just some sitar music playing softly in the background. Â This is a perfect upscale date place. Â The menu features three pages of Indian dishes, and a fourth full page of Thai dishes --- the emphasis is definitely Indian, but there's still quite a selection on the Thai side as well. Â I ordered Chicken Tikka Marsala, and at the end of meal, was using the delicious naan to wipe up every last drop of sauce from the serving bowl --- it was that good. Â You have to give this place a try!
Review Source:Perfect. Great classy interior with full bar. Service was prompt and polite, and our food came out reasonably fast. Haven't tried their Thai but the Indian is phenomenal, some of the best I've had, I got the Tandoori chicken, comes out steaming on a hot skillet. The portions are average, not enough to get stuffed but enough to be satisfied. Great restaurant in the HV.
Review Source:The food was delectable and the service was outstanding. We enjoyed ordering a number of different dishes and sharing with each other. I enjoyed every dish. The calamari was great and, if you like thinks spicy, the Andhra Pepper Chicken was quite nice. They portions are a good size too. The only disadvantage is the outside appearance.
Review Source:We went there after visiting Storm King Art Center. The exterior was not attractive with its lime color paint. However, I was glad to choose this place for lunch. The interior was warm and pretty with its slanted roof. The lunch buffet offers a sample of Indian and a few of Thai selections. My favorite was chili okra.
Review Source:Without a doubt the best Indian lunch buffet  I have ever had...and I have eaten in a LOT of Indian restaurants all over the country!  There were perhaps two items offered that might be considered vaguely Thai, so consider this an Indian restaurant, really.  I ate here with my husband while vacationing in the area.  We loved the mushroom saag...a lot.  I was fond of a dish made from cream of wheat with curry leaves, mustard seeds and other subtle flavors.  The Tandoori chicken was done to perfection (not too dry, as so often happens) and the fish was flakey and delicious.  This may be the only time I've really wanted to sample every single item available on a buffet, and not one thing disappointed.  You'll get naan delivered to your table with the lunch buffet, and when we checked in on Yelp, we were immediately rewarded with a discount coupon on our meal...something I had never experienced before.
The ambiance is wonderful, the staff is courteous and attentive, and the entire dining experience was simply superb!
We are "foodies", subscribe to a number of gourmet cooking publications, are constantly cooking various cuisines at home, and trying new restaurants. Â I was a chef in an earlier life. Â I have to say, this restaurant stands head and shoulders even with any Indian restaurant in NYC or anywhere else we have found great Indian food.
We were in the area on vacation and picked this place for lunch due to the other reviews. Â They have a sumptuous lunch buffet, and do not spare the good stuff. Â The addition of a little Asian cuisine doesn't hurt either, but the Indian cooking is spectacular. Â I would have given it 5 stars but a couple of pieces of goat Korma were a little tough and they left the tails on the shrimp in the Thai shrimp fried rice. Â DO NOT let those little quibbles stop you from checking them out. Â The food is of the highest quality, freshly made, with superior ingredients. Â For today's lunch they had a great selection of meat and vegetable dishes, all with an appropriate level of spice - enough to get the curry "rush" but not hot enough to be uncomfortable - unless you're a spice wimp. Â If you're a spice wimp, what are you doing eating Indian food - that's what its all about!!!
The tandoori chicken was perfect - with a little flavored outside but tender inside, instead of the overcooked stuff you find in many buffets. Â The Aloo Gobi was excellent, and they made a mushroom saag that just screamed with mushroom flavor without being over the top. Â We went back for seconds on that. Â For dessert they had a warm carrot dish, thick and sweet with nuts and raisins on top. Â Excellent. Â Too many other dishes to list. Â Just go.........
The decor inside is very nice, they did a great job of renovating this place that I believe used to be a Greek restaurant named Demos Cafe. Â Its very comfortable, quiet, and tastefully decorated.
I love this place! The service is good, menu selection has variety, and the food is very flavorful. There was a particular Thai dish I wanted that was not on the menu and the chef made it to order and it turned out perfect! I have not tried the buffet yet because I have fallen in love with the butter chicken. Don't let the tacky white and green exterior deter you, the inside is decorated nicely.
I recommend this place to all my friends.
went there after good reviews here and weren't dissapointed. place is good! Â We have ordered from the both "sides" of the menu - Indian and Thai. Eggplant with chickpeas was excellent (indian), tom kha gai (thai) soup was good but little different from what we have used to (little too creamy for my taste but it had a good flavor),"traditional" chicken tikka masala was awesome (5 starts). Nan breads as well, top notch.
Thai vegetarian dish was again good, but different from what we used to. it had a "crispy" nice taste to it but in my opinion it was little overpriced for what it was, or it has to be much better in a "wow" category to match the price :) Â Service was very good and place has a good decor and ambiance, even if you would not expect it from the business situated in the middle of the parking lot of the shopping plaza. I would recommend anybody to try them and see themselves. we will definitely be back even it is not a shortest ride from our house.
place is not too expensive but not too cheap either. although portions are big and our dinner leftovers were more then enough for a second day full dinner.
This restaurant is close to my in-laws, and if you want Indian food, it's the only game in town. Â Fortunately, it's great. Â The vegetable samosas are big and hearty, and the naan is baked perfectly. Â The sauce in the chicken tikka masala has a fantastic tomato flavor, and is spiced perfectly. Â The matter paneer was delicious as well. Â The next time I go, I'll have to try the lamb rogan josh. Â
For dessert, definitely try the sticky date pudding.
All in all, delicious and highly recommended.
I was on a business trip nearby and my coworker and I were looking for an Indian/Pakistani restaurant. Our hopes weren't high because there doesn't seem to be that many restaurants in this area and this being a restaurant that does both Indian and Thai was not helping. We found out through reading yelp reviews that this restaurant was called Bakhara Bistro before but somewhere along the road they must have picked up a Thai chef/partner and turned it into Citrus.
The food is delicious. We only ordered Indian dishes though so I can't talk about the Thai dishes. We had Chicken Tikka Masala, some lamb dish that came on a sizzling grill, naan and paratha. The portions are huge. I wish I had a fridge in my hotel to have been able to keep the left overs. The waiter had the chef prepare us some special off the menu dessert that came in the form of a strawberry custard in a shot glass and pistachio tapioca pudding in another shot glass. Just the perfect size and again it was delicious. The service is also amazing. My coworker and I wanted hot water after they had already brought us room temperature water. They kindly replaced our glasses with warm water. We asked again for hot water and they finally gave it to us, probably thinking we're total weirdos. We asked if the meat was halal and was pleasantly surprised that it was.
Overall I think this is a great place. I would return again if I was in the area.
