Very good beer selection. Â Pretty good food too. Â This is a great place to go late at night when you want to get a drink and some pub grub without spending too much money. Â It isn't as high end as Trinity Hall, but it is still a good value. Â I got a Lakewood Temptress and a chicken quesadilla.
A friend of mine got the mussels. Â They were good, but be careful. Â Those are stewed chipotle peppers in it, not tomatoes. Â Don't make my mistake.
It had been a long while since I was last here - like, years ago, before my Lakewood friends started doing stupid crap like having kids and ceasing to be fun. I remember C&B as a comfy watering hole to knock back an afternoon beer or three. Anyhow, the planets aligned last night and I wandered down there with a couple of friends.
It was smaller than I remembered, and it was busy, but there was still room for us to find a table right off the bat. The one waitress on the floor was understandably slammed, so it took a little bit for her to take our drink orders. The beer selection was a little bit lacking - not really anything in the way of local brews - but it was adequate. And I found a nice Pale Ale that hit the spot. The menu was a LOT bigger than I remembered, and there's a lot of adventurous/gourmet stuff to choose from. We played it safe and got burgers (and a chicken sandwich). Given the choice between tortilla chips and herb-roasted taters, gimme taters. Everything on the plate was damn good, but they were a little skimpy on the potatoes. All in all, a good meal.
We all left fat and happy, but I just had a little bit of a "meh" feeling. The service wasn't bad, but it was slow - understandable. I found a beer I liked, but I wished for more local flavor - and maybe more beers on tap. The food was tasty, but I kinda wish they had good ol' french fries instead of a tiny little pile of new potato wedges. Don't get me wrong, these are all first world problems, and it won't stop me from coming back for a giant bowl of mussels, but... I can't see this being one the Top 5 in my regular rotation.
One of our new favorite neighborhood spots! Delicious food, amazing prices and love the dive feel!!! Recommend to anyone!!!
Trying a new place in our new neighborhood!!!
Well what can I say...this little dive bar/resturaunt is a fav! Its right in our neighborhood, the food is delicious, amazing quality and everything fresh! Love that they use Jimmy's meats. The drinks were good and great prices! I have not eaten ONE bad thing there! Everything has been amazing! One of our favorite go to spots!!!
When you are in the mood for dim lighting, an easy going atmosphere, solid beers on tap, and to meet a friend in the age group from 21 - 61 - this is your place. This pub that really actually resonates as an awesome dive bar.
Surprisingly the small bar was able to accommodate a group of about 6 or 7 of us comfortably. The server promptly greeted us and collected our orders in a quick, yet patient manner. I definitely pulled one of those 'well, I am not sure what I want...do I want a beer or wine..." Despite my indecisiveness, she happily waited until I came to my decision. This place is not a spot where you'd initially expect the friendliest service, but I was proven wrong. For some reason, I always expect a surly bartender that barks order requests from you and if you don't answer within 5 seconds you'll never be served. Well, contrary to my stupid belief - this place is the best of both worlds.
Though, I didn't try anything on the food menu, I have heard numerous times that they boast quite a tasty fare. When Stella or Spaten is on tap, I am usually pretty happy. If anything this is a solid Lakewood bar for a night to just have a beer or those nights when its 1:45 AM and you maybe don't remember your name.
A "foodie friend" had read the yelp reviews and decided we should try a steak. I am so glad that we did.
Exceptional steak!!!! Â Seriously, one of the best fillet cuts of steak that I have ever had in DFW - including the "High End" steak houses.
Atmosphere is relaxed and feels like a "dive". I loved it. Courteous, professional wait staff that KNOW their food.
Hummus was great too (and I am a Greek Food snob).....Asparagus cooked and seasoned perfectly.
Throw in a pair of jeans and go check it out. Then share your opinion.
I told my friends that I can't believe there isn't a line outside of the door at this place.
Lakewood's BEST kept secret.
This pub changed my life for the better, and it can change yours, too. Â I have attained "regular" status at this bar in the past year so I consider this review a well-deserved affirmation of its unexpected awesomeness.
First, the name. Â You think it's a gay bar right? Â Well it's not, the "cock" really refers to a rooster you pervs, but all types are certainly patrons. Â Refreshingly, the crowd is as mixed and diverse, charming and downright fun and welcoming, unpretentious and open as one loner can hope for. Â
The entrance is unassuming and located on a strip on Gaston Avenue in Lakewood Dallas. Â You know you've found your haven when you see the red door and inconspicuous sign. Â You walk in to a dark and aged yet well-cared for neighborhood pub that first brings to mind "dive bar", and then you discover it is anything but: unglamorous at first glance yet ripe with nostalgia, smiles and regulars and staff who happily offer casual conversation and charm. Â The first thing that happens is you are graced with a genuine and glorious smile from the bartender. Â (Unless it's that one guy...he takes some breaking in, but don't worry, you'll get there, and it's worth it.) Â The second thing you notice is the beer selection: Â a wide-array of craft bottled beer, and more than 10 imports and US craft beers on tap. Â They have even recently started carrying a local brew on tap from Lakewood Brewing! Â The third thing - you pick up a menu. Â Guess what, the food here is amazing and made with high quality ingredients. Â The burger is to die for, the mussels are insane, the daily special is always, well, very special indeed, and all of it is delicious and NOT typical "bar food". Â The chefs are real chefs. Â Brunch is served Saturday AND Sunday, from noon to 5pm. Â NOON TO 5PM! Â The jukebox selection is endless. Â You have found your pub. Â
I was first told to check out the Cock and Bull by my regular server at Toulouse, (another positive review altogether, another day). Â I was new to the city, alone and disheartened by the pretentious semblance of the area, and eating at a restaurant within walking distance of my "corporate housing" quite regularly. Â He sat down with me one night and shared some banter and recommendations for my stint in Dallas. Â On the top of his list was Cock and Bull, an "industry pub", frequented by wait staff, bartenders, and workers of the service trade. Â (The most welcoming kind of folk, if you ask me.) Â I have since met jacks of all different trades here, from lawyers to work-from-home bloggers, but I considered this is one hell of a compliment.
I have since made friends at this pub, in a big new city where it can be difficult to meet people. Â I now have people. Â One bartender in particular made (what felt like) a special point to introduce me around say hello each time I walked in. Â I have never been to this pub without having at least one conversation with a total stranger. Â How awesome is that? Â Sure, there was that one weird guy who butt in to my conversation and wouldn't shut up about his successful business, but isn't it fun to leave laughing it off, having experienced the experience? Â This place is definitely safe, and the staff will always have your back. Â
To conclude, the well-deserved praise, reverence and homage to this little pub is entirely attributed to the amazingly friendly and welcoming staff it employs. Â It is downright easy to make friends here. Â Topping it off is the high quality of the food and drinks in a welcoming, laid-back neighborhood establishment. Â This is how a pub should be, and like I mentioned, it changed my life for the better.
Been going here for years. The staff knows what I like, and I'm sure they'll get to know what you like if you come there often enough. Great food, great place to hang out and run into friends.
On the downside, I'm not too fond of their food menu. It's too expensive for what you get, and a burger should never be paired with tortilla chips or rosemary potatoes. More beer selection would be cool, too.
But that's not enough to dock it one star.
Walked into a bar, sat down... and had the best salads of my life. It wasn't a nambby pamby salad either - plein de toppings and fantastic quality. Don't think I'm just a salad girl, this place throws down an insane burger as well.
The prices reflect their quality. Go here for some great drinks in the best neighborhood in Dallas, and order the best non-bar food in a bar that you will ever ever ever have. Go here - and bring a date.
I really like this place. It's a nice neighborhood joint that you would not think had great food but they do! The chefs came from more foodie renowned places and I think just got sick of the politics that go on in that environment.
I really like the hummus. I keep asking for veggies to dip in the hummus as opposed to pita so I wish they would add some carrot and celery sticks as an option.
The airplane chicken rocked!
The definitely need a better wine list! With such good food, you need a good wine, not what they are serving there so that's definitely an area that needs improvement.
It can get pretty loud which makes it difficult to have a conversation. And, it's a "bar" as well and a neighborhood bar so some of the locals probably walk there and get totally wasted so sometimes you are around some pretty obnoxious drunk people.
I would call this a dive bar Plus. It has all the things I expect from a dive bar:
1) Midnight inside no matter what the time outside
2) Regulars the bartender knows by name and drink
3) Spectacular Service
4) Questionable cleanliness (mostly questionable because it is too dark for me to be able to tell if it is clean)
and then the Plus
5) Amazing food at cheap prices
Vanessa is incredible! Super cool and made me a phenomenal Manhattan during busy hours (yes, I was a jerk to ask but I really needed one). Food is top-tier and Sunday evening $6 blue plates are best value in Dallas. You takes what you gets on that one, by the way.
Finally, Baked Cambert. Get this.
I haven't been to the C&B in forever. Â I rectified that and went last week to grab a beer and a burger. Â I'm going to have to give the burger another chance. Â I ordered the one that had the gorgonzola cheese, and I really think I ruined it by putting mustard on it. Â It wasn't that great. Â Still hit the spot, though. Â I enjoy divey bars so I need to put this place back on my radar.
PS - I just noticed they have a Saturday brunch. Â Score!
This Lakewood pub has a great low-key (and low light) atmosphere, with generally decent food, and a particularly good burger. Â
A dark little hole on Gaston, Cock & Bull is a good bar to meet friends, relax, drink and avoid the usual Dallas pretense. Â Â It has a decent selection of beer and spirits, and service is usually friendly and prompt. Â
The main reason to visit, however, is the menu which boasts a wide array of well prepared dishes. Â The burger is the best thing here. Â Instead of the typical bun, it is served on a ciabatta roll. Â There are several variations on the burger, the best of which is the Red Bull Burger. Â Fortunately, this has nothing to do with the slightly weird/gross tasting energy drink. It consists of roasted red bell pepper, Gouda, and Chipotle mayo. Â Also good is the Kobe Bull Dog which is offered New York or Chicago style. Â
There is a large offering of simple snacks to have with drinks including Hummus, chile pretzels, and a spinach artichoke dip. Â All of these are good, but not great.
Atmosphere wise, it is dark, relaxed and nary a douchebag in sight.
I haven't been here just for a drink because to waste a trip there when you're not hungry is that - a waste.
Parking is a bit of a challenge, since it's on Gaston right next to a Papa John's, but whatever. Â It feels like a place full of regulars, but not really intimidating, if that makes sense.
I get the veal meatloaf with the white truffle mac and cheese because it's so darn good, I force everyone who eats with me to have a bite. Â It's breathtaking. Â My friends usually opt for burgers, and every one I've tried has been pretty special as well. Â The rest of the menu looks pretty well thought out and well executed. Â I'm not sure I'll stray from the meatloaf/mac and cheese anytime soon, but if I do, i'll update.
Definitely the best food I've had in a bar in Dallas!
Cock & Bull has a cult following (read: regulars) and I am one of the many few. Â If I need a cool place for stiff drinks, great food and in my "hood", this is the place that I go. Â And trust me, I go here a lot! Â When you first walk in, especially during the day, it's dark. Â (Take off your sunglasses, jerk!) But once you find your way around, it's very cozy. Â Drinks are really stiff. Â Just don't get something too frou-frou; I did that once and the bartender gave me a go-eat-pooh glance. Â I thought the champagne cocktail was part of every bartender's repertoire! Â Ooops! Â If you are hungry, look on the black board for creative blue plate specials (Zapps potato chip crusted deep fried quail) and a variety of imported cheeses. Â
Bon appetit!
This is a small place, but it's bad ass. A couple of quick tips. First, this isn't your traditional barfly food. It's gourmet bar food.
For example, do you know the difference between "Feta" and "Gouda" cheese? I sure as hell don't, but these guys do and they have plenty of cool and interesting food pairing ideas.
Second, the bartender is one of the best multi-taskers I've ever seen. Don't know his name, but he has a beard and reddish hair. Cool dude.
The only downside is their isn't a lot of seating. Â It's not their fault, but it is what it is... So get their early!
I won't beat a dead horse with a rant. Â Everyone else has this place nailed except one department.
If you are a gentleman with an immediate back door emergency. Â Prepare to share the moment with the far side of the bar and any other restroom patrons. Â There is no stall door and the loo is the first thing you see entering the mens room. Â From this prone position, you can actually see some patrons in the bar...and vice versa.
I hate to do this, I just hate it, but I have to share a deep dark secret I've shared with very few. Â But I can no longer allow my selfishness to control my actions. Â I'm about to share with you the best date spot in Dallas?
Ready guys, get out your pen and paper and start taking notes. Â Tell your girl you are going to take her out for the best steak dinner of her life (this works even better on a first date, btw hopefully she doesn't think you're a total DB before you even take her out.) Â Anyway, she's thinking Nick and Sam's, Del Frisco's, or some other lame been there done that steak house. Â Oh but let her know the dress code is more casual (she's probably thinking Golden Corral by now).
You drive down Gaston and she'll be like WTF when you pull up to the VERY non-descript door of Cock and Bull, a total dive bar located in the heart of Lakewood. Â Order the $20 tenderloin with grilled asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes. I'm telling you now, INDESCRIBABLE! The steak melts in your mouth the asparagus is to die for and the potatoes accompany the meal perfectly, all for $20 (no need to ask mom for an advance on the allowance on this one, aren't you lucky). Â To top it all off they have tons of beer, booze and wine to wash it all down.
So basically you're officially not that typical Dallas Dbag -- you know the best steak dinner isn't in some stuffy steak house and doesn't cost a fortune -- it's at the Cock and Bull. Â Look at you cool man.
Small place, little bit dive-y, cold beer, good food.. How can it go wrong?
I've had a couple of different burgers there and the grilled cheese, which was preeety dang good. My dad says the grilled cheese is 'hotter than hell' but I think his taste buds are screwed up. I enjoyed it!
Oh and they have the bowling game. Only drawback, the service can be a little slow.
The Cock & Bull has it all---dive bar atmosphere, great people watching, and a sassy yet excellent staff. They also offer one of the best grilled chese sandwiches I have ever had the pleasure of consuming AND offer Strongbow in a can (big gold star here).
In addition to great food (the cheese selection is diverse and delicious), Wednesday's are half off wine by the glass night, and if you can tear yourself away from LOST (sometimes I can--sometimes I can't), definitely worth venturing out for.
So I went to CnB last night for the Last Cigarette celebration....and as I suspected, they totally earned another star. Our waitress (who I recognized as the one that showed up late and caused the delay on my last visit) was completely on top of it...didnt miss a beat, she was awesome.
Blaine ordered the infamous steak....and alll three of us agreed hands down, that THAT steak, was the best steak any of us have EVER had. And people, we've had a lot of steaks, from a lot of places.....BEST EVER. Cut like butta, melted in your mouth, perfectly cooked...on top of homemade mashed tators....dear lord it as amazing.
So bravo CnB....I knew you would win me over, and you did. :)
If I were hungry, I would have definitely ordered some food from this quaint little joint known to some locals as the CnB, because whatever they were eating next to me looked ridiculous. Â I went here quite a while back and it's taken me forever to get this review in but I think I need to make my way back yonder so I can order up some of those awesome looking eats.
I pulled up to the corner of the bar and stared at the beers on tap in front of me. Â Perhaps I was blind that night, but I failed to notice the row of beers on tap to the left of me. Â All is well, however, because I got one of the most delicious beer's from Saint Arnold's. Â I think it was the brown ale. Â It was a lot darker than I had expected I was getting, but once I took a sip, I didn't mind at all. Â It was really, really good. Â And I was right, Saint Arnold's makes a great root beer as well which I've had courtesy of Central Market.
In any case, I really like how small and intimate this place is. Â It was packed when I was there, but I managed to still find a seat up at the bar and enjoy myself a brew. Â I'm itching to go back again soon and like I said, enjoy myself a full meal, with another tasty beer and perhaps some good company on the side.
5 stars. Â I either love something, or I hate it (see Genghis). Â It doesnt need to be said, but I would be remiss if I joined this site and didnt give a shout out to one of my favorite neighborhood hangouts. Â It's like going to a friend's house.
We discovered C&B randomly a few years ago, fell in love with it and have been loyal customers ever since. Â It's everything you want your neighborhood bar to be: cozy, homey, fun and close enough to home you can get there with one eye open if you need to. Â
I want to go tonite and get the edamame & a cheese plate with a nice crisp wine. Â
It's got a GREAT menu, amazing food for a great price and they rotate the menu pretty frequently so people like us don't get burned out. Â Despite being a little smokier than you'd normally go for, this place is always an A+ for a late dinner. Â
It's always got a nice crowd, sometimes it may be tough to get a table right away but that's because people don't want to leave - this is a place where you hang out for a while.
Leave the heels, makeup, and jewelry at home because this neighborhood bar is super casual....and that's definitely the appeal. Your typical dive bar where the bartenders know your name. Â I've been to lots of these back in the Windy City, but from my understanding there's not as many in Chicago.
While the divey atmosphere is fun and the games look appealing (bowling video game anyone?) what i really loved about this bar was the owner's (hi Shaun!) passion about his bar and the Lakewood area. Â By the end of our quick chat he had me wanting to run home to pack the bags and move to Lakewood...and if I did I suspect I'd be a regular at Cock and Bull.
I saw no bull, and I saw no .... what?! This is a bar that I feel like I could walk into with my sleeping bag under my arm, pull up a stool at the bar, finish a whiskey on the rocks, stuff my face with gourmet pub grub, then shuffle off to the corner and go to sleep for days in a happy, happy comma. Maybe I'd wake up for a Guinness or two... or for their $9.50 burger and a draft special on Mondays.
If you look up cool, no-nonsense neighborhood bar in the Webster's Dictionary, you will find a picture of this place. If you look up the word duck, you will find a picture of a duck. What do ducks have to do with this sweet diveyish bar? Nothing. I just like ducks.
And I like this place. A lot. You are greeted by a knight in not so shiny armor when you creak open the door. Walk your way past him, and you're greeted by the laid back and super friendly bar staff--or if you're lucky--one of the uber cool owners. The space is filled well with a long bar with stools to the left and a wall of tables to the right. A silent TV floats in the left corner over a Silver Strike Bowling arcade game. (aka best bar game ever... well besides the nude chick photo hunt. What? It's fun!) It's a bit smokey, but you get used to it. I'm not sure if you could get a nicer customer base if you payed them. Most of the people who frequent this bar are neighborhood folk, and being that I am from the same hood, I likey. What's up my peoples? I be hangin' out here more for shores.
I was filled to the brim from dinner so I wasn't able to try their chalkboard of food items, but they sure sounded good. I'll be back sho' nuff to get my grub on... and to whip some ass at Silver Strike Bowling. Who's up?!
I'm special, and so are you:
Sundays: $4 Stellas, $6 Blue Plate Specials
Mondays: $9.50 Burger and draft, $2.50 wells
Tuesdays: $2.50 domestic bottles, 50% off apps, except for cheese plate
Wednesdays: 50% off wines by the glass, $8 Cheese Plates, $3 Heinies
Thursdays: $4 Guinness & Harp, $5 Irish Car Bombs
Hands down, my favorite bar ever. Â I only go to Dallas once or twice a year now that I've moved away, but every time I do, the bartender remembers my name, so awesome.
If you like small, dark pubs, quiet enough to hear your friends then this is the place. Â I feel completely comfortable going alone because the bartenders and patrons are always super cool. Â They have a jukebox too which is fun.
I don't know if it's just the Cock and Bull burger or what, but there is a burger with gouda and red bell peppers on it, you must try it, have a shiner too for me please.
I love you Cock and Bull! Â I miss you.
Forever, Always, Your Biggest Fan, Courtney
I have just been informed that my favorite C and B bartender, Adam, no longer will be pouring the booze there. Ack. It's just depressing when one of your favorite bartenders leaves one of your most frequented bars. The rest of the staff there is awesome, don't get me wrong, it just won't be the same for me...
I will be pouring the last bit of my 40 oz on the ground tonight.
I am perplexed that people keep referring to the CnB as a "dive". Â Yes, it is small, smoky and dark, but it also has some chef-quality, creative menu items that are always well-executed. Â They also have Times Ten wine, which if you order on Wednesdays (half-price wine night) is the best deal in town. Â They also have an ambience that (other than the smokiness, which I don't mind too much) is definitely a step or two above dive. Â The staff is great, too.
We are regulars at the CnB. Â The great service, great food, great juke box, and great atmosphere keep us coming back. Â I love this place.
We had a late dinner on Saturday night. Â Baked Brie to be shared by four people and each couple got a burger and a grilled cheese and split them both. Â We were all really hungry, but the food was great. Â The staff was nice and attentive and it was very affordable. Â
Decent beer selection.
Went an event which was catered by Cock and Bull. I didn't find out what the actual items were, but I am using the menu as a guide...The spinach artichoke beggar's purse was really good, i love the crispy and savory phyllo dough. The mini beef wellingtons (i don't see it on the menu) were really flavorful. The mini crab cakes were only so so, a little dry and I didn't care for the seasoning. The menu has a Texas spiced Crab Cake, not sure if it was the same think, but minaturized.
They also brought a delicious white cake with a light cream cheese filling and topped with mixed berries..it was delicious! Not to sweet, perfectly moist and mmmmmm I want another piece.
I am sad to hear that the actual place is so smoky though! The menu (and Nico) also talks about a weekend brunch which may be good reason to check it out.
Now I feel pressured to get this right since I'm the first one! OH THE HUMANITY!! Alright . . . here we go . . .
Ahh... Lakewood. I love this part of town. Well, I should, I live here. Anyway... most people would think of the Cock and Bull as a place to have a dive bar experience and a good Irish Car Bomb... and they would be right. But check out the brunch. It's good stuff man. I had a salmon omelet that was ridiculous. The food has always been awesome. They have an amazing and creative chef, and I've never been disappointed. The atmosphere is that of a neighborhood pub... Â It's smoky. Very smoky. It's usually lessened in the afternoon, but the smell is still there. The drinks are okay, nothing special. No real drink specials, but the food... kick ass! Good job to both Mr. Bull and Mr. Cock.
This is a GREAT neighborhood bar. I like the brunch, but I like the "Come on man, it's 1:30, we've got enough time for one more. Let's just run over to the Cock and Bull and see what's up. Dude, come on! Don't be such pussy! Hey! Wake up! Dude . . . AWWW DAMMIT!! You puked on my shoe!!" much better.
Cock and Bull is great. Go. Now. Why are you still here?
