Anyone who has ate at Coney Island and has the nerve to say these are good is not telling thee truth.Im 60yrs old and lived above the old Canton laundry across from the GOP as a kid.Back then you could get a good dog with chili sauce that stuck to the dog, not watered down chili that only makes a great steamed bun yucky. I watched for many years and marveled at the old timers who had an armful of dogs and whipped them out so fast. But the sauce was not as it is today.I make better11111 Its just as everything goes, no one cares to keep the old recipes going.Want to make more money.cheapen ingredients up. Fine but dont say their authentic cause some of us oldies know better.

hot dogs that taste like you bought them from Walmart.... chili dogs? that is not chili, that is red hamburger water.... you can not fling chili out of a bowl onto a hot dog.

for Fort Wayne, they're not bad.... not great either.

a Great chili dog has thick chili and a natural casing hot dog... not some pink ballpark wanna be....

    service is non existent.

Hands down the best coney dogs I have ever had. I have tried many, many others and nothing comes close. Every time I have bitten into a coney dog somewhere else, all I can think is that it's not as good as Coney Island in Fort Wayne. Maybe one day I will find one but I have yet to do it.

My worst fear is coming true.

After the owners recent death, the place is going down hill.

We went in for a dozen tonight and we were two of about six people in the restaurant. We stood at the counter and the guy making the dogs was talking to his friend, completely ignoring us. Then there was a guy counting money in the drawer who didn't bother to turn around, even though my wife and I were talking loud enough to get his attention.

We waited about three minutes went by and the guy making the hot dogs was still talking to his friend. The guy at the register finished counting his money and finally turned around and asked if we had been helped.

We ordered out dozen and the guy making the hot dogs kept yacking away, taking his time making our order.

We finally got out box and when we got home, we noticed the buns were pretty dry. The normally steam their buns, but not for our order. I don't know if they stopped steaming the buns, or they just don't care anymore.

Our family has been going to Coney Island since it's opening way back in 1918 and I never would have thought I would ever write a review like this. Ugh.

Coney Island is a Fort Wayne staple and I love their hotdogs..actually their cheeseburgers are good too! But the last two times I've been there, the service has really ticked me off. It took forever for someone to come over and take my order, and it took forever for them to ring me up. And all the workers stand around and do NOTHING. They literally walk right by you and pretend like they don't see a $20 bill sitting on the counter. They are all a bunch of losers. But what do you expect with an absent manager.

We stopped here after seeing such good reviews on Yelp while in Ft. Wayne. Keep an eye out if you're driving--it's just a small building mixed in with all the others on the street.

It was a little more "classic" and "traditional" than we expected, but was a nice place to just kick back and enjoy some food. We all got coney dogs, some got baked beans, some got chili, and some chips. The baked beans were really sweet, almost too sweet, but were still very good. The dogs themselves were delicious. Nothing too extravagant, but tasted great. Steamed buns, good dogs, a somewhat sweet chili.

Food is cheap, menu is simple, service is great, people are friendly. The atmosphere is just a nostalgic, traditional restaurant. (If you've ever been to Kewpee in Lima, it's very similar to that.)

Overall, a pretty good place to stop and grab a quick bite to eat.

I love the hot dogs here! Keep in mind that this isn't a place where you can get Chicago style hotdogs or lavish decked out dogs with 39282 different sauces on it. Their hot dogs are very simple with a few classic ingredients you can add--onions, mustards, and/or chili. That's basically the menu for you. They also have glass bottled soda pop to chase down your hot dogs, and chili.

The decor is kind of diner-style. It's very casual. Everything there is pretty old from the chairs to the cookware. There are pictures everywhere of the staff and the restaurant throughout its history.

I saw some reviews about the hot dogs being undercooked--I've been here several times in the past few years and have never had a digestive issue because of their hot dogs. BUT I can see how these reviewers may feel that it is undercooked. The consistency of the hot dogs are rather soft, softer than say one that you buy at the grocery store and pop in the microwave. No need to fear, it's all cooked well.

I'd come back to this place a thousand times if it didn't kill me to eat that many hot dogs in a lifetime!

P.S. BRING CASH! The last time I was here they did not accept credit card.

The menu is simple.  Coneys, burgers, chili, not much else.  They also serve fountain Pepsi, and have a very old school refrigeration unit that they keep canned and bottled sodas in like Faygo and glass bottle coke. The building is old, and the restaurant is a charming greasy spoon diner with pies in the case behind the counter and an old school cigarette vending machine at the front door.  Reminds me of places my grandfather would tell me about when he was younger. I had heard mixed reviews about this place and being raised on Detroit style coneys I was a skeptic.

The coneys are different then I've ever had before.  Hey use a lightweight chilli with a little meat, standard mustard and onions.  The dog had nice flavor, you can see them grilling right as you walk inside the door. The chili you could barely tell if it was there or not.  I can't say it detracted, but certainly didn't add a new level of flavor.  You can't beat the prices though.  Very inexpensive and very fast service.

I'm giving this place 3 stars for the food, the 4th is for the nostalgia factor.  The food is worth a try, but the experience brings back good old memories.

Steamed buns are great, 40's ambience is great, and love the little bottles of coke, & paired with christmas lights in the winter makes this a great little stop for a snack and a chance to warm up.  However, I am just not a fan of their hot dogs and their special sauce.  I'd get almost anything else to eat besides that.  I am pretty sure you have to be brought up eating these to enjoy them.

I recently moved to Fort Wayne to attend IPFW and my friend took me to this place. We got there and parked around back. I started walking around front and he told me we just go through the back. That was awesome, just walked through the kitchen and sat down. Doesn't get much more old school than this. Food is good and cheap, just remember to bring cash.

I stopped in after two years to check out one of my favorite chili dog restaurants. They were much busier than my
previous time there. We had to wait about ten minutes for a couple stools at the counter. No biggie. Everything was the same. Tasty spicy Greek style chili over a tasty dog and steamed buns. The waitress was wearing a "we have steamed buns" tee shirt. I had a bowl of chili "soup" and three chili dogs with a glass bottle Coke. Tasty times two.

To the gentleman who doesn't like his dogs to be pink inside, hot dogs are cooked before they hit the grill. There is no such thing as a raw hot dog. Yes the natural casing dogs with their audible snap are great, but you should make some room for these humble diner dogs too.

What can I say?  This is a Fort Wayne classic!  Coney Island Wiener Stand has been in business since 1914?! That's over 95 years, so let their experience really be the deciding factor that you should go here!

They pride themselves in saying that their buns are steamed, they're still rocking out that   vintage hot dog joint look, and they still offer Coca-cola out of the glass bottles. Everything is time-tested and top-notch  What could be better?!?...  Perhaps efficiency.... There does tend to be times where they receive a bunch of large orders 30+ hot dogs for take-out at one time.  Nothing wrong with big orders but if you happen to be behind them in line for take-out for 2 coney dogs it can be frustrating. Especially if there's three people in front of you with large orders, which has been my most recent experience.

What they need is one of those 20 items or less check-out lines like Target or Wal-Mart.

Back to the review: They serve long-gone Seyfort's Potato chips which used to be a local Fort Wayne business but have since left for Texas or somewhere.  They serve chili, home-made pie, burgers, and hot dogs.  So it's nothing fancy but a definite must-try for Fort Wayne.

Also note, that they do only accept cash.  Just a heads-up.

My first review was from memory,
The last time I was there was about eight years earlier!

And I am not happy to report that there have been some changes, not improvements.

The coffee maker was sent to California, to be rebuilt. Since they could not find any parts (it was a gas powered machine). Then shipped to a museum in Michigan; they did give a history of Coney Island along with some pictures though.

The dogs are still high quality (flavorful), and do not need to be smothered in Coney sauce.
And the hot dog buns still do fall apart, once in a while. When they are made. About one block away in the bakery.
Other than that, it's still about the same.

    THE PICTURES I JUST ADDED:

Life-long resident of Fort Wayne, and in all the years that I have been eating here, I have never been disappointed.  I am kind of a Coney junky - I travel a fair amount for a living, and I make a point of searching out coney joints in every town I travel to.  I can honestly say that I have now had the pleasure of eating in about 50 or so coney dog restaurants, and I have yet to find a place as good as this.  Not sure if it is the food, the service, the little bottles of coke, or the fact that none of these things have changed since I was a kid.  For whatever the reason, this is still my favorite place for a couple of coneys and coke.  I hope it never changes!!!

    Are you kidding???

I read the reviews for this place which is why I went. I love a good hot dog but the problem I had here is I don't like my hot dogs pink like they serve them.

The hot dogs I like usually have spices and have  casing like hot links etc...These reminded me of school cafeteria hot dogs that appear so pink they don't even looked cooked.

I asked for a cheese dog and I ended up with a pink(undercooked looking) hot dog with american cheese slice over the top. I ate it anyway just to not be rude, also I thought what the heck....may as well - surprise me.

I did try the chili and it was ok too. Nothing to knock there.  Overall I was not impressed.

Sorry but Parker's Hot Dogs in Roseville, CA makes a better hot dog
    than  Coney Island.

I have been going to this restaurant ever since I can remember.   In those 42 years very little has changed and that is a great thing!  There is nothing like in Coney and a bowl of chili!  I no longer live in the Fort, but I go back to Coney Island almost every time I come back to visit.

Don't expect the wait staff to write down your order, it's all done by memory.  And last time I was there, they didn't take credit cards, so have some cash in your pocket.  My recommendation from the menu 2 coneys, a bowl of chili, and a bottle (or two...the chili has a little kick) of Coke.

Finally, don't let the "hole-in-the-wall" appearance fool you.  And, if you really want to look like a regular, come in the back door, through the kitchen.  Seriously.

Love this place!   Its just up my ally and literally depending on where you park right by the ally.  Go ahead and seat yourself at the bar or a table, and get ready for coney deliciousness.  So affordable you'd be silly not to get at least 3 dogs, or 2 burgers.  They have Fort Wayne memorabila all around on the walls so you have plenty to look at while munching down.  The staff is very friendly and lively bunch to say the least.  Street parking is available, behind the restaraunt and besides the building in front of the National Tower.  I stop by this place everytime I come to Fort Wayne and am never disappointed.

As a Fort Wayne native - there is nothing better than Coney Island for lunch!  Steam buns, chili sauce with plenty of chopped onions!  Coke in the bottle and the place looks the same today as it did when I was a kid or a college student with a summer job downtown.  My dad coming home from GE with a box of Coney's was a great day!

My  wife and daughters don't understand my excitement - but I go to Coney Island on every trip to the Fort to see my parents!

Once you have had steamed buns - hot dogs are never the same without steamed buns!

Coney Island is great! My father in law ate here as a kid and now my 5 year old loves it too. If I had not grown up in Skevanston, IL ( Poochies and Herm's Palace ) Coney Island would earn 5 stars.

I am a Fort Wayne native and embarrassed to say that I have NEVER eaten here until today.  This place is a classic hole in the wall backed with a great history (family owned and operated since 1914), awesome small town atmosphere with friendly [happy] staff.

For around $10, you can get 2 Coney dogs (get them with everything on top), a cheeseburger, bowl of chili, and a drink.  The Coney dogs are on the "petite" size so if you're just wanting a hot dog here, order at least two.

Although I've had better hot dogs before, there's something definitely special about this place and definitely worth coming back for repeat visits.

This place is amazing! Whenever I am in town I make a point of stopping in for an old school coney. On the  way to Cedar Point, from Indy, with a van load of teenagers....I had to stop in for them to experience the atmosphere, the history, and a coney like they have never had. While there we witnessed a priest from Spain give Coney Island a blessing. I am hoping they will always remember that day and stop back in on their own someday.

I had seen this place featured in Rachael Ray, so I was jazzed when I could make a road trip detour through Fort Wayne.  Consider me really disappointed.  Bad service, the waitress never brought me half of my order, and got my dining partner's order wrong too.  And when you have "cheese dog" on the menu above, "chili dog", I assume the cheese dog will not have chili.  Apparently, I assumed wrong as I was scraping chili off my dog.  No one came to check back, so I finally went to the counter to ask if I could pay my bill and a counter guy was really sarcastic with me (and not in a good way).  So disappointing.  I doubt I'll ever come back.

Both my parents hail from Fort Wayne, so any visit back home included a visit to Coney Island and entering through the kitchen in the back.  Best hot dog sauce in the world.  Fortunately we have a very similar recipe, so we can make it at home in Florida.

I will never eat another coney dog ever again unless it is at this local Fort Wayne restaurant. Customer service is fast and friendly, and will ask you what you need every 5-10 minutes. From the inside of this restaurant, you can just see how the place comes to you as a real, local, inner-city downtown restaurant. By just walking by outside, you can smell the waft of coney dogs and it makes you come inside. My only negative is the parking lot out back. The lot was packed, so I had no choice but to block the alley (which I think is illegal, but I was just getting a dozen dogs to-go). Best restaurant in Fort Wayne along with Power's Hamburgers HANDS DOWN.

PS: A true Fort Wayne native always enters through the back door.

No other restaurant in the history of restaurants will capture my heart as much as Coney Island. Ever. I am normally a vegetarian, but I will eat every hot dog here.

Coney Island, founded in the 1910s, is a hot dog place through and through.  You can get a plain hot dog; a hot dog with their chili (hot, not sweet); or a hot dog with chili, onions, and mustard. Go for the last.

They also serve hamburgers, bowls of chili, chips, and pie. They also serve glass bottles of coke, which is really swell. They do not take any credit or debit cards, so be prepared with cash. But as a hot dog costs about $1.50 with all of the toppings, you might just have that much on hand already.

After my cousin got married, he and the rest of the wedding party came here in their limo.  The manager saw the party and told them that their meal was on the house.  What other restaurant is like that around town?

Passing through, this placed seemed like a good place to try for lunch. It's located right in downtown Fort Wayne and not that far away from our route through Fort Wayne.

I have never, ever had a coney before, so I knew going in this was going to be an interesting experience. The experience actually reminded me of being in a hot dog joint in Queens...

Service was no nonsense. No, grilled onions are not an option, on the owner's order. They did have bottles of Coke and the steamed buns were quite good. I ended up sort of happy I endured the raw onions on my coney-the crunch and sweetness paired well with some really good chili, although perhaps not enough of it. The meat was quite good and moist, but in terms of flavor, just shy of the dogs produced by Vienna's in Chicago.

The barbecue chips were also very good.

Remember, this opinion is coming from a guy who thinks Chicago-style, everything but ketchup hot dogs are the epitome of the hot dog world. Your mileage may vary.

The best coney dogs in this city. I had never heard of or had a coney dog before moving here, and since trying this place, tried others in town, none are as good! I would go here more often, but they only take cash, and we don't carry cash much. The nostalgia of this place is charming and watching them make it in front of you is kinda neat. In my opinion, everyone should at least try this, as long as they like hot dogs!

Talk about old timey atmosphere this place has it.  its  been in business since 1914 serving up the best coney island hot dogs with mustard,  white onions, and "sauce".  Plus  they steam your buns..and who doesn't love that?  6 inches of heaven I tell ya.  and I don't say that about many dogs.  I think Z would agree about that!  i mean the 6 inches of heaven that is..not that Z knows a lot about that kind of stuff but he seemed to enjoy it...huh?
the sauce is chili soup and its mighty good..
hot dog $1.25 extra onions will cost ya 6 cents.
