I have gone to Cooter's multiple times over the years. I love their food, and I get excited when I'm in the area and have an appetite. I went there the other day to treat my long time friend to a birthday dinner. I placed my order, and the was immediately told to leave by the owner of the restaurant section..because he didn't like the person I was with. Straight up said "GET OUT" about 5 times and the cashier said it wasn't a joke, that we had to leave. I was shocked. Normally, I'd stand up for myself but this was just strange and uncalled for. I literally placed my order, and was told to leave. How is that any way to run a business? I feel really bad for the people that work in the kitchen because I know that they are subjected to cruel treatment every day, and I don't know why people think money is worth abuse. Kind of pathetic that they let their obviously miserable boss treat them like crap and say racist, homophobic and sexist things to them constantly. I will make sure I tell everyone I know not to go there, including all my customers at Tulane University- their biggest supporters :).
Review Source:After arriving late to the airport in New Orleans from a rain storm in Atlanta on July 3, 2013. Â I was starving so my friend suggested we get something to eat. Â I forgot to check in :(. Â Cooter Brown's is located on S. Carrollton Ave hidden in a corner. Since it was my first time in New Orleans she recommended I get a po boy. Â I went for the catfish and boy was it delicous. Â I will definitely eat here again and I highly recommend it.
Review Source:While the beer list is quite intimidating, it's excellent for people (like me) attempting to try new beers all the time. Â On a mission to try them all and Cooter Brown's is a great place to start! Â Fun atmosphere while watching sports.
Learn from my mistake .... when ordering RAW oysters, order at the bar. Â If you order at the window, they come out fried. Â oops! Â Despite that mix up, fun atmosphere, and a great chance to try lots of new drinks.
I really want to give this place a better rating but I just can't. 2 stars go to the bar and atmosphere. Great for watching a game, hanging out with friends, and drinking beer. The food is a disgrace. The people that think their cheese-fries are good must have been really drunk. They are dry and the cheese is always burnt. Ick! I got food poisoning from a catfish po-boy and was extremely sick all night long. I called the kitchen manager to let them know that their fish was bad. I thought I was doing the right thing so that nobody else would get sick. I was polite but felt like he needed to know. HE WAS SO RUDE! He insisted that it couldn't have been from his food and they they get their fish fresh every morning. He told me that I was wrong and hung up on me.
That was the only thing I had eaten that day so I know it was from them and I highly doubt that dump of a place gets fresh fish as often as they say. The kitchen is filthy and the food is sub-par.
BEWARE of the seafood. I will never eat there again. I'll probably still go to the bar, though :)
Raw oysters on the half shell ... Fat, juicy, nice size, but not very briny.
Deep fried oysters .... Perfectly deep fried, very tasty batter coating.
"French fries" .... Crinkle cutting new potatoes into coins is sheer genius. As much as I love shoestring fries, these are better. Waaaay better.
Beer .... Lots of flavors, quite a varied selection.
The cheese fries are absolutely perfect, and the Bartender's Special is out of this world! Â Yes, Â it is a bar that people can smoke in. Â Like most bars in New Orleans. Â Knowing that, don't complain about smoke if you brought yourself there. Â Let's act like adults here.
Excellent beer selection, fresh oysters, GREAT bar food, and literally any sporting event you could possibly want to watch can be televised. Â MANY flat screens around the entire place and every sport package imaginable. Â
Absolutely love this place and always come back for more.
I came here on a Sunday night for a late dinner. I had the oyster poboy which was delicious. My boyfriend had one of the pastrami sandwiches and enjoyed that as well. I would definitely recommend the Mac and cheese bites. To die for! Â
The only issue I had was the ambiance. The decorations and the row of tables as well as the TVs lining the entirety of the bar were a little over stimulating. I would definitely change up the decor.
They have a good beer selection and I always love a place where Magic Hat No. 9 is on tap. I would definitely go back again and try the oysters on the half shell. They looked amazing.
I cringe at the thought of Cooter's. I have had fun here, but it was almost exclusively despite the horrible service that I have received. The bartenders make it seem as though you are interrupting them when you try to order a drink. The food is okay, but far from great. The only reason I go to Cooter's is for oysters.
The only time I thought I had received good service was from the Oyster Shucker. He was a younger guy and actually forgot my order. Â I was cool with it because it actually felt as though I was not bothering him when I checked on the order and he realized he forgot me. Someone making a mistake forgetting my order was the best service I have had here.
If i could give this place a zero I would. They were rude, obnoxious, and disrespectful. Demanding tips and delaying our food orders talking about "none of them tipped me some I'm going to take my time and take a cigarette break. " the food was not good enough to be keeping those jerks in their jobs.
Review Source:Very fun bar and if you want to catch a game (particularly LSU), you might not find a more accommodating venue. Â Big screens, little screens.......with a robust beer and spirits selection in the corner of Orleans Parish. Â This makes for a great START to a fun-filled evening. Â Very attentive and professional service.
This as a "sports bar" vibe so know that going in, it isn't necessarily a beer/spirits connesuer type of spot
I loves me some oysters. Â That ain't no secret. Â Well, it's not a secret anymore. Â I decided to give Cooter Brown's a shot. Â After all, they do mention that they are an oyster bar. Â This place certainly doesn't have fancy accomodations, but that's part of its charm. Â What it doesn't have in charm, it more then makes up for in delicious oysters. Â Not overly briney and not too big. Â The perfect size to fit on a saltine if that's how you prefer to consume them. Â
I was a bit confused when I first walked in. Â There were no servers. Â I wandered over to the "oyster bar", which isn't really a bar, rather a single gentlemen shucking oysters and asked how it all worked. Â I was informed I simply put my order in with him. Â Simple enough. Â A couple minutes later, I was dining on my favorite form of seafood. Â Ahhhh, the simple pleasures. Â They've also got a great setup of TVs for watching sports. Â I didn't drink since I was driving, but they've got a ton of beers here. Â I recommend taking a cab so you can eat, drink and watch sports. Â
Cons: Â Cooter Brown's allows smoking and is 21 and up. Â That means no family outings with the little ones for oysters. Â Parking sucks too. Â
Despite these cons, I'll go back for oysters.
Great beer selection, oysters aplenty, and hot food from the grill. My favorite were the disco fries (cheese fries with gravy).
Oysters are served simply on the half shell. A full toppings bar allows you to put together any combo of condiments you could think of, and plenty of crackers too.
Absolutely the best Muffaletta in New Orleans hand down!!
It is a little shady on the outside, you walk right in side and it looks like another dive bar, and or a bar that the local College kids go to. You must order the Muffaletta!! Depending how hungry you are you may only want half, I got a whole sandwich and luckily I did because later that night we went to bourbon street and needed something to eat to sober me up.
There are many places to get a Muffaletta in New Orleans, and this IS the PLACE to get it!!
I really don't know where we were walking to when we took a hike to Cooter Brown's.
Why am I walking on the streets with no sidewalks and with cars almost clip me on my side? There must be another way to walk here from Dante's Kitchen. Btw, Google Map did warn "Use caution - This route may be missing sidewalks or pedestrian paths." Trust me, this is true....
Watching Football, Drinking Beers and Eating Fried Seafood did calm me down a lot. 60 different beers on tap with some local selections I never heard of and another 400 different bottled beers from around the world............ decision and more decision.
While drinking my beer, my friend then start stuffing me with some deep fried food: Oyster! That's is much better than other pub grub I have at home!
Cooter Brown's is a great place to just hang out with friends. Not easy to get a table during game time so check the schedule before popping by.
Sweet, sweet Cooter Brown's, I have dreamed (and drooled) about your cheese fries since my undergrad days at Loyola, a decade ago (gulp).
A Wisconsin girl in the Bayou, if I wanted to see the Packers or Badgers, I had to head to Cooters - not that you had to twist my arm. Fresh oysters, a hugely amazing beer selection and the cheese fries that all other cheese fries fail to live up to were enough to get me up for those early Big Ten starts on a Saturday morning.
Imagine my glee when my return to Cooter's found the cheese fries unchanged and many cider options added to the long list of beer. Add a shrimp and oyster po-boy and a dessert daiquiri from across the street and my Uptown soul was happy and content. The weather was great, so we sat outside and relived more than one weekend spent in that particular corner of the Riverbend.
Thank you Cooter's for being exactly as I left you.
** 3.5 stars **
An unassuming neighborhood sports bar that also has an outstanding and extensive globe-trotting draft and bottled beer list. These things seem to be mutually exclusive in NYC. Â I should qualify that by saying Cooter's beer list also has every lightweight, mass market beer across the planet, but that just makes it merrily equal opportunity. Â There are forty taps to choose from, who's complaining? Â Here your beer snobs and Miller Light fans can rub shoulders at the bar and enjoy a game together.
For food, they serve up no-frills pub grub, a generic menu of sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, salads. Â A self-described oyster bar, they also have fried seafood, ordered in a separate room; order and pay, pick up after they fry those up fresh. Â The platter of fried Louisiana oysters is characteristic of classic NOLA fried foods; a thick but unexpectedly light breading, easy to bite into, juicy inside. Â Can't eat too many, but they're very good versions of that local specialty.
Saloon-like and unpretentious, the space is enormous, the cavernous main area filled with communal tables and multiple giant television screens showing different games simultaneously. Â A semi-separated front bar area with some booths and bar tables is cozier. Â A back bar open on the weekends in the main room. Â Some picnic style tables outside. Â
I don't recommend following our naive stroll to Cooter's along Leake Avenue; it certainly wasn't designed for pedestrians, with a sidewalk that randomly disappears. Â Definitely drivable, with parking on Leake, and just a block from the St. Charles Ave streetcar's turn from St. Charles to S. Carrollton.
Not my sort of place to hang out, mostly on account of my lack of interest in both organized sports and the communal viewing of it, but even I could see its a great place for a game, some good beers, and hearty food.
Great place. Worth the hike out there. Too bad not many tourists make it out here. Just leave them in the French quarter getting drunk on $5 hurricane 1/2 gallons I guess.
Great oysters, great price
Great beer, tons of choice
Can't really say anything different than what everyone else says. I'm not a big sports fan, but damn that's impressive to see so many TVs. Â I've never seen so many different sports games on at the same time in my life. Â Like being in a Best Buy show room.
Great dive bar. Â Great excuse for tourists to escape the trap of the French quarter. Â Since it was pouring rain that day, we were by far the only tourists in there. Â Well worth the soggy socks afterwards from all those puddles.
Cooter Brown's is a great place to enjoy the game or some good bar food and beer with friends. Their numerous big screens and projector make it a popular place for many sporting events, so be aware if you are just out to enjoy your friend's company. When I lived Uptown one of my favorite pastimes was to catch the St. Charles streetcar and hop off at St. Charles and Carrollton. An afternoon of beer, sports, and cheese fries later, I would hop back on and return home. They have tons of beer on tap or in the bottle (one of the best selections in NOLA), a good price on oysters, and overall decent bar food. The kitchen is separate from the bar, so don't expect your bartender to take your food order. The clientele ranges but consists mostly of college-aged and the older regulars. Overall: A chill bar to spend Sunday watching sports or people watching.
Review Source:Local Hangouttttttttt!
Go here for watching sports. Â We went last night to watch Monday Night Football (Saints vs. Eagles) and loved the atmosphere. Â It's got lots of TVs and great energy. Â (See my pic of the TVs. Â Whoa) Â Â You'll here Who Dat cheers and lots of heated opinions on refs' calls. Â FUN STUFF!!!
Now to food, yes, eat here. Â I wish I would have taken a pic of the menu, but no worries. Â You can pull it up on their helpful website. Â Husband and I did halfsies on the "Radiator's Special" and the 1/2 Muff + a side of fries. Â Nice portions. Â Delicious flavor. Â Quick service. Â Just. Â What. You. Want. Â YAY!
Beer! Â Lots and lots of selection on beers inclusing several on tap. Â I especially love how the menu calls out which are "local". Â I also love how they have a water station. Â I am a water-a-holic especially when having other beverages. Â I so wish all other bars did this. Â I hate bothering bartenders for water. Â
This place is especially cool for us now that we live in San Francisco. Â It brings all the elements I love about New Orleans together in one spot.
It's solid. Â Go here.
Came over here on my trip to New Orleans. Needed a sports bar to watch college football and came on a friend's suggestion. Definitely a dive bar. Good amount of TVs for the many football games that were on (came after the LSU game).
Had their catfish po-boy, which was excellent and a good price. They also have a really good beer selection, including local beers.
Place gets 3 stars as my experience was tainted by a "bus" of bros/sausage fest that came in around halftime of my game. They also need to have their restroom cleaned more often.
Maybe a new class  - dive bar with enormous beer selection, great oyster bar and enough TVs to show all the games?
I Â typically visit CB 8 - 9 times during the football season, maybe once the rest of the year, so my impression is strongly biased by the pro football crowd. Â Family seating which I'm not a big fan of, but works well during the football season. Â No worst than sitting in the stands.
There are probably a couple of others, but Cooters is the only bar I am aware of where you can see all the games anytime. Â Lots of sports bars will show out of town games when the Saints aren't playing, but you are out of luck if the Saints are on at the same time. Â This is the one of the few places you can go and be assured that your team will be on. Â Also, there will be other folks from your town rooting for your team
CB is located on a crowded corner where Carrolton intersects St. Charles and Leake. Â Surprisingly, there is a lot of parking although it is not quite what you might be used to. Â If you have enough ground clearance, park on street side of the railroad tracks. Â No ground clearance? Â You are probably better off parking on the levee side. Â It will make sense when you see it.
Enormous beer selection, if you can't find something to drink here, you aren't thirsty. Â Large selection of bar food, runs from average to excellent. Nothing "to die for".
Restrooms are a disgrace. Â You've been warned! Â I've been in bars in the middle of China with better restrooms and that is saying something. Â
Service is good. Â They get backed up on policing the tables when it is crowded, but generally they do a reasonable job. Â The folks behind the bars hustle. Â The back bar is usually less crowded if you are just getting a draft. Â
Fun place to watch a game. Â I plan to be back.
Maybe it was because we rolled (literally) into Cooter Brown's after an epic face-stuffing session at Cochon, but I just couldn't muster up the energy or stomach room to truly enjoy myself here. I really wish I could have because that draft beer collection is impressive.
I am definitely not above a dive bar and even spent some hard earned quarters at the juke box while taking slow and steady sips of my strawberry Abita. We waited and waited to hear our totally awesome song choices play, and then waited some more. After a couple drinks, as the place got more crowded and smokier and our songs still didn't play, we were out.
I'm not sure I would go out of my way to visit Cooter Brown's next time I'm in town, but I won't scratch it off the list completely!
Cooter Browns is my go to place to grab oysters, I must get them here at least once a week! The shucker is also so nice, I tend to like oysters on the smaller side and he always does a great job picking them out for me. My favorite part about Cooter Browns has to be that you can make your own cocktail sauce! I love mine with the works plus loads of horseradish so the fact that I can make it myself is important to me.
I'm not really a fan of the fry up though, I've had their shrimp poboy before and it was completely average. I must say I do like their Chilli Cheese Fries though, the way they are cut is so unique!
Finally, Cooter Browns is the perfect place to watch a game with friends. Tons of TVs, lots of beer to choose from, a friendly crowd, and great oysters. So what if it smells like a bar, it IS one! What else can you ask for?
My friends and I came here so that my husband could watch his GA Bulldogs play their season opener, and this turned out to be the perfect place to relax and catch a football game. While the power was still out in most of the city in the wake of Issac, this was a great place to escape the heat and enjoy some cold beer.  There were plenty of TVs playing various games and a great selection refreshing  alcoholic beverages . My friends and I shared a few pitchers and I partook in an amazing Bloody Mary garnished with pickled string beans (yum!!)
In terms of food, we ordered the chili cheese fries which were incredibly good. The fries were actually round sliced with gooey cheese topped with delicious chili. The portion size was just perfect for four people. Â My husband and I also shared the alligator sausage po'boy. which was pretty tasty and just enough to share between two people.
Service was pretty good and we received our food and drinks rather quickly. Cooter Browns' was definitely a solid sport-bar.
I really, really like Cooter Brown's... which, for some reason, kind of surprises me. I've had a great time every visit I've made. It's very convenient for me, just a short ride on the street car and I'm there. They have a pretty darn good beer selection, including a large amount of stuff on tap. Prices are in line with what you'd expect. They also serve High Life and PBR if it's a budget night.
It's a great place to watch football, just get there early if you want a seat. Most of the time, I'm against "family style" seating but it works during football season. If there's not a game, I usually sit at the bar. They also have some pretty good bar food and even oysters.
There are usually a lot of college students, but also a more than fair share of us older folks, too. The servers are always friendly and acommodating. It is a smoking bar, so beware of that.
They also have a coin-operated breathalyzer on the wall, which tickles me to no end. Only in New Orleans!
An uptown institution, Cooters maintains a holy trinity of dozens of ice cold beers on tap in large pint glasses, fresh oysters in the shell, and a large menu of top notch bar food. The walls are also filled with plasma televisions such that you could come here with the boys or the girls and catch the game on a Sunday and have a hell of a good time. Prices are very reasonable. Beer service and oyster service is generally very fast.
Food service is generally slow and a little surly, so be ready for a little tude and to wait in the food line. They seem to be understaffed and a bit grumpy in the kitchen. But who cares, after a few beers you'll already be in a better mood and thinking that Cooters is the bomb! Â Drink a few, try those jalapeno poppers, cheese fries, the yummy seafood platter, 30 different poboys to choose from, yatta, yatta, etc, etc.
Back when I was a wee-pup going to school at Tulane, they had a t-shirt that patrons could win by drinking one beer from every location in the world, which advertised their well-stocked menu. Not sure if they still have this offer.
In any case, always a treat, it is still nestled along the river bend at the corner of St. Charles and Carrollton; CBs remains a epicurean NOLA institution. How can we resist stopping in when the streetcar line ends a block a way? Just hearing those streetcar bells at the end of the line awakens my dormant impulses and l'eau à la bouche like one of Pavlov's dogs, hankering for some Coooter B's.
This bar is great. Â The seating is a little funky because there are just long ass tables for you to share with everyone, but the beer and food make up for the fact that I may have to talk to strangers. Â Or throw the stink eye. Â Either way. Â
I had the NOLA Philly (alligator sausage, peppers and onions, BBQ sauce, and American cheese) and it was freaking amazing. Â I may have been half-lit, so take this for what it's worth, but the alligator sausage here is SO GOOD. Â It's spicy and crispy and wonderful. Â The beer selection is also really great even for a craft beer snob like myself. Â
Also? Â I don't care about sports, but if you do you're in luck...there are TVs EVERYWHERE. Â Fun for everyone.
Cooter Brown's is fantastic. Â Not only is it a great place to watch a game (the place is huge, has two bars with a HUGE beer selection and lots of tvs) but they have FANTASTIC oysters. Â
Whenever I go here my friend and I usually split a dozen raw oysters and some fries. Â The oysters are really BIG and juicy and full of flavor. Â I've found at places like Acme, the oysters tend to be on the smaller side, but that wasn't an issue here. Â The fries we ordered were topped with chili and cheese and we ate them with a fork. Â So good!
If oysters aren't your thing, Cooter's also serves different kinds of sandwiches, burgers and po boys. Â They also have different types of hot dogs and side orders such as chicken fingers and mozzarella sticks.
Whether you are stopping in for the game, a beer with friends or dinner, you are sure to find what you are looking for here. Â Please note: the online menu is not up to date AT ALL, so be sure to look the bar menu over, before ordering.
Brightly lit (thanks to the glare of tons of flat screen TVs) + the stench of cigarettes and greasy bar food + beers galore  = not really my scene, but I don't hate this bar at all. In fact, I think it's A-OK.
I am really impressed with their taps. As in, they are clean. When I ordered an Ace Pear cider and realized it was on tap and not in the bottle as I prefer, I almost had the bartender stop pouring. After all, I couldn't rid myself of the image of the dried ketchup and grease smear on the table we were sitting at. I rarely, if ever, drink anything from taps because I am all too familiar with lifting the pint to my mouth and that sour, dirty smell wafting up to my nostrils. NOT here. This was a perfect pour, nice and cold and crisp and cleeeean.
I'm sure I'll be back. I just need to keep my elbows off the table.
Oh, Cooter's. You were my place. I would go there every week for oysters and beer...
until there were worms alllll over my oysters. Â Complete disappointment. Okay, maybe that was just one time, but the manager didn't handle the situation well. Gave us our money back, but was uninterested and rude. You're like the loyal lover we want to marry, until one day out of nowhere- betrayal. For shame, Cooter's. Expected better from you.
Cooter Brown's is a cool bar.
I have been coming to this bar for nearly 15 years. While I haven't been in at least six, I am pleased to report that it hasn't really changed. The only noticeable differences are that the prices have gone up and the televisions are modern. Normally a business has to change with the times, but in this case, change would be bad.
I would classify Cooter Brown's as a classy dive bar. While this may not make much sense, it is hard to call a bar with well over 100 beers a dive bar. What does make it a dive bar is the atmosphere. It is smoky, dirty and still has the love note I wrote on the mirror in 1998.
The selection of beer is amazing. I can't comment on the food because honestly, my memory of those days is a bit foggy. I hear the food is very good so hopefully I will get to return soon and sample some of it.
I highly recommend this bar. If you need a place to drink beer and hang out with friends, this is a great place. if you need a fancy cocktail, you may want to go somewhere else.
