We visited this winery when we were visiting family for Thanksgiving in November 2012. Â We just opened a bottle of the wine this past week and I remembered I still needed to write a review!
This is a small/cramped winery, but I love how they do the tastings. Â Rather than just standing around at most wineries, it is bar style so you can sit and enjoy your tastings, rather than rushing through. Â The tastings are much different than the ones in NC and TN - where you get to try all of their wines or most of their wines, by just having a small sip. Â Here you get to taste 4 wines but you get large portions. Â If I were by myself, I would have wanted the way NC/TN did theirs. Â Since Kevin and I went, he got 4 different than I did, so in all we tried 8 of their wines. Â We tried the sweet/fruity wines. Â I liked the Ambush, but Kevin just thought it was okay. Â We thought the Strawberry was okay as well. Â The others were just so-so or not liked. Â But the one that we loved - the Peach. Â We ended up having 3/4ths of the bottle the first night we opened it this week. Â Luckily we have family in the area and we will have to request that they bring us a bottle the next time that they come and visit us!
I do love their wine glasses, it definitely was a nice souveneir for us to bring back with us to NC. Â I like the image of the longhorn on front - very Texas, and I like how they have the winery name on it, plus mentions Fort Worth Stockyards - just makes it very memorable.
I give them 4 stars just because it is a little cramped and because most of the wines we tried were just so so. Â I do give that peach wine 5 stars though!
This tiny little spot just a block away from the rodeo and stockyards is a treat amongst the cobblestones, bricks, and business of the Old Town Fort Worth Scene.
All of the wines you can sample at Cowtown are produced in house and change seasonally. We took advantage of a gift certificate with our family and tried four wines for 8 dollars per person (and that included the keepsake glass to take home). The staff was friendly and we tried some delightful wines.
I'd go back again, for certain, the next time I'm in the area.
We bought my Mother-in-law a gift certificate here for a tasting and a bottle of wine with a custom label. Â When we came out to Texas for our Christmas/New Years celebration my in-laws decided it would be fun for my husband and I to go with them to the tasting. Â It's a pretty small place - just a bar, no extra tables. Â It was crowded when we came in but we were greeted promptly and snagged four seats. Â The tastings are $8.00 and come with a complimentary wine glass with the Cowtown Winery logo. Â I was pretty impressed with the wine selections. Â Try the Texas Gold (a cherry chocolate port) and the Painted Lady if you're a sweet/dessert wine lover like I am. Â Really yummy and great use of infusing fruit into wine. Â
Overall the experience was good.  Our server was nice and fairly knowledgeable.  I took away one star because the way the custom wine label works was not explained very well to me over the phone when I made the purchase and I wasn't told that we had to come in a certain day of the week to have the label printed. A heads up would have been nice...  But It all worked out in the end and everyone was really friendly - so I can recommend this place with confidence.
I have been to this wonderful little winery at least once a week for the last month. I think the manager Lisa is a pure delight! Her daughter Emily also works there and is very sweet and enjoyable too. The sweet wines are the best I have had in years. I plan on bringing friends and family to this little gem in cowtown for many years. They also have some really great little trinkets for purchase. I truly believe anyone that loves wine will love this place and all who work there.
Review Source:Cute little wine shop near the Stockyards. Â We stopped in because a shop owner across the street recommended their Wine-a-ritas. Â They were good, but not quite worth the $7 price tag-especially for the tiny portion you get...although, the tiny portion was about all I could handle, very tart and very sweet. Â They seemed to have a nice selection of wine, would definitely stop back if I was in the area and looking for a decent bottle.
Review Source:Cute little place in Fort Worth. The wine is made in house (my favorite was the Sangiovese) and you can either do a tasting or order by the glass or by the bottle. It has live music and the good part is that is not too loud so you can actually chat with your friends. I went with a couple of friends and even though it was a long drive to get there we thought it was worth it until we were told they didn't have any restrooms! Say what?
Anyway, the staff is very friendly and we got to keep the glasses as souvenirs! I don't think I will scratch this one from my list :)
I had a little time to kill while waiting on some friends, so I decided, "why not take a wine flight?" I'm not a super wine connoisseur, but I'm a pretty big fan of the grape. Â I tend to lean toward less sweet wines, so I took a flight from those selections. Â They had a port under those selections, which was little odd, but I Â tried it anyways, and I ventured over to the semi-sweets for one tasting. Â The wine flight was reasonably priced at $8 ($14 if you want the glass).
I loved the Sangiovese and the Cab. Â Both were so good, I bought a bottle of each. Â The Texas Gold Cherry-Chocolate port was a bit too sweet for me, but I can see how people who prefer sweeter wines would love it as a dessert wine, especially with a flourless chocolate cake. Â The Rodeo Red was wayyyy to sweet for my palate.
They also have some cutesy wine accessory stuff in there, and you can get WINE TO GO. Â What? Â Yes. Â You can purchase a cup to sip outside of the stores while you peruse the Stockyards or Exchange Street. Â The staff was very nice and helpful. Â I didn't realize I walked in near closing time, but they didn't rush me. Â I appreciated that, and I tipped accordingly!
It's a great place to meet up with a friend after work or for a relaxing afternoon. Â I will be going back!
I was disappointed with my experience at cowtown winery. I purchased a groupon which was for a gourmet cheese tasting for two. I went with a friend and planned on doing two flights with possibly ordering more glasses after finding one we liked. When our "cheese plates" were brought out it was on paper plates and included crackers, grapes? laughing cow cheese wedges, a plastic wrapped cheddar slice, and two other cheese wedges in similar style to laughing cow. The salami was packaged in shrink wrap plastic and we couldn't even get the package open. I came an expected to receive the cheese board featured in the photos from the winery but was extremely disappointed! None of the wines were our particular taste but tasting was fun. When we were given the Chardonnay to taste the girl told us "it is much darker than usual bc our barrel went bad therefore it tastes much like whiskey"... Um ok? Overall pretty disappointing. My groupon cost the same amount as the cheese plate on the menu but we got an extra cheese plate for free. In the future, Â if I was already in the stockyards I might pop in or a single glass or possibly try a winarita but I won't be making any special trips to this winery.
Review Source:Great atmosphere and very good wine. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, and live music on Friday nights and Sunday afternoon. We love going there and tasting a flight and enjoying a glass of our favorite of the day. Wine is made and bottled on site from California grapes. If you are in the Stockyards be sure to stop in for a glass of wine or a wine-a-rita . Thanks to the manager and staff for providing us with an excellent place to enjoy good wine and good atmosphere!!!
Review Source:The sweet wines are really super sweet. Think juice or a liquid syrup but the staff person, who was the reason for third star, was willing to switch us over to a different tasting. The pours are good, four tastings it equals just about 2 glasses of wine.
Plus wine-a-ritas to go!
I'm definitely not In Boston anymore!!!
I've written about Texas-based wine enterprises before, and it's got to be a dilemma when you're thinking long and hard about opening one up, because A) people love wine...everywhere and B) there are regular and intense biases that most folks bring into any given wine tasting situation. To listen to some you'd think that long established wine growing regions are the only ones that could possibly produce drinkable vintages, and that's frankly not true. Your odds may go way up there, but that doesn't mean you have a zero percent chance of tasting something worthwhile grown elsewhere. It is, to a degree, debatable that much of the wine business is a marketing conversation. I digress.
Nervous wine drinkers rejoice, all of the wines they're pouring at Cowtown Winery are borne of Californian grapes, then processed and blended when applicable at the Cowtown location. What that means is that for even the most closed mind, you'll get your West Coast wine. For those who appreciate the Texan touch, the wines are actually being made in house. The best of both worlds for some. It's super quaint in here, and they seem to be pretty savvy on the social media front. I dropped in for a glass this week, but the flights looked interesting enough that I may have to do one of those next time I'm in the Stockyards area. Others have noted that the pours tend to be pretty liberal, and I'd agree. You won't confuse a trip here with an afternoon in Napa, but there's plenty to like nonetheless.
Cowtown fits right in with the stockyards with it's rustic decor and southern hospitality.
Cowtown is affiliated with D'vine Wines, a company that buys grape juice and makes and bottles their own wines. The three wines I tried were OK. It is definitely worth enjoying a flight and/or a glass but I didn't like one enough to purchase a bottle. Â $7-$8 you gets you flight of your choice of either red, white, sweet wines or a full glass of wine. Considering they have a heavy hand when it comes to pours, this is a great deal. Add another $6 to your flight purchase and you can get a glass of wine to sip at their bar or you can take it to go. If you purchase a flight, you get to keep the glass! Some people take wine and beer to the sidewalk to enjoy as they watch the cattle drive that happens twice daily at 11:30am and 4pm.
You can have custom wine labels made here for the wine you purchase to make for a special gift. They also serve wineritas and have cheese with meat plates to pair with your wine.
They have live music perform from 6pm-8pm on Fridays. You can find a list of the music schedule on their website.
A gem in the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards! I was very impressed from the moment I stepped into this quaint winery. The staff was friendly and informative, the prices were excellent for a boutique winery like this, and the International award-winning wine, which is made on site, TOTALLY exceeded my expectations (hint: the Sangiovese is killer!). You won't be disappointed!
Review Source:I love this winery! Love, love, love! I tasted a few and dank a few glasses then ordered 12 bottles for home. I even got a souvenir glass with my tasting. My favorite part was the glass of wine I could take to go. Apparently you can drink wine down the street there. Bonus points. The atmosphere is quaint and very country. They have different things you can purchase there...not just wine. My favorite wine is the chocolate cherry port. Way yum! I can't wait until I get my bottles to enjoy at home...yet I also look forward to going back to taste more. Sigh I love you Cowtown Winery.
Review Source:First thought when i walked in here was that i walked into a very small, but nicely decorated wine bar that complimented the stockyards.  The manager was very nice and made small talk when things were quite.  This place is a local winery that brings the grapes in from california from what i understand  The selection of red wines is very limited, but there are several wines that are very fruity that they bottle.  I highly recommed this wine bar to anyone who is in the stockyards to stop on by and have a drink, but as far as actually going there i think there i think you would be much better off at a different wine bar.  With this being said they do bottle the wine here in Texas, so that does put a spin on this bar and if your more for something that is as local as can be, this would be your place.
