I heard, after leaving that the place is being sold, but that isn't any reason for the poor service! Â Sat at the bar. Â The young guy never acknowledged me and after 5 minutes my friend showed up. Â I had to loudly ask for service and he came over and took my beer order and not my friends! Â Then we had to ask to order food because he never came back. Â Then when the food finally came he never asked how we were..., we had to call him over to get another beer and we had to ask for the bill. Â He never made eye contact, never asked how dinner was and very meakly said thanks at the end. Â
All the while the older guy and a younger girl came behind the counter and neither of them said hello or made eye contact. Â
Food: Â The large order of fish and chips consisted of one large fillet and the small order (my friend ordered it) consisted of two smaller fillets that in total were the same size as the large one.
Sad that just because it is closing that service is/was (this was July 3rd) so bad!
Simply one of the worst meals I have had in a bar, anywhere. Our waitress got most of our order wrong. Fries and curry sauce  were cheap oven fries with store bought curry sauce, burger was dry and overcooked and missing the extras I ordered.
I should point out that I am British. I realize our food is not great in the Old Country, but this was downright offensive! Â
Avoid at all costs. This place should be ashamed of itself!
This is my go-to-place on Friday evenings. It's inviting, relaxed and has just enough light to see clearly - but not too clearly. I can't speak to the patio, as I believe God invented air conditioning for a reason. Then I'm out before the late night funky grooves cleanse the place of its charm. Attend that at your own risk.
The food is fantastic*, though I have to admit that I stick to mostly safe choices. It's kind of hard to screw up that which is deep fried, beefy and/or cheesy. If it's all three at the same time... yowzah. The fish and chips are frickin awesome.
*With the exception of perhaps half the British fare. I realize that's a big exception considering the theme, but it's not their fault. You can't fix British "cuisine". ;^)
The (non-sugarfied, non-neon) drinks are even better. My favorite is Scott's take on a Manhattan. I believe he skips the bitters, ups the alcohol ratio and uses Bourbon instead of rye whiskey. It's warm with just a hint of sweet and makes me appropriately fuzzy.
The service is mostly good, though it depends on who's there and how busy it is. I mostly don't notice as I'm usually distracted with good food, good drink and good company. Now if I could just get them to call me "Norm!".
Came here on a warm Friday evening, had a later dinner than usual. This place offers patio seating, which was nice for enjoying the weather at the time, and also because dogs are allowed in this area. I find it odd that there's a red phone booth (like the kind you would see a superhero transform in), but there's no phone inside, as if it's been pried off. The service is great - they regularly check up on you (unlike many other places, where the outdoor seating area rarely receives any service), and they even provide water in a doggie bowl if you bring your pet with you!
Ordered one of the popular menu items, Fish & Chips: a filet of wild, Icelandic cod hand dipped in special Bass ale batter, served crispy hot with fries & tartar sauce, $12.95. I thought the fish would come in strips, but not a huge deal, especially since they give a generous amount of fish. I would have liked the fish to be cooked a little longer. It was a nice golden color on the outside, but a little chewy on the inside (the fish meat), not the kind of chewy you get when you over cook steak, but the kind of chewy when you undercook fish. A couple more minutes or so would have also made the skin crispier. The fries were good though! Doesn't need ketchup, though it's not bad with the tartar sauce. Warm, thick, and soft starchy goodness mmm.
Note: They have daily specials Sunday-Thursday. Mind as well add in the remaining 2 days of the week, IMO. Also, this place has DJ & dancing on Friday and Saturday nights.
3 stars for the food, 4 stars for the service.
I grew up in Danville and I've been going here for years. Â They have Happy Hour everyday from 2:30pm - 6pm and they have a daily food special from Sunday - Thursday. Â Their lunch menu runs from 11:30am - 3pm.
The main reason why I go here is when I'm taking my dog (Mochi) out with me for lunch/dinner. Â They are very accommodating, as they always have a water dish for my dog. Â I'm usually always dining at their outdoor patio, which is located right in front of their entrance. Â Since this is Danville, I always meet some of the nicest people while dining at "The Crown" or local families walking along Hartz Ave. who are interested in meeting Mochi.
I've been to many restaurants where the quality if service is not as good when you dine at their outdoor patios, as the majority of the time you feel forgotten or ignored from their staff. Â From all my experiences at "The Crown", I've never felt neglected, as the waiters & waitresses are always making multiple trips for their customers at their outdoor patio.
Their food is okay to above average, but I definitely love their customer service! Â For that reason alone, I'm a customer for life; especially for any businesses that is kind & friendly to my dogs.
Great spot in Danville! The food is really great - my dads "go to" is the bubble and squeak, my mom loves the fish and chips (HUGE pieces of fish) and I enjoy the Tandoori Chicken App and the lunch special of either Small burger and fries (great if you have a small appetite) or the sandwich and sides combo.
Drinks are always cold and great deals for Happy Hour.
The nicest people ever working here- always willing to go the extra distance to help you out.
The patio here is really nice and a great people watching spot for downtown Danville. At night on Fridays and Saturdays there's a DJ and it gets pretty busy so it's best to stake out a spot early.
One of my more favorite spots in Danville when you're not looking to drop a bunch of money - definitely my pick over Petes or Norms.
We've always come here with friends and family for late night parties and have always had a good time. It takes a little bit of effort when it gets crazy busy to get a drink, but no more than any other bar. Â Try your best to become fast friends with one of the bartenders and that will really go a long way. Â Nice when the dance floor opens up and it's usually not a drama fest when we've been in there.
Review Source:The Crown had been my "go to" Pub for the last 12 years for their Fish & Chips, but the quality of service and food has been declining for the past couple of years. Â The Fish and Chips with a side of curry sauce was very over priced for the portion size. They were out of cider for a Snake Bite? How does a British pub run out of Cider? Â Time to head to Red Coats in Pleasanton....
Review Source:Tried the salmon avocado sandwich - I really enjoyed it. Â But i really wish they would serve fresh fries, not the frozen variety served at every bar. Â BF had the chips and chips...was hoping for better. Â Petes Brass serves a better version. Â My daughter had the pork sliders and coleslaw, too sweet and they need a new recipe for slaw - too bland.
Review Source:Another great meal in Danville.
Fish and chips were perfectly done. Â Not a drop of grease to be found. Â Â My wife had the corn beef and cabbage and it too was perfect. Â The atmosphere inside is as close to england as you will get in the USA. Â The drink menu includes a variety of good drinks. Â Â There was a bread pudding on the menu that I will hopefully report on in the near future.
Completely empty on the Friday before Christmas at 5 pm. Kinda weird, but hey, I'm new here maybe there's something I don't know. I guess it turns into some sort of clubby place at night. Standard bar fare here. Pretty hard to mess up super deep fried foods. Great to see London Pride on tap. Sure would've been nice to have some real pub ambiance though! The search for a good pub continues...
Review Source:We ate here early on a Friday night - you could tell that they were preparing the entertainment later. Â Husband had the fish and chips; I had the shepherd's pie. Â Think we had an appetizer but not sure what it was. Â In any event, the food was fine. Â We'd go back but we've moved from the area, and it's not worth the drive back.
Review Source:Overall, I'm not too impressed with the food here. Â It tends to be lacking in flavor, for the most part. Â I've had both the fish and chips and a curry dish. Â The curry dish was better, in my opinion, but the rice seemed to be a bit dry.
The service was pretty good and the decor is nice. Â I haven't been here for any events, so I can't say for sure, but I'm sure that they're probably a lot of fun given the right crowd.
Have had some of the worst experiences here with one particular bartender (who has a bunch of bad tattoos). Â I waited at the bar for 30 mins while he served everybody but me. Â When I complained to him he threw me out of the bar, I was dead sober. Â I will never go back. Â I've never tried to the food here....
Review Source:Such a fan! Was in danville for the thursday street fair  and everything had a ridiculously long wait. We decided to pop in here because me and the two friends were starving and it was disgustingly hot.
Pros
Their trivia night is super fun.
their quesedilla was large and def filled me up
mozzerlla sricks were bomb
large selection of beers on tap
full bar
cheap drinks (nine cactus cooler shots which usually go for 11 a pop were only 40!)
Owner is adorable!
Cons
Until one of our other party members showed up  the bartender could have cared less if we sat ther all night. He knew her so voila better service.
service was realllly shaky. Granted it was a busy night but knowing that there was going to be a street fair you would think that it would be handled accordingly. I hate to wonder what hot august nights is going to be like.
really loud, like literally if I wasn't practically sitting in my firends lap because 4 of us were corwded around a two top I wouldn't have been able to hear them.
We came here for dinner, which maybe was a mistake. It's probably a better place to grab a pint and snack on some bar food. The atmosphere is fun. It has that dark, London pub feel with an old-fashioned British phone booth on the outside. And the beer selection? Pretty decent. A good selection on tap, and other bottled varieties, including ciders. I like that they do $5 American pints (16 oz) or $6 British pints (20 oz) for the beer on tap.
The food here, though, is hit or miss. The menu is probably a little too ambitious. I was happy with the shepherd's pie that I ordered--but I don't think anybody else enjoyed their food. The Kobe beef sliders were nothing special. And neither the chicken curry or the lamb dish were big hits.
My dad later commented that, "I ordered the curry because I thought no one could mess up curry."
The bottom line: Come for the beer. (or else stick to traditional British pub food when you order)
Been craving Fish & Chips since we went to Mendocino back in September and had some of the best F&C! Â Went to another local place and was sorely disappointed. Â Yelped for F&C and this place came up highly recommended.
First off, the atmosphere. Â Very down to earth and comfortable place to be. Â A lot of families and older folks there as well as younger couples. Â Definitely not a young 'hipster' type of place.
Walked in and was promptly seated at several different tables. Â The wife is quite picky. Â The owner(?) overheard my wife saying wanting to be warm (it was 38 degrees out) so he sat on the side of the fireplace. Â Just as we sat down, another table opened up that was right in front of the fireplace. Â So he offered that table to us, quickly cleaned it off and seated us there! Â THANKS!!!
The waitress (also one of the bartenders) came over and quickly asked about drinks. Â At first, I wasn't sure what I wanted since this was our first time, so she gave us a few and came back to check up on us. Â NICE! Â We let her know we were going to have the fish & chips and she gave us some very nice suggestions for a beer to go along with it. Â Wound up going with the Great White. Â Excellent choice. Â She even gave us a generous sample taste before we ordered it. Â
We ordered crab cakes for an appetizer. Â The sauce was nice and spicy-just the way I like it. Â The crab cakes were also very, very good. Â Possibly the best I've had.
The fish & chips are great! Â You get one very large, very hot, steaming piece of fish with an EXCELLENT light batter. Â The sauce they give you is also very good and goes great with it. Â The french fries are nice and crispy too. Â The portions are very good too. Â Although it didn't look like I would be full from it, I was forcing myself to finish since it was so good. Â
Finished off with the apple crumb(?) pie and vanilla ice cream. Â AWESOME!
This is a great place to come to hang out and enjoy each others company. Â The food is top notch and the service is very friendly.
At the end of the night, I walked up to the owner and thanked him for being so accommodating to my wife and he said that if we call ahead, they can reserve a specific table for us! Â SWEET!!!
Definitely coming back!
John
Great food but sketchy service. Although it wasn't my direct experience, the horrific treatment of the people at the table next to us has to be taken note of. They were seated in the sidewalk patio area next to us, and that was about it. 20 minutes later the poor guy couldn't even get a beer, and kept asking us how ours was. Terrible!! Finally he gets pissed (and rightly so) and goes inside to tell them to come out and take his order. So the girl says ok, and then another 20 minutes later...nothing! Too bad, he was actually a really cool (and amazingly patient) guy too. Finally he grabbed his wife and kid and hit the road. Never even got a glass of water or anything. Sad!!!
Our own experience was good up until the point that our waiter apparently went home or went on break (or maybe was abducted by aliens). The same ditzy bimbo became our server too, who basically made our dining experience grind to a screeching halt. Couldn't even get our check when we wanted to leave. No manager in sight and the place only had 3 tables of customers, so go figure. On a time-pressed road trip this is not cool, and we definitely needed to get on the road. Total time lost from her stupidity...easily 30 minutes.
Other than that, our initial service was excellent, the atmosphere is absolutely perfect, with a nice breeze, some shade, and a great street-level view of the cars idling by on this main drag. Boddington's beer made for a fantastic opener to an amazing lamb hot pot, and our waiter was very spot on with everything.
I hope to return here some time and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the service will be good. Even halfway decent would be more than good enough but the nightmare experience this last time was completely unacceptable. The worst part is it took place without even a shrug of concern from the lameass waitress.
This is my kind of dance club.
Clearly, this isn't a dance club... and that's pretty much my point. Â I enjoyed the food the couple of times I ate here and I went in a couple times for the DJ on Saturday nights and danced. Â I like that it's not super crowded, and the DJ they have plays a pretty good mix of some current music and some old favorites. Â And it's not pumping techno and I don't have to squeeze my ass through a sea of people to get to my friends.
As well, I LOVE that they still have all the seats and such available after dinner service during the dancing so I can easily still have a home base for my coat, drink, and take a breather when I don't feel like dancing.
As for the food, because that's probably why most of you are going there... it was solid. Â Good quality, impressive portions, fair prices. Â I've had the fish & chips... and let me tell you, if you're expecting a few fish portions you're going to be surprised. Â It was one gigantic fish fillet battered deliciously... literally about 3" wide at it's widest and 9-10" long. Â Huge and delicious.
I like the clientele, pretty low key, and I never had any issues with the bartenders knowing what to recommend or knowing how to make a drink I ordered (which happens more than I'd like when trying to order some drinks I used to think were pretty common). Â
The biggest downside of this place for me is that it's in Danville... and I live in San Leandro... I'd pretty much have to get someone else to drive me to really have some drinks & have a good time because that long of a cab ride is out of the question :)
This review is for dinner. But, as a side note, I've come here just for drinks after hitting up some of the other bars, and its been great, with strong drinks. However...
Came here for dinner... we got seated outside, and it was probably 10 minutes or so before someone greeted us and gave us menus. After that, took our waitress forever to come back again. The service was just reallyyy slow the whole time. Also, when they were bringing my food, the girl hit my beer with the plate and spilled some of it!!! Personally, I think that is a big deal. You don't just spill someone's beer!! She said sorry, but still... would have liked another beer or something... hah. I dunno, after the slow service, the spilt beer just kind of bothered me.
The food... I ordered the fish and chips. It did hit the spot. The fries weren't too good, but the fish was cooked perfectly.
I would come back here again if I was craving British pub type food. I just hope the service is a little better next time.
The servers at The Crown are in desperate need of some beer knowledge!! Training here is sorely needed. More on that in a second...
We decided to have lunch here on a lazy Sunday afternoon based on the specials menu and the nice patio out front, and I have to say that the food was actually pretty good overall. I had the Sunday Steak Pie special, which was great, and my wife had the fish and chips, which she said were good, but not the best she ever had. We did have to wait over 45 minutes to get our food though since our server "forgot" to put in the order with the kitchen
More problems began soon after... I originally ordered a Great White draft (which is a witbier, an unfiltered beer, served "cloudy") Our female server brought it out, no problem, I enjoyed it and wanted more :-)
Then Sam the waiter/manager came out and took over our table. I ordered another Great White.... When he brought it out, I noticed it was clear, not cloudy, not unfiltered. I asked him if he brought the wrong thing, he puffs up his chest and says "I don't know what SHE poured you, but no, I poured this one myself" and runs off. So, I try the 2nd beer, and it's nothing like the first one at all, it looks and tastes more like a Pyramid Curve Ball. Not a witbier at all, that one...a distinctly different style...
I ask again "Are you sure? This is supposed to be cloudy and tastes different from the first one." Sam stares at me for a minute and says "I have no idea, I really couldn't tell you, but that's what you ordered" and bails out.
Honestly, I think they had their tap lines from the kegs crossed up, but the fact remains that poor Sam doesn't know much about beer or bartending, or he would have gone and tried the two beers side by side himself, checking the kegs, etc, instead of giving up and disappointing a customer. It didn't seem that Sam had ever even HAD a Great White, else he would have noticed the mix-up just by the cloudiness (or lack of).... It's really not good for somebody working in a bar to not be familiar with what they pour.
We ended up leaving and going to another spot to get my Great White.
Wow! This place really reminds me of an old English pub/restaurant in some little town straight out of England...Lol
After a long day in the office, my friend/coworker decided to grab a quick bite to eat before meeting up with some clients. This was the closest and the only place with parking so we decided to drop in.
Really the interior of this place reminds me of some old English restaurant on the outskirts of London. Upon entering, I literally felt like I stepped into some hole in the wall restaurant, somewhere in England all full of locals, laughing and reminiscing over hearty food and beer. Certainly nothing fancy, straight up a local neighborhood joint, that I would say serves up just some average hearty food, which after a few beers, I am sure tastes phenomenal!
The service was upbeat and friendly. I ordered there Maui Chicken- Which is grilled chicken, sautéed vegetable and rice, dressed in a sweet pineapple sauce- I opted for no rice-just veggies. My friend ordered there Salmon Caesar salad.
Upon arrival of our dishes, I was immediately disappointed with the lack of chicken-which visually looked to me more like a lean cuisine meal- I will say the Flavor was fantastic, The vegetables were cooked perfectly, but really the lack of chicken was sad and far from my expectations.
My friend's salad looked like an average Caesar salad, nothing special- I took a bite and yes salmon was good, but again nothing special.
Overall, we were starving and it hit the spot. Flavor wise it was satisfying, however the skimpy chicken was a major disappointment, in a hearty place like this you would think they would have heartier portions, who knows maybe it was just my dish- the prices are not bad, so I guess you can say you get what you pay for. They do have an interesting menu selection and I would say there worth giving another shot.
I've only had appetizers and drinks here in the past. Â However, some friends wanted to get together for dinner to finalize our plans for our hiking trip to Half Dome next month and choose The Crown.
I was initially disappointed that although we had a reservation, we weren't seated right away and when we were, all 5 of us were crammed into a space intended for 4 adults. Â They offered us outside seating, but it was a little too chilly last night for that.
However, after serving us our drinks, a large booth nearby opened up and they immediately offered to move us over to it and we gladly accepted. Â That won them back some stars :-)
A couple of us ordered the fish & chips - which were very good. Â One person ordered the shepherd's pie, which he practically inhaled - LOL! Â
The other two people in our group ordered sandwiches and said they were good.
Parking in downtown Danville can sometimes be frustrating, but it was fine last night.  I got there a little early and took advantage  of a 50% off sale at Sauvignon :-)
If you've read any other reviews, I've just moved to Danville. Â Me and my friends took a friend from Albany out to lunch here today. Â We haven't been to any of the other restaurants in downtown yet.. however, this place had us at "Shephard's Pie"!!
We were quickly seated inside, since it was a little chilly outside today.
Our drinks / beers were delivered quickly -- along with our food.
The service was appropriate -- relaxed but on target.
We had Shephard's Pie and Fish & Chips. Â We also has the Baked Apple Crumble for dessert -- which was DELICIOUS!!
Definitely coming back to try more of the menu!! Â YUM!!
This is our new favorite local restaurant. Â We eat here at least once a week, and are never disappointed. Â If you like Fish and Chips, you will love them from here.
The food is always good, no matter what we order, and the service is always pleasant. Â We have even had the pleasure of getting to know the owners, Sam and Sally, and they are very nice people. Â If you are looking for some really good English Pub food, and a nice atmosphere, this is the place you want to try.
I had the unfortunate experience of eating here this evening. This is now the 5th and final time I will ever step foot in this restaurant since not only have I always had less than impressive food, the service has gone downhill.
Without my usual stories behind why I was here, this is the lowdown of why I will not be back.
The place was not very busy...so, here it goes:
1. Hostess (probably her first summer job) offers to seat us inside or out. There were 3 of us and the tables outside available were for 2. Upon being seated I watched her stand at her "station". Then I watched her play with her hair, walk around, fiddle with her too tight skirt, fix her hair some more and then she finally took a seat behind her "station". She then takes both hands and puts them through her hair, shakes it and kind of flips it. She plays with her nails, and the best tonight folks...she takes off one of her shoes and plays with it touching the bottom to see that it has come undone from the base. All the while I am thinking this is who touched my menu, my silver set up and who knows what else.
2. The ONLY thing decent here is the fish and chips. Unfortunately, I cannot eat this much fried food right now so I peruse the menu and decide upon a "harmless" burger. I ordered veggies instead of fries, making sure no mayo or anything like it would be on my plate. I received a well done patty on a bun with the tomato, pickle, onion and browned wilted lettuce. To top it off, the lettuce also had a big splooge of some kind of jiz. I mean, it was probably tarter sauce or something, but man, if I wasn't already disgusted at the school lunch type burger served, the rest of it did me in.
I did not eat the burger but I did eat the veggies. I waited and waited for the waitress to come back. She did-after the rest of my party was done eating. She asked if I wanted a box. I showed her the burger and lettuce spooge/set-up. I asked her to charge for the veggies but to take the rest off the bill. She apologized...barely.
I have yet to see a manager type person walk around this place. I have yet to have a good quality waitress. I have no need to ever give my money to this type of place and I swear, if any of you own or work in a restaurant, please tell me you don't allow your employees to play with their hair/shoes in front of customers!
Why people expect the food to be amazing I have no clue. It's a British pub and restaurant which translates to great beer on tap and so-so greasy comfort food. The service staff are always pleasant and happy to talk you into adding mushy peas and/or bubble and squeak to your order. I've never gotten a bellyache from the food, only from too much cider and laughing too hard.
Best to come with a gang of pals for some catch up time over fish, chips, and pints.
Cheers!
Seems like a good place to meet friends and hang out. We went on a Friday night the wait was pretty long due to the families that were eating there (we showed up at 7 and waited about 40 minutes) but by the time we were seated all the kids were about cleared out and it turned into a proper pub atmosphere. Â
The food was good, three of the four of us had the fish and chips, and everyone liked it. I had the Maui chicken, which was good. We also had an appetizer of fried shrimp, also good.
To be completely forthcoming, I worked here for about 8 months after graduating college. It was a fun job, made some nice cash, bettered my public speaking skills, etc. They used to give us one meal a day for working 2 back to back shifts, so being the diligent worker I was, I worked many back to back shifts and tried just about everything on the menu.
Things on the menu I'd recommend:
1. Fish and Chips (Great deal, always fresh, batter is not too heavy, cooks in the back have got this down to a science.)
2. Shrimp Sandwich (On the lighter side, good bread, shrimp salad is made fresh)
3. Pork Chop (Pricey, but flavorful, best "entree" dinner meal on the menu if you're not digging the fish and chips)
4. Shepard's Pie (Mashed, warm, and comforting)
And that's about it. The appetizers are all pretty decent - pretty standard bar food there. To give you some insight, the kitchen in the back is very clean and there were never any health issues/problems we had to deal with, ever. So no worries there.
Servers I worked with were pretty cool, mostly just kids looking to make some cash for school. Ownership has stayed within the same family but still has changed a bit within that family - no longer do I see my favorite friendly English couple behind the bar, but instead....other folks I didn't really care working for too much.
Surpassing the food and the service by far is the beer selection here. When the beer reps came in, I was able to help taste and select some of the beers, which was one of the best perks of the job. You can expect to see at least a couple of the following on tap at all times here: Carlsberg, Boddy's, London Pride, Stella, Guinness, a good Porter, and a decent ale.
They have bands here that play on the weekends, some are entertaining, mostly geared towards the 'burb drunk desperate housewife cougar crowd. And boy, do they get down.
For drinking only, I'd definitely recommend over Meenar's (which reminds me of a "classy" bar in Reno) or Norm's (like drinking in your living room maybe 15 years ago but with not as comfortable furniture). Toss up between here and Elliott's...drinks are way cheap at Elliott's, bar is way cool, and they've got shuffleboard on the nights they aren't being crowded out by barley legal danville kids home for Thanksgiving break. The Crown is indeed, an excellent place to catch a football game (the European kind) and during World Cup they'll be open when the game is on live, even if that means a 3AM showing.
My last word of advice when coming here, is if you're thinking about stopping by during 4th of July weekend, please don't. It's so packed there is usually a line outside 50 deep, and a lot of the servers know this and either quit or take a last minute vacation beforehand. If you really expect to get great or even decent service on a holiday weekend where you can see bodies spilling out of the joint, well, you're just walking into your own fire. I tried to serve 6 pina coladas and some drunk kid bumped into me, causing me to spill them...all over myself right in front of my table. It wasn't pretty, how I looked, or what I said to that kid...in front of my table.
I would like to give this place four stars, but I think three is all I can do for now. Â I've only been here a couple times, once over a year ago and once very recently. Â First time just had drinks, this time dinner too.
It was very bright when we first arrived about 8:30 p.m., but the lights dimmed about an hour later, which seemed more appropriate. Â The inside is kinda cool. Â I was in London for two days, about eight years ago, and never went to any pubs (I was with my mom), so I don't have much to compare it to. Â But this is a favorite place of a former co-worker of mine who happens to be a Brit.
I like the big wooden booths, lots of room to spread out. I like the looks of the bar, too. Â The service was just OK. Â Attentive at first, then got worse as the meal progressed. Â We didn't receive our requested waters until halfway through our meal -- about a half hour after we asked for them. Â By the time we were trying to pay the check, the server walked past our table multiple times (to help the table right next to us) and never glanced our way. Â Another server/bus-boy-type was taking the other plates from our table when I was clearly still eating (had food in my hand and left on the plate), yet still motioned to me to ask if I was done. Â Uh, no ... ?
Four of us shared a pitcher of Boddington's, which was enough for four glasses at $19. Â Not too bad of a deal. Â Three of us got fish and chips, which comes as one large piece of fried fish instead of individually fried ones -- so you eat with a fork and knife instead of your fingers. Â The fish was fine, the fries (sorry, chips) were fine, but nothing spectacular. Â The fourth person ordered a turkey burger and said it was pretty good.
Brett L. is right about the cougars ... the two sleaziest dressed women in this place looked to be in their mid-40s.
I like the concept of this place, they even have a cool red telephone booth out front. But it's the execution that seems to have some issues.
I went here with friends and although the service was fine, the food was less than memorable. Â My burger was okay, but the fries served with it tasted like they had been fried in vinegar (if that's even possible). Â The interior of the restaurant is just a little too bland to convey a nice atmosphere.
I don't think I would go back.
This is a true British Pub in the sense of Brittania Arms in San Jose. Â If you've come to drink and eat hearty food then this is a great place. Â If you've come for fine dining, the place is just to busy to serve you well.
Some of the dishes are hit or miss.  Avoid the India colonial style food like the Chicken Tikka & Tomato, tasted dried out and chewy  (guess this is the modern realities of British food), but old English classics like Shephard's Pie with Mushies were fantastic.
If you've never been to Danville it is worth pulling off 680 and checking it out.
OMG - The WORSE service I have ever received. My husband and I took a couple of friends there on July 3rd and either they were short-staffed or slow in the kitchen. Nevertheless, it was a 2 hour dinner for some fried food!!!
At first I thought it was just our table, but tables around us waited over 15 minutes to just order. One table clapped their hands and said 'Hurray, our food is here!"
I expected the servers and staff to be more apologetic of the service and at least warn the patrons of the delay, but nothing of that matter ever happened.
The food was okay and it was crowded for the Daily Specials...can't beat Fish & Chips for $6. I had the Layla Chicken Sandwich, meat was too dry and the chicken was only on half of the sandwich roll.
Maybe I should try it on a non-holiday night, but I will not come here hungry or expecting great service.
I just moved to Danville after having spent 2 years in Leeds, England. Â These guys did a great job of recreating (in a distinctly NorCal way) the look and feel of the hearty old English pub. Â I'm just happy it's not another cheeeeezy Irish pub knockoff. Â They've got some great bitters on tap and thankfully serve them colder than they do in the motherland. Â The food is good - but that's not what brings me back. Â I love the fact that these folks serve beer in "Imperial Pint" glasses - that's a true British pint for you - bigger, heartier and more thirst-quenching.
Word of warning: watch out for the cougars here on weekend nights - they are on the prowl for young male flesh as my brother unfortunately(?) discovered.
Good Upscale Pub. Â
This place is an attempt to recreate an old English Pub in downtown Danville. Â It doesn't quite fit, but that's ok. Â The beer selection is good and the food was really good. Â To start off with, we had some onion rings and fried shrimp. Â Yeah, they were both really good. Â Then for the main course, we had a blue cheese and mushroom burger and a traditional fish and chips. Â Both were good pub grub. Â
Parking is pretty easy in downtown Danville you just have to know to park in back. Â The service was prompt and helpful. Â Even though they were busy, we never felt ignored. Â The only knock on The Crown is it is a tad more than other places. Â Dinner and one drink a piece came out to about $20 a person. Â Still, that's not bad. Â If you are in the area, I recommend a visit.
