Okay, I've gone back a couple of times now, and I don't even care where the naan comes from--it's good enough, the garlic version turns out to be quite tasty, and the flavor of everything else more than makes up for the modest naan to warrant the full five stars. The beet salad was delicious, a light voluminous tangle of delicate threaded beets and apples, a subtle citrusy dressing, and generous in portion (two of us shared it and each had a satisfying pile of it.) Our omnivorous friend, a picky eater and Indian-food snob, ordered a chicken special and was blown away. I can't stop going back for that damn dal. And the sweet chef comes out to say hello, which is flat-out charming. Really one of the most consistently interesting and delicious places in town.
Review Source:This is simply an amazing restaurant. Â The food is mind-blowingly flavorful, and when they say hot they mean it! Â The chef does just the right amount of creative innovation on top of a solid base of regional Indian food. Â The atmosphere is goof and the location can't be beat. Â Bottom line: Â If you like intense creative flavors, you need to try Curry Craft. Â Also they have a great vegetarian selection.
Review Source:The food was very enjoyable. Â The atmosphere was good. Â The service a bit slow - the food took a bit of time to get there... However, the vegetarian dishes were GREAT! Â And the chicken dishes were VERY tasty. Â They were flavorful and spicy. Â
I would recommend this place if you have a little time to sit and enjoy. Â The food is definitely worth the wait.
We recently relocated to Richmond from Dallas and have been really disappointed in the Indian food here, especially having enjoyed the cuisine all over the world.  However, we recently visited Curry Craft on Cary Street for dinner and found it to be an exceptional surprise!  The starters we sampled were:  Salad (which included Greens, Apples, Chutney Marinated Celery, Beet Threads, Dates, Homemade Vinaigrette) and was a creation of perfection, as well as the smoothTomato-Coconut soup.  We ordered a main dish of Paneer Makhni  (a large portion perfect for sharing) and it was AMAZING.  Don't miss the mushroom-goat cheese Naan bread. The service was spot on and the atmosphere is very nice.  Chef Mel Oza sent our table a sample of his newest creation and stopped by to check-out our feedback.  The wine list is limited, but reasonably priced with decent selections.  Give it a try!
Review Source:3.5 stars!
I came here on a whim after enjoying a delightful movie at the Byrd Theater. At first I was a little hesitant on trying this place since I had my heart set on something else, but I'm glad I did! Â
Upon entering, we were greeted and offered to sit at a place of our choice. The water was immediately filled and menus placed in front of us. The dinner menu had a good selection without having too many options, which might have been a tad overwhelming. We ordered the pan seared scallops, as appetizers, and the lamb vin d' alho, as an entree. The appetizer was good, but disappointing due to the small portion and the price that it cost. However, the entree made up for what the appetizer lacked. The lamb vin d' alho paired with the garlic naan was a fair amount for 2 people. The entree was one of the more spicier choices that left your throat tingling, but nothing that will make you gulp down gallons of water. It really hit the spot, making this experience more enjoyable.
I loved the atmosphere of this place; the interior design was very pleasing to the eye as well. The service was great. The only downside is the pricing is a bit more than I had anticipated walking in. However, I'd still love to come here again and try something else on the menu!
We went last night and I thought everything was fantastic. Â Our wait staff was fast and attentive with drinks, cleaned our dirty plates fast, and packaged our leftovers for us. Â Food was soo good, the Malai Palak-Chenna and Mushroom-Goat Cheese Naan were my favorite. Â The owner even came out and asked us if everything was ok, and thanked us for coming in. Â Love this place
Review Source:I've recently found myself craving Indian food quite often, so I was extremely excited about the opening of this new spot in Carytown. As of my visit last Friday, it had only been open about two weeks. The ABC license is also currently pending (which we knew going into our dinner, so there was no surprise there), and I'm sure the restaurant is working through the usual kinks that accompany a new opening. I was bummed when bonvenu closed, so I'm hoping for an awesome replacement. That said, my experience was A-OK - not amazing, but certainly not bad.
I started with the salad, which was fantastic and the highlight of my meal. It featured greens, apples, chutney marinated celery, beet threads, dates and a homemade vinaigrette, which resulted in an intriguing combination of flavors. And the dressing was light, while still maintaining a great deal of flavor. The bf ordered naan, and although I didn't try it, he was a fan. For my entree I went with the paneer asparagus kurma: Southern Indian style kurma, sauteed asparagus and cashews in a coconut curry sauce. While the coconut curry was tasty, I was left wishing for more asparagus and spice. The bf ordered the special, which was lump crab in a tomato-based sauce, and I was impressed with the amount of crab in his dish. I totally had dish envy.
Our server was friendly, but a bit slow despite the fact that the restaurant wasn't packed. She never asked us if we wanted any beverages aside from water (which, in fact, I did. And I ordered a chai halfway through the meal) and we waited quite a while once we finished our food to receive our check. Not the biggest deal, and certainly not something that would keep me from returning, but worth noting. I would definitely give this place another try once they've been open a little longer. I look forward to seeing what they do once they're a little more established.
Was excited to try another Indian restaurant closer to the city.
The space is nice, not too fancy.
Entree prices I think are about 3-4 dollars more than your average Indian restaurant and not increased in quality.
Tried paneer makhni which was ok, sauce was a tad off for me but may be personal taste.
The chicken curry with pineapple was again ok. I was hoping to have a different taste with the pineapple but it wasn't necessarily. The chicken could also be slightly more tender. Also the chef initially forgot the pineapple and when called to attention did offer to either add it or give new dish and comped a dessert due to this mistake which I appreciated. I think it would be nice to offer to change spice levels too.
Good, not great. They are new so could potentially improve more. Given prices, would more likely go to Lemon for Indian food.
