As much as I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the food, the service has been bad. There was one time I showed up at 11:15am and the door was locked. A minute later, some guy showed up, said he over slept, and it would be a half hour before he could cook something. Unfortunately, I was pressed for time that Saturday volunteering for a nonprofit and needed to get back. I haven't been to Ted's since because I didn't want to experience that again. :/
Review Source:My wife Kristy K grew up in Pennsylvania as an avid Philly cheesesteak fanatic. Â Over the years of visiting her at Penn State and her family in PA over holidays, I too became a lover of the meaty-cheesy goodness that is an authentic Philly cheesesteak. Â Eating Philly cheesesteaks became a ritual for any visit to PA.
At first, I never bought the hype that you could not get a good Philly cheesesteak outside of the Philly area. Â To me, it sounded like more of the same self-absorbed and snobby delusions of grandeur that you hear from New Yorkers claiming that you can't get a good slice of pizza outside of the NY boroughs. Â How hard could it really be to put steak, onions, hot peppers, and cheese on a sandwich? Â However, as I searched for good cheesesteaks in numerous major cities outside of PA, I was consistently left underwhelmed and disappointed. Â Apparently, a great cheesesteak outside of PA is more elusive than you might think. Â By the time that I had moved out west to Denver last year, I had pretty much given up hope on finding a great, authentic cheesesteak outside of the Philly area. Â
But then Denver Ted's came along and, to my delight, blew up the old myth about Philadelphia's monopoly on good cheesesteaks. Â Denver Ted's cheesesteaks are nearly identical to the cheesesteaks from my favorite cheesesteak joint in Kristy's hometown. Â My typical Philly cheesesteak order is steak, onions, and hot pepper relish "wit Whiz." Â I realize that the idea of processed Cheese Whiz on a sandwich probably sounds odd to an outsider, but there is just something about Whiz that goes wonderfully on a cheesesteak. Â You can also get the cheesesteaks with American or Provolone, but for some reason it is just never quite the same to me that way (perhaps because my first cheesesteak in Philly was with Whiz). Â The buns at Denver Ted's are shipped in from the Amoroso Bakery in Philly and have a delightful texture of outer crunchiness and inner chewiness to them. Â The steak is sliced thin and cooked on a big flat top griddle, just as it is at any authentic joint in Philly. Â The steak is always very flavorful and juicy. Â The caramelIzed onions and hot pepper relish are great additions to the cheesesteak for flavor. Â I think the hot pepper relish is a frequently overlooked ingredient by most people, but it adds a great spiciness to the sandwich. Â If you want some extra spice, ask them to mix the hot pepper relish in with your steak while it cooks. Â My wife and I pretty much go into full-blown animal mode when we eat at Denver Ted's -- rarely speaking as we devour our cheesesteaks, except for perhaps occasional primal moans of satisfaction. Â My only complaint about Denver Ted's cheesesteaks is that I sometimes wish they did a better job mixing the cheese in throughout all of the fillings (as it occasionnally seems like the cheese is just placed on the bottom of the bun). Â Overall, I couldn't be happier to have found delicious, authentic Philly cheesesteaks in Denver.
The fries are also quite tasty at Denver Ted's. Â If we ever get cheesesteaks to go, the fries are always gone by the time we actually get home. Â They also have chocolate-covered, peanut butter rice krispie treats, which they advertise as "the best rice krispie treats in the world." Â It sounded like a pretty bold claim at first, but then again these are the guys that shattered my longstanding beliefs about cheesesteaks. Â The World's Greatest Rice Krispie Treat did not disappoint, as it was certainly the best rice krispie I've ever had. Â If you are ever having a total diet "cheat day" where calorie counting no longer exists, it's tough to beat a cheesesteak, fries, and a chocolate peanut butter rice krispie treat for the ultimate guilty pleasure meal. Â
Denver Ted, thank you for bringing the best of Philly out west to Denver (and for giving me one less reason to visit the in-laws in Pennsylvania).
.....huh what!?! Sorry was mid review when i entered a cheesesteak-oma. Â (the suspended nervous system , not the state South of Springfield and Shelbyville).
Denver TEDS has easily become my go to cheese steak place. Â If you need to distract yourself from the meat sweats, then concentrate on your game of Sorry, that's built into every table....because your friend is cheating, they always are.
We had lunch here for the first time this summer using a Voice Daily Deals coupon. Â Parking was a little difficult on Pearl Street, but I guess that is to be expected. Â They were working on the A/C unit so it was really hot. Â We ordered at the counter.
The cheesesteak was huge with lots of meat and cheese. Â The fries were good too. Â We will be back.
Pretty tasty cheese steak. I usually get your standard pepper and onion, and it always hits the spot. The sandwiches are huge, but if it's noon on Saturday and you just woke up from boozing all night, this will really make your morning/afternoon survivable.
Quick service, affordable, and nice staff making this a great Cap Hill spot (whether you're hungover or not!).
Once again, God bless smartphones for quickly identifying cheesesteaks in Denver & then getting us to Ted's after an afternoon of chai tea & books at Tattered Cover.
Ted's is a small place with a huge taste - the cheesesteaks are simply prepared so if you think excess makes the meal, you'd best look elsewhere, although you'd be missing out for doing so.
Don't forget to get an order of their tasty fries too!
I came here about 2 months ago with a friend from out of town...but, I was too hungover to eat. He kept telling me that I needed to go back and try it and that it's "comparable to Pat's or Geno's in Philly". Â Well, I decided to try it out tonight.
I'm sitting here eating my "Chad" cheesesteak (jalapenos, Cheese Whiz, no onions for me, and I added American cheese)...and all I can say is "DAMN". It is the best cheese steak I've had in a long time (since I've been back east, really). It's not too messy, perfect amount of cheese, the jalapenos are actually a little spicy (which I love), and there isn't an excess of fat on the meat. Perfection. My only complaint (and it isn't even a big issue) is that the bread is a little chewy...but, it is the end of the night for them, so I understand (I went in at 6:30 and they close at 7:00). All in all, I am quite satisfied, and impressed, with the food.
Also, the service was spectacular. I know how some employees can get a little moody at the last half-hour of opening. But, not these guys! The guy that took my order even asked me if I was going to eat in or take it home. What a sweet gesture! I work in a restaurant, so I know how it feels to have people sitting and eating while you are trying to close-up shop, so I took it home. But, it was nice of him to ask me, anyways - I felt welcome and I didn't feel rushed, whatsoever.
.....I'm still finishing the first half of my cheesesteak and I'm already upset that I only have one more half to go. I will definitely be going back and spreading the word to everybody I know that doesn't know about this gem. Bravo for an awesome cheesesteak, guys! :-)
Came here this past weekend. Â Cheesesteaks are delish! Â Really like the bread. Â Pretty basic but very yummy. Â Would def come back. That said it is not baby friendly-- they didn't mind the bun being there, but there were no high chairs or baby changing station in the restroom. Â Luckily he behaved long enough for us to eat a yummy cheesesteak ! Â Def recommend.
Review Source:Minimal menu and a no frills interior, but what they do here, they do well. I think it's fair to say that these are easily the best cheesesteaks I've had in denver so far. Good bread and they offer cheez whiz. Not too expensive (under $20 for 2 cheesesteaks and 2 drinks). Â Not going to blow you away or anything, but it's difficult to blow people away with cheesesteaks to be fair. We would come back.
Review Source:What I had? Â Regular Cheesesteak (steak, american cheese, onions) and added peppers. Â Rice crispy treat (made with peanut butter??) topped with chocolate frosting)
Food review: Â Props to Boris B. for recommending this one. Â This cheesesteak was really tasty. Â It's making it hard to decide what my favorite is in town now. Â One thing that I liked about this cheesesteak was that it wasn't as messy as other cheesesteaks can get for me yet it wasn't dry either. Â It was just right. Â For dessert, they had one of my favorite lunch time snacks.. rice crispy treat topped with chocolate frosting. Â I'm really excited there's yet another place that serves these (only other 2 places I know of is Garbanzos and Erberts and Gerberts). Â It did not disappoint. Â Overall, a great experience and will certainly come back.
Service? Â No complaints
So.Good.
I LOVE cheesesteaks and this is by far one of the best I have had in Denver. Not only were the guys working really nice but damn it, the food was just GOOD. We had traditional cheesesteaks with provolone and peppers - but they added American by mistake and it was an awesome mistake! We will be getting them with both cheeses in the future.
Not a fancy restaurant by any means...divey/hole in the wall type scene but um, were talking cheesesteaks here so I sure as hell don't plan on dressing up.
Definitely recommend - took my best friend who has never had a cheesesteak (yea, I am not sure how that's possible either) and she is hooked! Wants to go once a week - my waistline cannot remotely afford that but maybe once a month :)
I guess my expanding waistline and living a block away from Denver Ted's are not coincidental. Â Damn. Â
But I just can't stay away from the chicken cheesesteak + whiz +peppers. Â And the bread that soaks up the gooey-ness? Â Ugh. Â And their 2 nine-inch cheesesteaks for $10 coupon I occasionally receive in the mail? Â Please stop for the sake of my health.
Like everyone else said, no one is going to go out of their way to make pleasantries and ask you about how your day is going. Â But they're not going to be rude either. Â Just kinda there, serving up some of the most delicious cheesesteaks in town. Â And that, I can appreciate.
People who know me well (or anyone who sits within earshot) know that I make sounds of happiness while I eat if something tastes good.
Moaning in Public
Before our food arrived, I did my usual thing - talking, talking, talking. After the food arrived, all you could hear was moans of happiness. Talking did not resume until the first half of my 12" was gone. My friend tried, I just ignored him, holding my pointer finger to my mouth in the universal symbol of 'shut the hell up.'
The Food
I ate a 12" Ryan - Peppers, mushrooms, onions, Cheez Whiz, and provolone.
My friend ate a 12" mushroom steak with American cheese, no onions (to the no onions thing...No, I don't know what the hell is wrong with him). ;-)
Add in an order of french fries and 2 drinks.
After trying both sandwiches - I would definitely go with the Ryan every time I go back. Thank god I don't live close to this place, because I'd be in trouble. I was having fantasies of a bed full of cooked meat and cheese, you know, something to lay down and roll around in. No, really, I'm not joking.
We stopped at DAM after eating here, but that was a secondary place to go. I went into Denver just to eat these. And it was totally worth it. Oh, and the museum was cool, too.
Cost
We paid $27 and change for our two large sandwiches, fries and fountain drinks, including a small tip.
Things got a little rowdy the night before, so I woke up craving grease. MMMM, just oozing, gooey, greasy fare, because nothing is quite so nurturing to what ails you. Â
Ted's does NOT disappoint.
I am actually typing in between bites of gooey, cheesy, meaty heaven so that I am true to the moment for this review. It is that good.
May I recommend the 12 inch pepper and mush, with whiz & pepper relish. If you go for it, get ready to have hot, wet love-making in your mouth, because it is probably one of the sexiest, nastiest, naughtiest flavor combos you have ever had. I can see where you could go junkie if you don't know how to handle your shite.
But alas girls, RESIST, or your butt & thighs will be paying the fatty price.
SOMETIMES though, a girl just gotta have her grease, and damn right, we love every bite!
How often do you get a job somewhere, simply because you want the free grub?? Â I did that at Teds back in 2005 and would still work there if I lived in Denver. Â I've never been to Philly, but Ted sure as hell has. Â And he brought to Denver the best damn cheesesteaks around! Â I go with the original 85% of the time, but the chicken cheese steak is killer too. Â Top that off with board games built into the tables, a prime location on the Hill, and top notch drinkeries within walking distance and you got yourself possibly the BEST grub in a town known for getting down in the kitchen!
It's not a classy joint, but you want to satisfy a craving, go to Teds!
Yum! I love that Denver Ted's does just one thing, and does it well. I don't hail from Philly, so I'll have to defer to the locals on authenticity. Ted's has definitely converted me to the joys of cheesesteakery. And the fries are really good, too. I second Kristy K.'s motion to use the fries to mop up any escaping cheesy steak juices.
Did I mention...yum!
As hole in the wall as it gets,  but Ted's has become a regular weekly stop for me..  DT's  cheese-steaks hit that spot when you want something maybe a little messy but really really good...  It satisfies....  and THAT is all that matters...
These guys do it right... Right around the corner at 13th and Pearl..
I don't know which I ate faster, my cheesesteak from Denver Ted's or my words from my last review about Pat's stating there was no such thing as a Philly Cheesesteak outside Philadelphia.  Denver Ted's definitely made me eat my words. Finally, I have  found the Philly Cheesesteak to satisfy my homesick cravings.  This is the real deal. These guys know how to make a killer cheesesteak.  I went two days in a row due to the fact that I now can't stay away (just discovered them four days ago). I will probably be back tomorrow.
After trying cheesesteaks in many major cities (Chicago, Atlanta, NYC) and being disappointed, I gave up on finding the real deal. I am always left disappointed, discouraged, and homesick. Â Denver Ted's was a game-changer. Â They know what it takes to make an authentic cheesesteak - from the crispy, yet chewy bread, caramelized onions, pepper relish, and whiz. Â They even had the cheesesteak juice. I get so giddy when I take a bite out of a Philly cheesesteak and watch the whiz and steak juice combo combine into the delicious grease that drips on my plate for later fry dipping. Â I am gross, I know. Â This place serves the real deal. Â No Philadelphia cheesesteak imposters here. Â I had so much whiz/meat juiciness on my plate that I was smiling from ear to ear. Â I also had to bring back my "Philly lean" to avoid the drip from staining my clothes (ahhhh heaven!).
I can't recommend this place more. Try it. It is fulfills my cheesesteak fantasies and will soon yours. Now, I just need to find some Amish girls to fulfill my Lancaster Amish pretzel cravings and my life will be complete. Â I love you, Denver Ted's.
I heart Denver Ted's and their cheesy meaty sandwiches. My mouth is watering now just thinking about it....
This place is on my block, and I must say, I eat here quite a bit. It's good for my soul, but not necessarily good for my health. I don't even need to verbalize my order anymore. The moment I walk in, the guy behind the counter yells, "Pepper cheesesteak, right?" and throws my sandwich meat on the grill.
They offer a 9" and a 12" sandwich. I always get the 9" and it is more than enough food. I rarely have room for fries, but that doesn't mean that I don't order them...
I totally agree with Kelly T. The hours kinda suck. They close at 7 during the week, 4 on Saturdays, and aren't even open on Sundays. But hey, if you're sandwiches are that good, Ted, I guess you can make the rules.
I never would have guessed that I would give any cheesesteak place a 5 star review, but WOW this place was delicious. Â The sub was cooked to perfection and the quaint little location added a little to the flava! Â Just writing this is beginning to make my mouth water for those tantalizing, delectible treats they have cooking up on the grills. Give me dat, dat sandwich!!
I will be back and I recommend anyone in the Cap hill area to hit this joint!
This place has turned me into a lover of the Philly Cheesesteak!
Not only is it in the cap hill hood, it is amazing! I never really enjoyed myself a PC sammich before, but these are the bees knees!
I went again, as the craving must be satisfied, last weekend and only ate about a third of my gigantic 'regular' sized PC, but I was quite thrilled to enjoy my leftovers the next day and devour the same exact sandwich! How did the texture magically maintain?
Yum yum, get you some!
"You have just experienced the David Lee Roth of cheese-steaks" reads the sign above the door.. Which is an excellent start as far as I'm concerned.
Once upon a time I lived down the street from this cheese-steak emporium and recently stopped in to get my grub on. I forgot how awesome these greasy meat and cheese loaded barbarians are. Oh and cheese whiz? Bing bang bong! Load it up.
I am not from Philadelphia. I've watched every episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but I think they keep the topic on drinking and craziness, not cheesesteaks. I am however from Wisconsin and I like cheese...lots and lots of cheese.
Denver Ted's has my heart when it comes to cheesesteaks. And the cheeze whiz? Oh heck yeah! It would have never crossed my mind to use whiz on a sandwich but it's so freaking good!
Finally, even at a greasy diner, there is something really satisfying about seeing your food prepared. Love this place.
cheeze whiz on a philly?  YEAAAAAHHHH Buddy!  I ate here twice in one  day.  Shut your mouth cholesterol!
I was just introduced to this wonderful little hole in the wall a few days ago and I crave that gooey whiz dripping out of my sandwich and the happiness it brings to my belly. Â
I've had a lot of cheese steaks, and this is pretty much one of the best.
O how I love thee, CHAD!
I'll tell you this, it will give you some gas after. Â Inappropriate? Â I think not.
ENJOY!
Best f'ing cheesesteak in Denver...if not the world. Â Disagree? Â You're wrong. Â Don't like the guys behind the counter? Â Met one of the dudes at a bar and he was cool, so shut your mouth. Â Think the hours suck? Â Well, yeah, we're in agreement there.
As the handwritten sign above the exit says "You've just experienced the David Lee Roth of cheesesteaks."
Before I eat a Denver Ted's philly cheesesteak, I have a ritual. It involves spreading a layer of napkins two deep on the table in front of me to cover about two square feet. The cheesy, messy sammuch is a staple in my diet. Which is probably not a super healthy thing, but I don't give a damn.
I literally crave their sammuches from time to time.
Each cheesesteak is made right then and there, when you order it and the dudes who work there are pretty cool and work quickly.
You'll notice there's a star missing on this review. That's for their hours. Their hours freaking suck. 11-7 Monday through Saturday pretty much ensures I never have them for dinner. Or on Sundays, when it would be the most perfect cure for a hangover ever invented. They are solely a lunch or early dinner place.
But seriously, if you eat here, get ready to get addicted to melted cheese grilled with delicious, delicious steak melted onto soft, tasty bready.
Alright Philadelphians, what is up with the obsession over cheesesteaks? Â The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Philly is the Italian Stallion. Â The second thing is that brilliant television show with Danny Devito. Â The third, is cheesesteaks. Â I don't get the allure of the cheesesteak. Â Granted, I have never stepped foot in Philly, so I can't possibly speak to the wonders of "the real thing", but I have tasted imitation products in the past and can't say that it is something that I see having a ton of potential. Â
Before going to Denver Ted's, my last cheesesteak was obtained at a gas station restaurant in Sacramento over 5 years ago. Â It sucked. Â Ted's cheesesteak is head and shoulders a better experience. Â I got the Chad, a combination of their thinly sliced steak, sauteed with peppers and mushrooms, served with jalapenos and the infamous whiz. Â There is nothing remarkable about whiz - it is mass produced and shipped around the country in industrial sized cans. Â It has a flavor that resembles American cheese and a texture that says "I don't want to know what is in the ingredient list." Â
The sandwich is a mess to eat. Â Held lengthwise so that the bulging mound of meat is smiling back at you, the backside drips with a steady stream of neon orange whiz-oil mixture. Â The bread is soft and spongy, but subtantial enough to prevent the structure of the sandwich from collapsing under the heavy weight of meat, whiz, and oil. Â I must say that consuming a whole nine-inch hoagie was not one of my prouder moments. Â I waddled away praying I wouldn't suffer a heart attack while crossing Colfax Ave. Â
Despite my negativity, I still have to give this place three-stars. Â Just because I don't like a certain type of food doesn't mean that its not a-okay. Â Plus, they have a nice hole-in-the-wall space complete with the board game Sorry built into the tables.
I found it! Â My new favorite place for philly cheesesteaks in Denver! Â Thanks Yelpers!! Â Not much more to say that hasn't already been said, but to reiterate....delicious, perfectly cooked/seasoned beef, soft (but not too soft) bread, gooey yummy cheese whiz....yummmmmmmmmmm. Â And their fries are pretty fantastic as well...nice and crispy, just how I like 'em. Â
I was also amazed at the price: $6 for a 9 in, and $8.50 for a 12 in! Â Side of fries, only $1.85 (and it's a pretty big side). Â They also have bottles of Miller High Life (yes, the champagne of beers) and PBR for $2, and Newcastle for $3! Â Hard to beat that!
In conclusion, if you have yet to experience the joy that is a meal from Denver Ted's, get off your toucus and head there ASAP.
Thanks Yelpers for pointing me to another personal favorite. Gotta love this place its not hyped up inst over the top with psuedo trendy decor its a small indpendant business!
You walk right in and the grill is right there, in your face. You instantly see a cheesesteak and you know your in for a treat! I order a 12" which even for my Big Boy arse was pushing it! Hey more power to ya if you like the rooms and green peppers and all that. I am however a purist when it comes to some things like chessesteaks etc. Give it to me old school classic style  "a steak wit" thats a cheese steak with onions and cheese wiz!
Sometimes you can do simple things so well that they really become something bigger then the simplicity that they are and this in one of those places that does that!
You know it's an authentic cheesesteak when you notice grease dripping from the tray as you take the sandwich back to your table. Â This is also the only cheesesteak place in Denver I've been to that offers Cheez Whiz, just like in Philly. Â I like mine with mushrooms or green bell peppers, but any of their listed employee's favorites are delicious. Â The regular 9" size was pretty big to fill my large stomach, but there's a larger 12" size for those with even larger stomaches.
The tables come with Sorry, so I think I had more fun playing this childhood board game than eatting my cheesesteak, and the cheesesteak was pretty good, too. Â The tabletops are kinda greasy, but that only makes the experience more authentic. Â The only thing that's missing from complete authenticity is the usual gangster activity lurking outside cheesesteak stands in inner-city Philly.
1 star off: my bread was soggy
