This place just keeps getting worse and worse. Â If it even happens to be open when you go there they most likely are out of anything you may actually want or if they do have it the prices are so ridiculous I've actually walked out many times in disgust. I really truly wish they would just pull it together. Offer food / drinks people actually WANT at a price that is reasonable to pay. Â I can go to Urban Pantry or South Loop Pantry just blocks away and have a great selection and reasonable "convenience store" prices. Â Neither of those places seem to be having any issue with business.
Review Source:This establishment is pushing the fact it is under new management. Â Part of this is that they are now offering "gourmet" sandwiches at the gourmet price of $7. Â And when I say $7 is the price of the sandwich, I mean exactly that. Â It is not the price of a combo, just the sandwich. Â The person at the cash register claimed that $1 is taken off when purchased with a soda and chips. Â The receipt shows everything was charged at the full price and then $0.01 was deducted. Â So much for $1.00 off.
Unlike 7-11 which uses plastic wrap to keep the bread from being exposed to the air, East Coast Pantry puts their sandwiches into plastic clam shells. Â The result is that the top layer of bread ends up stale. Â Considering that 7-11 sandwiches are less than $5 and East Coast Pantry charges $7 for a sandwich with stale bread, I really wonder about the value of East Coast Pantry.
Considering that Potty Belly and Jimmy Johns are also available a short distance from East Coast Pantry, I don't see much benefit from their over-priced under-quality sandwiches. Â The so-called $1.00 off scam which really amounted to $0.01 off just provides further proof of the lack of quality and care for customers this place has. Â It is best avoided.
This convenience store/pantry (and I use the terms lightly), had NO milk today. No whole milk. No 2%. No skim. No gallons. No half gallons. No pints. No individual cartons. Nothing. Zilch. Zero. Nada. This place is now officially the most useless convenience store ever. Ever, ever. Ever, EVER, ever.
Review Source:I was so excited when I saw this place opening in winter of 2009 as I live in the high rise next door and the nearest "convenient" store is a decent walk away. Â What a BUST.
As previous Yelpers have said, this place never has what you need. Â What does it have? Â Every booze you can think of, cigarettes/cigars, and some candy. Â They never have every day staple household items, their non alcoholic beverage selection is so odd, and other random things rotate throughout the shelves. Â Summer 2010 they had a huge case with a bevy of Ben and Jerry's pints, though they were astronomical prices, at least you could get a treat. Â Went to get some today as my son was asking for ice cream and they carry no ice cream this summer. Â It is such a waste of a store, I will be surprised if it's still around in a year or two if they don't change their stock and get with the program.
I can't imagine anyone making a "big trip" out here, but if you live in this general area like I once did, it's a nice stop for a Veggie Tuna Melt. Seriously, the Veggie Tuna Melt made me like TUNA. And tomatoes, which I abhor. Powerful stuff, check it out.
Everything else is so-so. Even though they have soup listed on their menu, ask for soup and they will almost never have it. The breakfast menu is passable only if you're hungover and don't want to walk the extra few blocks to Dunkin' Donuts or 7-11 or Potbelly. Sobered up I wouldn't get it (and even hungover it's not greasy enough to help with the hangover pains). They have a good selection of soda pop; it's not just Coke, Pepsi, and Sprite, they actually have soda pops other places might not carry like Squirt and Ruby Red Squirt. They also have a good selection of iced tea in their refrigeration section.
I like this place (especially the Veggie Tuna Melt) but I want these guys to step up their game. Come on, guys. You're always super nice when I come in, but realize you're not the only place in town.
An NYC styled bodega, but if this place were in NYC it would be the absolute worst bodega there. Â If you live in the neighborhood and absolutely have to go here, check the expiration dates! Their items stay on the shelves for months. Â I bought a bag of chocolate chip cookies and all the chocolate had turned white. Â And stay away from teh produce entirely--I bought a lime that literally had 4 DROPS of juice in it. Â They rarely have commonly needed items, but stock the oddest gourmet items. Â No chocolate milk, no Diet Mountain Dew, but they had caviar at one point. Â They regularly close 20 or 15 minutes early or open a half hour late. Â The have a large menu of kitchen items--sandwiches, etc. Â And they never make them. Â I've gone in numerous times on a weekend morning and been told that they don't have pancakes, waffles, etc. despite them being listed on the menu. Â I once ordered a bacon and egg bagel and was told I could get a bagel, but nothing cooked. Â The very day that another convenience store opens near there, this place is dead in the water. Â It's a joke
Review Source:It's a very good convinient store. I've never waited more than 5 minutes for my salad or wrap. By the way, their Chicken Cesar Wrap is yummy!!!
People there are very nice and friendly.
Yes, sometimes they don't have necessary things (e.g. - bread), but I don't care - as soon as they always have fresh coffe, snacks and fruits.
In the beginning I thought I was just looking for things that weren't common when I went in here; maybe they weren't down with carrying eggs on a regular basis. Then the pattern just continued, no exaggeration each time I went in for a simple necessity they wouldn't have it. No lie the Sunday paper would be sold out by 8a on Sunday here, how many did you order; 10? I gave up going here unless it was to pop in for late night ice cream on the way home. This Saturday topped it for me though. I went in for 2 breakfast burritos and waited 25 minutes for them. I was the only person who ordered anything at the deli the entire time I was in there. The only other customers were quickly in and out for drinks, gum, etc. The people are very friendly but there is no reason I need to wait 25 minutes for 2 breakfast burritos and watch them come out into the store to grab ingredients for the requested order.
Review Source:I live next to this place, so it's my local shop, but 9 times out of 10 I can't find what I'm looking for and end up having to make the journey an extra few blocks to 7-Eleven. I'd rather give the money to a local shop than a huge chain, to be sure.
I feel bad writing this, because the people that work there are seriously nice and chill. But their selection is so random and sparse, and I always think "maybe they'll have what I'm looking for THIS time." They have at least 23 different kinds of kettle chips and alcohol for miles, but basic staples are completely absent. Ok, so I can buy some gourmet apricot and fruit cheese, but no hamburger buns? Really? It's not like they're lacking space, either.
Cool place. I come here and get sandwiches, which are absolutely delicious, even though the service can be a bit slow.
If you were looking to party, there's all the liquor and beer you could possibly want here. Also some very random, pricey food items. It's open late which is also great.
Very nice to have in the neighborhood.
It's like a 7-11 on steroids. Good sandwiches and soups to grab on the go. They also have a pretty impressive liquor selection for a small convenience store! Thank goodness this place is right below my building. If I ever need something and don't want to drive I can usually count on East Coast having what I'm looking for. Although ECP is a little pricey, I can't overlook the convenience of at least having it as an option.
Review Source:I like this place. A lot. It's a nice addition to the Printer's Row neighborhood.
Their sandwiches and wraps are very good - perfect for when you're in a rush and need a bite to eat. They added some nice soups and salads to their menu too.
The most impressive thing about this place is their wine and liquor selection. It's pretty nice for a small convenience store.
I totally admit I am a regular in this place.
I have lived in the neighborhood for a little over two years now, and was so happy to finally have a shoppe in the neighborhood where you can pick up a little bit of everything and anything.
The East Coast Pantry reminds me of a an NYC bodega (which could very well be the point) but not as dingy, since its brand new. Â Not only do they have about two coolers full of beer (and yes, you have your staples and even some more obscure brands) and a fair selection of wines and other alcohol (perfect f you need a bottle of vodka or wine to bring to a party - or to have brought to your party) and then lots of snacks, ice cream, salad dressing, tea, pet food, laundry detergent, bacon, eggs, etc. Â Pretty much anything you could possibly need if you happened to forget that one thing on your shopping trip to the grocery. Â
As Paul noted, there is another little indie convenience store in River City, but the one time I had been in (and when walking by to use the ATM outside their door) the lack of stock on the shelves and the sort of funky smell made me not want to go back - and head to Target or 7-11 if I ever needed something.
The prices seem reasonable (about the same as a 7-11) and I have to say, I would prefer to support a local indie merchant in the neighborhood any day! Â The people working here seemed quite friendly and the menu in the deli section seemed quite extensive. Â
A welcome addition to the neighborhood!
