I really wanted to love this place...it's so close to our house and it's on 50th and France (makes for a nice little date night). Â We sat at the bar, had a very helpful bartender. Â I really like their selection of local tap beers (and the bartender told us they do specials on the first Tuesday of each month with local beer masters - so that might be something we go check out). Â
As for food, we started with the buffalo calamari, which was pretty good. Â For main courses, I had the steak & pierogis and my wife, the beet salad with goat cheese. Â I really liked her salad (and probably would have been great with steak on it), but my steak and pierogis were just OK. Â I asked for medium rare on the steak, but it was more of a medium well. Â The pierogis were kind of dry, but decent flavor. Â 3 stars probably seems a little harsh, but Mpls restaurants are getting so good that I have to save up those 4's and 5's for truly exceptional food. Â We will probably be back, but mainly for local beers and apps (which is probably where their strength is).
I have to say, that I was really disappointed on my last visit to Edina Grill. My husband and I dine at the Blue Plate restaurants (Hyland Grill, Longfellow Grill and Edina Grill) a few times a year and usually enjoy it. We have experienced sketchy service quality though. Sometimes it is great and sometimes it sucks.
We went to Edina Grill on a whim a couple weeks ago when we were in the area. We each got the specials. I got fried chicken, he got a pork belly sandwich. For the prices, neither of these dishes was up to par. The mashed potatoes and gravy served with the chicken were so generic that they might as well have been out of a box/jar. The chicken was moist but lacked in flavor. Â My husbands pork belly sandwich was so impossible to eat that I can't imagine how it made it on a menu. The concept is good but the execution is horrible. We know that pork belly is generally fatty but his piece was so fatty that in the end, he barely ate any of the meat with his sandwich.
The only highlight of our meal there was the awesome beer selection.
It really makes me think about going back to any of the restaurants again.
On November 17 I ate here for breakfast with my friend, who I was visiting. Â This is a funky little place and I enjoyed the atmosphere. Â I had the Breakfast Tostadas which is corn tortilla, chorizo, goat cheese, black bean & corn salsa, scrambled eggs, pico de gallo, guacamole, lime and sour cream. Â It was very fresh and delicious. Â Totally filled me up for the 7 hour drive home. Â We also had the fresh squeezed orange juice which was some of the best orange juice I've ever had. They have a machine right inside the door where you can see the oranges getting squeezed. Â Everything was very fresh and the staff was really nice. Â If I lived in Minneapolis this is where I would bring visitors and make it a regular weekend stop.
Review Source:The Edina version of Longfellow Grill/Highland Grill, etc. Â This place appears to have a full bar which I don't think Highland does, and the bar area looks a litlte more upscale than Longfellow (this is Edina, after all!). Â Food is just as tasty and service is friendly. Â Wish all of these places would improve their coffee - it's not good, but refills are always plentiful which is appreciated. Â This is a solid place for a good meal!
Review Source:When we lived in Edina we were always defending it and the 50th and France places against spurious accusations of "Cake Eaters." Â But, then we moved away and slowly started to share the same accusations. Â Especially after our treatment at that motherfucking Pig and Fiddle. Â
But then we went to Edina Grill, unexpectedly (what, with Edina being in the name and all) and really, really liked the place.
We went early (5:30ish) on a Saturday and despite the fact that the place was pretty full, and we had a 16 month old toddler, we were seated pretty lickity split and the kid was given a small cup of Goldfish crackers and some crayons. They know what they're doing. Â
The food was great. Â And the green bean tempura appetizer was a huge hit. The beer selection very good. Â And, you know, bottom line -- they were so nice to us. Â
We were so full we didn't even get to eat any dessert -- or cake -- in Edina. Â
Fortunately, the kid's dish came with a big oatmeal cookie. Â He'll never know...
Really disappointed!! But I'm anxious to go back because of it's interesting menu and widespread praise. Perhaps this visit was a fluke?
First, it was my birthday. The best day of the year! I was home from school with my family and boyfriend (who goes to school in PA while I'm in WI.. so he's never home!) and I was set on going to Edina Grill for the big meal. My brothers eat tons of "standard" foods, and I like to have more refined dishes, so this seemed like the perfect place for everyone.
The service was NOT even close to par. It was awful. Our server was impersonal and absent. She only gave us four sets of silverware when she sat us down and there were seven of us. They brought our food and left hastily, and my dad had to walk all the way across the dining area to ask her for more sets.
On the other hand, the food was good, but not super. The highlight of the meal was the banana waffle, crispy but light and delicious. My salmon and eggs were tasty, again, not mind-blowing. (We went for brunch.) My brothers and dad were, unfortunately, disappointed with the portion sizes they received. They're pretty big guys and probably could have eaten two or three plates each. I was mistaken in interpreting the word "grill" to mean that the restaurant would serve flavorful (somewhat greasy?) food in substantial portions. A better name would be "Edina Bistro," for anyone planning to go especially for the "grill" part. Whatever! Tasty food, bad service, but I'm still willing to go back...
When I lived in Linden Hills the boy and I would frequently order take-out breakfast from Edina Grill and for the most part the food was consistently good. Once they gave us someone else's order - that was odd to me because why would you ask for a name and number for an order and then you don't bother to check the ticket to make sure you're giving people the right food.
1. The American Breakfast. A standard order - I prefer my eggs sunny-side up. Awesome hash browns, tasty bacon, and toast.
2. Eggs Benedict. Eh...it's alright. Kind of bland.
3. Biscuits and Gravy. It's good, not the best I've ever had.
4. Turkey Burger. Love this!
5. Bacon Burger. Always yummy.
Edina Grill isn't my favorite place, but it's good when they're on their game.
A few weeks ago on a beautiful sunny late summer morning, we sat outside on the patio for brunch. This is a nice spot for al fresco dining. We ordered two egg dishes. The portions were not whopping, like some brunch spots may serve. But they were sufficient. The ingredients were high quality and the food was prepared well. But these dishes still lacked flavor that wowwed me. We also ordered a lavender blueberry lemonade (or something like that), which was refreshing but I could not really detect the lavender or the blueberry (I think it was blueberry, maybe another berry).
Review Source:I am a fan of the Lowry, and a recent visit Edina Grill proved  there is another winner in the Blue Plate family of restaurants.  We happened to luck out and visit during a Ladies Night presented by the city of Edina- there were three different $5 cocktails and a short list of food specials for the evening.  I had a blackberry mojito, which was delicious with the perfect ratio of mint to sweet. Â
Unfortunately they were missing all the ingredients to make macaroni and cheese flat bread, which struck me as a bit odd. Â Does that mean they couldn't make regular macaroni and cheese either? Â Anyway, I opted for the barbecue pork and waffles instead, after reading rave reviews of them here. Â They were definitely delicious, and even better with a bit of maple syrup on top. Â Sounds gross, tastes fantastic. Â Â Our service was spectacular and although the restaurant was loud, we could hear our conversation. Â I will definitely return to try breakfast
I was impressed with this place, but would you expect any less in Edina?:) Â Edina Grill had excellent service with a decent menu. It was a bit of a tight squeeze but such a fun and entertaining atmosphere. Â My egg white breakfast was excellent along with the mimosas we ordered. I will go back on my next visit to MN
Review Source:Great place for a quick lunch during the week. Â I have a few favorite meals here. Â I would recommend getting the 3 cheese grilled cheese with the sweet and fresh tomato chutney-mmmm! Â Or go for the turkey burger with sweet potato fries. Remember the ingredients used here are all often local, organic and made from scratch. Â Their lemonade is freshly sqeezed and refreshing beverage to complete the meal. Â
The decor is also pretty awesome with unique light fixtures, large wall prints and a giant chalkboard wall. Â Although I did have an alcohol drink this time, I did read that they were going to only be serving local beers!
I enjoyed dinner here with friends a few weeks ago. Until then, I hadn't been to this newer, much more upscale location. Not to worry. Same great food and wonderful service but the prices seem to have crept up only a little.
We started with beer-battered green beans served with a savory/sweet dipping sauce. I followed with a nightly special consisting of grilled chicken served over pasta primavera. What could have been a bland, generic dish I found to be quite tasty and well executed. Dessert was a rich, dense pot de creme. BTW, the noise level even on what was a bustling Friday evening (at least where we were seated in a booth toward the front of the house) was low enough to make conversation effortless.
Tried the place for the first time last night and was really impressed. I was initially worried about parking, but found a garage right behind the restaurant. I sat at the bar and had a local microbrew and the fish tacos. They have ~8 local beers on tap and a small but diverse menu. The bartender was very friendly and the food came out fast. The fish tacos were great, the beer was good, the staff was friendly and fast. Not a lot to dislike about this place. Price for 1 beer and an entree including tip was ~$25.
Review Source:I don't know why when I try a new place, especially for breakfast I don't get something simple which is what I really want but am seduced by things like the meatloaf hash. I don't even finish it. It has bernaise sauce but I think they add extra tarragon in the hash itself. It overpowered it. I was told the lemonade wasn't fresh squeezed but it wasn't from the fountain. Not bad, what was bad was the $3.50 for it. What I did like is the L-shaped layout, the dark moodiness, the bathroom, good service. The food is always great no matter what blue plate you go to while still maintaining its individuality. This part of Edina, 50th and France is isolationist in the most extreme sense as far as pretense goes. I'm watching one of the waitresses doing the "bunny dip" serving water, UFB.
Review Source:We tried this place on a whim yesterday, and wow!
I guess I'd always been a little leery of the Edina Grill because I assumed it would be out of our price range... a little reverse discrimination on my part in regards to Edina, I guess. My bad. Actually, the value was fantastic: we went all out with appetizer, alcohol, two entrees, and dessert, and our check (before tip) was only a little over $50.
The food was mind-blowing. Really. We started with the pierogies, which were perfectly cooked and had this amazing horseradish dip on the side. For dinner, my husband had the mac and cheese, and according to him, it was the best he had ever tasted. (I knew it was something special when I saw the revelatory light on his face as soon as he took that first bite. That's the kind of look you like to see on your darlin's face!)
I chose the BBQ Pork on Corn Waffles, just because it sounded like it would kick ass. And yep, it did. I kept eating long after I was full. Along with my meal I had the mango mojito, which was quite nice. It comes straight up in a martini glass, and at $8, it's a little pricier than I'm used to, but the taste of that fresh mango was definitely worth it.
As great as the food was, it wasn't the best part of our experience. That would be Becky, our server. Her friendly, easygoing manner, along with her thorough knowledge of the menu, pushed our experience over the top. (She suggested that mango mojito, which I'm still daydreaming about.) When the meal was over, we were presented with a coupon for $5 off of a $20 purchase at our next visit, just for coming during the Edina Art Fair. And it doesn't look like there's an expiration date on it... not that it would matter, since we're going back ASAP.
I am actually surprised it has 4 out of 5 stars.
My fiance took me here on a date a few weekends ago. We were recommended to go here by a good friend.
First off, the service was outstanding. The server we had was very laid back and could tell us anything off the menu. He also gave us a lot of information about the establishments and owners.
I ordered the beef stroganoff and it was amazing! The best I have ever had! I couldn't stop eating it. The portion size was perfect and granted it was a little pricer than a standard restaurant, it was the best; it doesn't matter.
I also had a martini. I rarely ever drink but decided to have one of their drinks. I had asked the server which one was the best tasting. He offered a perfect one and I loved it! My fiance had pulled pork and waffles and it was so tasty! We seriously couldn't stop eating the food.
One of my favorite restaurants I have eaten at here in Minnesota. I think it's as good as it gets and would come back every day, if I could.
I'm usually a chicken and veggies kind of gal but I went out on a limb and ordered the BBQ Pork and Waffles. Previously, I'd never had anything that became a favorite here. I think I've stumbled upon it now - the BBQ and waffles was so yummy! I don't usually like onions and I loved what the crispy onions added to the dish. Honestly - before tonight, Edina Grill wasn't a place I was really excited to return to... Now I'm ready to go back tomorrow for this dish!
Review Source:My family went here last Friday for fish and chips in observance of Lent. Â Though my mom went rogue and ordered fish tacos--they were also delicious and had a little kick to them if you seek a little more pep. Â
I didn't realize until we got there that Edina Grill is part of the Blue Plate companies (which also owns Highland Grill and Groveland Tap--two St. Paul establishments that had excellent reviews for the fish and chips). Â West siders, you can get the same delicious experience without having to go to St. Paul.
Reason im giving 2 stars is very simple. Â "Hostess" Â When people walk in to your establishment the first thing you should do is host, maybe a hello. Â Do not in any way shape or form ignore a hello from the customer and then just say "follow me". Â It throws the experience off. Â Im from Jersey and it was my first time there. Â
Food was decent, the reuben my buddy ordered and my cuban sandwich was good. Â The waitress was nice. Â
Will i go again. Â Dont think so. Im not paying $30 for lunch for a kid to be rude and mess up my lunch experience.
Great spot for weekend breakfast! I was pleasantly surprised to see their patio furniture was out since it was so nice on Saturday. I ordered the Farmer's Breakfast which was a lot of food for under $10. Our server was awesome & gave us a few suggestions since everything on the menu looked great.
Only downgrade: Can't order booze until 10am!
Manfriend and I stopped in to "celebrate" Valentine's Day at Edina Grill and found the overall experience unexpectedly/pleasantly good.
Since our reservation wasn't until 8:30pm, the restaurant/bar areas were quite dead. Â Our server, Erin, was topnotch friendly and really enjoyable to interact with.
We ordered pierogies for an appetizer and thought they were a tasty, and somewhat heavy, item to start with. Â They tasted baked, which is not my favorite, but the fried onions and horseradish sour cream made up for it. Â
As an entree, the tilapia tacos (three for $13) don't come with any accompaniment and don't really need to due to the hefty amount of food that's packed in each of the three tacos. Â The fish was fresh and was perfectly complimented by the mixture of guacamole, black bean & corn salsa, Napa cabbage, and chili lime sour cream. Â I could have easily made it into two meals...but decided to devour my entire plate in an embarrassingly fast amount of time instead.
Manfriend had the fish n' chips and was surprisingly impressed. Â I nabbed one of his sweet potato fries, which comes with a mouthwatering chipotle pesto aioli, and about keeled over due to the thick-cut slice of salty heaven.
I gave Edina Grill four stars because food and our server made our dinning experience more enjoyable than we were anticipating. Â My only criticism with Edina Grill is how the ambiance feels more like a calculated chain restaurant. Â I wish it felt a little more upscale than a jazzed up Perkins.
Cheers to going beyond expectations!
I have a bit of a happy history with Edina Grill. Â I didn't move to the Cities from a land of culinary adventure, and so my initial discoveries of things like sweet potato fries made me utterly elated. Â Thus, Edina Grill was one of my favorite spots initially.
However, a more recent trip to Edina Grill brought me back to reality. Â After visiting other Grills around the Cities, plus a zillion other restaurants, that magic was gone. Â Instead, I was left with the joys of trying to get a table at a restaurant in a high-traffic area. Â There was a big line and a big wait; but after we pointed out several open tables on the patio to the hostess, suddenly she was able to seat us. Â Not sure why she couldn't see what we were seeing. Â Beyond that, the only issue may be that Edina Grill is spoiled by their volume and forgets basic things like "calling from inside to the full patio area to have a discussion with one of your servers about cutting her hours typically isn't the right way to handle this conversation." Â
The menu hasn't really changed in all this time and is similar to others in the Grill chain. Â On last trip, my salmon was tasty but seemed to have enough oil on it for four dishes. Â The calamari appetizer was tasty though, and the beer selection is always great.
I'll likely stick to Longfellow if I need my Grill fix as Edina is out of my way and I don't think it's worth 45 minutes' wait for a table there. Â But if I'm in the area, it's not busy, and I've got a craving for sweet potato fries, I'll be more than happy to stop in.
Busy and bustling early on Saturday afternoon. Â
Quickest open seating was at the bar.
Service was very good.
House chardonnay was alright.
Breakfast chilaquiles were good, although very different from what I've eaten in Mexico. Â
And I must say that I like them better Zihuatanejo-style.
This is a good neighborhood place with a menu that's more creative than you'd expect, but mainstream enough to appeal to the more timid eaters. They have some truly decadent selections, but I also appreciate their nods to healthier eating. The egg white scramble - loaded with a range of vegetables and fresh herbs and served with a cup of fruit salad - is a standout for breakfast. It's healthy without being a plate of grim deprivation. I'm also a fan of their lunch choices, including a really nice rendition of a Cuban sandwich. I also give them a big thumbs up for a kid's menu that includes more daring choices such as steak and pierogis and grilled chicken as well as the usual mac n' cheese and burger standards.
Good coffee and friendly service round out my experience -- solid food, with a bit of a creative bent, and menu choices to appeal to a range of eating styles.
MSP Magazine bills Restaurant Week as a time when participating eateries "showcase their culinary offerings" and as a "week's worth of fabulous foods". Â The chefs at the Edina Grill must've missed these points as none of the courses I had the other night were anything spectacular. Â To be fair, I have been to the EG a few times and thought the food I ordered (burgers both times) were relatively good. Â
My first course consisted of the small grill salad which was not only slightly soggy but also a bit warm.  One of my friends ordered the white bean dip for his starter which tasted like plain refried beans heated from a can.  The main entrée I ordered was the Thai chicken which sounded fantastic based on the description but fell flat on all levels.  It's pretty sad when I eat somewhere and think to myself that I could make the same dish at home...and it probably would've tasted better.  The chicken was really dry and the tamarind sauce on the sparse mound of rice was just gross.  Perhaps the only thing I liked about the entire meal was the pumpkin praline sundae desert... which isn't saying much since it's pretty hard to mess up ice cream and also the fact that I like pumpkin flavored everything!
Our server for the evening was friendly but only seemed to make herself present when bringing out the different courses. Â I usually drink water like a fish but she didn't seem to notice (or get the hint) that my glass needed to be refilled. Â As my friends and I were leaving I noticed a group of people sitting next to our table that ordered burgers and sandwiches with fries and couldn't help but have food envy.
I got here to meet some friends, but unfortunately we were running late. Being from CA I am used to places being open late, but they close at 10, boo.
We managed to get a drink in though before they closed and when they were ready to really close up they were very polite about asking us to leave. I would love to come back here and get some food off their amazing looking menu.
When I lived over near Edina, this was my favorite place to dine at in the 50th & France area, especially for brunch.  With dishes like Meatloaf Hash & Eggs, the Breakfast Burger, and Brie & Spinach Frittata, most should have little difficulty finding something on the menu, especially if you like big, bold flavors.  The Chilaquiles, however, is my favorite item on the menu thus far - one of the most well-balanced, Mexican-inspired dishes (flavor and heat) I've ever had.  If you like the Chilaquiles and are looking for other ethnic breakfast dishes, I'd also suggest trying pretty much anything on the Victor's 1959 Café breakfast menu or the Mexican Omelette at Hot Plate. Â
Next time, I'd like to go for lunch or dinner. Â Although a tad on the pricey side, they also have a decent craft beer list for a diner-like restaurant - Surly, Left Hand, Lift Bridge, Goose Island all stand out for me.
I'm so glad we hit up the Edina Grill for a lazy Saturday morning breakfast. I've been living in the MSP area for quite some time and had never been to any of the Blue Plate Restaurant Company stops (Highland Grill, Longfellow Grill, Groveland Tap or 3 Squares) and I figured it was time that changed. Â
For starters, the menu rocks. Â Usually when I go to breakfast joints I find one or two items that sound appealing and the selection process is pretty simple. Â Not so much here - how to choose? Â Roasted veggie hash, breakfast tosatadas (I'm a sucker for mexi breakfasts), brie & spinach frittata! Â Even the standard offerings are jazzed up with quality ingredients, the farmer's breakfast of hashbrowns and scrambled eggs includes grilled onions and Oregon Tillamook Cheddar. Â Mmm. Â I settled on the Chilaquiles and they were quite tasty. Â I will return, but might have to try the others in the Blue Plate family first.
This is a wonderful stand-by for us. The service is typically terrific and friendly, and there is at least one bartender there that will get a job offer if I should ever open a bar myself. She was friendly, and my sidecar was superb.
It's perhaps fair to say the food is not always perfect, but it's always above average. And there are a few things there that are always fabulous. They do a nice fish, and the pancakes at brunch are made just the way I like them. My vegetarian daughter loves the menu, and is always eager to go there.
I will confess, however, I really go there just for the beer-battered green beans on the appetizer menu. C'mon, try 'em! You'll like 'em with a bit of malt vinegar. I've been known to make a meal of them, and when I learned about a year ago that they had altered the recipe, I was concerned, but there was no need to worry. They didn't appear to have reformulated the batter and presentation to save money, they did it to genuinely improve the dish--something I would not have believed possible.
I have never been to the sister-restaurants in Longfellow and elsewhere, but the Edina Grill will continue to be one of the best remedies to the "Where d'ya'wanna go?" malaise.
My dear friend and her parents took me to the Edina Grill for a late breakfast one morning. They all raved about it, and soon I understood why.
Despite the rush, we were seated quickly in a spacious corner booth. Our server came right away to take beverage orders and quickly returned, with drinks, and took our meal orders. I decided on the spinach and brie frittata. It was SO delicious! I don't eat much brie because of the strong flavor, but in this case it was used in moderation and was quite tasty. The spinach and basil chiffonade on top was a nice touch; if anything, it could have used more basil. The taste and texture of my frittata were nearly perfect. (Eggs can be tricky sometimes.) My hash browns were also really good, crispy and not too greasy. The portion sizes also seemed just right to me -- I left feeling full, not stuffed.
Breakfast comfort food with a gourmet spin is definitely one of the Edina Grill's high points. Even as we were leaving, the outstanding service continued, as the passing waitstaff smiled and waved and wished us a good day. Any day that starts at the Edina Grill is off to a great start.
amazing. Edina Grill is uber-amazing.
atmosphere: love the decor here but more importantly, the service here is really incredible. I loved our waittress who was extremely helpful and I couldn't help but notice the family-like bond between the staff. They looked like they really enjoyed working together.
Spinach and Bree Frittata: Deliciously made Frittata with just the right amount of cheese. The hashbrowns were so crispy and tasty. The english muffins were golden brown and toasted to a nice crunch.
rating: 9/10
Banana Waffle: I took one bite and was in love. The waffle was crispy, the caramel syrup was sweet but not too sweet. The grilled banana was actually my favorite part of the dish, with nice grill marks.
rating: 10/10
I'll be back very soon EG. You're now a favorite.
Met a group of friends for an early morning breakfast. I couldn't have imagined meeting anyone at 7 am on a Saturday before, but with a new born, time really has no meaning.
My crew is an independent bunch who all define "Healthy Breakfast" differently. Â Some of them went the "Oatmeal Pankcakes" route (they're gearing up for the Summer) which were a hit. Â Others were battling the effects of the night before and ordered the "Breakfast Burger." Â Like it sounds this is "grilled chorizo sausage, hard cooked egg, hash browns, Tillamook cheddar cheese and fresh spinach on a toasted bun seasoned with pesto." To quote my friend who ordered it: "best decision I've made all day." Â I had the "Buttermilk Pancakes." They were marketed that they have been using the same recipe for these particular flapjacks since 1993 which was suppose to carry some weight. Â They were just average (then again, I always am partial to Perkins pancakes) but I know what I'm getting when I go back!
If Edina Grill went public, I think they would never go out of business with me as their primary consumer and investor. Â I'm sure even without me, they'd be fine, but I definitely would contribute a significant portion to their wealth.
That being said....I LOVE LOVE LOVE this restaurant. Â Haphazardly, the man and I stumbled upon this location not knowing we were in for the best food of our lives (this side of town...and any town in MN for that matter). Â I usually gauge a restaurant by their service, the portions, quality of food, the price, and consistency (meaning -- if I come back, will the food always be prepared the same?) With Edina, the answers were excellent, excellent, UBER-excellent, really excellent, and Always Consistent.
I love how every single time I've been there, I've been greeted with smiles and treated to overwhelmingly delicious breakfast plates that make my tastebuds do hoola hoops around themselves. Â The hash and holly breakfast is my latest favorite, having usurped the title from my previous fave - the walleye and shrimp benedict. Â You really can't go wrong with either one though.
If you can't already tell from my review, the breakfast dishes are THEE way to go. Â I know the turkey burgers are great..blah blah blah...but you really need to get your butt in here on a saturday or sunday for brunch and just treat yourself to all this breakfast goodness because darn it...you deserve it! Â And breakfast is THEE most important meal of the day.
