So my co-workers turned me on to this place and Boy am I grateful.

Service: You order at the counter, are given a number, and are brought your food.

Food:  Fantastic, cooked fresh, a mix of vietnamese and Chinese food.  This is really really outstanding weather you want the usual americanized Chinese dishes or something more authentic.  I went with one of the vietnamese dishes and i was not disappointed.

Cleanliness/Atmosphere:  Super clean, I've never spotted a dirty dish and the resturant is decorated quite modern.  Not like the usual discount strip mall Chinese place that is for sure.

This tidy newish building holds within its confines a rarity in Indy. This rarity has caused great men to bow before its might. A simple peasant dish, in reality. Ubiquitous in Vietnam, on most  street corners.

In Indy? Only a few choice spots.

This rarity I speak of is pho (forget that the Vietnamese stylization, not gonna even try to find out how to do it, but pronounced fuh). Luxurious rice noodles in a light broth glistening with the little globules of fat.

A pristine condiment dish overflowing with the bounty of sweet basil, crisp jalapeno, crunchy bean sprouts and lime accompanies this dish. Don't forget the little jar of crimson chili paste. Spoon a little in, a splash of hoisin sauce, then a little more chili paste.

The service is quick and friendly, the space is clean and welcoming. A lot of nice choices on the menu, but the pho selection keeps me coming back. Get it with well done beef only if you like. Or opt for the tripe, rare beef and meatball.

Top notch (on the Mid-west scale, of course) One star less for the over usage of MSG

I am a sucker for family owned businesses with awesome people and great service. The Vietnamese food here is wonderful not only because it is tasty, but because you're being served in the comforts of this quaint little place and their lovely owners Lily and her husband. You just know you'll always get good service, even when they are out the door busy.

My favorites include the Grilled Pork Chop over white rice with a fried egg on top, Pho Tai (beef noodles soup) and their crab rangoons beat most of what the town's Chinese places can offer!! Yum!

Pho! I can't get enough of the rare steak bowl. Not familiar with this Vietnamese delight? Imagine a bowl big enough to wash your face. Now, fill it with a massive portion of rice noodles, thinly shaved, rare beef, scallions, long strands of white onions, and maybe some other tasty vegetables. Drown these choice ingredients in the most savory broth and serve it to the customer with a plate laden with bean sprouts, Thai basil, sliced jalapeño and lime. Garnish to taste with these fixings, and season with the Rooster (Sriracha), chili garlic paste, and copious amounts of hoisin.

    All for $7.

This is now my go to for a Southside Asian comfort food joint.

I remember in the 80's when Egg Roll #1 opened.  Owned by a Chinese family.  When they were bought by the Vietnamese family, they had the "secret" menu in addition to the Chinese (Americanized) food we all loved!

The Pho is amazing!  Having traveled extensively, I have had the opportunity to sample so many Pho recipes (each one is different!).  Its all about the broth.  I've been going to this restaurant for so long, I always greet the owners with a happy "Si-Cho!".

Service is excellent and portions are good.  Good value!

    Try it!

We've been here a couple times and stopped in again this evening for an early dinner.  Pretty yum!  Owners & waitstaff are extremely helpful & friendly.  It really is fast food but up a notch.  It really is self serve, but they're available anyway

I have to admit that lately I've been on a serious Pho trek here in Indy.  (by the way, it's pronounced Fu, but it seems weird for Hoosiers so we say Fo)
1st one tried--Saigon, was authentic, too much fish sauce for me, I'll try again though
2nd --Egg Roll #1 twice, really liked the rare beef pho & well done flank
3rd--Sandra's Rice & Noodles twice, chicken pho had really rich broth! yum
4th--Back here for chicken pho, good but Sandra's broth was richer

So the good news about this place for me is all the condiments at each table!!  Being one who cooks at home alot, I love to add to a dish and make it my own personal taste.  They provide hoisen, soy sauce, chili oil, sweet & sour sauce, hot mustard (homemade, not the yuk one) & sambal! -yeah, on each table.
We've had Cashew Chicken & Sesame Chicken, Szechuan Veggies, crab rangoon, egg drop soup, eggrolls, Twice cooked pork & we love the Vietnamese eggrolls over the Chinese!
    It was all good--
Oh, and did I mention the condiments on each table?!

Alright Yelpers - I finally made the voyage to Egg Roll Number 1 based on your trusty reviews!

I went in with two items on my radar: Pho Tai and Vietnamese spring rolls (veggie)
I left with every single bite of my Pho Tai and spring rolls in my tummy (this meal was probably worth of two portions, but damn, why stop now?).

The menu is enormous - a mixture of Vietnamese and Chinese options. And the budget-friendly prices allow diners to dabble in a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I'd venture to say Egg Roll Number 1 is one of the tidiest Chinese restaurants I've been in - not that this factor has ever stopped me from stuffing my face.

I highly recommend the pho tai piled high with bean sprouts, jalapeno slices and basil. It's a bit greasier than Saigon's version, but equally delicious. The spring rolls were a-okay, I'm thinking it might have been an extra-spicy batch of basil that through it off a bit for me.

Now, I'm a bit pissed at myself for hogging down the whole pho tai last night and not saving enough for today's lunch....

The pho is great, of course, but I never met a pho I didn't like. I've only had the vietnamese menu. Here's a few tips in addition to pho:

Spring rolls are great with shrimp, pork, and veggies. They're so fresh with such a bright taste.

Vietnamese egg rolls are wonderful, much better than the usual Chinese fare. They're smaller in diameter and they're tasty.

The fried dumplings from the chinese menu are what they usually call pot stickers, but these are different - they're chicken! Usually pot stickers are ground pork, so it's different and interesting.

All of these appetizers come with great dipping sauces - one is a thick brown fish sauce, one a thinner fish sauce with vinegar and peppers, and the usual pot sticker sauce based on soy sauce with vinegar and spices.

Rare beef pho. Not bad for this part of the country. Skimpy with the greens. Broth not great, but not bad either.  Inexpensive.

Great Pho selection!  I get the vegetarian/tofu and my husband gets beef and tripe.  The egg rolls are phenomenal and there is lots of window seating.  A bright, fun place with great food and very friendly service.

What the pho? Are you pho real? Yes, order their specialty of course - the PHO.

Finally after all these years, I pay a visit after hearing people raving about the pho. I'm confused for being a 1st timer there. I think you order at the counter, but if you have a larger party - they have table service. Our waitress knew the Vietnamese menu forwards and backwards. Even in Vietnamese, when it's not even her primary language. Impressive. Amusing.

    Recommendations -
    Most popular items:
    - Pho Xe Lua (bigger bowl) - thought the portion was smaller vs. other places
    - Pho Dac Biet (regular bowl) - great for the lighter eaters

    Appetizer:
    - Goi cuon (shrimp & pork clear wrapped spring rolls) - w/ spicy hoisin dipping sauce
    - Cha gio (fried Vietnamese egg rolls) - dunked in sweet fish sauce

    Beverages:
    - Nuoc dua (coconut juice) - sweet, refreshing
    - Ca phe sua da (Vietnamese coffee) - sweetened w/ condensed milk
    - Sua dau nanh (soybean milk) - canned, but still goes well with meals

The pho here is good for the Indy area. Perhaps one of the better, but I still like Long Thanh's pho a tad bit more and it's less of a drive for me. Egg Roll #1's pho wins by a margin with it's very clear and flavorful broth. I would just drink the broth alone. It only lacked in the meat quality and herbs to go with it. I'd like to see a combination of sliced beef, beef balls, tendons, and the tripe if that was a customizable option.

Overall, great place if you want a very casual, affordable, and satisfying meal. Probably not the best for date night as it tends to become a bit loud (kids screaming, conversations echoing) unless he or she doesn't mind shouting across the table just to hear what you're saying.

I can't believe I dismissed this place for so long, when I work just down the road. My god, so many bowls of pho I've missed.

I love this place. It's incredibly cheap chinese food, but it's always good quality. The service is amazingly great. When I feel like cheap chinese, their $3.99 lunch specials cannot be beat - entree, rice, soup, egg roll. The hot and sour soup is the best I've ever had.

This was also my introduction to pho, that steaming bowl of amazingness. It's such an incredibly comfort food, and I'm enjoying stopping in at Eggroll every week or so and trying a new one. I have no frame of reference to be honest, but I know that I'm enjoying the hell out of everything they give me.

    Now I'm starving. Crap.

I've been to all of the restaurants offering pho around Indy....and I'm sad to say I won't be returning to this one.

The pho ga had some cheap chucks of chicken found in the fast food mall Chinese...but the broth was good.

The service was incredibly slow...it took an hour for two bowls of pho and the spring rolls arrived after we were halfway through our pho.  People were cleaning off their own tables.

Last but not least, the atmosphere was horrible....very loud...and very hectic.

    Wish I could say better...

This place came highly recommended to me through various friends. I finally got a chance to sit down and have some lunch there.

I was in the mood for some Vietnamese food, so I ordered #9 off of the menu, which is a marinated pork chop served with a fried egg. Kind of like some kind of don-katsu dish, but Vietnamese instead; no bowl or seaweed. It was tasty. Fantastic. I wish the pork chop was thicker, but that's my American man-gut and appetite speaking. The meal also came with simple onion soup, which was also tasty.

This restaurant is dead to me.

It used to be a hole in the wall- and oasis of good service and good food in an area diseased by chains. This was my favorite restaurant. Hands down.- A few weeks ago I went to their new location, and after waiting in line for a few minutes I was treated like a pest by the cashier. I ordered, and I was lucky to grab a table. After waiting 20 minutes I asked someone behind the counter how long it would be. "Soon." After fifteen more minutes I asked again. "Soon." After discussing with my girlfriend, I waited five more minutes and asked for my money back. "But your order should be out soon." Nope. I've heard that one before. You can't even come up with another line to placate me?! Give me my money back.- No apologies. No discounts. No free meal. When I asked for my money back it was given to me and I left. They acted like people ask for their money back all the time. They acted like regular customers ask for their money back all the time.

This was my favorite restaurant. I was sad, but I wasn't just going to give up on it. Maybe something happened in the kitchen- maybe someone called in sick. I rationalized. I want to love this place. A few weeks pass. I go in again. Immediately, I see a lot of people waiting with numbers in their hands and a dozen tickets in the kitchen window. I just left. I wasn't even going to try.

A few weeks later, I visit again, eternally optimistic. I ordered. I found a table easily. After fifteen minutes I got my food- only my food. My girlfriend is with me and she has nothing. We don't even have our drinks yet or the fried dumplings that we ordered as an appetizer. After asking for our drinks twice they were finally brought to our table, and nothing was good. It was alright, but nothing was good. As I looked around I noticed that the only people in the restaurant that weren't white were behind the counter or in the kitchen. This place used to be filled with native diners.- Filled. I would eat here some nights and be the only white guy in the entire restaurant. It seems that they already realized this place had gone to shit.

I don't think I can ever go back here, and I certainly couldn't recommend to anyone else- unless you enjoy mediocre food and limitless frustration.

I always thought Egg Roll #1 was some cheap Chinese joint when in fact it's a nice Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant.  Went there for first time and liked the new stand-alone location.  Also liked the fast-casual ordering process, where you walk up to the counter to order, find a table, and they will bring the food out to you.  If you are not sure what you want you can look at the 30+ items w/ pictures on the wall, and order by number.

Being a first-timer I had to order a Pho to see how it stacks up.  I ordered the Pho dac Biet, a combination beef Pho.  First thing I noticed it had more ingredients than the ones at Saigon or King Wok.  I even took sips of the broth and it didn't taste like MSG water.  I was pleasantly surprised to find beef tripe in the Pho, which is one of my favorite dim sum delicacies.

I also ordered a Mongolian Beef lunch special to go, which was a little more disappointing.  The portions were fairly small and it only included a small scoop of rice.  The egg roll was huge though and it made up for the lack of food in the main entree.  But then again, the lunch special was only $3.99 so if you want a moderate lunch it's not bad.  For my appetite I will stick w/ lunch specials at Golden Wok.

The Pho here is as good as Saigon and the prices are cheaper than Saigon. My bf and I ordered two bowls of Pho, an appetizer of Spring roll and a Soy Bean Milk all totaled up to $20.

The service is fast and they have a lot of choices in the menu which we're going to try the next time we visit!

This was our first night here. So far, I like their pho the best compared to King Wok, Sizzling Wok Hai, and Saigon. Broth is everything when it comes to pho and Egg Roll #1 has the best broth. Not only that, the cuts of meat were high quality and very tender (I got the pho tai).

The menu is small in terms of Vietnamese choices, but they have the basics. The bowl size is a little smaller than other places (like King Wok). I usually never finish the broth at those places though because it doesn't taste as good. But here, I lifted the bowl to my face and drank every last drop almost forgetting I was in public. This pho tasted like mom's and like the pho in Saigon.

Love the new, huge location just a few feet north of the old strip mall location.  Pho is the story here and it's a story with a happy ending.  Sweet, savory broth with firm, not overcooked, noodles.

I wish the portions were a little bit larger.  The bowls are a little small.

We used to go to this place more when we lived on the east side. Now that we live in Carmel, we go to it once every couple of years. Too bad, because it's one of or the best Vietnamese restaurants in the Indianapolis area.

We ordered the large pho with all the beef parts, pork chop bun, stir-fried rice noodles, and fried egg rolls. My kids and wife inhaled the pork chop like orca swallowing penguins so I have no first hand knowledge of how good it was. The pho was huge and contained beef meatballs, flank, tripe, etc. and was delicious.

This place just moved to a larger place almost next door to its old place and it was packed when we went on a Saturday night. It's good to see hard working people succeed.

After reading a few reviews from my friends I am wondering why in the world I do not have a review written about this place? It is definitely one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants in town.  I swear I have either drafted many reviews and lost them or else written them in my head before lol.  This place serves Vietnamese and Chinese dishes.  The chinese dishes are pretty flavorful and very cheap if you come during lunch hour.  Everyone in the city already knows this because they are PACKED during lunch. There is usually a line at the counter and many people call to go orders in and just come pick it up. Recently they moved next door into a freestanding building and even that place is packed, there is a wait just to sit down, and the building is like 5 times bigger than what they had.  They are very quick and concerned about the quality and timeliness of your order which is not very common for asian restaurants.  It's considered a fast food joint in my book because of the types of food and the style of business, but so much better than you can imagine.  I am very picky about my Vietnamese food and always leave satisfied here.  My favorite is the vietnamese eggrolls - wrap them in lettuce and dip them in the fish sauce that comes out with them. YUM  Their Pho is great and so is the My Kho.  The only thing i'm not too crazy about is the Banh Canh Gio Heo because there is no true Gio Heo in there and the crab is imitation :(   Just about everything else is good and comes out piping hot.   The owner is very sweet and she moves quickly around to make sure everyone is taken care of.  They don't offer a lot of Vietnamese options but what they do offer they do it well. No frills, just great food, great service, and great prices! If you have never tried Pho, this is a great place to try it because you'll know how's it suppose to taste.  As good as it gets besides home cooking!  People keep coming back for more, you see a lot of actual Vietnamese people eating here, and they run an honest business.  One of the best things on the south side for sure :)

Very good, fast, cheap vietnamese food. The Pho here is very good, one of the best in Indy. They serve Chinese and Vietnamese food here. The Chinese food here is good, but pretty much like many of the other Chinese joints in the city. I usually actually order one Chinese dish and one Viet dish because everything looks so good, the egg drop soup is the best ive had anywhere by the way. The vietnamese egg rolls are full of meat and very tasty.
Try the vietnamese food if you never have, everything is very flavorful and good sized portions. One of my other favorites is the Mi Kho, very tasty. Everything here is really cheap also and the waitstaff is very friendly.
They did just open up a new location, which was very much needed because it always seems to be busy no matter what time of day. They seemed to be even busier the last time we went right after their opening. They all seemed to be running around everywhere but everyone seemed to have their exact order in a very timely manner. Hopefully they have added more waitstaff because they definitely need it with the larger restaurant now.
So go try this, you will definitely enjoy, beware it does get very very busy during lunch hours though.

This place is GREAT!  I love their $3.99 lunch specials, in which you get to pick from a huge selection of entrees pictured on their wall, fried or steamed rice, your choice of soup, an egg roll or crab rangoons, and a fortune cookie.  They have red sauce, hot sauce, soy sauce, and Hoisin sauce on every table, which really helps complement the flavors of the food.  You order at the counter, sit down, and they bring you your food, which is a nice touch.  There is also an outlet next to every table by the wall, which is helpful if you have a computer, although I'm not sure if they have wi-fi.  One of my favorite Chinese places by far, and a great, quick place to go for lunch in the middle of the day!  I enjoy it every bit as much, if not more, than Panda Express, and the prices are better too!  It's just south of the Emerson and 465 exit, if you are going that way and need to stop for a meal.

I visited Eggroll No. 1 for the first time this week on my quest to try every bowl of pho available in Indianapolis.  The service was pretty good.  You place your order at the counter and then find a seat.  They bring the food out to you.  The dining area is small, so you might have to share a long table with others if you want to eat in.

The menu is mostly Chinese food but with a few Vietnamese dishes on a menu taped to the counter.  I saw others eating the Chinese food, and it didn't look like anything special.  I ordered the rare beef pho.  It came out in a huge bowl with all of the usual accompaniments.  I had read a review on Yelp saying that the broth left a "collagen" feeling on the reviewer's lips.  I was kind of looking forward to that, but didn't experience it.  Maybe it was there and I just didn't recognize it.  But regardless, it was delicious!  The price was $5.99, and I took home half the bowl.  (It always tastes even better the next day, as the flavors have had a chance to really meld together.)

I can't wait to go back and try some more of the Vietnamese dishes.

Of all that is holy this place should be at the top of the list. I have literally had dreams about this place, well one dream, but you get the idea. The pho is phenomenal! I like the spicy shrimp, pork, and rice noodle, I believe it's the #29. Loaded with Thai basil, bean sprouts, lime, and chili paste. There is no talking while eating here. I am too busy inhaling my soup. I almost think I might growl like a starving wolf if one were to try to take my pho away. Yeah, I could see it. The egg rolls are addictive. Thin, crispy, and full of flavor. Wrap in a piece of lettuce with tons of Thai basil, then dip in the sauce. AAHHH-MA-ZING! They are building a new store that will be much larger and only 2 doors down that should be open in 6 months we were told. When I leave here I feel pleasantly full and energized almost. Probably b/c I just devoured the most delicious meal in the history of deliciousness.

I went here specifically based on the reports of the awesomeness of their Pho,  and I was not disappointed. I ordered the Pho with beef balls, tendon, sliced beef and tripe. I have had Pho several other places, and this was far and away the best I have ever tasted. The broth was perfectly seasoned and flavorful, and had that bit of collagen feeling across the lips that only comes from simmering beef bones.  They provide fresh garnishes for the soup, and you can season it to taste.

I also tried the Vietnamese egg rolls and am now completely hooked on them as well.  And that dipping concoction they come with, well it's just sweet/spicy/salty goodness you have to try to appreciate.

This is the best Pho in the Midwest. The broth was so good I didn't want to spoil it by adding hoisin sauce to it. Just a squeeze of lime and plenty of veggies and I'm set. I would add siracha but I was sharing my bowl with my 2 yr old. He loved it as well. He would also say that their crab Rangoon were yummy.  The cafe sua da was yummy as well. I like that they didn't seem to mind my loud boy. Small place. Will have to take the man there next time to show him what really good pho taste like. His Metro Detroit just can't compare with any that they offer.

I always use "native diners" as a metric for judging so-called ethnic restaurants. Meaning, if a Vietnamese restaurant is filled with native Vietnamese, then chances are that it's the real deal. Egg Roll No. 1 masquerades as an outlet for Chinese fast food, but in its heart of hearts, it's a Vietnamese restaurant. The Pho is fantastic but I am obsessed with the Vietnamese egg rolls.

Not to be confused with the thicker-skinned Chinese egg rolls they sell, the Vietnamese egg rolls have a thin, crispy shell and are served with vegetables and a cup of sweet, spicy...liquid. It's too thin to be a sauce, and calling it juice is weird, but that's the best analogy I can make for the mouthfeel. Wrap the roll in a lettuce leaf, dip, and eat. Incredible.

I've never been amazed by the Chinese dishes on the menu, but I've never been disappointed, either. A solid lunch spot and a go-to for post-workout carryout.

I am so surprise there isn't that many reviews for this place.  Hands down this is the best place for PHO in Indianapolis!  Pho is a Vietnamese soup made by simmering beef bones for hours.  The broth is poured over al dente rice noodles and a good fixing of meats. When you eat a good bowl of pho, you can taste all the hard work and effort and that's exactly what I get when I devour the "train" size bowl of Pho.  I also like the "Mi Kho", egg noodles with pork and shrimp flavor with their special sauce.  Their Vietnamese egg rolls is also very good, I can proudly say they are comparable to some of the best I have tasted.

They also have a Chinese menu with great combos for like $5.  I haven't really ventured to the Chinese menu except for the Sesame Chicken(very decent btw), but a lot of my friends have and they are still coming back for it.  I also would like to add that the owner are very friendly and kind.  They seem to have a lot of regulars so they must be doing something right!

***This is a very small restaurant with limited table spaces.  Better for 1-4 groups, however, the owners will put together tables for larger groups.  It does get extremely busy during lunch and dinner.***

Go here and skip the Chinese food - go straight to a large, fragrant bowl of Pho which is the real reason you want to come here!  You can even get pho to go - but they won't let you do the raw items to go usually.

You may be asking yourself what is Pho, it's a vietnamese noodle soup that can be served with chicken, steak or tofu.  You add in your own basil, lime, noodles, duck sauce and siracha and let it all steam for a bit before digging in - I've found that this is the perfect cure for the common cold!

The atmosphere is the typical strip mall Chinese joint but you'll notice a lot of people around you aren't the typical patrons in the Beech Grove area.  There's a lot of asians here and for good reason - it's authentic Pho!

This place is great! The service is great, the prices are right, and it's ALWAYS packed. I read the other review and I don't know if he was at the same place that I was. Granted, the view isn't the greatest, but don't judge a book by it's cover. Try the vietnamese menu! You won't be sorry. But if you aren't up for it, you can't go wrong with the TWICE COOKED PORK and don't forget the HOT AND SOUR SOUP! Best in the nation! I'm serious!
