Service is just okay, some rude employees when you ask for vegetable chili that is on their soup of the day board and they yell back "we don't have chili today". Â The food is overpriced even for excellent food, which it's not. Â Wraps and sandwiches are good, but bland. Â They will require salt and pepper at home. Â All the precooked stuff looks likes it was done a few days early. Â I can't imagine them throwing out all that food daily. Â I've been there at closing time and got yelled at for trying to order something more complicated than a cheese sandwich and they had a ton of the pre cooked stuff left over. Â Anyways, if Blimpie or McDonald's breakfast won't suffice and you make money you can burn I suppose you could visit this place. Â They have a nice overpriced selection of beer, liquor and wine too. Â Parking is terrible and the lunch rush is a joke. Â They service 1 person at a time from a small corner ordering area. Â
I really wanted to like this place, but it's just okay, maybe not even okay.
Ordered bagel with bacon egg and cheese - was cold without the cheese. Â So called "famous mushroom" soup was filled 75% with flour to thicken and tasted bland Pretty poor for $5. This after waiting 30 minutes and getting order wrong twice. Â Unfriendly service and disorganized and clearly overpriced. Maybe I will opt for blimpies across the street next time for better quality and friendly service.
Review Source:The salads are good, and the lunch sandwiches are okay. Â It is rather expensive for what you get, though. Â I realize that the quality of the ingredients is supposed to be better, but at the end of the day, an egg and cheese sandwich is still an egg and cheese sandwich. Â I wouldn't get your breakfast here.
Review Source:Fairchild embodies what a good market should be. They pack a lot of good into a small space. The staff is always friendly and polite. The food and coffee are always hot and fresh. The craft beer selection, although not as vast as some of the larger chain stores in the area, rivals that of the larger chains. The great selection doesn't end with their beer, this place is full of delicious treats that you won't find at most other places. One example would be the fine cheeses they offer from probably my favorite French restaurant in NYC, Artisinal. Â It takes the right mix of things to keep me completely satisfied and this place offers that mix with ease. Â Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
Review Source:As it had been noted, this place is a bit pricey but very good. The chef puts a lot of heart into her dishes and it absolutely shows in the food. They recently started offering refrigerated meals to go which was great for me since I could buy a couple and have dinner for a few nights. My one, small complaint is that they shut off the grill a bit early. However, overall, a great place.
Review Source:I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! Â The ambiance is great. Â The food is excellent, freshly made (even the bread), and just plain old tasty. Â If you go during lunch, be prepared for a little wait on line and for a table, but it is well worth it. Â I always request that the sandwichs are made hot in the Panini press and I haven't been disappointed, otherwise assume it is cold. Enjoy!
Review Source:This is a nice place to eat.  Their sandwiches and food from the grill are delicious but their food from the deli case are lacking.  I don't know why they can't cook their chicken tenders in  from their grill section.  They precook them and store them in the deli case which is refrigerated.  One time I ordered them and when I was served them they were just luke warm and extremely dry.
They have a nice selection of drinks and an amazing wine section. Â They also have unique gifts for sale which I like looking to see what they have new while I wait for my food.
The behind the counter service could use improvement. Â Most of the time the person who it making my order seems as though they would want to be anywhere else and doing anything that isn't getting my food together. They just come off with attitude. Â Occasionally when I do go in I get one of the two people who are always smiling and friendly. Â I always hope that one of them is there when decide to eat at Fairchild's.
I ordered six sandwiches to pick up and called an hour ahead. Â Was told they were busy and they'd try to have it ready. Â When I got there to pick it up there were three people in various places behind a large counter and one other customer. Â I moved to two places where people were working and no one helped me. Â I watched the other customer go to one end of the counter to pay for her coffee so I followed her and stood behind her. Â After she paid the woman behind the counter walked away. Â A few minutes later she came back and just looked at me so I said I was there to pick up an order. Â About 5 minutes later it was done. Â I just felt like a second class citizen or something. Â The food was good though absolutely no extras and I would say the portion size was very small for the prices. Â I feel like I can find food equal to or better quality with far more pleasant service. Â Really disappointing.
Review Source:This is a great little neighborhood store.  The sandwiches are great.  The meats are good.  But, unfortunately, you really do pay extra for the convenience.  I think I spent about $14 on a sandwich, a little thing of macaroni salad and a drink.  Based on the prices, I would have to call this  place UnFairChild's Market.  :P  No, in all fairness, they're okay.  I suppose the quality is there to warrant the price.  Three stars, coulda been four, but I've been given those out a little too frequently, gotta tighten up on that.
Review Source:Food is decent, but more often than not the order is screwed up. When you order the pulled pork, expect to get large chunks of pork, not the real deal. Â I called and asked what the story was after the second time it happened, thinking they'd changed the recipe or something. Whoever I spoke with said that the person who pulls the pork simply didn't do it right, and was glad to know of the problem. Next week I ordered the pulled pork again and received again just large chunks of pork - not "pulled." Â Disturbing that they are so un concerned with getting right the food that leaves their kitchen. I've been burned for the last time.
Review Source:This Roseland institution gets pretty busy at lunch for all of the obvious reasons. Â Now that they expanded a few years ago you can order your sandwich and sit there to eat it. Â The quality meats and their rye always goes down so good. Â I love having projects in the area just to look forward to lunch there. Â
The basic bologna and cheese is as good as their sloppy joes and their creations. Â There is something for everybody.
I frequent Fairchild's Market on a weekly basis. Â The food is good (not great), but can be inconsistent. Â The wine selection is fantastic (so is Diane, the store's wine expert), and they have nice novelty gifts. Â HOWEVER, my BIG problem is with the "behind the counter staff" and this is what is reflected in my rating. Â
I find everyone behind the counter to be unfriendly, inattentive and, quite honestly, rude. Â They act as though they could care less about their customer. Â I've been in the store even when is wasn't busy (In fact, I was the ONLY customer) and there were FIVE people behind the counter. Â Not one person acknowledged me or asked if they could take my order. Â They also consistently get orders wrong. Â Another reflection of their apathetic attitude. Â I'm sorry to say this is not a one time experience. Â It's consistent. Â And I can see from the other reviews that I'm not the only one with this experience.
I sincerely hope someone from Fairchild's reads my review because I have a news flash for them..... the economy stinks and many small businesses are treading water. Â I can go elsewhere and pay far less then $!0 for a sandwich AND be met with a smile. Â Wise up Fairchild's.
I have come here a few times now to have lunch with my husband when he works in the Roseland area. The place has decent food and a selection that seems to change frequently. I have tried the Teriyaki chicken, tuna wraps, and a slice of zucchini pie. Everything had a decent taste and you could tell it was cooked on the site, however, my two main issues with this place are first the service from the people behind the counter. The owner appears present and is a middle aged man who treats customers appropriately, but the teenagers who work behind the counter often rub me the wrong way here. I take it that they may be a little arrogant, but they also don't really listen or pay attention to orders. This has happened almost every time now, where I have ordered something and waited, just to have one of them ask me what I wanted again 10 minutes later. Another issue with the younger employees is their rushing techniques to get the food out to you. This was the second time that I ordered something that was not properly heated and still cold. My Zucchini pie was as cold as it had been in the fridge, and my Swiss melted wrap was not melted because it was simply not heated up enough. I will most likely give this place another shot, but I have experienced much better food and service in the area.
Review Source:My friend, her daughter, and I decided to come here during the week at lunch time. Probably not the best time to go because it was a little crazy. Thankfully, we found seating. It's really such a cute little place to have lunch with friends. It may have been crowded, but it wasn't noisy, which made conversation pleasant. Our food was good, the menu has many options, and although I didn't get a chance to look, the wine selection seemed pretty vast!
My biggest complaint was that hardly anything was labeled, so we had no direction. I didn't realize there was iced coffee until another customer pointed it out to me. My friend noticed too when she was ordering, that nothing was labeled, which stopped her from buying certain things. The thing that really made me mad though was that I didn't know where to put my tray after I was done, so I asked one of the workers behind the counter to please take it from me. He responded with a very unenthusiastic, "I guueeesss" like IT WASN'T HIS JOB. Not a very happy way to end our lunch. He could have at least told me where to put it, since nothing was marked.
Other than that, it was a nice place. Hopefully, you won't run into the same situation...
We tried this spot last Saturday afternoon for lunch. Â It's a casual place with old fashioned deli-style sandwiches. Â I got a turkey and roast beef sandwich with roasted peppers and basil on rye. Â It was good. Â They do have paninis and salads, so making the decision for a simple sandwich wasn't easy given all the appealing choices! Â My husband also got a their style "sloppy joe" sandwich. Â I had a bite and give that thumbs up too, although we both agreed it would've been better heated up.
One side of the store is filled with wine bottles for sale. Â There are dessert treats like chocolate lollipops and kitchen/eatery goods that make nice gifts. Â I liked the atmosphere because it isn't fully a traditional deli-style sit down spot, which usually amount to cold gray or brown colored plastic booths. Â This is where I added an extra star. Â The food was a 3 but the atmosphere bumped it up a notch because it felt more like eating in a country kitchen than in a deli. Â Â
We bought their signature chocolate chip cookie on the way out for the ride home. Â Different than what I bake but very tasty.
What a find. This place is fantastic. Exceptional gourmet deli with a wide selection of sandwichs, wraps etc. and even Sloppy Joe's. Â Fast, very friendly service. To top that they also have a great artisan wine selection. If you are near you should check it out. You will want to go back for sure.
Review Source:I like this place and its one of the better places to eat around the area with seating inside and outside (in season). Â Parking is in the back and can be challenging around lunchtime but manageable and worth it. Â The menu is extensive and everything is customizable. The presentation is pleasant, if just a sandwich or a catering platter, and they deliver. I place corporate orders here frequently since we have a corporate account. I have always been pleased with this place and if you ever have any complaints, they are always very attentive. They have wine and trinkets which can make convenient impromptu gift especially for coworkers. Â I definitely compare other deli places to Fairchilds because it sets a high bar.
