I have to open this review on a down note, despite wanting to love this place from the reviews: I encountered the worst service I've ever had from the very moment I walked in the door. The food, with the exception of the calamari, wasn't much better.
I made a reservation yesterday for tonight, wanting to surprise my fiance with a good Italian dinner for his birthday. It didn't start well; the hostess seemed very annoyed when we came in, wearing a frown on her face that got even worse when she looked up and saw us. She asked us whether we wanted to sit in the dining room or the more informal side room , and when we indicated the formal room and said we had a reservation, she asked us where we wanted to sit, giving us an option of a booth or a table. I indicated the booth, and she just stood there for about a minute, doing nothing, but seemed to indicate we should seat ourselves, despite the fact I couldn't even see the open booth we were talking about. We started to walk over there and a younger girl- who seemed to be helping with table breakdowns- grabbed menus and ran them to the hostess, who hadn't even bothered to grab them despite the fact she'd been standing next to them when we walked in.
We brought our own bottle of wine, as it's a BYOB, and served ourselves. About 10 minutes later, a waitress, who was talking way too much and kept calling us "kids" despite the fact I'm almost 30 and it was my fiance's 23rd birthday, came and took our appetizer order. She came back in 5 minutes to say they were out of the bread they usually serve and that the appetizer would be out shortly, and then took our food orders. She went over to the table next to us and proceeded to talk to them for about 15 minutes about her personal problems with her 21 year old son and about how stressful her day at work had been. Almost immediately after, the hostess walked by and loudly complained to the couple about how she had a  terrible day and couldn't wait for the restaurant to close.
About 10 minutes after that (so 30 so far), the waitress brought out my fiance's appetizer. She did not bring the salad I asked for with the house made Italian dressing I was looking forward to, and I never saw the salad all evening. After another 30 minute wait, the entrees came out. I was going to ask her about the salad when she brought out the food, but she asked us if we wanted crushed pepper or shredded cheese and promptly disappeared before I could ask her about it.
To the credit of the chef there, my fiance said his calamari appetizer was perfectly cooked, and the presentation and amount of food were amazing. He also very much liked his lasagna. Unfortunately, I didn't fare so well; perfectly cooked pasta was ruined by sitting out too long, either because the waitress wasn't paying attention or because it was cooked too long before the rest of the food, and it was ice cold. The marina sauce, which was delicious, was lukewarm and didn't help the pasta any at that temperature.
The filet I ordered was an affront to the animal that died for it. I ordered it rare, but the center was still purple, cold, and raw. It had a marinade that was well seasoned for the most part, but had a touch too much salt.
I would have loved to have sent it back to be warmed up a tad more, but the waitress didn't show back up until 25 minutes later when, irritated, I asked the manager for the bill and the leftovers to be wrapped. The waitress came and apologized to the next table for the poor service- but not us- and left the bill on our table. Â She picked it up and handed the receipt/final slip to my fiance while he was on the way back from the bathroom, which HE then brought to the table, despite it being my card.
It was a letdown of a night, and I think with a little tweaking to the preparation of the food and the timing of it, it would be fantastic. The service, however, needs to come a long way; based on that alone, we will certainly not be going back to the business, and I would recommend others be wary of it as well.
Until I can actually afford a trip to Italy, Felix's will do quite nicely. Â The food is amazing, handcrafted and authentic. Â The menu is not overwhelming, but offers plenty of choices. Â The waitstaff does not have the same professional polish that you might find in other restaurants, but they are more than sincere. Â From the moment we walked in, they were friendly. We were greeted by a young kid that noticed our bottle of wine, and asked us if we needed a corkscrew and promptly brought over two glasses. (Felix's is BYOB). Â The salad was fresh and crisp, with a nice assortment of fresh veggies, the tortellini soup was busting with handmade, delicious tortellini. Â The hot sausage with homemade "Mama's pasta" (handmade daily) was outstanding. Â My husband had the grilled ribeye with vegetables, and it was perfect. Â Their sauce is some of the best I have ever tasted.
Review Source:We found it! Â When we moved to Springfield about 8 years ago the pizza place around the corner from us made great pizza. Sadly, the place changed hands about a year later and we have been looking for its equal ever since. Â Felix's is it. Their pizza is made with excellent ingredients, no rubbery mozzarella. It is browned and crispy on the bottom, neither too thick nor too thin.
Felix's has two dining rooms, the larger one is more formal, the smaller one is brightly lit with a TV showing sports. Choose according to your mood.
The wait-staff is genuine, friendly and attentive. Multiple generations of the owner-family have been present at each visit keeping an eye on things and making sure  we felt welcome. (We did.)
Felix's encourages customers to bring their own beverages. This lets us bring our favorites and keeps the cost down. Â
Try it!
What a pleasant surprise...
I found Felix's via Yelp and was somewhat skeptical as I'd never heard of it. Â
There was a function taking place so the parking lot was full but we were able to park on the street.
My rating for this restaurant is set firmly in the mindset that I'm reviewing a small, family run Italian restaurant.
With that said, here are some of the things you won't find at Felix's:
1. Professional wait-staff - The folks at Felix's are friendly and the service is attentive. Â They don't have polished and scripted responses ready.
2. Alcohol - It's BYOB, so bring something with you.
3. Kid's menus - They'll make you pretty much anything you want for the kids (in kid-sized portions), but you won't find any of it on a neatly organized kid's menu.
What you will find is absolutely terrific & authentic Italian food in a charming atmosphere.
I had the veal marsala and the wife had the shrimp & risotto dish. Â Both of us cleared our plates. Â The homemade pasta was delicious as well. Â The kids had noodles and a personal pizza and neither had any complaints.
We finished the meal with espresso and a slice of their peanut butter pie.
I will definitely be visiting Felix's again as the quality of the food for the price was unbeatable.
We went Valentine's night without reservations. Since they were open as we drove by and we had been there once before by we decided to stop.
We arrived and were greeted after a min by a waitress who said she would be right back. There were several empty tables a large party of about 7 (with a few children) but only 3 wait staff feverishly delivering food and drinks and people were picking up take out orders. If you haven't been here there are 2 rooms. A formal dining room with cloth covered tables and center pieces and a less formal room with smaller tables. A waiter came and asked us where we would like to sit. He was a very nice older gentleman who had waited on us the last time we were there. We were seated and a waitress came by and said she would be right back, a few min later another waitress came with water and menus. We had to wait a little while, but you could see they were busy.
There was live music played by a wandering guitarist and accordion player. So we watched and listened. (They have live music like this on Fri & Sat)
The waitress came back to say she would just be another min. She returned and took our order and re-filled our water glasses. We ordered the country bread which came right away with chunks of garlic  and dripping cheese nice and hot. The second waitress arrived and tried to take our order not realizing it had been taken. They were trying their best. The waiter stopped by and explained that they weren't expecting to get as many people as they had tonight and that a waitress, buss boy and cook had all called out and they weren't able to replace them in time for dinner.
To start, I got salad and the other 2 in my party got tortellini soup, standard crisp salad very fresh, the soup was homemade and my honey raved about his. Then our dinner arrived and it was well worth the wait! I had heavenly, angel hair pasta with grilled chicken in a marinara sauce, my other half ordered a meat personal sized pizza which he said was great, our 17 year old ordered a cold-cut calzone, and when he was almost completely done complained it was too salty.
The portions were huge (I took half of mine home) the boys finished theirs except one slice of pizza.
We were visited by (I believe) the owner as she came right out of the kitchen. She said she hoped we had enjoyed the dinner, but was sorry it had taken so long since they were short staffed and they cook everything to order.
My other half & I enjoyed it tremendously even with the wait and will return.
