Had the crawfish étouffée tonight while here on business for $18. Overall it was good but not great. Don't get me wrong, I would order it again its just that I am used to South Louisiana cooking and the roux looked and tasted like it came out of a can. I really like the decor of this place...upscale sports bar with restaurant. I recommend you come here.
Review Source:First time there, wont be the last.
Thursday night at 7, good crowd, but did not have to wait. Once we were seated we did have to wait quite some time before anyone waited on us, that is my only complaint.
Our waiter brought out our Appetizer of Alligator and he stated  I am not happy with that portion I will get you another order, and he did, no charge..Nice !.
I had the Orleans Pasta, very tasty, we also had sushi and salads. Everyone was happy with their meal and the service.
It was not cheap by any means, but will probably return in the future.
Definitely over priced - service is slow. My friend had to ask for each refill of drink.
Food was good. I love catfish. catfish bengiets apps were execellent. Â I ordered two sushi rolls that came to $20. Â
I don't know that we will go there as a destination again, anytime soon, but not too bad to stop in for a bite if in the area.
This location is pretty cool, and the building looks like it was formerly some kind of industrial textile warehouse or something..... Â Although I was informed it was built as a restaurant....
I was in the mood for Cajun food, so what did I order??  Well, Crawfish étouffée of course!!  What did I get??  I think it was actually 'green pepper étouffée' with a guest appearance by a trio of crawfish....  Not good actually.....  The flavor wasn't even that spicy, so I'm not sure if having a fair amount of crawfish on the plate would have helped.... Maybe I should have tried Jambalaya?? Â
I was a bit disappointed, but I got over it. Â I mean, I can just fly to Louisiana anytime I want for GOOD Cajun food right?? Â Right.
Came here for an early lunch on a Saturday and the place was basically empty. Not complaining though! Love the ambience and decor of the place- very laid-back and Americana-esque. It's the kind of place that instantly lifts your mood the moment you walk in.
We started off with an order of their giant onion rings. Crispy, golden brown and fried to perfection with some awesome dipping sauce- I cannot recommend these enough! My BF and I ordered the Shrimp & Chicken Jambalaya and the Pasta Orleans. BF had to run out for about 15 mins in the middle of the meal and our server was kind enough to hold off on our order being prepared so that BF wouldn't have to come back to a cold meal. The Jambalaya was full of tender chunks of meat and seafood and extra spicy- just as we had ordered. Pasta Orleans provided a nice creamy balance to the heat of the jambalaya.
Their menu is extensive- would definitely return to try more of it out!
Visited here for the first time and I was really excited about the menu (I had looked it up online prior) as I love cajun style food.  Boy was I disappointed.  We ordered quite a few different appetizers including the Alligator and  Calamari.  Both seemed like they were made from a GFS  bag.  Absolutely nothing special about either.  I ordered the Crawfish etouffee and my wife ordered the filet and lobster.  The crawfish dish was ok but here filet and lobster just plain stunk.  For $30 you'd think it would be good but not so much.  About the only thing about the food that I would say was worth wile was the sushi.  It was really good but kinda strange to have it at a New Orleans themed restaurant.  To top things off the service was horrible to.  The drinks were watered down as well.  I won't be back.  There are plenty of other places in this area that are much better for the same price.
Review Source:Great food and great service!
We arrived at prime dinner time on a Saturday night with a group of 10. Â We expected the wait to be ridiculous and at first we were greeted with looks like, "Yikes, that's going to be tough" on the hostess' faces. Â But we were seated right away! Â
Danielle was our server and she was prompt, very helpful, and very friendly. Â Our food was delicious. Â I started off with a crawfish boil that had good flavor but was heavily covered in spice. Â My hands were a mess after but don't worry, there are sinks all over the restaurant to wash your hands. Â Weird, but convenient. Â I had the catfish atchafalaya as my entree. Â It came with soup or salad and I chose a cup of clam chowder. Â It was more chowder than clam and I only ate half of it. Â My entree was delicious--a large amount of crawfish in the etouffee topping and it had great creole flavor. Â Between that and the asparagus and baked potato sides I had to take half of it home.
I can't wait to return to Fishbones soon. Â The atmosphere seemed fun and a great place to watch a big game.
The food isn't good and it is over-priced. Â They don't really have anything for less than $10, even their burgers are expensive. Â Their steaks are horrible and they have a ton of rosemary seasoning that over-powers the flavor of the meat. Â Their Muscles Casino is absolutely horrible. Â The crawfish and alligator bites are just ok, and their sushi is down right awful.
They do have a great patio in the summer time, and their drinks aren't bad. Â The entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights is generally pretty decent, and it's not a bad place to watch a game, just don't come hungry.
Great place for after work. Â Good bands bring in the locals. Food has always been excellent. Â I am usually at the sushi bar but have attended office functions and holiday parties in the private rooms available for such. Â The staff has been very helpful and accommodating. Â Â If you can not get downtown for the weekend, this is the next best place to hang out.
Review Source:I often come here with coworkers after a long, exhausting day of work. We love to come and have drinks and enjoy the delicious food!
Full bar and wine list. We ordered some of the signature drinks from the menu one night and they tasted like drain cleaner. I would just stick with vodka cranberry.
As for appetizers, you must try the catfish bites! They are heaven on earth. It comes with a spicy mustard dipping sauce that is perfect. The calamari is good too!
Try the lettuce wedge salad if you are a bleu cheese fan...even if you are not, order it with ranch, it is just wonderful.
My coworkers love the sushi there. The sushi menu is quite large. They are always happy with the results...I am not to big of a sushi fan.
Service is average...not bad, but average.
This is our go-to hangout after work, and I can't wait to go here and have some more laughs with my work crew!
Solid place. Â I've never been to this particular Fishbone's, having only been to the ones downtown and the other over by work.
- Stella and Fat Tire on tap. Â Always an immediate plus.
- The place is huge. Â The bar area is enormous, and has a ton of seating. Â Outdoor patio if you want to head that way. Â Private room if you want to book an event there. Â
- The crowd...it's a mixed bag. Â There's enough of a crowd of "normal" people that it's technically possible to avoid intermingling with the dbag / preppy / "I'm a boater" / hipster glasses / "I'm dressed for a NYC nightclub even though I'm in St Clair Shores" crowds. Â
Wow, I'm judgmental, huh? Â Oh well, good for me!
- Had a few great, random conversations with people, which is always also a plus.
- There was a band there. Â While they were at least entertaining, someone needs to explain the concept of "understand your limits" when it comes to music and vocals. Â "Pretty Young Thing (PYT)" almost made my ears bleed.
- While I didn't personally get anything to eat there (please reference: "Stella and Fat Tire on tap", and who wants to mess with that?!), I did talk with a few people who had, and they were extremely complimentary. Â Nobody had anything bad to say at all.
- The baseball game(s) were on the big screens, and so it's not a bad place to catch a game or two.
I really like Fishbones and this is another great location. It's a pretty big place and and has the same feel as the one in Greektown. The menu is full of different options and everything I have tried has been pretty good. They have a very good sushi menu and an okay selection of beers.
We also came here for brunch this past Mothers Day and they did a great job. The selections at the buffet were great and I was able to try many different things. Overall I would recommend this place for a nice night out for dinner and a few cocktails with friends.
This is my preferred place to go to when I go out for the night in SCS. I enjoy the atmosphere during the summer months because of the nice big outdoor patio. There is a big mix of age groups here which I always find entertaining...from the douchey, preppy frat boys, to desperate cougars looking to pick up anyone who looks their way, I am always finding something to laugh at. I would rather not come here on a Friday night and sit inside because of the band that plays there. They play so loud you can barely hear yourself talk to your group.
The food, not always amazing, is a bit pricey, which is expected. I seem to be always drawn to their spinach salad. It is probably one of my favorites. The bartenders also make strong drinks which are worth your money.
Went there after boating this past Saturday evening. Â Fishbones has always had a nice environment and we have been there plenty of times for the bar but this is the first time I have eaten dinner there. Â
Ordered the Spider Roll- Pricey $13.50 especially for a non-sushi place and lets just say that THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER SPIT OUT SUSHI INTO MY NAPKIN. Â The deep fried crab was SO BURNT it was gross! Â Would have sent this back but already sent back asparagus (side dish) since it was so limp and yellow/brown- barely green. Â
Go for the bar & the service but don't pay the increased "we are right by the water so it costs more" food prices.
Restaurant Week Disappointment. Â Not that I was expecting much since I have eaten food from the menu before from here, but I figured restaurant week Fishbones would want to show off what they have to offer. Â
To their defense, this was our 3rd choice, the other 2 restaurants were packed so we officially settled for Fishbones, and settled we did. Â The food from the appetizers to the desert were not good and all tasted as if purchased from Casco, heated up and served. Â
This review is not to take away from the fact this is the best patio in the Shores, and also the Sushi has always been good. There is just something overly disappointing about their other food, never been impressive and I will never know if this changes because I will never again eat anything here other than sushi.
I'm a fan of Fishbone's, both this location and the one downtown, because of their seafood gumbo. At $5/$7 for a cup/bowl, it's a filling lunch entree that is easy on the wallet.
I visited the SCS location for the first time on Tuesday, 5/29 and it was a nice experience. The weather cooperated, so we were able to sit on the patio. (I would have preferred it be on the water because it is SCS, after all, but it was nice.) I had the spicy tuna roll in addition to the soup, and it was good. Standard sushi from a non-sushi restaurant, but decent prices - it was $5.75 for the roll. Â
I can't comment on the entrees because I've never bought more than sushi and soup from here; for their prices, I prefer to go to a restaurant where I feel I can wear a dress and heels and not be at a "meat market." Overall, it was a great place to meet friends for drinks and a light dinner.
I really don't like feeling like I'm at a frat party when I'm at a bar. The kind of atmosphere where everyone is trying too hard, know what I mean? While not necessarily the fault of Fishbone's, I really hate the douchy croud that I always feel like I'm encountering whenever I'm there-- not everyone mind you, but a good 75% of the patrons are tools. The service is awful here (managers and owners included). The food and sushi are good, I will give them that, but really, Fishbone's sucks.
Maybe I'm bitter because last night it reeked of propane gas on the patio. Or maybe it's because my husband's White Russian came out as a vodka, gin and cream (gin instead of Kaluha? Yuck). Maybe it's because I'm irritated that the name of the restaurant makes no sense (Fishbone's, like in the possesive sense? Â The place is called "Fishbone is"?) It could be that it doesn't know if it wants to be fine dining or a sports bar. Or maybe it's simply because I don't like being around tools. Either way, I don't like this place, and if it wasn't for my eastside friends going here for dinner, I would never go back.
There are so many better places out there that don't try so hard to be hip.
This review is for sushi and drinks only.
Mmmm sushi, anytime anywhere and Fishbones is ok with me. We ordered 4 different sushi rolls, dragon, spider, godzilla, and 1 other. All were very very good with fresh fish and other ingredients. The spider was the standout with some fried softshell crab in it. Soooo tasty. Â I also ordered a sea urchin piece of sushi. YUCKY, that's just my taste buds, Â other people loved it.
I ordered 1/2 dz oysters as a app. Not bad but whoever was doing the shucking left a lot of shell shards under the oyster, good thing i wasn't just slurping them down. -1 star
The only other complaint was $10.50 for a margarita, seemed a lot pricey for a little drink. -1 star.
Otherwise it was a fun night, service was good and the place was spotless.
20 some years ago the downtown location was one of my favorites. Â The HOT Cajun food, Jambalaya, Cat Fish, cool decor, the beads, Â dozen different hot sauces on each table, the bloody mary, etc. etc.
The decor at this place is cool too. Â Not as cool as downtown was (or used to be) Â I had mixed feelings about Fishbones moving close to me. Â On the one hand it was close! Â Cool! Â On the other hand, it's in an area where I might see someone I knew in high school. Â "Oh, you're not married yet, no kids and you wear armor? Â Cool. Not."
Story of my life. Â Bring my hopes in dreams within arms reach and then make me suffer. Â Â Fishbones Rhythm Cafe is a New Orleans themed restaurant right? Â Wrong!!!! Â It used to be. Â
Now they have sushi. Â It's very good sushi I might add but WTH! Where is the cajun? Â I ordered 2 fish dishes there in the past few years. Â 1. A red snapper. Â Was is blackened? Â No, it came broiled. Â BORING! Â 2. I got Catfish Etoufee, was it good? Â No BORING! Â I got the Jambalya once and it was not as memorable as downtown. Â Something happened to the food. Â
The food apparently doesn't matter. Â People love this place to hang out, they have a great outside area in the summer, I wish I was younger I would hang here just for the atmostphere. Â But forshame! Â What have you done to the food! Â I do believe they are not the same owners as 20 yrs ago.
3.5 Stars for being a great place to hang out for drinks and sushi for other people to enjoy what I used to love for what it is now not.
Why would the bar tables within the bar area not be subject to the same happy hour pricing as the bar itself? The bar tables are literally within 3-4 feet of the bar and they are not in the general dining area at all, yet the people unlucky enough to have to sit there when the bar is full cannot get the same happy hour specials as the people they can reach out and touch at the bar. Shame on you Fishbones... I like this place and go to it often since I can walk to it, but that kind of thinking is just ridiculous. It makes people have to swarm the limited seats at the bar during "happy" hour, and the rest get to be outcasts who get to view the "privileged". I've talked with the staff and know the place is hurting for business, and this kind of policy doesn't help. I hope a manager or owner type reads this and makes the proper adjustment.
That being said, the decor is cool, the staff is friendly and professional, and the food is good. The sushi is pretty decent, but pricey. Again, manager types, why not make some good specials and get Michiganders, who are traditionally leery of raw fish, on board with something new? Instead they keep it expensive and probably have to throw out a lot of expiring product. On the plus side, the menu is big and has something everyone can enjoy. There are many big and clear tv's all around the bar, and it's a good place to watch a Tigers or Wings game. Especially if you get a seat at the bar... A few adjustments and this place could really be a first-choice venue, but until then I will just try to get there early for happy hour, and let the rest "eat cake".
3 stars in Detroit? Â Whodathunkit? Â I didn't think the Dirty D would have anything higher than two stars.
Really, the sushi here is very subpar, which is to be expected from a restaurant that doesnt specialize in sushi. Â If you eat sushi often, don't bother ordering.
The atmosphere is decent, and then you realize you're near the Dirty, so you just become depressed. Â
I would just live in Ann Arbor and commute. Â They have more culture and better restaurants, albeit a terrible school in U of M. Â GO GREEN!
Their sushi is decent. Â Not the best I've had, but pretty good. Â Dragon Roll is my favorite. Â Growing up in St. Clair Shores, I find that this place is like a high school reuinion for me (which usually is a "con" in my book). Â This is definitely a spot for people who cruise the Nautical Mile (ha) to gather. Â At night, there is live music and a young crowd, people get done up in their club/bar clothes. Â Drinks are overpriced, but not as excessively as I have seen other places.
Still, I gotta say.  One or two nights a summer, when I'm back around the ol' hometown, I do love stopping up here and grabbing a drink on their patio.  The patio is the thing that always draws me in.  A huge circle bar outside, a firepit (get there early cause the seats around that go fast), can smell the fresh water air off of Lake St. Clair....it's just usually a good night.  Even if i'm running into a few folks I haven't seen since graduation  (and liked it that way) and paying a little extra per drink than I would elsewhere.  I even don't mind getting a little more dressed up (I am a dive bar kind of gal, so it's nice to do something different now and then). Â
If you're around, and it's summer, stop by. Â But if you don't make it here, don't feel all that bad about it either. Â :)
They have some great Sushi, I can't lie about that. But I just feel like at night it turns into a place where people think they are going to a classy place, but it's really not.
EDIT: As time goes on, I love this place more and more. It's a great atmosphere. Good people. Good food. What more can I ask?
I've been wanting to go back to Fishbones ~but~ was waiting for Michigan to get it's Smoking Ban in place (sorry - cigarettes and food not a turn-on for me). Â We made it back last Friday ... And they treated us great!!!
It was beautiful weather - we tried to find a spot on the patio (for 8 folks) .. alas - no room, so, they sent us inside. Â As we were preparing to order - they hunted us down to tell they found room outside and gently moved us. Â Not many restaurants would do that ... Thank you Fishbones!
Customer service continued to be great - happy, patient waitress - attentive bussers - the service (alone) would have made for a good experience.
But, then there's the Sushi. Â I'd forgotten how good Sushi can be when it's freshly prepared by folks who understand and care. Â (Thank you, Mike!). Â People in our party who have never liked (tried) sushi now "get it". Â Good stuff!
All in all ... a magical night. Â My friends and I thank you, Fishbones! Â 5 Stars for you!
If you just want a meal and some drinks and a decent atmosphere this is the place to be.
Granted before I really knew what good sushi was I thought Fishbones had GREAT sushi. Now I just think it's ok. See my reviews for my favs.
The drinks are a bit high priced but still ok. Ive had several really great martinis there.
The fishbones in SCS has one really great thing... The patio. Its one of the nicer comfy patios Ive been too. They have really nice tables and chairs no plastic picnic table stuff like most places have.
Id give this place more stars if the collasal shrimp was really collasal and the cajun food was really cajun and not just a spicy tomato sauce with rice.
I think they need to trim back the menu and go back to what they are known for and thats new orleans style cuisine. Leave the sushi and all that other stuff to the rest of the nauticl mile.
We stopped in for a bite before heading down town. Like I wrote in my original review, I have no problem with the food, although a bit pricey IMO.
I was with a party of six, the hostess sat us at a table that had an air duct right above it. The area is to the left as you enter the restaurant, there are tables setup along the windows. Now it might not be all that bad in the summer, but last night that duct was blowing some cold air, I froze my ass off. My Steak went from Hot...to arctic in a matter of minutes.
Beware of the air vent!
I spent the better part of a year hanging out every weekend at Fishbones. I never truly thought it was as cool a place as its reputation suggested. But there never seemed to be a lack of ladies and the hunter in me said "go. Fishbones. NOW".
The food is over priced, the drinks are generic and over priced, and the crowd is plastic. The sushi is actually pretty great, and is the only reason this place got 2 stars from me.
Every now and then I get dragged abck to Fishbones and each time I hate it more and more. It is a meat market. A place to be and be seen... worthless.
Fishbones used to be known for one thing, Cajun food. Â They were the best in metro Detroit for it and should have stuck to that. Â Now they have a menu that is 8 pages long with Japanese, American, Italian and Cajun food. Â Lost in that is the quality of what they once knew how to do best.
I was visiting from Chicago for the Thanksgiving weekend and decided to go out with my brother for a meal here. Â Having not visited in a few years I was excited for some great Cajun cooking. Â I was immediately shocked by 2 things, the prices and the menu size. Â I already mentioned the vastness of the menu but it is the prices that are outrageous. Â A dragon roll for $14.50? Â At a Cajun restaurant? Â The best sushi bars with the highest quality fish in Chicago never top $13.
We decided to start with mussels. Â Anyone who has had mussels knows that one of the best things is the garlic sauce they soak in. Â You mop up this mixture with the bread on the table. Â Not so at Fishbones. Â The mussels come in a metal beer bottle better suited for Rolling Rock. Â At the bottom of the bucket was a scant amount of liquid. Â Good thing though because the mussels were horrendous. Â You know when you smell something so god-awful you can taste it? Â Imagine the flavor you get from smelling the elephant cage at the zoo. Â That's how these mussels tasted. Â Good thing I got some sand in there too. Â I'd have been better off opening my mouth in the Detroit River.
Not to be deterred we ordered dinner. Â Our soup and salad came promptly and were good. Â But a half hour plus went by without our dinner. Â When my catfish arrived it was clearly microwaved. Â Nice way to ruin a $18 entree. Â The etouffe on top was tasty but the fish underneath was sub-par. Â The broccoli side - that's where the garlic sauce went! Â Found my broccoli doused in it. Â I felt like I was eating a clove.
In fairness, our waitress was pleasant and my brother's red snapper dish was well prepared and he was pleased. Â Mine went back and I went home hungry and wildly disappointed. Â Thankfully the manager comped my entree and the mussels. Â But as any diner will attest, I'd have gladly paid the price for a good experience with good food.
Macomb County is no stranger to the current tough economic conditions. Â If you are going to charge Chicago prices for your meals those meals had better be spot on. Â This was a truly bad experience and until they return to a smaller menu focusing on what made them famous, I will be surprised to see Fishbones last. Â Of course as a sports bar it looked to be busy but few were dining and now I know why. Â
Please, please, please, return to your roots and get it right again.
I'm torn between 3 and four stars. I would give 3.5 if I could.
Sushi is very good.
Regular menu is hit or miss.
Service is also hit or miss.
They have live entertainment (very cool).
The patio has wrought iron furniture instead of plastic (awesome)
It gets very loud and crowded (which can be good or bad depending on what you're up to)
I like Fishbones a lot. I go there quite regularly. My boyfriend doesn't eat sushi and it's one of the few places around that has sushi and non-Japanese fare. That said, the food and service are hit or miss.
My Boyfriend once had a steak that should have been sent back only he NEVER sends food back. It was tasteless and soggy. Yet, he has had other steaks there that were great. We just went a few days ago and he had a new menu item, Lamb Kafta Sandwich and it was actually pretty good - they have good fries too.
It gets very busy in there later in the week and on weekends. If you find yourself there on a date I suggest you sit on the patio or find another place. You literally cannot hear the other people at your table when the bar is packed and the band is playing. If you're up for a party but don't want to go to a nightclub this is a good choice.
Honestly the inconsistency with the food and service is annoying, I mean when you go out you want to know what to expect - especially with their prices (high). Luckily it's good about 75% of the time (sushi is good 90% of the time) and my boyfriend deals with it just so I can get my sushi fix.
All the smart-aleckedness aside...
I actually like this place. Â They have a great Sunday brunch and they have some good food...
However what makes this place great is their night crowd. Â The people tend to be very friendly and good looking and there is a good mix of people in their twenties and thirties. Â In summertime they have a great patio and the bartenders are friendly. Â And they even have saganaki.
My parents love this place. Â Fishbone's is a pretty solid restaurant. They have some unique items like the alligator bites and "Bayou Caviar." The Jambalaya is pretty good and the sushi is as well.
The service has always been good, and the restaurant has a nice layout. The patio is great. I hear the breakfast buffet is pretty good, but I haven't been.
You don't have a lot of choices when it comes to Cajun in Metro-Detroit, Fishbone's is okay, but try Howie's on the Bayou in Ferndale if this place is a little too commercial for you.
Here is the breakdown:
* Wait staff: Good.
* Drink Menu: Full bar
* Menu: Cajun, American, Sushi
* Parking: Â A lot in back and valet
* Dress: Casual
Fishbones started out as a Cajun fish restaurant, but now has food for almost every palette. Chicken, ribs, seafood, steak, gumbo...you name it. This location has a full service bar on the patio and a lot of seating during good weather. They have live bands come up and preform on weekends.
The food is slightly above average and probably marked up a bit. Don't let this discourage you. The food is still good and the menu is great for big groups that can't settle on one kind of meal.
Fishbones is a restaurants that people go out together. This location is right on the water's edge and can be packed on weekends. The food and entertainment are geared towards adults, so leave the kids at home. Its a great night out for a date or for an after work drink.
I'm not that jazzed on their food, though the saganaki is excellent (but really, when is flaming cheese bad?). They have sushi now but I have never tried it. I enjoy coming here at night for drinks and entertainment.
They usually have a good local band playing and sometimes on Sundays they have karaoke. It can get smokey and loud, but the drinks are strong and cheap, the wine and beer list is decent, and the bartenders are fantastic.
Chances are you'll run into an old friend, or make a few new ones, by the end of the night.
