Ok- a note about the service. There were 2 chefs and one server for a Friday night. It wasn't too crowded, but they were clearly taking a lot of phone orders. The poor waitress was literally running from table to table then back up to the counter to answer the phone. Given the less than ideal circumstances, she was a total rockstar.
The food was quite good. The Dragon, Veggie Tempura, and Three Spicy rolls were delicious. The Tom Yum soup was also stellar. Plus, I really appreciated the free desert with the words "Thank Ya" scrawled in strawberry syrup.
The pièce de résistance, for me, though, was that the poor harried waitress seemed prepared to move heaven and earth to return my phone to me when I accidentally left it there. Fishing Cat just earned themselves a lifelong customer. Thanks guys!!!
Went during lunch and dinner (different days). Both times I ordered sushi and Thai dishes.
Thai dishes: Kee Mao was good. I ordered Pad Thai when I went for dinner and the noodle was hard.
Sushi: The fish and the rice was so cold that my sensitive teeth hurt a bit. I also ordered the Three Spicy maki and it wasn't good and it was cold.
Service: HORRIBLE especially at night. The waitress forgot to punch in one of my orders even though she repeated my order to me. We had to wait 20 more minutes and they didn't even apologize to us.
I will never dine-in there even with Groupon. Maybe I'll order delivery from them if I'm craving Thai food late at night.
Well let's start with when i came in no one approached me or said hi and the place was empty. I had to ask if i could sit then they sat me..she gave me a.menu and walked away i had to call her over and ask her for lunch specials without her telling me then she left me for another 7 min..i mean Very unattentive then i asked if i could order like she never wanted to come back to my table. Food was great horrible service for no one being in here..won't be coming back
Review Source:We came here on valentine's day. There were only 3 tables,1 chef and 1 waitress. She told us the food was going to take a while so they gave us a free bowl of edamame. However, it was never crowded or more then 4 tables so it shouldn't have taken as long as it did. Even to pay it was brutally long... and the food wasn't good enough to make the wait worth while.
The tom yum noodle soup was good, but really small for being $6. Miso soup was just ok, really really small though. I finished it with 3 bites.
Fishing cat sushi was good, and the fire dragon was ok but the salmon lovers wasn't good at all
It has been a looooong time since I've written a Yelp review, but this wonderful place deserves recognition. Fishing Cat is now my go-to for local sushi and Thai-inspired dishes. Why? Because of the fresh ingredients and spot-on execution of their art. Yes, food art!
Every single item I've had from Fishing Cat -- from sushi to Thai food and more -- has been a delight. Pardon me if I keep this review super short, but I just ordered delivery from them and I want to be done with this and ready to eat, the minute it comes to my door.
If you choose to dine in, expect a cleanly designed space without kitsch. Comfortable and lovely.
Go there or order from there -- and enjoy!
I came here to use a groupon that I had recently purchased, and I wished I had purchased a second one. All I've bought there was sushi, and I definitely enjoyed it. My favorite part was their tempura in the veggie sushi. It is so crispy. The decor is also cute and modern. I will definitely come back again to satisfy my sushi cravings.
Review Source:Mother-daughter hang out day yesterday. My mom's a vegetarian. What to do with a house full of meat? THAI!! This was my first time ordering from here and the food arrived quickly -45 min or so like the girl on the phone stated. We both ordered Pad Thai with tofu. I used to be a vegetarian for 17 years so I still can appreciate some tofu and / or veggie only food. Probably good to take a little break here and there from meat any-hoo. We both really liked our food. Glad to know there is another good place to go in the area!
Review Source:I live 2 blocks from Fishing Cat and have wanted to go there for a long time. Last evening was my first time.
Pros:
* Delicious Sushi
* Good Service
* Nice Atmosphere
* Sports game was on the TV
* Helpful server who was easy to understand
Cons:
* Sushi was prices a little bit high
* The Godzilla Roll and Three Spicy (both very delicious) were rolled a little too loose causing them to fall apart a bit too easily.
I will be going back. I need to try their Thai food.
LOVE the sushi! Fresh & delicious! Rangoon is my favorite. Unique. The best ingredients of all restaurants in my opinion (the family think they're a bit too small or too few). A tad bit expensive (about $75 for a family of four) but so worth it. My family loved the beef teriyaki (I'm more of a sushi lover). The server is SO nice and even surprised us with a thank-you cheesecake (we came in a large group). The place was peaceful and seems to be very clean. Not overcrowded.
Review Source:At about 6:30 pm, On a Sunday, I ordered Penang curry, egg rolls, and a Spider Maki. I live about 4 blocks away. The confirmation email said I could expect my delivery in 45 minutes to an hour. I received my meal in under 20 minutes. Everything was fresh, hot, and just as I had ordered. The delivery man was polite. What more can you want?
I'm glad they're in the neighborhood..
Pretty good, Â and it's nice to have an inviting and casual sushi place around the corner on Peterson. I had been to katsu before, but found their service to be overtly pretentious so just because of that I decided I would never return. Â Anyway, back to this new place.
As other reviewers have mentioned the fish is fresh indeed and the portions are generous, meaning you have a lot of fish inside a maki roll and less rice than most small sushi spots. Â They're good and fast, by the time I walked over there my order was just getting wrapped up ( I live two blocks away). Â Im glad to see a new establishment in the neighborhood and I hope it stays, since most places seem to have bad luck on peterson ave. Â
One suggestion: Make it BYOB and you will have great success.
Such a cute logo, such dull maki rolls. Â That about sums up the Fishing Cat. Â I had the 5 piece Mexican Big Maki (which wasn't all that big, only 5 pieces??) and the Spicy Salmon Maki. Â The Mexican Big was tasty but I don't think it was worth $9.00. Â Spicy Salmon was OK, but I think it had way too much mayo for my taste. Pretty boring as far as Maki rolls are concerned. Â The plus side was that they did NOT skimp on the fish! Â The pieces of fish were quite generous so I doubt you will leave hungry. Â I will definitely give them another try, this time the Thai menu. Â Their Panang Curry is calling my name!
Review Source:Recently visited Fishing Cat with a friend after checking out their website. The space the restaurant occupies is your basic Chicago storefront, but the dining room is cute and tastefully decorated. The menu is well-designed and has a great range of choice. We ordered a few rolls and some basic appetizers, and found everything to be tasty, freshly prepared and beautifully presented. Very reasonably priced as well.
The only drawback is no fault of Fishing Cat's, but Peterson Road is a construction zone disaster area! I'd say avoid it at all costs, but then you'd miss out on Fishing Cat. Now more than ever they deserve your support, so fight your way through it and you'll be rewarded!
I have never dined here but I ordered delivery, I'm so happy I did. Â The thai food was really delicious and so is their thai iced tea!
Their logo is so adorable too. I have their takeout menu on my fridge, whenever I see it I go into fits over how freaking cute it is.
I also wanted to add-- They are now open LATE!
Monday-Thursday 11am-3am
I placed my delivery order around midnight!
I'm really glad I decided to give Fishing Cat a try. I was pleased with their customer service, food and price. The dining experience has been positive. The waitstaff was super helpful when my one year old decided she had enough and started throwing silverware and glasses on the floor. No annoyed looks or avoidance on their part. For a mother this is a big deal and determines if you will bring your business back.
The food was on point. Sushi fresh and yummy and Thai was even better.
Ordered Panang Curry noodles w chicken through Grubhub. FANTASTIC. WILL def order again!
Check their website, <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.fishingcatrestaurant.com&s=83f45c4ed9b5cc96345f7f71f68b6eb74dc37d4fbf81a640557d37bbb4e81447" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.fishingcatres…</a> for daily lunch specials (phone orders for pickup/delivery only, also for dine-in).
Groupon Now led us to Fishing cat for family dinner. Place looks like it's still being worked on.. loved the bench seating. Waitress very quiet, but kind. Chicken Pad Sewe (sp?) was delicious, Tom Yum and Panang Curry was very spicy. My poor son had a hard time eating the Panang, next time I'll have to mention mild. Chicken Fried rice was excellent as well. Sushi: california roll, dragon roll, mexican roll and shrimp tempura - daughter and daddy ate and both gave thumbs up. Total cost of all this food $74.00 Â They serve the dishes on a dinner plate and honestly, the portions were much smaller than I've seen at other thai places, but they charge close to the same amount. It was a great experience to try a new place close by, I would come back..
Review Source:What can I say, it's pretty dependable food. Â Nothing extraordinary or out of this world, but the prices are great and the flavors are good. Â The Thai ice coffee was a bit on the small side but it was only $1.25 so no real complaints from me.
Bonus points for the name and logo. Â There may be a million Thai _______'s out there but there really is only one Fishing Cat. Meow.
Nothing fancy here, just good Thai and sushi. Â Tasted the pad Thai and had the Mexican and Spicy Tuna sushi. Â The Mexican was the best roll I may have ever had. Â Not one to use hyperbole, it was truly delicious. Â
Kids wanted dessert to end the meal. Â We got two "scoops" of vanilla and two "scoops" of strawberry. Â Much to our surprise, the waitress brought the plate out with the Thai ice cream and a chocolate (I think) stencil of me and my two boys below the scoops. (See photo) Really personal and extremely friendly. Â
Good simple food...check it out. Â BYOB too!
We've ordered lunch from Fishing Cat twice. The first time was via Grubhub, the second time we called the order in. I've tried the Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box and the Beef Teriyaki Box. I preferred the beef. The bento box comes with the teriyaki, rice, salad, tempura, California roll and miso soup. The portions were generous.
I also tried a few individual pieces of sushi, including Yellowtail and Tamago. The sushi is good, and generous, but not the best I've ever had. I did find the Tamago to be a bit heavier and not quite as flavorful as some I've had, but all in all, I like the food from Fishing Cat. I like that Mom and I can make a good and filling lunch sharing a bento box. I like, even more, that the lunch doesn't break the bank.
I will stop in one of these days and check the place out, as it is only a hop, step and a jump from home. I think this spot is a potential winner!
P.S. I absolutely LOVE their logo.
For a sushi bar and thai restaurant, it's got good service. It is just new in the neighborhood for 2 weeks. The Big Maki that we tried: The Fire Dragon and the Three Spicy Maki nigiri sushi was good. But there was no difference in flavors and tasted the same. I enjoyed the unagi, escolar, and salmon nigiri.
Service was inviting and warm. They gave us a tamago (sweet omelette) salad, crab ragoon, and thai egg rolls on the house. The vegetable tofu soup was refreshing and delicious. The servings of desert, green tea and mung bean ice cream were plentiful. Definitely worth a try. BYOB.
