We went there for dinner on a Saturday evening at 6:30.  Our group had reservations, but when we arrived our table had been given away.  We had a group of 14 people. We placed our order and everyone received their food except three of us.  We waited and when we asked why our three orders hadn't come yet, the waitress was very rude to us.  Our orders finally came at the very end when everyone had already finished eating.  When our food finally came  (30+ minutes later) we were on our way out the door to a dance at our school and couldn't finish our food.  We ended up tipping 18% for this service (because of the size of our group it was automatically added in) which was terrible.  I had a terrible experience there and would never recommend anyone to go there.
Review Source:Make your own stir fry. Â Only gets 3 stars because I think if you have a stir fry restaurant your ingredients should always be the freshest and best around since customers see everything before it's cooked. Â Don't get me wrong, they're always well stocked, but sometimes the snap peas don't look so great, or maybe the green beans another time or sometimes the bean sprouts. Â The service here is always great, and lunch is a deal if you go when you're hungry. Â Definitely something fun and social for the whole family to participate and to taste everyone's creations to see who makes the best stir fry. Â I'll be back, but only for lunch.
Review Source:Across the street from Harpo Studios. Â Went here for lunch and at first I didn't understand how we were supposed to order our food. Â Then I got it! Â This is exactly like another restaurant I've been to called Mongolian BBQ. Â Except there was no large stone circle where the cooks prepared your bowl of food with swords to mix up the food and crack the eggs. Â The center of the stone slab was a donut shaped hole they used to dispose of egg shells and other inedible items.
But here at Flat Top you made your selections and handed off your bowl to someone in the back. Â And eventually they would cook it and bring it to your table. Â Almost the same concept, and we were delighted to find something familiar and similar to Mongolian. Â Food was excellent. Â Next time we are in that part of town (not likely since Oprah has moved on) I am sure we will stop by for a different combination of vegetables, pasta, meat, etc. that are stir fried to perfection.
Build your own epic noodley bliss. Â what's not to love? Â
Everything is fresh. Â More options than you can indulge in.
Make yourself a spicy seafood, veggie and rice noodle coconut curry soup with an egg cracked in it if you're needing some comfort food. Â
It can get hectic with both servers and customers walking around. Â Our server had to ask us a couple time which bowl was ours.
Also, its a franchise place in the middle of many unique Chicago restaurants. Â Go here for lunch once or twice, then get back to trying out new Chicago places!
I absolutely love this restaurant. Flat Top is much more reasonable to go at lunch time, and then fill your belly with anything that you can possibly think of that agrees with your particular taste pallet, and then again and again until you are bursting at the seams if you choose the unlimited option. They are very particular if you state that you have allergies, and will cook your food separate, which is also ideal for vegetarians whose stomach's may not be keen on food cooked in the same oil as meat.
The roti bread is amazing. I highly recommend grabbing the blue stick when you are finished. Â This slightly smaller than your bowl, round, flaky layers warms up your mouth with the sweet dough. Â It makes the bowl.
The best part of this particular one is you can look out the window at Oprah's Studio. Potential celebrity spotting capabilites.
Been here a few times, the past two have not been the best.
This review is based primarily off the rice. Â
About three weeks ago we went here for lunch on a Sunday, always find parking around here so we decide to go to this one till after the second time in a row the rice was dry & hard.
The first time the manager said he was aware of the problem (then why are you still serving this gross rice, make a new batch, but they were just so disorganized there running around under staffed) & took the food off our bill so we decided to give it another try, same problem again. Â You would think in three weeks you would get a new rice cooker, let's just say we won't be back again, I'm surprised more people don't complain about the rice when it's a main ingredient in stir fry!!!
Despite the trendy area, this Flat Top is pretty dumpy. It was super crowded on a Sunday mid-afternoon. Come on, it's not like it's Olive Garden! It is also smaller than other Flat Top locations I have patronized. And definitely, not nearly as clean. There weren't any rice options, because the pots have been scraped clean by others who beat me to them. The bowls were clearly washed, but not very thoroughly. This place kinda grossed me out.
Review Source:I have been to several other Flat Top locations before and I have had great experiences. However, I am not a fan of this one. Â I waited at least 5 minutes before a host/hostess was available. Â In fact, I had to flag down a waiter to get one to put our name on the list, he didn't know where he/she was, so he had to grab the manager and I had to wait a few minutes for him too. Â At least the wait after that wasn't too bad. Â
Our waiter was good, there was nothing against him. Â However, the place overall was just disorganized and a little dirty. Â I went to grab a bowl but there were food remnants left in some. Â Also, people were just cutting in and out everywhere (not Flat Tops fault, but it didn't lead to a great dining experience). Â The way their buffet was setup seemed odd too. Â If I wanted to get to something in the middle of the buffet I pretty much had to smash my head against the glass because it was an odd arrangement. Â
I'm a fan of Flat Top but I would try other locations first.
You can't really rate Flat Top on the food, can you? Â Well, I guess that's not entirely true since different locations offer different options sometimes, but the taste? Â That's all you.
I love Flat Top, I'm not even going to try and lie. Â I love stir fry and the fact that I can change it up each time helps when I'm indecisive. Â However, the service is lacking. Â I prefer this location as it's typically not as crowded as the one on Southport, and even if it is, I can still walk around comfortably. Â Like I said though, the service kind of sucks. Â Yes, sucks. Â It never fails. Â I'm always waiting a good half hour + for my drink, even when the restaurant is relatively empty....but the roti bread helps make up for it.
Still, I love Flat Top. Â It's also surprisingly easy to get parking around here at night.
The food was pretty good, but I was a bit irked that about 10 minutes elapsed between the time my dish was brought to me and when my friend's dish was brought to him. Â There were just two of us at the table and we brought our bowls of food to the cook at the same time --- it should not have been too difficult to get the timing right. Â Â
The bathroom deserves two stars, unfortunately.
I really like Flat Top since the first time I went to the suburban location with a large group. This location does not disappoint, though I have a picky gripe:
The sauce dude was overbearing, and effectively cockblocked my ability to sauce my meal my way. Handing me a little cup and telling me to dip my finger in it and taste it was kinda gross. Next time I'm telling him to can the pitch and stand aside. I can handle my own ladles. A tip of the hat to your dedication and enthusiasm to the sauce. You make sauciers everywhere flush with envy.
If only I could remember what combo of sauces I like! Â I always have to get the unlimited bowls because I mess up my sauces the first time, every visit. Â But I think I have it down now...soy sauce, sesame sauce, flat top sauce and korean bbq and I add just a touch of the minced garlic. Â Yum, not too sweet and not spicy, just very tasty. Â I'm, of course, writing this mix of sauces more for myself than you guys so that I'll remember next time :)
Aside from making the perfect sauce, I would like to reiterate from my last post that I suggest you keep a separate bowl of the steamed rice at the table rather than letting them put it on the flat top girl, b/c it gets all mushy if you have them cook it more. Â They don't seem to mind if you do that.
If I were to make a wishlist, I would put on my list that they give free refills of their amazing lemonades.
Not bad but I've had much better at real Mongolian Grill restaurants. This Mongolian Grill was Americanized by some suburban restaurant group.
Kind of pricey especially since you only get one trip to the grill.
I may just have to try the breakfast as you can create your own omelets, pancakes and French toast.
I just can't seem to get excited over Flat Top Grills in general. I suppose it can be argued that anything that tastes like crap is your own fault at a place like this, but maybe letting people pick their own ingredients is a bad idea. I never seem to manage to do a great job. Still, it was food and I was hungry.
My friends and I ended up seated at the bar as it was crowded. We all assembled our bowls and waited. One of my dining companions had a peanut allergy and managed to bottleneck the entire line of dishes waiting to be cooked so that the cooks could clean the grill and ensure that her dish wouldn't kill her. Â Although, It is a good thing that they have a very conscientious procedure for people with special dietary restrictions.
Overall though, I didn't manage to eat enough to justify the "unlimited bowl" and my food had a subtle char-like flavor that I wasn't keen on. Meh, I guess I just feel that if you want great Asian food, go to your local greasy spoon Thai diner or Chinese restaurant. Anything I have even managed to assemble at a place like Flat Top has been inferior to my neighborhood delivery.
Eh, I guess the concept is there. Â But, there's just something about people picking through the raw meat sitting out on the counter that just doesn't do it for me. Â The service was super slow and unless you follow one of their recipes or know what you're doing, you could end up with a really disgusting dish. Â
For example, I thought by using a "sweet and sour soup" stick, I would get a side of soup. Â Oops. Â Instead they turned my meal into soup. Â My fault, yes. Â Still, I don't recommend peanut sauce sweet and sour soup with chicken. Â
Regardless of my own mistakes, food that sits out like it does here, is just not appeztizing. Â It's pretty much...gross. Â No thanks.
Friends and I were all meeting up in Chicago from all corners of the country to see a Cubs v Reds game and enjoy a few days away from life.
So, of course, I kept an eye on Groupons for a month to restaurants that cater to GF peeps. Luckily, Flat Top Grill popped up a few weeks before my trip. I purchased two Groupons knowing that a table of 6 would not be able to make good use of a $20 Groupon.
We waited until our last day in town, as a sort of farewell brunch. Once we sat down it took FOREVER (about 5 minutes) for a server to greet us and even longer for our small little drinks to appear before us. We had already made it through the slow-moving line at the stir fry station before our drinks arrived.
I had been very excited about making a glorious GF omelette stuffed to the brim with toppings. Based on their website it seemed as though they were very good about allergies and I suppose they were to some extent BUT at the restaurant it was an entirely different story other than listing a few allergy-safe foods on their chalkboard and providing "allergy alert" sticks to add to bowls, there wasn't much in the way of information on ingredients.
For this reason, I avoided the chicken, pork, sausage and sauces. I basically had to eat a veggie omelette with a side of bacon. Not exactly what I had dreamed of.
Aside from my issues with the GF thing, the rest of the experience wasn't great. Our food kept arriving to our table COLD. Not just a little bit cold, but really cold. The bacon was cold, the omelettes were cold, every time. Why? Because the grill is in such an open area that the air conditioning chills the food AS IT COOKS, then the cooks put the food on COLD PLATES and put the plates of food on a cold ledge to GET EVEN COLDER while it waits for a server to pick it up. The servers don't seem to realize the importance of hot food because we would watch our food go to the ledge and just stare at it, hoping it would float to us or something.
Also, the coffee was terrible. It tasted burnt the first time and when we asked to have FRESH coffee, the server insisted that the coffee was fresh but obliged us by bringing new cups of coffee for each of us. No change. It was still bitter and old tasting. I can handle some pretty bad coffee by drowning the flavor in sugar and cream but this coffee was ruining my meal.
Note to servers/managers at FTG:
I have worked in food service jobs before. Eggs get cold fast. At my restaurant egg orders always took precedence over other food when I had to make a choice because if I didn't deliver plates with eggs right away, the eggs would be sent back... and we used hot plates, overhead warmers and heated counters.
Back to the review:
It got to the point where we were sending back our food so often that we started standing at the grill to wait for our food ourselves. Frankly, that makes more sense anyway. Servers are pretty useless here and this type of restaurant would work better as a made-to-order-buffet instead.
My friends seemed to enjoy their waffles and pastries a lot so they weren't as dissatisfied but still had their complaints.
This restaurant was the low point of our 3 days in Chicagoland. It's a shame it was also the last thing we did together.
Verdict:
A different experience than your typical restaurant, but not worth full price or even Groupon price really. Dinner may be better since stir-fry doesn't get cold AS FAST, but don't hold your breath. The drinks are way over priced so be prepared to drink water or spend a lot on soda/juice/etc.
I've been to Flat top at least 25 times. I have been to many locations in Illinois near the Chicago area including the one on Washington, Wabash, North Ave, and the one in Naperville. Every single one has been a great experience. I probably have been to the one on Washington the most since it's a great location in the city and parking is plenty on the weekend at no cost.
I love the idea of being able to make your own stir fry and make your own combination of sauces. I always end up making a soup at the end with my special ingredient sauce I created. The roti is to die for and I cannot go without it. Being a vegetarian, this place is the place to go to have a good meal. I usually end up going about three times since I get small amounts each time and I can try new types or varieties each time.
Overall, I think the deal is well worth it. If you become a member on their website, they send you free meals on your birthday and on the anniversary date. That's a total plus in this economy! Parking really have never been an issue unless I go to the North ave one and I end up valeting the car there since it is harder to find a spot on the weekend. Food and service is great. Service can get slow at times when it is really busy, but overall it has been good. It's a must try place!
This seems to be a weekly meal. Â Consistent, good service, free parking!
I come here weekly because of the consistency, I always wonder why they dont have these in Hawaii. They would make a ton. Â This place is fanfreakintastic. Â You can make your bowl, as simple, or complex as humanly possible.
Brown rice, onions, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, baby corn, green onions, mushrooms, korean bbq sauce, filipino sausage or pork, double roti bread, and tofu. go 2 meal.
keeps me coming back.
Novel concept but isn't worth it. Make stir fry at home.
I used to come here years ago, and under different management, it was a solid 3 four stars. Â
However, upon my recent re-visit (after many years), I have to say that the amount you spend isn't worth it.
The alcohol drinks tasted as if a 14 year old mixed the drinks and some of the vegetables seemed not as fresh.
However, there was a person at the sauce area where they give good recommendations on mixing different sauces. Â My first one turned out really well and I still enjoy all the options they have (Mu Shu, Roti, etc.)
IMHO, its not worth checking out as you can pretty much try this at home for much cheaper, but if you must go, I recommend:
1. going up only once (going multiple times costs $2 extra - $15 total dish),
2. asking the person what tastes you are looking for in your dish
3. avoiding cocktails
When I called to make my reservation, I asked if I could bring a cake for a bday. Â They said "Yeah, no problem!" Â They failed to mention that there is a $10 cake fee. Â They told me when I got there that there is ALWAYS Â a cake fee at restaurants - I beg to differ! Â I've hosted/been to NUMEROUS restaurants for bdays and we always bring a cake (as long as they'll allow it) and we've never been charged for it. Â It's fine if you have a fee, but when I ask about it before hand, let me know that there is one. Â STUPID!
Food is fine. Â Be careful with the amount of sauce you put on your dish - they can be super salty, which was the complaint of our party of 16. Â 16 people, all very different, can't be wrong.
I had my rehearsal dinner here and I had mixed feelings. My mother in law reserved a space for about 40 people and we were stuck towards the end of the restaurant in a cramped area near the washrooms. Since there were so many people in such a small area, it was very noisy and hard to talk to people just two seats down. Â
I've been to other FTG's and the food and preparation here seems to be on par. Even though the restaurant was busy at this time, our food didn't take too long to come out. The service was fast and responsive. Because we had a large group, we got to pay a package deal which included one trip per person and unlimited sodas. Not bad, but I wish we didn't feel cramped like sardines.
I've always wanted to like Flat Top Grill. I like the concept of choosing my own stir fry ingredients and they do have a good selection of veggies, meat, and sauces. The first time I went to FTG was a couple of years ago and I was very underwhelmed - I decided to give it another try and now I know why I haven't gone back in years.
No matter how much sauce you dump into your ingredient bowl, the result is always completely bland. This must have something to do with the fact that its cooked on a "flat top" and not in a wok which would allow the sauce to simmer and be an actual part of the dish as opposed to it all being soaked up by the grill and the veggies. I've tried a variety of sauces, different amounts, etc and regardless of my choices, the dish always tastes the same - bland and disappointing.
However, all of their locations are generally busy so I wonder if maybe I just suck at prepping my own stir fry? Doubtful.
Blah.
Meh.
Never again.
A bit of a disappointment. After visiting another Flat Top location for dinner a while back, I was extremely excited to check out the breakfast. It sounded like so much fun. Making your own pancakes, french toast, omelette's, scrambled eggs - how could you go wrong. You make the items yourself, so if it tastes like poo there's no one to blame but you. Right? Wrong!
The guys working the grill are to blame for this disappointing review. I am not sure if they felt overwhelmed and rushed or what, but all of our orders came out missing the meats. The french toast wasn't fully cooked, which was a big let down, considering that the toppings made it scrumptious, but I could only eat a portion of it. Once we let (our very friendly) waiter know that each plate was delivered without meat or hash browns he was quick to deliver. Unfortunately, when the turkey sausage made it to the table it wasn't fully cooked either. Too many disappointments in one meal, sorry Flat Top.
I went here for breakfast having somewhat of an idea what this place is all about. I'm cool with getting up and creating my own super-duper-omlette, sure, let's go crazy, It's breakfast after all.
The food bar where you add all of your ingredients was understocked and the produce was not fresh. Wilted spinach, no thank you. Isn't this supposed to be the fun part? I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. If there are more than 4 people up there it gets extremely crowded and you end up standing around for a long time. Also, you have to make sure you put you and the person you came with bowls together so hopefully you can eat at the same time, which I would say is pretty standard for serving guests at a restaurant.
My food came out 20 minutes after I ordered it. To me, that's a long time since I did half of the leg work. It wasn't that bad, but nothing I would come back for. My boyfriends food was another story. His came out about 10 minutes after I finished eating and received two pieces of texas toast trying to pass for french and some crappy bacon. It was awful and it looked so sad on his plate.
Our server was nice and attentive but that doesn't make up for crappy food and not getting to dine with the person you came with.
Stay away, so many other places worth your dime. Flat Top - you fell Flat - sorry!
Being that I'm not from Chicago, I had no idea this was a chain. Also being not from Chicago, I am ridiculously excited by unlimited veggies.
I made some kind of gnarly veggie concoction, poured Indian curry sauce over it and even threw in some calamari. It sounds disgusting but I ate most of it and didn't understand how people do the unlimited version of these bowls. It was really, really fun--kind of like Mongolian BBQ except with an option of 4,000 different sauces.
Its definitely worth a second and third visit, especially since it is so close to where I work. $10 goes a long, long way here. I'm definitely trying those bread rounds next time! I have a feeling there's a lot here left to discover.
I hate stir fry so I won't even think about this place for lunch or dinner.
BUT FOR BREAKFAST! Merlin's Beard is this the spot!
You want eggs and a delicious chocolatey pancake for desert--you can, for 8.95. Â Fruit, muffins, oatmeal, and gummy worms are all endless. Â You can make the best of sweet and savory for a very affordable price, quick and delicious.
The food itself isn't anything that you couldn't whip up yourself in 20 minutes, but any place that can seat 10 people who walked in without a reservation at 10 AM on a sunday is worth 5 stars.
We were here on a Friday night right around 6:30 pm. I was familiar with the concept of Flat Top and it has been a while since we went there. We figured that we would try a different location this time.
We were immediately pleased as the place was not all that out of control crowded. Our server did the trick and was friendly and helpful, checking up on us and keeping our drinks full. At a place like this, that is all we can really ask for right?
The bar was kept clean, organized and well stocked. I was a little bothered that the floor on one side of the food bar was rather dirty this early in the night, but that did not deter me from creating two big bowls of stir fry heaven. They were cooked perfectly by the way.
Here is what really struck me about this particular location. In the middle of our meal, I realized that every seat in the place was taken. There was no line, but the place was full. Usually when a place reaches this level of fullness, I start feeling cramped, or it gets noisy, things like that. It did not bother me at this place at all. It was either a very good layout, or maybe it was the stunningly beautiful lady sitting across from me that distracted me from the crowd!
The service here is horrible. I have been a few times in the last few months, and every time I hope that service will get better... nope. Elizabeth R is a vegetarian. I am not. She puts tofu in her bowl, whereas I put chicken. It normally takes at least twenty minutes longer for me to get my food than it does for her to get hers. I understand meat takes longer to cook, but daaamn. That's a big disparity.
Additionally, when we order the bread, we never get it. We have to ask for it a second time, sometimes a third. Same when it comes time to order a class of water - you have to be persistent. I don't want to have to expend any effort when I am in a restaurant... uh, that's why I'm in a restaurant... and I have to almost plead to get bread and water. (Okay, that sounded really dramatic, but who wants to ask for something more than once?)
The food is always fine once it arrives... thus the two stars.
Note: This review is based upon their brunch.
I had the chance to try their brunch today and was really impressed. Yes, breakfast is hard to mess up for anybody but their execution was great. For $8.99, I partook in all-you-can-eat make-your-own-omelette-french-toast-pancake-egg-Âscramble with turkey-sausage-roti-bread-hash-browns-to-boot brunch. I gorged myself on a delicious egg scramble with ham, bacon, sausage, bell pepper, cheese, onions, and scallions. Drunk a too large OJ and went back for fresh fruit and oatmeal. Then went back for French toast topped with Reese's bits, walnuts, almonds, pecans, and butterscotch bits. I didn't finish the French toast but walked out happy. The service was fast and attentive. The manager checked on every table and our server made sure we were taken care of. Highly recommended for brunch.
I finally got to hit up this Flat Top location last week. I am a huge fan of the place as a whole, but had only been to the Belmont and North Ave. locations.
The West Loop FTG, like the others, has the same fresh ingredients, variety of sauces, and $8.99 unlimited lunch. My entire party agreed that it sure beats spending the same amount of cash (or even more) on a sandwich at Jerry's.
Normally I would give five stars, as I always have good food, good service and a fun time at Flat Top. But the server we had on Friday kind of ruined it for me.
Now, like any other buffet-type restaurant, the only thing a server at FTG has to do is get drinks and be friendly. Sounds pretty easy, but our server had quite the difficult time doing even that. He was nice (though in a cheesy, lame way) and took over 15 minutes to deliver drink orders. Now, maybe it was the bartenders that sucked, but either way, we were a little annoyed.
About the food--same quality, etc. as usual. I didn't remember the Indian coconut curry being so curry-ish, but it was today. Excessively so. Otherwise everything was good, and the drinks (while slow) were good. I had a spicy mango margarita, which was good though not particularly strong. But it was lunchtime, so it was just enough to cure my hangover from the night before without making me useless for the remainder of the work day.
I'm sure that I will go back, but hopefully next time we will experience the fun, friendly and competent service that I have always been used to at Flat Top. I will definitely stick to one of the other locations, as it's a great place for groups or out-of-towners.
After trying their dinner at the North Ave location, I thought it would be fair to try Flat Top's breakfast + lunch options for Saturdays and Sundays as well.
If you arrive before 12:15 PM on a Saturday or Sunday, you can get breakfast and stay for lunch for just $9 - quite a steal if you are feeling up to a food coma-induced nap for the rest of the afternoon, which is what happened to us. Â Personally, since I hate cooking, their breakfast was easier for me to "make," and thus, swallow. Â I put together an omelette and pancake that couldn't be messed up, and they tasted heavenly. Â Lunch, on the other hand, came with almost all the same ingredients as dinner, and I gave up after 2 attempts at Indian curry and Chinese wide noodles with black bean garlic sauce. Â Still a fun place to go, though, with healthy (i.e., egg white omelettes, brown rice, etc) and vegetarian (i.e., vegan chicken, soy protein) options!
Flat top has been one of my favorite restaurants for a long time. Although, I have noticed lately that they have been having a few issues. The food is still very tasty though. The key is to taste the sauces before you put them on your food...once you find your favorite, you will be golden. Obviously there are also the safe bets, like teriyaki. My personal favorite is the soy sesame, which they actually got rid of for a while, but now it is back!
The only issues, I went there about 2 months ago and their air conditioning was broken, on a pretty humid night. I swear the manager said "drinks are on us", but then they were not..so I have no idea about that. It was pretty uncomfortable in there though..and the windows did not open. I felt bad for the chefs/servers... This past weekend I took another trip there and it wasn't super crowded, however it took a really long time to get our food. I think we were waiting 20+ minutes, which is pretty long when your bowls were next in line for the grill.
Anyway, I still maintain that the food is always very tasty, and I will still go back. I just wish they would put a location closer to the loop/river north area. I feel like I heard something about one opening somewhere in the loop...
Instruction manual:
1. Â Choose your ingredients Â
2. Â Give them over to be cooked
3. Â Hope that what you chose turns out good. Â Really hope. Â A lot. Â Seriously.
I've been to this particular location three times (although any of their several locations probably is no different than the next), each with a large group of people. Â The concept is simple, yet the actual experience can get a little... complicated.
To be honest, my first time there was terrible and it left a bad impression with me. Â However, each subsequent time got a little better. Â Still, it's not a place I go out of my way to eat at.
I guess it has to do with the fact that each person chooses their own laundry-list of ingredients, without much guidance from anyone. Â If you put too many veggies, or too little sauce, or combine weird sauces together, or forget to put garlic/onions into your ingredient bowl, you won't know that your concoction is bad until it's done cooking.
Don't get me wrong: Â I'm not that bad of a cook on my own. Â It's just that when I cook at home, I can visually monitor how much of what I'm adding to my dish. Â At Flat Top, you kind of pile things into a small bowl and aren't able to gauge if you've put too much/too little of something. Â And the whole thing about all these different ingredients in front of you at one time... It's just a bit much.
The bright side: Â it's all you can eat, so if you mess a dish up, you can start over. Â But think of all the food you're wasting in doing so! Â The roti prata bread is good though.
Tip: Â if you're new at the do-it-yourself stirfry thing, try following one of the pre-conceived recipes, lest you put together a monster of veggies and too much salty sauce.
Had Flat Top for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I've been craving it ever since. Â
You create a huge bowl of fixin's with everything you can think of, with all kinds of veggies, sauces, meats, and other toppings. Â Then you put your bowl by the grill with your name on it (and little sticks in it that color-signify any other preferences, like allergies). Â I tried my dish Mu Shu at the behest of my girlfriend, which was so damn good.
This location is cool, but the seating's a bit awkward. Â I'd ask to wait if you don't see something you like, since lots of the seats kind of suck. Â But the food is so good! Â It's like Mongolian BBQ but way better. Â My only problem is that it's a tad expensive for my budget (with the student discount, it was still over $10 per person). Â Granted, you can get all you can eat for like a buck more, but you're pretty much full after one dish.
Makes me what some Mu Shu chicken with all the right toppings right now.
I love the flat top grill! It's a little bit of a hike outside of the loop, but well worth the trip. Â Pick exactly the veggies and meat what you want. They have a great selection of veggies, meats, sauces. Â I could eat stir fry every day. Â I recommend getting the flat bread.
My only complaint is that I can never seem to get the exact sauce/condiment combination right. Â Always seems like something is missing. Â Guess I have to keep trying :-)
I actually loved it here. Â The concept has been done before, but it's packaged well in a good sized restaurant with good service. Â
My only problem is getting someone to go back. Â Recently, we were in a condo upstairs from the joint and my suggestion to go to Flat Top Grill still got nixed.
