Hi, my friend and I were hiking in Cold Spring yesterday and afterward decided to come back to Foodies for a Margherita pie. To our delight, the building is now re-painted sunshine yellow with purple accents. Only the color-blind could miss it! We went inside and Bret was there. He remembered us and told us that my review inspired them to paint the building!
We were glad to see that everything else was the same. By the way, the pie was excellent with a thin, crunchy crust and fresh tasting tomatoes. I could have eaten the whole thing myself. It came with a free wings special. My friend consumed the wings which meant more pizza for me!
I really try hard not to be a cranky eater, but...apparently over the holiday weekend every last one of the regular staff took off...the temp hires were nice (well one of the two didn't speak English, so I'm making an assumption there) but not knowledgeable about the menu or really well versed in food prep, it seemed...?
When I first looked at the creative and interesting menu, I wanted to try something like a specialty salad, the risotto balls, their baked chicken wings, a homemade soup, or one of the other house-made specials, as there were many items that seemed tasty...
BUT, wanting not to get myself in over my culinary head, I stuck to one slice of veggie and breaded chicken pizza, majorly motivated to do so by the staffing situation. S/O got a cheese steak sandwich with jalapeños. Both were edible, but so incredibly far off from what I expected when I rolled into a place called "Foodies."
Note to management- use your regular folks, or better yet, yourselves...and when you/they aren't available, just close for a day. It's a local joint, you really can take the liberty to do that now and then...I'd rather come by and be disappointed the place was closed rather than be underwhelmed by a place that everyone else raves about.
UPDATE: My S/O went back here for dinner on a REGULAR, non-holiday weekday when he was traveling for work in the West Point area. He said, "The food was just as good, if not better, but if you can believe this, the service was actually worse."
Who woulda thunkit?
Foodies is amazing. They are so friendly and you can pretty much find anything you're looking for out of a deli - sandwiches, wraps, salads. The caprese sandwich was delicious as are their salads. Its right next to Bear Mountain state park, so it's a great place to pick up a picnic as well.
Review Source:Foodies is singlehandedly the best restaurant around here. Not only is the food impeccable (recommend the Casey Jones or ANY of the pizzas and hot food items), it's truly the people that make this place great. Unlike traditional businesses, the goal of Foodies is to impart and elevate the customer's appreciation for food, thus living up to its name. The location is a bit hidden off 9W, but if you are ever near West Point, make sure you stop by for a quick bite!
Review Source:Stopped here while hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2010. BF and I managed to eat a giant pizza, I think it had Mama or Grandma in the name, and it was absolutely delicious. The staff were really nice, and helped us with water refilling before we went back to hiking. We will definitely be back on our next thru-hike!
Review Source:What a great find in the area. I thought I would be stuck with pizza or pizza, but then I came across this deli on Yelp. It was off the main (only) street in town, so I would never have found it on my own. I was the only person in there on a Tuesday night around 7 pm. It seemed almost ready to close, and I felt bad for making them unwrap everything just to make me a sandwich. But I soon felt at ease. I'm assuming he was the owner, but was definitely a "foodie" started offering me samples of his favorites - a flaky pastry made my his neighbor stuffed with feta and kalamatas, truffle oil and homemade baguette slices, and lime infused olive oil for my salad! What a delightful atmosphere, and I hadn't even tasted the sandwich yet. I had the Casey Jones, which I found out is named for one of his sons. They make they're own baguettes and mozzarella, but the sourdough ciabatta is also made nearby if you're tempted to try that. The sandwich was great and very high quality ingredients. Their signature salad was also amazing. It had crisp greens and was loaded with berries, almonds, and blue cheese.
Overall, a much better choice than a greasy slice of pizza and a much friendlier atmosphere!
