Everyone who says it's 65 and up is right...it really is.  I think the one thing that was a deal breaker for me was that 1.) their vegetable sides (spinach, broccoli, carrots) are not made from fresh vegetables - the waiter confirmed their veggies are canned or frozen....Can i say YUCK?  Second - for the price of the meals - the owners could use some of the profits to fix up the interior booths, furniture, and most of all the bathrooms.  I felt like it was still in Shoney's buffet (the previous establishment) when I walked into the bathrooms.  Heavy food, outdated decor, and canned vegetables.  I think not - YUCK!

After driving past Fritz's for many years, I decided to give it a shot.  True it is an older crowd and was a favorite of my grandfathers.  But the old-time feel, classic menu and bar provided a great atmosphere...much more than I expected from the outside appearance.  In addition, the food and service were great.  Highly recommended.

Situated along a strip that hosts Springfield's largest concentration of payday loan stores, Fritz's Restaurant ("The Wagon Wheel") doesn't look like much from the outside. The inside, however, is pleasantly surprising, with white tablecloths and (somewhat) updated decor. Try to sit in the brick-lined narrow room just to the right of the door -- it's more of an intimate feel than the large dining room in back.

I ordered the scallops prepared with Cajun spices, which were decent (there were a few rubbery spots but they were mostly well prepared). It was spicier than expected, but take that with a grain of salt as I've got the spice tolerance of an 8-year-old. Don't pass up the sweet rolls and sweet butter that come before dinner. And the dessert tray is out of control -- and a hard sell before the server even says a word.

Service was friendly, knowledgeable and professional, though a bit slow. Dinner for five at 8 p.m. took more than 90 minutes. Price was in line with similar dishes at a chain restaurant.

One final note: if you've talked to anyone raised in Springfield about Fritz's, you've probably heard the knock that it's a place for the elderly. Yes, if you're under 40, your presence will have a statistically significant effect on the average age in the place. But don't let that stop you -- just think of yourself as cool in a Rat Pack kind of way.

Overall my expectations were exceeded. Note, however, that the four-star review is because this is Springfield -- it might only deserve three stars in a city with a more ambitious dining scene. That said, I will be going back.

This place has excellent food, reasonable prices, and great portion sizes.  The decor is dark-toned and wood-paneled ... somewhat formal-looking ... so if you're looking for someplace trendy and new this probably isn't it.

Also, although this place would probably be fine for children, it doesn't cater to children.  It's not Taco Bell or Churck E Cheese.  It's a nice restaurant where you should probably only bring well-behaved children.

Once upon a time, this was one of THE places to eat. Which is why the old relatives insist on going. The decor is dated and the food is meh. I've eaten there many times and the best thing they have is a Cobb Salad. The steaks are fatty and the fried food is super greasy. Their veggies are always an odd color and the twice baked potato tastes like it was frozen. They used to have mean waitresses but it seems that trend is over. I would skip in favor of something better.

came here on my last trip to Springfield and decided to buck up and order my own plate of liver and onions.  I was really hesitant, just in case I no longer liked it (since i've only had a few bites before), and my dads girlfriend and our family friend were verrrry nervous for me ordering it because they thought I'd hate it.  I ordered it anyways, with the twice baked potato (never had that either) and both were delicious and I now crave liver and onions!  Everybody at our table got something different and everybody loved everything.  This might be one of my favorite places to eat in Springfield!

We all loved this place - the BEST prime rib I've ever had. I always thought this place was just for geriatrics, but no - it's for rich people. It's a bit too pricey for me to go to very often... but I hope to go back soon.
