Nice friendly staff however the sushi was horrible!! Fish wasn't fresh and had a near metallic taste to it. If someone were to try sushi for the first time here....it definitely would have been there last. All maki had very little fish and way too much rice....not an enjoyable experience....I fully expect to have digestive issues later.
Review Source:I don't like to just toss around 5 stars, I have to give Fuji Ya all 5 stars. Is it because I can walk in and they say "hello your usual?" Well maybe I come here a lot lol. But I have to say I love it here. I have had sushi in many places. Its hard to find sushi like I had in San Francisco here in Chicago. Call me nuts but Fuji Ya comes close. The sushi is always fresh and tastes amazing. Also try the steak fried rice. You won't be disappointed.
The walls are covered with photos of customers that have been eating here since they opened. I find that very cool. Its a small place but very nice place to come have lunch or dinner with friends. Everyone is very nice and if you stop in at lunch at sit at the sushi bar you can chat with them as they prepare your food. In my opinion one of the best sushi places around town. Also they have some great lunch specials.
We are big fans of sushi and asian food in general and have tried many high quality restaurants in and around Chicago. Unfortunately Fuji Ya is sub-par in both quality and quantity. We ordered 2 rolls and an order of  Yakisoba with chicken. To be fair the Yakisoba was OK but a little greasy and a very small portion for the price. The rolls were below average, only 5 pieces, loosly rolled,  and the seafood inside was minimal. The salad was the type that comes out of a bag and it was brown and funky. As for the inside of the restaurant, it was dimly lit with many light bulbs burned out and really no lighting back in the cooking area.
I called the restaurant to voice my disappointment and was told I was the only person that has ever called to complain since 1989....I find that claim a little dubious.
Needless to say we wont be back, which is unfortunate because we eat out often and this is nearby.
I like it a lot! I moved from Chicago more than 1 year ago and now that I revisited the city i wanted some good sushi since Chicago is well known for their fantastic japanese cuisine, Fujiya is not the best sushi but it is pretty good, not expensive, small restaurant but nice. btw if you want to try the appetizers, the agedashi is delicious at this place!
Review Source:For the past year and a half, the BF has been suggesting we checkout the sushi here since it's the closest sushi joint in our neighborhood. Â I've been such the skeptic having reviewed all the Yelp reviews and a majority of them have been negative. Â
But one day, when I had an insane craving for sushi, I finally caved. Â
*GAME OVER* should've been when we walked in, and my feet were planted semi firmly on the sticky floor. Â As we sat and perused the menu, I looked at him and said with pleading voice "ARE YOU SURE?!" Â He said yes. Â Okay, fine. Â How can I object when he said he was paying?
The sushi was not fresh at all!!! Â We ordered a shrimp tempura roll and it was disgusting. You can tell that the tempura inside was fried hours ago, as it was not warm and the exterior was even stale. Â HELLOOO? Stale and sushi should never be mixed together. Â I can't remember the other roll names, other than the fact that the quality was poor as well. Â
I should've ran for the hills when the first red flag was the sticky floors. Â But I dunno if I could have, since this must be their technique for getting customers to stay "planted" Â and purchase from their menu.
If you are allergic to raw seafood, avocado etc. DO NOT eat here. The restaurant owner doesn't accommodate people w food allergies. He was clear to let me know his restaurant has too much seafood and he couldn't help me out. Â They gave me back my money (I ordered a sweet potato/cream cheese roll) and didn't even apologize. I've gone to many sushi spots and all have make special accommodations for people with allergies...not this place very disappointed because it is so close to home.
Review Source:This is a thin line between 2.5- 3 stars, but I love the quiet atmosphere. But I don't like the price. Even for a lunch special, they're pretty pricey. My fried rice was really greasy and I asked for steamed. The garlic shrimp is not great either. But my son ate his chicken. (He did not eat his fried rice because he likes steamed too) Would I come back here? If I don't want Pepe's, Chinese, or Denny's, and I am in the area and don't want to drive anywhere. Do I crave this place? No,
Review Source:Had the lunch special golden shrimp with fried rice and miso soup. Â While it's a great deal at $12, I just wasn't happy with the taste. Â The best of the bunch was the miso soup and that was a bit over-salted. Â The shrimp were tasty but the golden sauce had a kind of off-taste. Â The fried rice was just way too sweet for my palate.
Review Source:Three of us went to lunch and were seated promptly and given water. I HAVE TO give a brownie point for quick service. If you are on lunch and let them know, they make sure to get you in and out pronto, KUDOS to that! After we looked over the sushi menu and picked our choices, we were able to see the chef's preparing our sushi for us. You can see just well enough over the counter and it's so entertaining to watch!
Our waitress brought us soup and took our order. The soup was different from what I am used to but tasted REALLY good. Nom! After soup we got our sushi and the rolls looked decent. The shrimp tempura rolls were overflowing with rice and were cut too thick. It was a tad bit too sloppy for me. It tasted good but not great. The California rolls were also good but not great. The crab meat looked like coleslaw and some of the avocado pieces looked like they'd been sitting out for a while.
Overall, our waitress was very nice, seeing the chefs make the sushi was fun but, the food was mediocre. It's good for a quick bite but not much more. =[
More like 3.5 stars.
The thing about Fuji Ya is... its just overpriced first and foremost. I like having dinner here and the sushi is fine for the area. The portions are just so little with the sushi and the quality suffers just a bit.
However their fried rice is pretty unique in a good way from normal Chinese take out, and its really quite plentiful. Its slightly sweet and heavy on the meat and egg, which if thats your thing its a very good thing. Its my thing, so I like it.
The golden shrimp... its like ... what the heck is that egg-y mayo-y  evil on top of delicious shrimp?? As long as you don't think about what it might be, its just heavenly.
The problem I have with Fuji Ya is just the prices and the quality of the sushi. I'm left feeling a little ripped off sometimes. I like the way they do their california roll however. Peppery, creamy, and melt in your mouth sushi! Their handrolls are also very good and boston with raw salmon is just delicious. I tried some fish egg sushi with a quail egg on top, that was very interesting and delicious.
This is NOT your run of the mill sushi place. Not fusion, not super cheap, not WOW but not EH depending on what you like or order, not plentiful but still unique and quite delicious. Â interesting menu just know what to order. I'm a fan.
This a safe bet when you are in the Norridge area. Â A clean place with a big menu, great specials, and excellent service just about sums it up. Â More than anything Fugi Ya offers convenience since it is so close to the HIP, has parking, and is not pricey at all. Â I recommend the Golden shrimp, it is my substitute for splurging at Ron of Japan. Â Enjoy!
Review Source:I've gotten sushi takeout here a few times now because it's the only sushi place in the area and it's only average to me. Like a previous reviewer had posted, it's good for a quick sushi fix. It's not exactly  aweful or anything, it just doesn't really stand out from other sushi places. Also in regard to freshness I'm afraid I haven't experienced consistency. Fresh ingredients are very important when eating sushi. In all fairness to thier Koren food, I have not tried it yet, so I will have to go back and give it a try.
Review Source:I consider the food to be extremely average and the prices on the high side for quantity and quality.
- Gyu don - OK, but not the delicious gyu don that I'm familiar with, which has thin, tender slices of beef and onions in a delicate sauce. Fuji Ya's is more like chewy chunks of beef and assorted vegetables in a teriyaki sauce.
- Chicken teriyaki lunch combo - Portion seemed pretty small to me and was seemingly emphasized by the large plate it was served on. Chicken was overcooked. Their fried rice is like no other fried rice I've had--and I don't necessarily mean that in a good way. It's very sweet and kind of gooey. Not my cup of tea.
- Shrimp tempura maki - Hit the spot. Just wish it had some spicy mayo or eel sauce like every other shrimp tempura roll I've had. They offer a spicy version of this roll so maybe they do use spicy mayo in it. Price and quantity (~$6.95/5 pcs.) kinda feels like a rip off to me when I pay the same amount or less, for more pieces pretty much anywhere else.
- Asparagus beef rolls - Pieces of asparagus wrapped with thin slices of beef and cooked in a teriyaki sauce. Simple but tasty.
I really wouldn't recommend this place to anyone and avoid it myself. If I have a sushi craving, I put it off until I get to tried and true places outside of the area.
Very average sushi place with just average hot food as well. Â However, for the area and its inhabitants and/or sushi newbies, I guess it could pass for "good" as there is nothing really else in this area worth mentioning. Â Sushi rice was super bland and the nigiri was way overpriced for the quality received. Â Much better sushi in the North Shore area.
Review Source:This place is the best of this kind of food in the area. There aren't many sushi places around and for the price this place is a pretty good deal. The korean food is the best here and the service is great as well. There miso soup is the best I've had, and there iced tea comes sweetened and is really on point. The best thing about this place is that it's family run, and open past 9.
Review Source:My husband and I stopped in last night for dinner on a whim, while we were out running errands. Service was good, decor was nothing special, and the food was average. Gyoza and edamame were okay, the vienna, spider and yellow tail maki rolls were tasty. California roll was gross - it was shredded crab salad mix instead of a chunk of crab meat. Overall the fish quality wasn't the best and the rice in the maki rolls was a bit different - too fluffy. There are sushi places we much prefer over this one, and wouldn't go out of way to go back.
Review Source:Best latenight spot around.... the sushi is not amazing, but the service is outstanding, the atmosphere is nothing special, the korean food is VERY good....try the bulgogi, the tempura was decent, nothing amazing, overall a good spot to go at 10pm when there isnt much else open besides fast food....a good neighborhood spot though.
Overall a decent experience, nothing out of the ordinary and no complaints.
Thank the food gods! I now have a new sushi place close to home. If it weren't for my wife's coworkers, we never would have even known Fuji Ya existed. We stopped in on a whim as we were coming home from some Christmas shopping. We split an assorment of rolls and an order of edemame, and everything was delicious. The Philadelhia and Spider rolls was especially good. I will definitely be going back whenever I get a craving of some Japanese food, and now that I know they do take out, I will probably be picking up dinner at Fuji Ya pretty often.
Review Source:IF YOU LIKE SUSHI... you'll think this is just OK. This place is family run, and it's very laid back, the slow service kind of shows that. It's OK in a pinch, as it's near my house. But I'd much rather drive a little farther and go elsewhere for better food and service. The place is in a strip mall, and seating is a bit cramped.
Review Source:A great family-ran establishment! Â Sushi is fresh and flavorful, service is on point and the GOLDEN shrimp is to die for! Â
Fuji Ya takes a minimalistic approach to decor but pays full attention to the food being served. Â JR (one half of the brother duel that runs this restaurant) serves up decent cuts of sushi and has a knack for creating maki's that are pure delight. Â Golden shrimp is heart stopping, literally. Â The fried rice and veggies are great complements to the shrimp, flavorful enough but doesn't overstimulate your palette.
Food: I have to admit I am a little bit of a sushi snob and while this sushi would do in a pinch (for example, on Mondays, when my favorite sushi place is closed), I felt the fish could have been a little fresher and more flavorful. Â My friend loved the shrimp tempura roll he got, and we would probably go back because it did set the standard for shrimp tempura maki, but this is really just my back up place.
Atmosphere: I love that this is another little hole in the wall, but it could use a makeover. Â It's a little bit difficult to get past the worn-down, dive look when you're eating sushi.
Parking: Plenty of parking, as Fuji-Ya is located in a little strip mall, just off Harlem; ultimately, it's easy access.
Price: I was shopping for a cheaper sushi restaurant when I came across this place, so I paid close attention to price, portion size, etc. Â My final decision is that the price difference, (fifty cents here, a quarter there) wasn't worth sacrificing the difference in freshness and flavor and overall experience.
Service: Â Fast service, but I don't really recall it being ultra friendly. Â There were some regulars at the sushi bar who seemed comfortable with the staff, but nothing really stood out to me. Â Overall, I feel I should reiterate my ultimate conclusion - it's a good back up sushi joint.
I came here with four friends. Â I recommened this sushi restaurant because the other six I called don't serve from 2pm to 5pm. Â It's a mediocre little restaurant situated in a strip mall. Â Dull seating arrangement: The tables were lined up against the wall rather than than a few at the wall and a few centered throughout the restaurant. Â The long sushi bar could possibly seat an additional 8 to 14 people. Â Behind this bar is where the magic occurs.
The prices are astoundingly absurb: on average a 5-piece maki will cost you $6 and this won't get you full. Â I ordered a 5-piece Philadelphia Salmon and a 5-piece Spicy Salmon. Â If I weren't starved I would mention a thing or two about freshness and consistency. Â Otherwise everything was flavorful. Â The sake was interestingly strong. Â
I wouldn't recommend this place since I've had better.
Us being the delivered services queen & king of 60634 (yep, we even use Peapod sometimes, just to freak the neighbors out), you'll be shocked and amazed to find that we love FujiYa. And they do NOT deliver (or at least, we've not yet been able to convince them to do so).
Fujiya's owners are Korean, so along with fresh and delicious Japanese treats like sushi, sashimi, tempura, teriyaki, udon, etc - they also have some  Korean dishes on the menu - and some unique flavors and ideas in their selection of maki & hand rolls.
Everything we've had has been exquisite - some standouts include goma-ae (yum!), rainbow roll (pickled radish, crab, inari and different fish) , sake-kawa (crispy salmon skin, cucumber, avocado &masago), Â and JR Roll (ask JR!).
Worth a visit, not fancy - but reminds me a lot of some of my favorite sushi places in Vancouver BC authentic, clean and neat and focus on pristene, delicious food. (service was great, too!)
I was a little bit apprehensive to go and eat at this restaurant because it is located two or three doors down to a petco store. (The pet store looked very filthy inside and I'm glad that it is moving to a different location.)
Anyways, the restaurant took me by surprise with their friendly and fast service. The sushi were very good but i didn't like the soy sauce that they were serving. My boyfriend and I finished our platter so fast it was that good. Their Philidelphia rolls was what I liked best. The soup they served along with the platter were just ok. nothing really to brag about.
All in all this restaurant was not what I expected. Our check that day was a lil bit expensive but  I'll definitely go back again.
This by far is my favorite restaurant. Â Because sushi can get quite pricey I've had to limit myself to two or three visits a year. Â It's easy to walk out the here with a $100 tab and it's only me and my husband. Â He is such a sushi whor*. Â
We first started going to Fuji Ya at it's old location then it moved into a larger resturant in the strip mall near Pepi's Tacos. Â We went to so often we became well acquainted with the owner. Â
I love the Maki Rolls while my husband is more of a traditionalist. Â We've had everything from the gyoza to the udon, tempura, Benito boxes, hibachi/teriyaki combinations, and of course sushi. Â The Dragon Roll (eel, avocado, shrimp tempura, and cucumber) is my ultimate favorite.
One year for our anniversary I talked to the owner in advance to let him know we were coming and what the occasion was. Â I told him to roll out the red carpet and the sky was the limit. Â He made us several different kinds of maki rolls, sushi and other dishes that we would have never ordered on our own (due to lack of knowledge). Â It was the closest we and him (the owner) would get to participating in "Iron Chef". Â
I love this place!!!
Went here on a whim...pretty good sushi. The atmosphere is lacking a bit and some items are a bit pricey but overall not bad all. Â Kind of small so not great for a large group. Small parking lot can be a hassle if it's a busy shopping day like saturday afternoon. They have a few lunch specials but no sushi specials.
Review Source:A good sound sushi restaurant on Chicago's NW side (Actually located in Harwood Heights).  Is very reasonable and has excellent food.  One of the few sushi spots in the area.  They prepare all of the common rolls, including dragon, spicy tuna, spider, philly, etc.,  but shy away from the "signature" rolls, which  many other restaurants prepare, and usually carry a higher price tag.  I would recommend this place to anyone who lives near this part of the city, and have found that it is a great lunch spot as well as for takeout.  Although I have ventured to the eastern part of the city, I still find myself ordering from here when I visit my parents.
Review Source:My mom loves sushi but hates the hefty price tag of the stuff. Â So against my pleas, she dragged me to Fuji Ya. Â The place looked more like a greasy spoon then the a high quality establishment. Â There was no zen-like quality to the the place, no babbling fountain or bonsai tree. Â We sat at the counter and I prepared myself for the worst food poisoning in history. Â And surprise, the food wasn't the bad. Â It wasn't Sushiwabi grade, but it tasted good and didn't kill me. Â If you like to live dangerously and eat sushi, check this place out.
Review Source:Overall a pretty good Japanese place.
The sushi is ok, and prices for meals a good too. Â I think this place used to be a bit better when run by the original owner (the current owner is a a close relative to the original owner).
I think better and cheaper sushi can be purchased at the Japanese supermarket in Arlington Heights. Â However, this place has other great items on the menu which are excellent.
I only carry out here when I need a sushi fix and don't want to drive far. Â It's the only sushi place in the area. Â I really like their Soft shell crab maki and their asparagus beef roll is good too, but for the most part, their sushi is too expensive for not being really high quality. Â The chefs and servers there are always pleasant, but I'd rather go to a place where the sushi tastes better.
