I can't believe anyone would give this place 5 stars. Â Our steaks were underseasoned and overdone (medium rare and rare were ordered, both came out medium+). Â The side salad with dressing was ridiculous iceberg lettuce with a mealy tomato and the dressing was flavorless. Â Neither of us could figure out the aftertaste in the broccoli and the potatoes were cold. Â Part of our order never came and no one bothered to check.
I have absolutely no idea why anyone would go here with all the amazing steakhouses in Chicago. Â There is no "old-school" ambiance, there is no ambiance, period. Â
Clearly they are sliding by by the name alone, and when they realized they didn't have to produce quality food to keep customers, they just started skimping every place they could.
We wanted to try an "old-school" Chicago steakhouse, other than a chain, and we definitely got "old." Â We requested a table in the half-empty downstairs dining room and was told none were available. Â The downstairs room was still half-empty as we left 90 minutes later. Â The atmosphere downstairs was good, but definitely lacking upstairs. Â The server alerted us to the evening special: Surf & Turf - but he couldn't recall the size or the pricing, but assured us it was "a really good deal." Â The appetizers were average. Â The meals come with a house salad and cottage fries. Â Both were horrible, at best. Â The 14 oz. Filet Mignon was cooked medium rare to perfection, and was actually good. Â Â
If you're a regular at Gene & Georgetti's, as many of the guests appeared to be, and you enjoy the experience, then continue your patronage. Â But for those visiting the Windy City, there are too many other options, with considerably better food and service.
