Love it always a good time. Brian is always a good conversation. Great tap selection. Great wings.

The four square description of this place is dive bar and it's pretty spot on. It looks like someone took their house and turned it into a bar which is pretty cool when you think about it. I can confirm that the taps are still mostly craft and did have a couple of things, like the stone IPA with the expiration date, that I didn't expect to see. They do have a mug club but its no mug club that I've ever seen mainly because none of the mugs matched. Everything on draft was $5 each. I'm. It sure now much the Friday Night crowd was into craft beer but they seemed to be having a good time. I wish the locals around here had has interesting a tap list.

One of my favorite bars in the world. Pretty much douche and drama free with great beer. I love the Golden Rail. Keep up the good work.

Ended the night here after bar hopping a few nights back. It was the only bar that had Oban from all of the ones that we stopped by that night and it was a good way to wind down.

Quite honestly, if it weren't for the fact that I've chosen this night, of all nights, to end my recent boozer ways (unbeknownst to my friend, who came along for what I can only assume to be an interesting and entertaining ride), I may have not given this spot 4 stars (since I only stayed for one drink). However, my experience up here was a lot of fun and this was the perfect place to relax after a hard night's worth of "Cruisin' n Boozin'." Goodbye Hedonistic living, Hello Gyms and Sunday Brunches (Maybe Mega Brunch!). This spot was a perfect ending.

    *****

The night air was crisp and fresh as we drove into the parking lot and walked in. We were greeted with a huge American flag that was hung on the classic wooden bar banister. The juke box was blaring sweet rock songs and above on the second floor were three patrons shooting the ol' 8 ball. This was my sort of place, I thought.

The bartender greeted us with a big smile. I started to recall my youth and early teenage years going on road trips throughout the South, Middle America and towards the West with my family. Even as a teen, I had wandered into rural areas on day trips with my brother. This place reminded me of the standard dive, but rather than a Confederate flag, it had a huge American flag. Chalk it up to the Nor'east. After you spend too much time in metropolitan areas, you forget that there are these sorts of awesome outposts scattered alongside highways.

Order of the night: Oban and a Golden beer... or Baileys on Ice (things were a little fuzzy at this point). Really quick service. Generous with the liquor. Can't remember how much it was, but it couldn't have been expensive.

We walked out to the front patio. Pitch black sky spotted with stars as far as the eye can see. Two girls were sitting outside on the wooden benches, chatting. One of the girls' boyfriend starting chatting with us. Two people started laughing and yelling about someone making an amazing shot on the pool table inside. They were talking to their friends from the upstairs window and were genuinely happy. It seemed like a lot of fun. Happiness is contagious and I tend to like atmospheres of the sort. You can tell when people are truly down to earth and genuinely having a good time, or if they're bored with their lives and start to become vindictive and sarcastic about it. I may get bored a lot, but I choose to stay where the good and genuine people are. I would've wanted to stay here a while if it weren't for the fact that my friend was tired and had to drive us back.

Very friendly place. Definitely a spot to go in and kick back a few, shoot some pool and hang out with your friends. Recommended.

As others have said, the beer selection is relatively decent, but not spectacular...I've yet to get a decent IPA, but that probably relates to my second comment: I've yet to have a bartender here (3 visits) that will utter anything meaningful to me. I've asked each time about what IPAs they have on tap, the bartender points his finger to the same IPA that I've had on my 3 visits.  Really? There are no other IPAs on tap?  And, if that's the only one that's on tap, how about suggesting another if there's a bottle to be had? I just don't understand how people are willing to patronize bars/restaurants with terrible service. I keep returning in the hopes that someone will actually treat me like I'm keeping their business running, but I am not betting on that happening anytime soon.  As soon as I find another bar that serves something other than the standard domestics, the Golden Rail will be a thing of the past.

Amazing beer selection, and the price is right! The pints are usually $4-$5, which is a good deal, other bars in the area will charge $6 for microbrews. The only food I've tried from their small menu is the wings, and they are great, some of the best wings in the area, in my opinion. I like them really hot, and they make them so when I ask! The dive bar atmosphere is laid back and friendly, it's easy to strike up a conversation with the other patrons or the bartenders. They have board games to play like Connect 4 and Trouble. They also have a pool table. Overall, a relaxed place to enjoy some good beer!

Not much to say that hasn't already been said.

They have the largest selection of beer in the area, 20 taps constantly rotating and numerous bottled beers. They even get some limited run beers like the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series. Beers on tap are usually served in the appropriate glass for proper presentation(traditional pint, goblet, flute, etc.)

Food is always good. Pretty well known for the wings and chili.

Staff is always friendly. Its a family run business.

I've only been to the Golden Rail once, but I can't wait to go back. I'm bummed that I can't do much other than echo the previous reviews:

    1. The beer selection is tremendous, and they're all about serving each type of beer in the right glass for perfect presentation. They've got loads of great stuff in bottles and on tap, and there's always something good to try.

    2. The wings are awesome. I'm a big wing fan, and these are probably my favorite wings in the area. I've heard of better wings out there, but these are hot, a good level of spicy, and just awesome.

    3. The bar on the whole seems pretty chilled out and relaxed.

If this place was closer to me, I'd probably be there a lot more. Also, I wish they took credit cards - not like it's a big deal, but it wouldn't hurt.

I stopped by this bar last night (20 June 07), as it had gotten some decent reviews and me and my friends were looking for a place to chill.

I must say, this is a great bar, particularly for Newburgh.  The beer selection, as others have noted, is very extensive.  There are choices for everyone, and the prices reasonable.

The atmosphere there is pretty laid back - it seemed like a lot of regulars there, but everyone is treated well by the staff.

Upstairs has a pool area, and there was a crowd there, but not too many.  I expect this place fills up well on the weekend, and gets a following on weeknights.

All in all, a nice establishment (though it looks a little rough on the outside).  I will be heading back here, as it's hard to find a good local bar around here.

The Golden Rail Ale House is a very good bar. It has a very down-home everyone knows your name type feel. More often than not the crowd is usually working class folk who like enjoy a cold brew and a good conversation. Also, if you like to avoid bars in the Newburgh that are overrun by sometimes irritating college age patrons this is a good choice for you. Granted that is coming from a 22-year-old but I've found the people who usually visit the bar to be friendly and not at all overbearing.

As far as the beer selection goes, it cannot be beat. The have over 32 beers in tap as well as a numerous amount in bottles. For the everyday domestic beer drinking this may be intimidating but the wait-staff is always willing to explain and let you sample the beer before purchasing a pint. The prices are fairly reasonable. Approximately 3-5 dollars for a pint domestic beer and anywhere from 5 dollars to 13 dollars for some of their imported specialties. Brian and most of the bartenders here know their stuff and treat you with respect instead of throwing a drink at you without even saying hello  or thank you.

Also for you smokers there is a nice patio where you can bring your drink outside and benches and tables to rest it on.

Some of the things I've noticed that aren't going to ruin a night but may turn away some of the more picky bar-dwellers:
    1. In the summertime, the air conditioning is usually  on incredibly high so bring an extra sweater for you or the lady.
    2. Bathrooms are clean but sometimes smell not so clean.
    3. Some of the bartenders even after receiving good tips will not give buy-backs.

Those are the only things wrong with the bar really.

Bottom line is if you are looking for a place to meet up with friends without being hassled by bouncers or annoyed by drunken co-eds this is the bar for you. Very down to earth people and the best beer selection in the land.

UPDATE: This is still a great bar, just don't go around thanksgiving, you will meet the entire Newburgh Free Academy classes of 2000-2002. That is all.

This has got to be the most chill bar ever. They have an awesome selection of beers, really good bar food (the fries rock), some free stuff and some not free stuff to do, and an atmosphere that can't be beat.

For the free stuff, there's Bumper Pool, Darts, and pretty much every board game you could want to play. You're probably thinking who plays board games while drinking? Lemmie tell you Battleship is a ton of fun.

For the paid stuff: there's Pool, a Juke Box, Golden Tee, and the little video game machine (Erotic Photo Hunt anyone....we held the top score for quite some time).

There are also resident experts on all the bar games there. Most notably "Bob" the pool shark has taught me everything I know about bumper pool. Brian, the owner, is not too shabby either.

All in all its a great place to meet-up with friends and just chill.

p.s. It was in the movie Super Troopers.

This bar rocks!!! Mostly because its a chill place to hang out and play bumper pool.  They have amazing french fries and the beer is always good too.  Also, it was in the movie Super Troopers which is awesome.  If you are into fancy, expensive, snobby bars, head down to the river.  But if you are looking for a cool place to just hang out, go to the Rail.
