We stopped here on the way to Coindre Hall as it's on the way and looked like a good place to grab a quick sandwich.
Skipped the fish tacos, but opted for a lobster roll and Bird in the Hand which is a generously portioned chicken salad sandwich on wheat bread.
Service was quick and friendly. The woman behind the counter took out a dog dish and filled it with fresh water for our waiting puppy. I thought that was really sweet of her.
To my surprise and chagrin, the lobster roll {while generously filled} was a hot dog bun! Like a Wonder Bread hot dog bun! I was expecting at least a solid Costco size hoagie roll for my $20! That being said, the flavor was good. A better deal was had with the chicken salad sandwich.
Service is great. Sandwiches are decent. Lobster roll is a profligate wastrel.
Cold Spring Harbor's place you always stop in for something.
The original ownership had changed years back and added a lot to their menu.. Â It to me is still more of a coffee to go place, but has its lunch fans.
They used to have some great flavored coffee (chocolate rasberry long gone) and the best french bread on Long Island... I kid you not. Â They would sell you buttered pieces of it, along with their homemade cookies when buying coffee.
They still make great homemade cookies to go with your coffee.
Ice cream in summer (not homemade but convenient) and chocolate candy on high chocolate holy days... ie: Valentines and Easter. lol
Stopped by here for lunch while driving to Caumsett state park (which btdubs is beauuuuutiful!) and had a very nice lunch here. This place is definitely not fancy by any means, but it's cute and cozy and feels very local.
Of course we had to try their famous fish tacos (2 for 12 bucks) along with a BLT. Both were good, but personally I did not think they were outstanding. I wouldn't drive an hour out to have these, in other words. There are too many other places in nyc that have good fish tacos!
The BLT was good, crispy toast, plenty of lettuce, juicy tomatoes and crunchy bacon, all for around 9 bucks.
I did like the fact that they had so many little areas-like candy section, xmas section, ice cream bar? and a soup and drink section. I appreciate the character of the place.
My friend and I were visiting Cold Spring Harbor and were surprised by a sandwich board advertising Best Fish Tacos according to Newsday. This greatly intrigued me because I am a fish taco obsessive and I have gone to lengths to try as many as I can. Â We were seated in the back of the place, which is sort of like a sit down deli if you can imagine it. Â There are plastic outdoor furniture for seats inside which I thought was unusual. This is juxtaposed by the many knickknacks and antique items you will find decorating the store. Â Checking out the menu, I see that the fish tacos cost $11.95 for two tacos not including side dishes. Wow! Those are some pricey tacos.. but for "the best fish tacos" I was willing to dish out $12. Â The server was very polite and helpful, which was a plus. Â The TWO fish tacos come out with a small ramekin of mango salsa on the side. Â The tacos themselves: well, lets say they didn't really live up to expectations. They have a very watery slaw on top which tastes overly sweet and overly acidic at the same time. Â The fish fillet doesn't really deserve to be called that because in reality, the fish were really just small nuggets fried to a crisp. Â Perhaps an off day? Â I've had better fish tacos in worse places, as you will see if you read my many reviews about them.. Â the search continues.
Review Source:Home of the best fish taco as per Newsday. I think it is hard to really say you have the best anything since it is often subjective. I went with my friend Critty as she is a BIG fish taco lover. I am really not a fish lover, but I thought it was good enough. The fish was crispy and light it had a chipotle mayo and a lot of red cabbage slaw atop it. However it was priced at $12 for 2 fish tacos and all it came with was some mango salsa. I think this is a bit steep considering the place is not really nice on the inside..I mean their bathroom is in the basement and kinda dirty looking, LOL! I will also say the fish taco was very salty and very sweet at the same time, left me with a bit of a belly ache and I only ate half a fish taco.
Review Source:Found this place through Yelp. Driving through CSH, it looks like a market. It seems to have grown from the ground up, starting as a quaint little shoppe, gradually adding coffee, then food; but keeping the old-fashioned look to it. (I have no idea if this is the history, it just SEEMS that way to me.)
Drinks are self-serve, which encourages you to wander around the store, which sells tchatchkes, local art, and gourmet-ish foods and candies. Seating is limited, but the hostess is there to help you find a place. It's a nice, friendly, quaint environment.
Food is good. Not amazingly gourmet. Rather, more like basic sandwiches made with care and thought about the ingredients. They were out of chicken nuggets when we went, so "kiddie fare" is limited. The Thin Crust Pizza was just what you'd expect. The hamburger was good. The Fish Tacos, for which this place is famous, are Very good.
I'd have given it 3 stars, except for the friendly and quaint staff, and the good coffee.
the gourmet whaler is a great spot to stop and have lunch. it's casual, comfortable, yummy, and reasonably priced. the service is always quick and pleasant and there are irresistible baked goods (the homemade carrot cake is at least six inches tall and coated in the most amazing cream cheese frosting). it's unpretentious and comfortable, a great and much-needed addition to dining options in cold spring harbor.
plenty of vegetarian options are great, too!
My friends and I stumbled upon this place while looking for lunch on a drive around Long Island. We were hoping for harbor views, and while they didn't have that, this place more than made up for it in character and deliciousness.
Two of us got the fish tacos, which were very good. The fish was lightly breaded and included a colorful cole slaw and a mango salsa, and altogether it was delicious.
Our waitress was friendly and helpful. I was especially impressed that she seemed to know all of the locals who came in - I guess the town is just that kind of place.
This was a very cute place that I could see being especially vibrant in the summer when people can grab ice cream or cold drinks while walking around.
Also, the Whaler is right down the road from the ACTUAL cold spring. When you see people crowded around a PVC pipe near the boat ramp, don't go asking them what they are doing. Just know that this is the cold spring, and if you ask what they are doing, they will make fun of you. When we were there, there was quite a line to fill up at the spring, but if you go early in the morning, they said the line wasn't as bad.
After strolling along Main Street, visiting the Whimsey and other shops along the way, I came upon the Gourmet Whaler. Â It it brimming with charm, excellent coffee, home made pies, fudge and candies. Â The cafe's menu is well balanced with soups, sandwiches etc, all homemade and wonderful. Â This shop is under new management, I had the pleasure of meeting the new owners they were most accomodating. Â The cheese assortment is awesome, Hot & Sweet Cheddar, Â etc. Â You have to give this great shop a try.. Â its awesome!
Review Source:Nice casual place to have lunch at reasonable prices, I had the curried chicken salad sandwich on a potato roll, served with potato chips (good ones, whatever brand they are) ($7.95) and my daughter had the grilled cheese, also with chips ($5.50) The menu features a variety of items, soup and specialties - darn wish I could remember them, since I could not find a website for this place I'll tell you from memory they included Gazpacho, lobster roll and grilled chicken, even a hot dog. The service was friendly and we were happy with our lunches.
Drinks, from the soda case, about $2-$2.50 a piece, included sodas, Snapple, and my artisan blueberry soda from Maine - refreshing.
I liked that the tables included napkins, straws, sweetener, utensils - all the stuff you would have to ask for - right on the table. Someone was thinking. And there are cute little whale S&P shakers too.
The decor is a little shabby-chic painted in light blue with real starfish decorating the walls and off-white and pastel blue tables.
You can also just stop in for coffee, ice cream or a beverage here - just right for whenever you're in Cold Spring Harbor or even just passing through. I will be back.
So here's the deal. If you search on the internet, you'd not think that this place was here. I only discovered it in it's current form, as the Gourmet Whaler. Searching on the 111 Main address on the internets you'll find that it used to be called Gourmet Goddess. The owner today informed me that she recently took this place over and is in the process of making it her own. The way I found it? In between dinner at Graffiti Cafe in Woodbury and dessert at Prime Huntington, my constant search for coffee shops took me and a friend for a stroll through Cold Spring Harbor, and there it was.
What a gem. For real. A large space, the Gourmet Whaler contains a coffee selection, ice cream parlor, dessert bar, candy shop, and a unique gift shop. Separate "rooms" are themed, and well laid out, so you can meander through the store checking out the foodstuffs and knickknacks. The knickknacks are very feminine. Definitely a shop my mom, sister and female friends would love to peruse.
Very friendly shop owners and staff as well. They appear to make all the desserts onsite with varying selections by day. The only food we sampled was the rugelach cookies. This was my first time trying them although my friend was familiar with them. He said they were decent, not the best he's ever had. I thought it was pretty good, tasted to me like a combination of cinnamon toast crunch and raisin bran in a pastry cookie. I sampled coffee they called German Coffee Cake. I liked it very much.
Although it's hard for me to make an informed, in depth review based on my limited sample, I'm gonna start off with 4-stars for this place for it's charm and for what they are trying to do there. Love the tables outside, love the little mini Ice Cream Parlor inside, and the staff seems like the kind of people who want to create personal relationships with their customers.
My only negative feedback is that they aren't doing much in the way of getting their name out there. I couldn't find them in an internet search, no website seems to exist, and searching for their address and information on the internet still brings up the old name. Hopefully since they are relatively new, they will be advertising and branding. I'd like to see this place stay in business so I can return to sample the ice cream and desserts!
Give this place a shot - please. There's something there for everyone.
