Dropped in here for lunch the other day. Enjoyed my meal and plan to return.
Prices are decent; food was excellent. Portion sizes are large, so come with an appetite, share a meal, or ask for a box. The 'soup and salad' or 'pick-3' options are great for first-time customers. Â
Word of advice: The restuarant is deli-like and tables fill up quickly, so get there early to get a good seat.
Good place to catch up with old friends. We'll be returning. :)
If you happen to be in the Northeast Detroit suburbs and are looking for an unusual treat (at least for Detroit) for lunch, try Gumbo's in downtown Mt. Clemens. Â The New Orleans Gumbo and Jambalaya are excellent representatives for Louisiana cooking. Â And they should be since the family who moved to the cold climate but brought their recipes with them. Â The restaurant is a small storefront affair and is open for lunch and only on Friday do they stay open for the dinner crowd. Â We stopped by on a Friday for lunch and found a short line waiting for tables or takeout. Â It was worth the short wait.
Try the New Orleans Medley and you can pick three choices from among the six that are offered -- New Orleans Gumbo, Crawfish & Shrimp Etoufee, Cajun Pasta, Red Beans & Rice, Jambalaya and Shrimp Creole. Â It's a good introduction and you should have a portion large enough to satisfy. Â There are plenty of other non-Cajun choices, salads, great sides like fried okra and homemade bread pudding.
And don't expect a large bill. Â The portions are generous and a great value.
My first trip to Gumbo's was a long time coming. The hours are the only reason this is not a 5 star establishment. Not being open on weekends except for special events and closing at 6pm most nights means Gumbo's is going to be an unfortunately rare treat.
Let's start with the excellent: the hush puppies were amazingly flavorful, the etouffee was fantastic, the red beans and rice were flavorful and nicely spiced, the cocktail sauce was flavorful with a great horseradish bite.
For the good: the shrimp and catfish were nicely cooked and not greasy but when placed on a piece of waxed paper on the plate the coating got a touch soggy, the fries were flavorful but not evenly cooked resulting in some crunchy and some soft/soggy. The gumbo was a bit thin both in flavor and texture
The service was great, very helpful and prompt.
Now if we could only extend those hours...
Gumbo's has the best creole I've had outside the south and it's no wonder.
Having been here more than a few times, I'm told that indeed, it's a business started by a family who moved to Michigan from about 45 mins. south of Birmingham, Al.
Everything I have had is perfect. Portions are massive. They have hush puppies made by hand, a chalkboard of daily specials / new items (which don't appear on their website, possibly ever) and a really rockin' gumbo.
If I had to suggest anything for first timers, the Cajun Pasta and any of their Po' Boys (Psst. Catfish!)
Needless to say, I'll be going here often. Why aren't you!?
A Â relatively new business to Mount Clemens.
A sparse offering of Cajun cuisine - the menu is simple. Â I ordered the combination and received decent cajun cooking.
Prices are decent for a decent meal. Â I hope they expand their offerings a bit as customer traffic picks up!
I will be a repeat customer.
