A year and a half ago I would have given this place a 5 star review, sad to say that the food is very expensive, but quality has gone down and cheap! Not sure if its under new ownership or a new chef. But things are not the same. The place always has looked like a dive bar, but the food was worth the wait and look and feel. now it is a real dive!
Review Source:Well, who knew? I saw Halftime Tavern listed when I did a search for Vancouver fine dining. I drive past this place all the time and just thought it was an old bar. Well, it IS an old bar- been a family business since 1903! Â Currently one must be 21 to enter, but they said within a few weeks they will be allowing younger folks to dine until 9pm. I can bring my teenager with us next time.
Plenty of parking, and friendly folks. Pool tables. Large screen televisions. Plentiful bar and enough choices on the menu to please everyone. No, not really "fine' dining, but the food certainly is good! And plentiful.
My husband had the Sunday night special of prime rib, salad, mashed potatoes and garlic bread for $15.00. Good stuff. Appies were coconut shrimp with a tasty chili garlic sauce. Very good- not overdone and rubbery like you sometimes get. Chips and home-made salsa were good too.
I had the blue cheese/pepper-jack burger with fries. The burger was massive! I could not finish it. Well, I COULD have but it would have hurt. Very tasty combination and the burger was so juicy and flavorful. The fries were amazing. Super crispy without being too hard, not greasy at all. A nice surprise.
I splurged on a blueberry lemon drop- complete with fresh muddled berries. They make 'em potent here- be warned! lol
A great surprise to find this in our area. Will definitely be back.
A great reminder to not judge a book by it's cover!
This place came up on a top ten list on Yelp when I searched "Best restaurants in Vancouver"! It should be no surprise that a dive bar serves amazing food! This is what you might expect from a very nice higher end  restaurant not a bar...black interior, pink lights, and balls cracking on the pool tables. Loved it!
My boyfriend had the prime rib and said it was incredible. Â I had the special of chicken parmigiana, oh my! Our meals started with cold, crisp salads plus a little veggie tray. My chicken was perfectly cooked with a lovely marinara sauce topped with melted mozzarella cheese, perfectly steamed broccoli with herb butter, pasta and garlic bread. It was way too much food! I was stuffed after half the meal! ... Lunch the next day!
If you haven't yet tried the Halftime Tavern, go there for a nicely made drink and a seriously delicious meal! I think both our entrees were $20.
Stopped in on a whim one night after work and was so pleasantly surprised. My boyfriend was wanting steak and having just left work I was in no mood to cook so we popped by the halftime since it was so close to home and I've never been so surprised by what we got. Â The service was great and the $15 prime rib special was just amazing. Â The clam chowder and chicken tortilla soups are also great and the chocolate cake is simply to die for. Â The looks of the place are definitely deceiving so don't let it's local bar appearance keep you from an awesome meal :D
Review Source:First time there tonight after reading the reviews here. I thought the food was great!..and our server was awesome. Friendly and accommodating...as others have mentioned I probably wouldn't have gone in had I not read the reviews,so thanks for an accurate description. We will go back.
Review Source:Our friends took us to the Halftime last Saturday night and I was was so surprised. Â First of all that after living in the Salmon Creek area for 5 years we had never heard of it. Â Our waitress was outstanding. Â There were six in our group and we were a bit rowdy but the waitress just played along. Â It was kind of funny that they had linens on the table in one section like it was a fine dining restaurant and there is a pool table sitting right int he middle of that room but our food was superb. Â I had the Filet Oscar, started with the spicy sausage soup and a baked potato. Â The soup was really good, homemade not soup base stuff like you get at a lot of places. Â The Filet was so tender and cooked perfect. Â My husband being spaghetti fan had the Filet and Spaghetti, I know he loved both of them also the Spaghetti sauce was not sweet like you find at so many places. Â Two our friends had the Prime Rib Sandwich with tater tots which they loved. Â One had the special which was chicken enchiladas and he thought they were better than any he's had at Mexican joints around here. Â The last person in our group started with the Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail which he stated before we even left for dinner he was going to order and NOT share which he didn't. Â It looked amazing. Â He had the Halibut sandwich and claimed it is his favorite. Â I can't wait to go back again although no one under 21 is allowed in so we will have to feed our kiddo pizza or something and leave her at home. Â I am glad that we found this gem so close to home.
An update on The Halftime, they recently changed their menu and are no longer have the tater tots which several of our friends loved and for the summer they don't have baked potatoes which is sad because I love baked potatoes but the prime rib dip is still good.
The folks were friendly and we were seated right away. Â The host took our beverage orders and those were delivered right away also. Â The waitress was also very friendly and brought us some veggies to munch on after taking our order. Â Then we waited. Â Usually, I don't make it through a glass of wine before our meal is delivered, but this time I was way ready for a second. Â I ordered prime rib, rare, which, although I know shouldn't be hot, it wasn't even warm. Â The mixed vegetables were mediocre. Â My husband had the sauteed prawns and they were okay, but not great. Â The best part of the meal was the salad dressing (ranch and bleu cheese tasted fresh and home made) and the garlic bread. Â For the price, I'd rather eat at Beaches. Â Maybe we'll go back for burgers, but doubt that we'll eat dinner again. Â Overall, pretty disappointing.
Review Source:We've been make a few more times. The dinner special of the evening is about $25 which seems expensive for the tavern. It appears that their prices have crept up. The halibut fish and chips is now $16 for 4 nice pieces. The prme rib sandwich is $14 but appears to have shrunk in size.
While the food has been good our impression is that they are pushing the prices a bit high for the clientele. We will likely reduce our visits.
Two stars for the recent changes. We have been going here for a few years now because the food was really good and so were the prices. We recently went in to watch a football game and have dinner. It was odd the place was nearly empty. Only one couple was eating. We asked the server if she could turn up the sound on the tv so we could hear the game. She informed us that they would no longer turn up the sound of any games. She even went and asked the manager and he said no. We were the only people there! We then noticed the price increases on the menu. The server said the prices went up a week prior. I mentioned that the name of the place was Halftime, inferring a sports bar. Then I jokingly asked if they were now fine dining. She was very nice about the whole thing and was a great server. The service has always been great (five stars). And so has the food. Sad to see the changes and the price increase. Probably won't be back.
Review Source:I have driven by here hundreds of times, but thought it was just a bar. Â A friend of mine had dinner here a while back and told me she was really impressed. Â Last Friday night, we were looking for a restaurant in Hazel Dell, and decided to give it a try. Â We rolled in at about 6:30 pm.
The decor is interesting. Â We sat in a very large room with tables around the perimeter. Â Tablecloths on the tables and candles burning. Â Very dark. Â Two pool tables sat in the middle of the room. Â Surprisingly, two guys started playing pool midway through our dinner. Â Even more surprising, it didn't bother us. Â The acoustics in this place are great. Â Even though it was fairly crowded, and guys were playing pool, we could easily carry on a conversation. Â Oh, and there were a couple of TV's up in the corner. Â We watched golf.
They have Mac 'n Jack on tap. Â This is always a huge plus for us. Â We looked at the wine list and it wasn't as impressive. Â Other people in the restaurant were having mixed drinks and they have an extensive bar menu. Â We stuck to beer.
Our meal consisted of fish and chips and soup/salad. Â The entree portions are large. Â It seems kind of pricey, but you get a lot of food. Â They are the kind of entrees you can (and probably should) consider sharing. Â The meal included a tray of veggies and dip to start. Â The food was very good.
The bar area looked really large and there appeared to be even more tables on the other side of the restaurant and in the back.
Our waiter appeared to be fairly new. Â But, he was attentive and helpful. Â The service was great.
Tablecloths, pool tables, candles, tv. Â An odd combination, but it works.
I will go back.
I have lived near the Halftime for about 10 years now, and have seen it go through a few changes (mostly for the better). The owners went away from running the place as a bar with food, to a restaurant/steakhouse/pub. Â They removed a few pool tables and neon signs, opening up the space a bit. No longer are they open late into the night. Â The ambiance is a bit dark, what with black walls and a few dark tinted windows. Â But over all, its a decent place to go for some really good, reasonably priced grub.
The menu is HUGE! Â Tons of sandwich options, along with a wide variety of entrees. Â Everything I've had has been pretty darn good. Â Most menu items are around 8-10 bucks, and portions are large to HUGE (depending on what you order) making it very worth your $$. Â I am also impressed with their improved plating presentation. They really want to be a nice restaurant, but are stuck in this old run down building that they can't remodel. Â So they do the best they can and are doing it well! The service is always speedy and attentive, too!
Overall: a GREAT AND COSISTANT place to go for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
I took my entire family  of six adults out for lunch this past Sunday. As usual we get in the car and wonder where the heck to go. My wife mentioned Half Time went back to being a restaurant and she had a good lunch there with her coworkers not long ago.
We gave them a try, the place was nearly empty at 12:45PM.
I had Chicken Parmesan, a few had the Prime Rib Dip (I think that is what they called it), one of my boys had their signature burger with ham, egg, and bacon on it (heart attack food), and my wife had a club sandwich. Â
Everyone gave a thumbs up, I heard no complaints and from my family and this is a rarity. Â On the other hand, Vancouver is generally not known for fine dining so we may have all been overwhelmed that we actually found a place that didn't suck. Â
The waitress was attentive.
Prices were fair (not low, not high).
Atmosphere was dark old tavern which was the only negative.
Overall, it was the best choice in the area and we will go back again and try breakfast.
I've gone to the Halftime Tavern for both lunch and dinner and it's consistently good. The prime rib special is one of the best, and also makes for a great French Dip or Philly Sandwich. The Burgers (and portion sizes in general) are HUGE.
During lunch service, the wait is fairly short and the servers are very attentive. Dinner service can be hit or miss and it's a bit noisier at night.
The bar serves Fireball (and Jaeger) on chilled taps.
I can't get over how much I LOVE the breakfast here. I wish there was a place like this in SW Portland. I have only been in for "brunch" on weekends so I'm not sure how the bar gets at night, but this is def my kind of place to hang out! GREAT food, pool tables, good music, and sports. If they could throw in some classic rock cover bands on Friday or Saturday night I wouldn't need anything else! Someone kiss that cook!!!!
Review Source:We were seeking out the best Bloody Mary in Vancouver and went here based on a Yelp reviewer who called it, "The Church of the Bloody Mary." Even though it's dark and little divey, Halftime has a lot of charm. It has a good story, having been around since 1903. Bill, the general manager and bartender, took good care of us and made us feel very welcome. These Bloody Marys are exceptionally good with a tangy taste unlike most. It was disappointing that they were $9.50 with a Lukosowa Vodka (a slight upgrade), even though that is one of the cheapest 2nd-tier vodkas on the market. But still, I would go back for them again and again. We didn't try any food this time but it was an excellent menu and it seems like they put a lot of care into their cooking.
There are several pool tables and many TVs so it would be a good place to hole up for some gaming.
For the purpose of full disclosure, I have to say I am biased towards the Halftime. Since we started going some 6 years ago, it has been our favorite place to eat and/or drink on the west side of Vancouver.
Three of us went to dinner on 4/30 and arrived around 6:45p. The place was packed!!! It's really nice to see the change in clientele that has occurred over the past couple of years. The owner is working hard to make the Halftime much more of a restaurant and shake the "tavern" tag. Not sure I'm in full agreement with that, but the word is certainly out about the quality of meal you will receive here.
Anyway, back to our evening. Of the available tables, we chose one where we could watch the end of the Mariners game. I believe they have two or three converter boxes and can show multiple games, but can't change just one TV without it affecting a few others. We were greeted promptly as always and drinks arrived right away. My wife and our friend each had fresh fruit martinis (pineapple and blueberry respectively) and the strawberry martini was tried later. I kept things much simpler.
We ordered dinner. The Schwarzkopf steak for me, prime rib for my wife, and peppercorn steak for our friend. Here's where it gets tricky......with the recent changes, The Halftime now has probably 40% more seating.....but the kitchen is the same size. On a busy Saturday night, this meant dinner took quite a while to arrive. This was NOT a big deal for us as we were enjoying our drinks and conversation, but I can see how it would be an issue for other customers. I do believe they are working on growing the kitchen, but you should plan a little extra time if going for dinner on a Fri/Sat. evening.
The Schwarzkopf was ordered medium rare and prepared perfectly. I had it with a baked potato and a cup of clam chowder.
We do love this place and most of the people who work there. It is a very comfortable environment and you simply can not beat the food they serve!!
I've been here several times now. My mom had been talking about how awesome this place was for months and I'm glad I finally tried it; it's a total hidden gem. You would never expect from the outside of the building what an amazing little place was there.
The inside is probably one of the cleanest little hole in the wall bars I've ever seen, so it automatically shruggs off it's bad persona right away. There is plenty of seating and the gals that took our orders each time were always extremely nice and attentive. Â The menus are beyond huge as well as the portions; I am never able to finish even half of my food.
The food is also priced extremely reasonable. Â My breakfast was under $10, and dinner has always been under $15. Definitely a great place, actually one of my new favorites. I have a bad feeling I'm going to end up here atleast once a week from now on. It's in a convenient place, I've never had to wait for a seat, and the food is fantastic. Â Definitely try the Prime Rib, its delish.
I NEVER WOULD HAVE NEVER GONE HERE IF IT WEREN"T FOR MY FRIENDS AT WORK!
But I am glad that I did.
I drive past this place all the time and it really struck me as the typical bar-fly hang out. No windows and reeks of beer, right? Wrong!
I was really surprised by the service and the food/ Looks like your typical sports bar but the food is excellent. The flat iron steak special and the prime rib special are awesome.
The drinks are affordable and average. Will certainly plan to go back.
I don't have too much to say about this place. I went with a fairly large group of people for breakfast. The bar is a bit too sporty for my taste, but it's called Halftime, right? Our server was really nice, the food came out pretty quick. I wasn't that hungry so I ordered the lite fare... It said it was half of their regular breakfast plate. I wonder what the full size is like!!! My friend ordered a burger that was the size of his head. Hefty portions, that's for sure. The prices were pretty low, the food was pretty good, my tummy was happy, everything was just all right! You go, Halftime Tavern, wish you were in Seattle, so I can come more often :)
Review Source:My parents come here almost every sunday with group of friends. They call it the church of the Bloody Mary's. I tag along once a month or so. It's the Highlight of my weekend. Â As you can imanage the bloody mary's are quite good. My favorite dish is Chicken Fried steak which us amazing every time.
Review Source:I know, out of the way, not the normal type of place that I might review BUT this place has INCREDIBLE FOOD AND SERVICE!
Yes, some of the best...anywhere! It is a bit of a dive from the outside but it is extremely clean and they have a HUGE menu with long time staff and they serve some of the best food you would ever want!
Go try it....You will LOVE it!
