I have become a fan of Healy's Westside. It's bright, full of pretty wood, not usually so overcrowded that you want to punch people in the face, and the bathrooms are well maintained (hey, I want a nice clean toilet seat). The beer selection is far better than another big bar on he strip I shall not name here.
The atmosphere is welcoming, there's a decent amount of places to sit, and during the St. Patrick parade on Madison is has nice big windows for people watching.
I would recommend checking this place out. Oh, and tip your bartenders. They are pretty rad.
Great open space with lots of windows. Â I like the feel of the place. Long history in forest park to, so even though it's newer space you feel nostalgic. Â You have to wonder why isn't this place more crowded.
One BIG problem, the place reeks of sewer gas. WTF, really you went cheap on the plumbing....
Last three times I was there it stunk like rotten eggs, it blows my mind that anyone was even in there...last time I went there was just to see if it smelled because it seemed to me this was an obvious problem with an easy fix, guess what it still did. 1 beer and out.
I am posting this as PSA to the owners because you must not visit your bar. Fix your plumbing, line the pipes, get a leak sensor, do something.
Post a sign letting us know it's new and improved and I will be back, otherwise I will stick to the bars with normal expected gross bar smells. Â Thanks for your consideration.
Huge bar, great beer selection, decent crowd, BUT the bartender I had didn't know sh*t about beer. For a place with such a nice selection of brewskis I would think the bartenders know what the f an IPA is, or at least be able to comment on different brews.
Regardless, great place and I'd definitely go back!
Been hitting Healy's since they were located a couple doors down. Still a great place to go but have to say while it's a step up from the old place it can get really loud and the beer selection is just OK.
Great place to go with a group of people but if you're going as a couple you may be dissappointed. Also parking as usual on the strip can be a nightmare.
Let me start off by warning you, if you go here on a Sunday (let's say to watch football) you have to pay the parking meters. Is it me or is that insane? Sunday parking meter pay? What? Ugh. So one $20 ticket later, here's my review: This place is MASSIVE. So that's one thing. The food is above par bar food. The staff seemed to only be concerned with their usual/regular customers. Other than that, typical Forest Park Irish bar. Not much else to say.
(I did not take the ticket into consideration of my 3star review)
This place is so much fun! It has a fun open feel that is extra fun filled with crazy sports fans. The staff is always nice, the drinks are always good - as is the food.
Once I came and ordered a burger with bleu cheese and was entirely surprised to find the burger on a pretzel bun! YUMMO!
Thanks Healy's! You guys are great : )
Tip: During the summertime they open up their huge windows and it feels like the bar is out-doors : )
As others have noted the layout is a bit weird but if you have a seat at the bar with three or less you are OK. More than that and get a table. Â Food was just OK. Â Even a burger had strange bacon (go ahead and charge more since those prices are up but don't make me eat whatever that was) and the olives were too big. Â Chopped should mean small not chunks. Â Chips were right out of a Jay's or Lay's bag.2.5
Review Source:Good, comfortable bar-food in an inviting, inclusive atmosphere. Â Seems like a really good mix of young people, working adults and (early in the evening) families. Â Love the Fish n Chips and they have a great selection of micro-brews. Â This is definitely the place to stop on Madison street if you're a micro-brew fan. Â Plenty of room to move around you gotta love the big open windows on a sunny day. One of Madison Street's best.
Review Source:Quick take:
We had a large party here recently and they were not very accommodating of our needs. Furthermore, it was not very busy but the service staff would disappear from time to time. Most everyone in the party consented that the food was average at best (limited vegetarian options, but about average for a bar though). Â Shots tasted more watered down than usual. With so many bars on Madison, this place just isn't worth the headache. Definitely pass if you want to have a party here.
I had one of the tastiest seasonal beers ever here, bills brewery pumpkin ale. They have plenty of seating by the windows and I really liked our server, an irish woman who was very personable. Many dishes were had= a special chili dish over noodles, reuben, spicy fries, tuna melt, all really good. I had to bring half of my reuben home for later. Their spicy fries are exceptional, like nothing I have never had before.
The bar is huge with dart boards and a huge variety of beers. I'll definitely be back.
Nice enough to take your mom for dinner, cheap enough to get trashed when she leaves.
The acoustics are absolutely bizarre but the cheese balls are delicious. Staff are hit and miss on attentiveness but are generally friendly and will put up with your friends.
The bar looks inviting but once you sit down you realize how awkward it is to talk to the people around you. Sit at a table for groups of 3 or more; sit by the windows for excellent people watching.
Mostly OK food. Don't order the chicken Caesar wrap if you're a fan of chicken Caesar wraps; you will experience level 2 chicken Caesar letdown.
Since Horan's closed down it's usually easier to park a block or two east of the place.
I dig this place. Â despite other yelpers reviews, the service is always outstanding, many many televisions with about every sporting event possible playing (or will turn on upon request). Â food is great, lots of room, board games, a community library (give take, honor system, vn [very nice]). Â all around, i would say its the most enjoyable bar on madison st.
Review Source:It lost a lot of it's Irish pub look when it moved to the new locale, but don't be fooled, it's still an Irish pub. Â And any place with cider on tap is my friend!
The food is actually really good too. Â I like the soups and Sunday brunch. Â I believe the kitchen closes at 10pm.
It's a large space, so it can get loud. Â There's a stage in front and an occasional live band.
The crowd is super friendly, usually more late 20s-30s age mix, but I think everyone feels welcome here.
If I had to pick one word to describe Healy's, it would be "reliable." Â If you've never visited the bars on Madison St in Forest Park, just know that the atmosphere at most do a complete 180 in the matter of an hour. Â With lots of bars that claim to be Irish (although the only Irish thing I can find about most is the name), you can find yourself in a completely empty dive bar and an hour later it's backed and full of drunk douchy men and whoo girls (thank you himym!) trying to dance and swearing obscenities at each other. Â It's not so much that I think that either extreme is good or bad (okay, i do think the later is bad, but to each his own....), but when I pick a bar to go to, it's partially based on what mood I'm in and if I'm in the mood for a dive bar, I don't want to wade through a frat party. Â I don't blame the bars for this - Madison St just really lends itself to bar hopping.
Not that Healy's doesn't get busy, but somehow it seems to stay consistently in the middle, so the Healy's I walk into during happy hour is the same Healy's that I walk out of at the end of the night. Â Food is above average bar food and they've got a decent beer selection for a sports bar. Â Service can be a bit slow and spotty, but as long as you're not in a hurry, it's not too bad.
Healy's Westside is my favourite place on Madison St. to meet up with friends for a few rounds of cocktails/beers. The location is ideal with plenty of space around for parking, the staff has always been friendly and accommodating when we come for a birthday, and the kitchen is open late enough for those nighttime cravings.
The only reason it's not getting more stars is that the food takes abnormally long from order to receiving it and the bartenders need a brush up on standard/classic cocktails. 45 minutes for Jalapeno Poppers with an additional 30 minutes for a cold Turkey Reuben is unacceptable -- especially when its lunchtime and there are less than 5 customers in the entire place. And not being able to make a Dirty Martini or a Manhattan is absurd... but the Long Islands are the best on the strip.
Healey's is great and not overly-pretensious with a wide-open layout, great for getting together here with a group.
When I went out for my last birthday, I had everyone meet here since the location can't be beat: easy parking, right off 290, and walking distance to the Blue and Green lines.
The staff was great, no problems with the food, and everyone liked Healey's bcause its spacious and dosen't appear to be crammed with people even on a crowded Saturday night.
The bartenders are fast, too, and there's a decent selection of beer on tap.
Been coming to Healy's ever since they were located down just down the block closer to Harlem Ave.
The new place is much more open and airy and very comfortable in the summer especially when all the windows are open. Food is always good, great beer selection and the prices are very reasonable. Great place to just hang out and watch a ballgame with friends.
I think the thing I found most amazing on my recent tour of Madison Street was the size of some of these places. Healy's Westside is one of those places with a center entrance and a giant bar on one side and a seating area on the other. While they call it an "Irish Sports Bar", the Sports bar part comes through stronger than the Irish part.
They have a wide range of beers on tap and they even have Schlitz, a perennial favorite. Their menu looked good with a wide variety of foods from typical bar appetizers to sandwiches, burgers and even Irish entrees like lamb or beef stew or fish and chips. I need to go back and check the food out.
Service was friendly and quick and the beers were properly poured. Â They also have a couple of my favorite bar games like darts (hmm . . .maybe we should have played a few games here before we had a bunch of drinks!) Â And the wrap around windows with its corner location, gave us a lovely vista on a recent snowy night.
Grab a seat at the bar, have a pint or two and put your cares away if only for a few minutes. Then step outside back to the real world and find another bar to check out on this stretch of Madison Street.
I've been to Healy's on weekdays and weekends, as of yet I have never seen this place crowded or filled to a 50 % capacity. Â It's an Irish sports bar (they say) with alot of the sports theme and welcoming "cheers" like atmosphere. Â If they'd crank the volume dial way up and get a dance area going in the front they might attract a bigger crowd. Â When its warmer they open up the front windows and it gives passers-by a vibe of the interior. Â There is a ton of seating, at max capacity I think they could have over 100 people seated. Â They've got a long bar the length of the room which is usually manned by only one bartender. Â So even on a semi-dead Saturday night, (which I've seen a few of) the bartender isn't used to picking up the pace with getting drink orders filled which leaves you waiting a few minutes. Â Healy's also offers dining, electronic darts, a few games like Golden Tee and an Internet jukebox. Â Typically the crowd is White and occasionally I've gotten the "Whoa where did they come from look", usually its friendly though. Â Interesting people watching. Â On weekends you can find an interesting mixture of people, mostly younger. Â Weekdays some cougars and folk in their later 30's +. Â
I like that prices haven't been affected much today versus a year ago. Â Also mixed drinks and shots are affordable, not Chicago downtown pricing. Â i.e. Shot of Tequila Rose $3.50, $4. for a tall Makers and coke. Â Mixed drinks usually have a heavy pour, no matter which bartender it is.
Next door is a Mexican restaurant which both share a main entrance. Â In this bar there are two entry doors which take you between both places, I wonder if you can order off the Mexican menu?
I could hold a grudge against Healey's for being ejected when I was driving on a ticket (they couldn't read the birthdate and despite being about 24, had to kick me out - even though I was only drinking soda as the designated driver!) when they were at their old location, but I can't fault a business for not wanting to take chances!
I like this location much more. Â There is more space and better seating. Â The food is pretty average, but it is the staff and customers who make the place a destination - people are super friendly and you really feel at home. Â I also like that tons of people have parties here, but it doesn't shut the whole place down - you get to feel like you are part of the party while you eat and drink! Â Slainte!
Great place to hang out. Â I go here often with some friends after work. I love how huge the place is. Â There are also families there for dinner early in the evening. The food is actually not bad for bar food! I've only had the appetizers. Chilli cheese fries are great, so is the fried cheese. Yum!
Review Source:I've eaten there and drank there.
Food - gross. Â My grandma, my mom and I were literally 3 of 6 customers one day. Â It took over an hour to get our food. Â And they were grilled cheeses. Â Sick.
And I guess for a Saturday night in Forest Park, it's fine. Â It's cheap! Â Drinks were $4 and shots were $2! Â What?! Â It's really big and they were understaffed so our service was crap. Â But they do have a cheap jukebox full of slutty hits.
Eh.
First of all, the food here is vile. Pure nastiness on a plate. Sweet lord, I don't know whether the old packaged ham with completely tasteless cheese on cheap bread was worse, or maybe the "spicy fries", that were actually their regular fries with a pile of some bottled spice mix dumped on top. Ewwwwwwww.
With that said, it's a typical Forest Park Madison St. bar, with the benefit of more space and nice big windows. It's a nice place for some beer; either an early few or a late few. Just eat before you go.....
Back when they moved the bar from it's location next to the funeral home to a location further West down Madison Street, I thought it would spell the end for this Forest Park favorite. Â However, the owners made all the right moves. Â They improved what needed to be improved, the bar configuration, televisions, bathrooms, etc. Â At the same time, they retained all the good things such as the Irish menu. Â The Healy's relocation was one of the first acts of the overall improvement of Madison Street. Â The Mexican joint next door, who's name escapes me at the moment, is also quite good, or at least it was in 2004, the last time I lived in Forest Park.
Review Source:For Forest Park, Healy's is the best place for a more laid-back evening. It's big & open and brighter than your average bar. It's a great place for the non-smoker or a large crowd, as there is plenty of seating & tables. In the back there are dart boards & your typical video games. A good jukebox! The food is really good, and if nothing else, there's a Jimmy John's connected! It's not a really "happening" place, although it can get crowded at times. Earlier in the evening it's more of a "happy hour" crowd, after 10pm turns more into younger crowd, or empties out.
