Very good. Â The pork belly is recommended, as is their excellent oreccietthe pasta. Â The salads were very good too. Â We had a tuna special that was okay; the relish that accompanied it was better than the tuna.
The bartenders were very serious, in a good way. Â
This is a great place, among the top tier in Richmond.
The food was delicious, but unfortunately the service was lacking. As many other reviewers have said, start with the Pork Belly -- very, very delicious! Dinner was awesome, I had a white fish with black bean/quinoa cakes, cabbage and an avocado sauce, mmm!
Now, the cons about service. We were part of a large group 10-12 people, so perhaps it is better for small groups. At least one appetizer(mine) was forgotten and then an incorrect one brought out -- while it was rectified, Â it did take a little while to get our servers attention both times. My drink was empty a couple of times and I had to ask for a new cocktail. And, the last drink I ordered never arrived.
Sadly, it did not get better. Our server asked if we were ready for the check and I replied that we would like to see dessert menus. While he did bring the menus in a timely manner, he never came to take my order (I was at the table the whole time) then, I looked around, and desserts were arriving. Imagine my surprise when myself and the birthday girl did not have any dessert in front of us and while she said she had ordered hers, I had never been asked(mind you, I requested a menu specifically). I had to find the server to get her order, and at this point I was just over it and didn't get anything for myself. Very disappointing.
Another side note was that I had asked to have the birthday girls dessert on my tab. While I did have it on my tab, I also saw/heard him lean over and tell her the dessert was complimentary as though he had taken care of it... sneaky if you ask me.
On one of my last nights in the great but gritty city of RVA a good friend of mine treated me to dinner at this establishment. I had heard wonderful reviews about Heritage and was excited to try it out.
For some reason I expected it to be like any other new trendy restaurant in the fan (hipster, eclectic, whatever), but upon entering I was surprised to see that the decor was simple, slightly elegant and tasteful.
It was a busy night and there seemed to be no hostess or greeter in sight. In fact it took 20 minutes for us to get a table, and that's only after I reluctantly parked it at the bar and asked the oh so dapper bar lad, "how does a girl get a table in this place?". After pouring me a delectable Suave Tart (?) vodka drink, he said he would take care of us.
Eventually we made it to a table and met our server for the evening, Mary. This girl knew her stuff. She recommended another craft cocktail for me to try, a gin concoction, that was equally delicious as the first. I orded the pork "fries" for a starter and the pork belly for my meal. I like pork. My friend got the arugula salad, river oysters and the pork belly.
Everything was perfection. The pork fries were interesting and a really unique take on barbecue, but the pork belly took the cake. There are no words. You must try it.
This Mary girl was so smooth she talked me into getting dessert, something I rarely do, but my friend was paying and she insisted. I chose the vanilla bean cheesecake. It came out in three little creamy ovals (which I had never seen before with cheesecake), garnished with fresh local strawberries, crumbled pistachios and bits of pound cake. WOW. Fireworks in my mouth.
We ended the night with another winning original cocktail creation not found on the menu and got our drunk, happy asses out of there.
The. Best. Brunch. Ever.
I said it. Â EVER.
So, I have still yet to make an appearance for dinner here but myself, my dining partner in life, and another couple planned on brunch this past Sunday. Â It was 10:30AM and I called to see if I could make a reservation for 11:30, and I was so excited when they said yes and also excited that we didn't have to wait for a table!
Our waiters name was Patrick, and he was awesome. Â I will go back and specifically request his section because he was just my idea of the perfect person to be waited on by. Â Patrick took our drink orders, mimosa, bloody mary, English Breakfast (morning cocktail), and another cocktail, and then our food order. Â The libations all arrived and were delicious. Â
By the time we were about half-way done with our drinks, our food came. Â I ordered the smoked salmon eggs benny which was just amazing. Â I make a mean eggs benedict and confidently believe it's better than most restaurants but Heritage has me beat! Â It came with a side of hash browns which were amazingly delicious and I'm not sure what brand of crack they use to make them so delicious, but I'll continue ordering them. Â My other half ordered the "big mess" which was hash browns, pulled pork, cheddar cheese, Â smoked creme cheese and a few others ingredients i'm sure I'm missing but literally, it was so freaking delicious, that you couldn't put your fork down.
At one point, someone asked me if I was finished and I looked down at my plate and had only eaten half of my meal....I responded instantly, that I knew what his intentions were and I was unwilling to share....and then I caved and shared.
So I can't wait to go back for brunch again and again and am absolutely looking forward to dinner.
Go here, ask to be seated in Patrick's section, order anything, and i'm positive you'll be satisfied.
Take care & savor it up!
When entering a food journey at a new (to me) restaurant, I'm never more excited than to have an experienced server who knows the menu like the back of his hand. Â Our server was exactly this and guided us through an amazing meal shared with another couple. Â Such. A. Good. Meal.
I'll save you a little bit of time...when you arrive order the pork belly. Â Before you order the drinks or before they fill your glass with water...just ask for that. Â
The cocktail list was enticing and the drinks we all ordered were well made, naturally. Â The menu is divided into small, medium and large plates - with a medium being your traditional appetizer size. Â All reasonably priced. Â And the way to go about this is just share with friends. Â It's not all super sharable, but you can make do. Â And it's worth it to experience more of the menu. Â
Aside from the pork belly, the bucatini pasta and meat balls (lamb?) were delicious. Â The risotto with snapper was also excellent. Â We had a few more items but those were the true highlights.
You'll need a reservation at this place. Â It's casual, but you could be dressy and not feel awkward. Â This is the type of place you could go every week and not grow tied of it. Â So glad it's in RVA!
Consistently good. Â Staff is always courteous and super friendly. I have never tried anything here that was not delicious. Â Roasted chicken is a go to dish. Â There is usually something new on the menu to try and the specials never disappoint. Â Wine and beer selection is nice as well and if you ask them to recommend a pairing, it is always perfect.
Review Source:Spectacular meal, from start to finish. Â Solid beer, wine and cocktail list, all at very reasonable prices. Â Plates are either small (half appetizer), medium (appetizer) or large (entree). Â None are above $18, though the quality of the ingredients and preparation warrant more. Â The food ranges from classic Southern to modern American. Â Highlights included the housemade bucatini pasta, spring risotto and red snapper, but I'm sure that another visit will end with a new list of favorites. Â Absolutely make a reservation, especially on a weekend evening.
Review Source:I recently ate here while visiting Richmond with my boyfriend and it was so delicious! For appetizers we ordered the pork belly which I thought was a really good Asian inspired dish. The pork felt like it was melting in your mouth and it was so flavorful for such a small piece of meat. Entree I ordered the hanger steak with the potato puree and I don't even think I can describe how much I enjoyed that dish. I wanted another plate because I could not get enough of it. We also ordered cheesecake for dessert, this is not your atypical cheesecake slice but It was still very tasty. I would definitely come here again, the decor, service, food was amazing!
Review Source:You need a reservation and even then you are going to wait. There is no real "holding pen" when you get there so people end up hanging in the doorway just waiting to be noticed. The place itself is cramped and loud, which I guess is a result of their own popularity.
Food, once it finally arrives, is very good. The shrimp chips are light and airy and the fish dip is a revelation. Skip the cheese plate, it is skimpy and overpriced. The 1/2 a chicken is everything you want, crispy skin, moist bird, and would've earned this place another star if the service had lived up to the food. We ordered two bottles of wine but glasses frequently went empty while our waiter was consumed with other tables or just missing. If you are not going to be around, leave the bottle on the table and we can pour it ourselves.
Maybe in a few months, this will calm down and the experience will match the food, but for now, there are other places I'd go back to first.
I had the best dining experience at Heritage. Richmond dining has turned around in the last year or so with some hipper and more progressive restaurants. I went to Heritage for the first time with my fiance and my parents this past weekend for dinner. We started off with an excellent bottle of french white wine at the bar.
I like how the menu is laid out by Small-Medium-Large portions. We all shared fried oysters, pimento cheese croquettes and soft shell crab. They were all excellent and small enough portions that we could get a taste of each one. We than split the arugula salad which was light and fresh. For a main I had the salmon, which was excellent. Everyone meal was outstanding. As if we didn't get enough food we all split the vanilla bean cheesecake.
Excellent service, food, and ambiance.
Everything was splendid, save possibly the noise level [it was high], even the menu was neatly arranged into size-based sections basically labeled 'a bit nibbly', 'I could eat' and 'I want food'. The waiter was friendly, knowledgeable and highly enthusiastic about the menu options- ultimately we just took his advice and have no regrets on that score. My own dinner- the salmon on 'greenoia' [spinach and quinoia] with a caper/raisin sauce around the edge had a lovely, delicate crust on it from the spices that served to accent the tenderness of the fish. The baked half chicken on cheesy grits was apparently splendid- I got a bite of the grits but the rest got promptly inhaled by my dining partner... which I suppose is only fair since it -was- his dinner and all.
The dessert- we shared the deconstructed cheesecake- was interesting. The dollops of what I can only really call mousse were sprinkled with bits of pistachio and crumbs of 'crust' with the ginger-persimmon sauce whirled around the outside of the plate. Suffice to say that nothing went to waste, though I really wouldn't call the dessert 'cheesecake', but I never quite got into the whole deconstructed thing, which probably means I have no class.
I sort of regret not having a cocktail for dinner, since they looked lovely and review quite well, but I always feel a bit odd drinking when out with people who don't, so sadly, I can't review the cocktail menu- that will just have to wait til the next time I visit... and I shall return!
Heritage, O Heritage... I think I'm in love. Â
Twice now I have been to this jewel of a restaurant, and I'm already planning my next visit. Â And this is in a span of just a few weeks. Â Rarely am I compelled to go to the same restaurant again and again in such a short time. Â Yes, it's that good. Â
Where do I begin... Â The atmosphere is cool, sexy, and intellectual... and no, it's not just because of the books on the walls. Â The bartenders are sharply dressed in vests and dress shirts... A pinch of retro in the look, yet still modern, and o so sophisticated. Â The menu is crafted with artistry. Â The servers are friendly, professional, and extremely knowledgeable. Â I like (Borat voice).
Drinks: Â I've tried two of their signature cocktails so far: the Amigo Amaro and the Gin Wiccan. Â Both exciting, balanced, and worth nursing... Too delicious to guzzle.
Food: Â My oh my, the food. Â Let me start by saying that while everything sounds delicious on the menu, prepare to have your expectations exceeded. Â Know now that my descriptions will not do the dishes justice. Â I've tried quite a few things on the menu, so I'll just go through them one by one. Â If I could I would go on and on and on, so I will try to keep it concise so you can hurry up and book a table. :)
The Shrimp Crackers with Korean BBQ spice are addictive. Â Spicy, super crunch, light as air, a perfect munchie to accompany your cocktail. Â
The Salmon Belly Sashimi was just outstanding. Â The flavor of ginger was delicately powerful without being overwhelming (if that's even possible), and the beer sorbet was an unexpected treat of magnificent proportions... Cooling, exciting, and so special.
The Pea Soup? Â UNBELIEVABLE. Â The flavor of pea was boldly fresh, as if made with peas straight from the garden. Â And the surprise of the crispy ham hock awaiting at the bottom of the bowl was just wonderful. Â So vibrant.
The Warm Spring Asparagus with Poached Organic Egg was light and lovely. Â In eating it, I felt like it was giving me a gentle hug and saying, "Spring is here, aren't you glad?"
The Bourbon Barrel Smoked Pork Belly was just fabulous. Â Smooth flavor with a perfect balance of sweetness, saltiness, and spice... perfectly cooked, gorgeously tender pork belly... divine and thoughtful accompaniments. Â
The Burger was super juicy and comforting (especially with the addition of bacon). Â Perfect portion size.
The Local Mahi was delicate and, again, perfectly cooked. Â A bright and complex dish, with an array of different textures to excite the tastebuds.
Tart, sweet, with a little crunch, the Meyer Lemon Parfait was like the best deconstructed lemon meringue pie you could ever try. Â As I delved deeper into the parfait, I was taken away into pleasureland with each spoonful.
And last but not least, the Vanilla Bean "Cheesecake". Â It is AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING. Â Total mouth orgasm sort of amazing. Â Fight with your boyfriend over the last bite sort of amazing. Â Go to the restaurant just for the cheesecake sort of amazing. Â It's heavenly. Â
I think I have made clear that I love Heritage. ;) Â I love that everything is done with a perfect balance of love, passion, professionalism, and attention to detail. Â I love that many of the ingredients are local and sustainable. Â I love the fact that the menu is extremely reasonable given the quality of food. Â I love that the service is friendly without being too familiar. Â And I love that it's food is so f@#!ing delicious. Â In short, if you haven't been to Heritage yet, go. Â As soon as possible. Â Your culinary adventure awaits!
--Brunch Review--
So I said I'd have to check this place up for brunch and now I have. Definitely a good option to go to if you don't want to deal with the crowds at Millie's, etc.
The Food.
-Chicken & Waffles-
I don't think I have ever tried this before as famous as the combination is. I've got to say, I'm loving it! The chicken is not fried like your expected KFC way. It's lighter which is good since it doesn't make me feel like a fatty, but not as crunchy. I kind of wish it was saltier to get more of the sweet/salty flavor mix, but I know I like things saltier than the norm.
Overall, a lovely place to eat at for brunch without the crazy crowds. Quite relaxing!
I was finally able to try their dinner service with a group of girlfriends!
Their dinner menu consists of small, medium, and large plate categories. Overall, I think this place offers great food at a reasonable price. Aside from the desserts, my group thoroughly enjoyed everything!
--SMALL--
[$4-8]
Some standouts included their chicken liver pate, which was super creamy, and their pulled pork "fries". The pimento  croquettes were decent, but I was yearning for more spiciness. The sashimi was fresh and the plate was beautiful, but the really thin pieces of salmon belly weren't really worth it.

I tried their gnocchi with lamb bacon [which just tastes like regular bacon], fava beans, and pecorino. The plate was pretty small [appetizer size] but the flavors were big and bold. My friends tried the oyster gratin which I thought was alright, but I don't think I would have to eat it again. The pork belly, which everyone raves about, tasted very good but could have been more tender. Their house made charcuterie was really fun to eat.

Their roasted half chicken was cooked perfectly--- surprisingly not many places can cook chicken right so props to the chefs! This was my favorite dish. The steaks and fish here were also cooked well.
--DESSERTS--

Womp. The desserts was where they didn't outshine themselves. My group ordered their deconstructed versions of cheesecake and carrot cake. The "cheesecake" just tasted like dollops of sweetened cream cheese and didn't have the texture of cheesecake and the bits of pistachio couldn't make up for the lack of crust. The bits of carrot cake were a tad dry and had a spongy texture.

--SERVICE--
Our server was fun, attentive, and helpful throughout our meal. The ambiance is great here and you can easily lose track of time. My group was there for over 2 hours and they politely asked us to move.
Food: 4.5
Value: 4
Service: 4.5
Overall: 4
Whoa Side Note: Â This is my first review in over a year (Previous RVA yelper moved to DC area.. and now back to RVA again)! Â I had to make my first review for somewhere good... and I pick... Heritage!
My BF and I walked into Heritage for a Sunday Brunch, about a week or two after they opened. Â As soon as we walked in, I fell in love with the simple, yet contemporary decor! Â Food was great! Â I've always been hesitant to try Chicken & Waffles, but I went for it! Â They are delicious!! Â I can't speak for Chicken & Waffles at all places, but Heritage makes it worth it: using melt in your mouth chicken breast strips and just enough syrup to delight your palate! Â Then some other things you should try at brunch include: their bennies (or eggs benedicts), coffee (from Rostov's across the street), and their mimosas. Â I've tried them all and they make Sunday Brunch a good choice.
I still have yet to come here for dinner & drinks, but all my friends have told me that it's a great spot with that RVA feel. :)
Enjoy!
P.S. The staff is great too! Â Since the first time we went was when they just opened, the waiter took his time to come and talk to us about the restaurant and answer any questions.
My wife and I met some friends at Heritage for brunch on a Sunday. Fortunately, we made reservations because the line extended down the sidewalk when we arrived. We were seated immediately, though the place did seat and serve everyone else pretty quickly.
The brunch menu spans a full page (8.5"x11") and offers modern and foodie twists on old favorites. My wife, for example got a bagel, though one that came loaded with cream cheese, salmon, capers, pickled onions, and arugula.
I ordered stuffed french toast which was filled with a delicious banana and walnut mixture. It was paired with "walnut butter" which was great, but not plentiful enough.
I also had a mimosa, about as traditional a brunch libation as there is. It tasted fine, though I would have preferred a bit more orange juice, or at least a drier champagne. This is a personal preference, so I can't fault the restaurant for it. It's just worth knowing ahead of time if you like your mimosas on the sweet side.
The prices are fairly reasonable for brunch. They're on par with anything you might get at IHOP or somewhere similar, but those place can't match Heritage's quality for the money.
The wait for our food a touch on the long side. Given how busy they were, I can't really complain that much, though. Our meals were freshly prepared, and that obviously takes time to do properly. Given the crowd, the wait wasn't bad at all.
The restaurant has a clean, trendy vibe, but it still feels casual without sacrificing ambiance. It's a little small, though I've eaten in smaller places in Richmond. Space is utilized well. Despite the crowd, we never felt crowded. We were seated by the kitchen door, but there was ample space so that we never felt the rush of waiters coming and going.
We had our three-year old son with us. There wasn't much on the menu for him, but the waiter did a fine job of steering me toward some a la carte pancakes that suited him just fine. Our son is abnormally patient for his age, so the wait didn't make much difference to him. That said, I don't recommend Heritage for young children. A preschooler won't find much to eat or entertain himself with there.
I'd like to try Heritage again for dinner, but I can say with certainty that this is one of Richmond's best brunch spots.
4.5 Stars. I came here for brunch and ordered the chicken and waffles. Let me tell you that this was my second chicken and waffles experience... my first one wasn't so great... because it included a raspberry waffle that was just way too sweet for the flavors of the savory chicken IMO. However the chicken and waffles here are amazing!!! I'm so glad I gave it another go.
The price was pretty moderate at $11, and the food came out in less than 10 minutes. The waffle is listed on their menu as: "crispy strips, cheddar waffle, 'hot' honey, chives" This sounds really strange at first, but it is actually surprisingly good because the cheddar is not overpowering at all.
The chicken was tender with a perfect crunch to it--Not too crunchy to the point where it's a hazard and will cut your mouth, and not too soggy where it just isn't even fried chicken anymore. The cheddar waffle itself was also made well, being lightly toasted on the outside, while soft and fluffy on the inside. The cheddar flavor is noticeable and definitely there, but not overpowering, and does not steal the chicken and waffle show. The flavors melded together so well in your mouth with the sweet hot honey (hot because they make it with a bit of chili oil I noticed, but its very good and actually not spicy at all, just gives it a little kick!) and chives that its almost impossible not to finish your whole meal!
Service was friendly and quick, and we got a table right away, but make sure you come in prior to 11AM before the brunch rush starts on Sundays (they don't take reservations on Sundays)! I also thought it was a cute and modernized atmosphere and I will definitely be returning!
Given the hype, I'd say Heritage was a touch under expectations.
Had a reservation and still had to wait about 10 minutes. Someone else also mentioned it and left us kind of wanting. The place has a cool ambiance and is very happening (i.e busy!). Was fun people watching.
Tried the pork fries which was probably my favorite dish of the night. It is like a shredded bbq that is lightly fried in bread crumbs and has a bbq sauce (which is ok). They kind of looked like french toast strips.
I had the beet salad which was good but I've had better. Also tried the pork belly medium plate which was good. Tender enough but I've had some good pork belly in my day. I did enjoy the sauce. I'm not much of a kimchee/pickled veggie person so I was not into the picked roll it came with. BF's chicken was good and they were ok with substituting the grits.
We tried the vanilla bean cheese cake which was...interesting. They were kind of like morsels and were very soft in texture. I liked the pistachios and the sauce they concocted. It seemed like a dessert that would be on a cooking show. Not everyone's cup of tea.
Would like to try their brunch.
I haven't had this great of a meal in ages! Heritage has got it all... food, service, and ambiance!
Our server, Gabe, did a great job. We had a large party of 7 and although we were late for our reservation and slow at ordering (there were too many delicious-sounding items on the menu!), he was very friendly and patient.
The food is amazing. You can order a variety of small (~less than $10), medium (~$10-15), and large plates ($15-20ish) to try a  little bit of everything Heritage has to offer. Everything we ordered was beyond my expectations and definitely worth the price. The large plates that stood out to me were the ultra-tender Hanger Steak, moist and flavorful Roasted Chicken over grits, and unique curry-flavored Rockfish. My favorite small plate was the liver pate with crostinis (you can ask for extra crostinis because you'll have a lot of pate left over)! One of the most popular dishes is the Pork Belly, which I thought was good, but nothing too special because the pork was a little tough. The only thing I believe Heritage could work on is their desserts. We tried the Carrot Cake and Vanilla Bean Cheesecake, both of which were very small and underwhelming portions.
Heritage is very popular so be sure to make reservations/get there early or you'll be waiting for a while! It is a must-try gem in Richmond!
Awesome local spot! Great bar too!
Make a reservation- we did online and it was simple and our party was sat right away.
Found street parking with ease.
We got some appetizers for the table. Â Pork Belly= melt in your mouth and the pork fries were as unique as they were delicious. Â House made, slow roasted shredded pork, rolled and deep fried. Â It was crunchy on the outside- not greasy at all- and served with bar B Q dipping sauce. I could have had this as a meal it was so good.
I would like to know how someone thinks of rolling and deep frying pork?
I am not one to order Chicken dishes.  At better restaurants, I typically go for red meat or fish.  However, based on our waiter's recommendation I went against my standard and ordered the half chicken.  Great recommendation! It was de-boned and was served over cheese grits and sautéed Brussel sprouts.  Super moist and big portion.
My husband got the Skate- fish. Â It was light, buttery, and also very delicious. Â
Dessert is worth saving room for. Â The homemade candy bar was outstanding. Â It had gooey chocolate on the bottom and lots of crunchy goodness on top! I didnt want to share, but I had to because it was that good. Â Highly recommend. Â
The atmosphere was lively, but not too loud where you can't hear yourself. Â I would suggest this place for a romantic date- great local wines too!- or for visiting friends who you want to take somewhere that is unique to Richmond.
Prices are on appropriate to the menu and ingredients used.
This is one of the places that I will want to try everything on the menu before I can safely say it is my new favorite place. - so far I have not been disappointed in anything ordered.
Edit as of 6/13:
Went back a second time. Â Had the Burger. Â Amazing! The entire meal was, once again, a 5 star. One of my top in Richmond.
A great restaurant needs to have great food, amazing cocktails and superb service. Heritage exceeds in all 3. It might have just popped up only a short time ago, but this Fan spot will be around for a very long time.
BRUNCH:
Chicken & Waffles - who puts cheese in a waffle? The smart, that's who. Seriously, it's not overly cheesy and the chicken is cooked to perfection. I'm an eggs-all-the-time kinda girl and this had me forgetting all about them.
Big Hot Mess: Ok, I couldn't completely forget the eggs. Let's be real. That's why you share your food. Anyway, this is surprisingly sophisticated for something called a "mess." Pulled pork, potatoes, and cream cheese among other ingredients. Everything blended so well together.
DINNER:
Pork Fries: If you're expecting something in a skinny-fry form, think again. They (it's only 2, mind you) are more the shape of mozzarella sticks. And the house bbq sauce - if only I were at my own kitchen table. But manners prevented us from licking the plate.
House Charcuterie: Â excellent. But I've been lucky enough to not have had any bad boards in RVa, so I can't say if it beats out others. But on presentation, it's definitely a contender for the top spot.
Potato Gnocchi: the first time I had it, the flavors were on point, but presentation-wise, everything was one color. Gnocchi, parmesan cheese and the sauce. Â But this last time, they stepped it up big time by adding bacon and green peas. This was gone in meer seconds with our group.
Rappahanock Oyster Gratin: for me this was my least favorite in a Sea of Awesome. But it was still really good. Just to give you perspective though, I'm fairly new to oysters. I'm working on it. A solid 3rd base hit compared to home runs.
Bourbon Barrel Pork Belly: Â my heaven has pork belly in it and this better be the first one in line. It wasn't the largest amount of food, but it packs a serious flavor punch in each bite. My only complaint is that I wish I had ordered more of it. NEVER TAKE IT OFF THE MENU.
DESSERT:
Cheesecake: Listen, if you do nothing else, ORDER THIS. Take your pride out of the equation of ordering cheesecake at a restaurant and get it. Â Every one of their desserts look like it would win a challenge on top chef, but this one takes the cake for me. It comes with a Meyer lemon puree and a berry sauce and my friend and I literally scraped the plate with our spoons. And the cheesecake itself (the real star here), I can't even describe it. We actually sat there speechless for a little bit. Major kudos to whoever put that together.
Lemon Parfait: Layered perfectly and it came with a few shortbread cookies to boot. If you want something light and refreshing, choose this one.
Mattias is a rockstar with the drinks. We couldn't decide - they were out of ginger beer for dark and stormys - Â and Mattias was happy to come to our table and make some suggestions. In the end, he was nicer enough to actually make D&S' , but had to use fresh ginger juice. Still worked with the extra kick.
Service - hell yes. Our waitress and the other servers were amazing. Friendly, honest & knowledgeable about the menu, attentive, but not overbearing. And it's not just one person. I've had 3 different waiters/waitresses and everyone cares the exact same.
Makes Reservations. That's all I have to say.
I've been to Heritage twice now, once for brunch and once for dinner. I was a huge fan of Six Burner, so I couldn't wait to try it out.
I'll start with the brunch first- Service was great, although a little slow (seemed like they were missing a server that morning). I ordered the Big Hot Mess, and it was once of the best brunch items I have ever had ANYWHERE. Its crazy good. Pulled pork, smoked jalapeno cream cheese, potatoes, tomato aioli, all mixed together. I could talk all day about how delicious this mess was. My friends were jealous that they didn't order one too.
I visited Heritage again about a week later for dinner with a large group. Once again, service was great, and our waitress was on the ball when it came to bringing drinks and offering recommendations. We tried a few of the small plates, and the big hit seemed to be the smoked fish dip- great flavor, very hummus-y texture, definitely something I would order again. Per the waitress's advice, I ordered the chicken with cheesy grits and brussel sprouts for my main dish. It was.....just ok. I was really bummed, because I've heard such rave reviews for their dinner menu! Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. The brussel sprouts were great, but everything else was just....nothing special. Their cocktail and dessert menus were really fun, though. I tried a cocktail that combined popcorn rum and Cheerwine, and it was really different! We all tried a few desserts, and I really enjoyed the peanut butter and apple cake.
I highly recommend Heritage for brunch, and I feel like the blah chicken was maybe just a one-off, so I'm dying to try them for dinner again to really see what the fuss is about!
I feel kind of like I am in the Twilight Zone when I read the other reviews for this place but I have been to Heritage twice so I feel like I can review this place with some authority. Â On both of my visits the space was beautiful and a definite improvement over how it looked when Six Burner (which I loved) was in this space. Â
My first visit was for brunch and I arrived with two friends shortly after they opened. Â We were seated right away but for some reason no one came over to get a drink order or anything for over 20 minutes. Â There were only a few other people in the restaurant and I got the impression that all of their servers hadn't shown up yet. Â Oh well, once I got my coffee I was fine. Â I ordered the chicken and waffles and was surprised that they didn't have much flavor. Â I love a sweet salty combo but this dish didn't really have either - the chicken wasn't really seasoned and the honey and waffle weren't really packing much flavor either. Â I was bummed but tried some of my friends "mess" breakfast and it was super flavorful and delicious - which made me sad that I didn't order that!
For dinner a week or so later - our waitress was really nice and knowledgeable about the menu. Â She raved about the chicken on the menu and even said - I don't usually order chicken at restaurants but this is the best chicken I have ever had in my life. Â Well goodNESS I thought I would give it a go. Â It was one of the most disappointing restaurant moments of my life. Â It just tasted like roasted chicken I could have made at home - no seasoning, not particularly juicy. Â Even the cheesy grits weren't great! Â I didn't get it! Â Most everyone else at my table was disappointed in what they had ordered too with the exception of the pork schnitzel which was great. Â
I am having a string of disappointing meals lately and Heritage was almost more than I could take. Â I might give it another try and hopefully I will have an experience like most of the other folks on here!
When the very first impression is bad (rude hostess), it's hard to give a place a good review. Â So I struggle with my star rating.
The bad: Â I didn't have a reservation, and the hostess told me I had to sit at the bar. Â Mind you, there were at least six empty tables. Â Okay, whatever. Â This wouldn't have been so bad except everyone else who came in without a reservation were asked if they wanted to be on a wait list for a table, and at least two of them got tables! Â WTF? Â Why didn't she ask me if I wanted to be on the wait list for a table? Â Also, the martinis are $12. Â That's cool, but when they're $12, they should be filled to the top of the glass. Â They should always be filled to the top of the glass. Â Mine was literally half full (see photo).
The good: Â the food. Â Period. Â It's amazing. Â I got the salmon with quinoa, and it was beautifully presented, and I savored every bite. Â The greedy me would've liked a larger portion, but it was probably what it should've been. Â The martini, though half full, was also good. Â The ambiance is also warm and cozy. Â Good date spot.
In summary, do not go without a reservation. Â Do not expect large portions. Â Do expect good food and a price tag to match.
Went to Heritage last Friday with a large group of 14. Service was on point the entire time especially considering not only our large party but also that the entire place was packed. The menu is fancy and fun. I had the butternut squash soup (rich and creamy) and the pork belly (amazing)! Â The hubs had the pork fries ( so good only wish there was more!) and the schnitzel (yum!). Presentation is lovely! Â Can't wait to go back.
Review Source:Heritage is a newbie to the RVA restaurant scene and has made its mark on a few "best of" lists and rightfully so. Â This Fan eatery serves up polished food by a cordial staff.
The team behind Heritage should not go unmentioned - Chef Joe Sparatta (of Pasture) and wife Emilila have teamed up with Richmond's top mixologist, Mattias Hägglund to form what can only be described as a Fan Restauranteur dream team.
Exposed brick, snugly fit tables, and dark woods are all drenched with distinguished Richmond style.
Mentionable starters are the pimento croquettes ($4) that are warm and light with tangy notes of creamy pimento cheese. Â Got a bar-b-que jones? Â Heritage has got you covered with pork fries ($4) - pulled pork fried up and served with bbq sauce and house pickles. Â My pick? Â A butternut squash soup ($7) with pear and duck confit - the flavors are pleasantly intense and hearty.
All served with impressive presentation, Heritage's entrees taste even better than they look (and they look pretty damn sexy). Â The hanger steak (at $19 is a steal) is cooked to perfection and served with a potato puree so creamy and cheesy that you may attempt to duplicate this at home - don't try...you won't win.
The chicken ($16) is a clear crowd pleaser that's incredibly juicy and served on top of bacon brussel sprouts and cheesy grits.
We visited Heritage with some friends on a recent Friday night. Not surprisingly, this hot new restaurant was pretty busy, with what seemed like a constant wait at the door throughout our dinner. We were seated in the middle of the dining room but in spite of the somewhat cramped, busy space, we didn't have too much trouble carrying on a conversation and enjoying our meal.
Our group of four decided to take the approach of sharing numerous dishes from the menu. It's hard to go wrong with fried cheese and the Pimento Croquettes were no exception. The smoked tomato aioli was a perfect compliment to the sweet and tangy cheese. We couldn't resist trying the Pork Fries which are essentially pulled pork molded into a rectangle and deep fried. Both of these dishes are small plates making them fun little bites to enjoy with a couple of drinks or a predinner bite. For main dishes we shared:
- Beet Salad - Great salad. Loved the horseradish dressing.
- Potato Gnocchi - A pleasant surprise. Much lighter than I was expecting in spite of the crab, ham, and parmesan. There was just the right amount of each ingredient and they were all well incorporated into the dish.
- Bourbon Barrel Smoked Pork Belly - My idea of perfectly cooked pork belly, well seared and melt in your mouth tenderness. Although the bite I had was a little heavily coated in the sweet sauce.
- Vegetable Risotto - A little disappointing. The dish had a great mix of vegetables and flavor but the risotto was heavy, not smooth and creamy.
- Mahi Mahi - Probably my favorite dish. Perfectly cooked fish and I loved the subtle red curry sauce. I do wish the dish had more than a few tempura fried green beans though.
- Pork Steak Schnitzel - Another somewhat unusual treatment of pork. This thick schnitzel-fried pork steak had good flavor but the best part was the German potato salad.
I tried a couple of their specialty cocktails as well and really enjoyed the Old Overholt Last Word - a bourbon cocktail emulating the flavors of mulled wine. Our service was professional and pretty attentive considering how busy the restaurant was. The atmosphere as I mentioned was a little cramped but I liked the dark wood, dim lighting, and buzz in the room. I also love the fact that they are considerate enough to have hung a large curtain between the front door and the dining room, keeping this chilly winter air from rushing in every time someone opens the door.
We had eaten at Six Burner, the restaurant that previously occupied Heritage's space. We didn't have a bad meal there but could never remember what we ate and never returned. It's hard with so many new restaurants opening in Richmond to visit all of them, especially when you have your favorite restaurants that you try to loyally patronize. I don't think this will be a concern with Heritage. Everything on the creative menu was pretty well prepared and memorable so I think they'll definitely succeed where Six Burner unfortunately didn't.
I'm doing business in RVA this year so people have said check out the FAN they have this Restaurant call @HeritageRVA. If you know me I love to eat out only at the best places never need to wait for a table I'm always that return guy so its not a problem. Well lucky me I walk in the place, and its wall to wall with customers five people in front of me, and the hostess comes up all in black not happiest person in the place but she was not that bad "I see you have NO open tables so the bar is it" yes that's it.
Remember I said lucky me I walk towards the back I get the perfect bar table two people ask can I get you a drink, menu now that's service we are starting off right.
The Food was so good, I'm still thinking about it. The Service was outstanding the drinks made the night. Tim was not only working the bar but taking care of people outside the bar. They will see me over, and over to the point they my ask if I eat at home. If you try this amazing place that has a great feel have some relax time don't just walk away upset give them credit its that good. The price was amazing for what you get. In DC or South Beach the check would have been $250.00 + so please don't post anything about $$$ RVA until you travel for good food like this. Great Job @HeritageRVA I'm your customer for life.
I went with a friend for sunday brunch. The atmosphere was nice, very modern with contemporary colors. It was busy but we were seated right away.
I got the Salmon Benny which I thought was okay, not as flavorful as I would like. My friend got the pulled bqq and it was delicious! It was called the "hot big mess", which makes sense because it was a scramble of the pulled bbq pork, cheese, etc.
The price is a little bit more expensive considering you can go to other places around the area for a little cheaper but the portion size definitely makes up for it. They're huge!
Wow - just wow!
You must make a reservation!. Â Getting featured in Richmond magazine and Jamie D's raving review has done well for this small restaurant. Â It gets crowded very, very quickly and once it gets crowded it doesn't die down.
Their menu is broken into three sections: Small - appetizers, Medium - between an appetizer and a small meal & Large - entree. Â
From the small we ordered Smoked Fish Dip. Â This would not be something I would of ordered. Â However, it was the first thing our waiter recommended so I typically will go with a recommendation when trying a new place. Â This dish was simple and amazing. Â The smoked fish dip had a very powerful smoke flavor, the dip was smooth in consistency and salty. Â The accompany pita bread triangles were thicker than typical pita bread and toasted to perfection. Â The last piece to the appetizer was the house pickled vegetables. Â Add all three it was an amazing appetizer that I will come back for.
From the Medium dish we ordered the House Made Charcuterie (featured in Richmond magazine). Â This is served on a cool looking stone plate that has tasso ham, lomo, house made beef sausage, pimento cheese, lardo (pork belly) and duck ham. Â This also comes with toasted pieces of baguette there were thinly sliced. Â The duck ham was so good! I will order this dish again just for that - I am also secretly hoping at some point this is its own small plate!. Â This is not your normal charcuterie plate and I really appreciated the different types of meat, the pairing they presented and the overall presentation.
From the Large dish section I ordered the Mahi Mahi. Â This came out on a bed of bok choy, carrots and bean sprouts that were topped with peanuts and flavored in a red curry fish sauce (subtle the flavor was great). Â On top of the fish were 4-5 pieces of tempura green beans - so wish there were more! Â There was also foam all around the plate (visually loved it) - I believe it was a peanut foam. Â The fish was amazing and its pairing with the vegetables was perfect. Â Great dish!
Overall this was one of the top meals I have had in Richmond. Â It was a perfect date night spot. Â I will definitely look to come back soon (and often).
Hot Damn!
I went into Heritage with no expectations. I had only heard of the restaurant because a friend of a friend is in the restaurant buisness. But forreal forreal, this place is now my favorite RVa spot.
The menu features your typical RVa style ingredients(seasonal/local) with a bit of fusion. The main ingredients(for me its the protein) really sing in all the dishes and all the other ingredients help highlight it. Â The flavors in all the dishes I tried are pretty robust, and may be overpowering to some but I felt it worked well. Â One thing that really stood out to me was how moist the chicken was. Â I've never had chicken this well prepared at a restaurant in Richmond. One thing though, the portions are hit or miss, but I think the wait staff steers you in the right direction when you're specifically looking for portion size.
Decor, seemed kinda nice. But then again I wasn't really paying attention to it and didnt really notice. They did have a long bar though, and had one of my favorite craft beers, Founder's breakfast stout, on tap which was delightful.
Date of followup: 12/23
Sooo, I REALLY REALLY wanted to go back to Heritage to try some of their delicious food again!! Â So when one of my friends visiting from BOSTONNNNN, who is a serious foodie, asked if we could eat lunch at Galaxy Diner, I literally looked at her and said "No thanks, we are going to Heritage." Â I just couldn't let her eat very very okay diner food. Â
Another one of our friends accompanied upon this food adventure and it was quite exciting because Heritage only does brunch on Sundays. Â
Since this is a follow-up review, I"ll make it short and simple. Â My friend the foodie from Boston was mind-bottled. Â She was super impressed with the food. Â Mind you, this is the same girl who has eaten at three of Barbara Lynch's restaurants in Boston. Â My other friend also loved this place and he told me if I have any more restaurant suggestions, then he would trust my judgment.
Quick synopsis:
Ambiance/Service: Â Surprisingly there was no wait, but the restaurant was still full. Â Service was good, but this is the one reason for why I just cannot give Heritage 5 stars. Â The wait time to order, get drinks, get food, etc. is just a little below the standard that I expect. Â If I were basing the rating off of food alone, Heritage would be 5 stars. Â I REALLY REALLY want to give this place 5 stars, but until they hire more servers and provide a higher level service, I don't think I will be changing this rating.
Food/Drinks: Â My friend loved her Mimosa and was surprised to taste the fresh-squeezed orange juice (none of that concentrate BS). Â For you beer lovers, try the Founders Breakfast Morning Stout, it is absolutely freakin delicious.
My male friend order the Chicken Fried Steak and absolutely devoured that. Â My friend from Boston ordered the Salmon Eggs Benny and was more than pleased. Â I think what surprised me the most was the portions for brunch here at Heritage are much larger than there dinner portions. Â You will definitely be satisfied after eating brunch here.
Richmond keep this place in business, it's that good. Â Just don't hype it up too much because I really enjoy being able to walk on in and get a table ;)
While we haven't stopped in for dinner, we made our way in for Sunday brunch and what a treat. Â
I had the burger with bacon. Â The toasted brioche added a nice buttery touch to the sandwich. The burger was and cooked to order. Â The fresh cut fries were standout as was the housemade smoked tomato aioli.
My boyfriend ordered the the French Toast. Â A slight mix-up had a wrong entree brought out, so he ended up with eggs benedict. Â The server handled it like a pro offering to let him keep it while the kitchen corrected the order -- which meant more food to sample! Â And wow - that benny was tasty!
The sausage and hashbrowns were also steller... Â when the French Toast arrived, it was like dessert -- moist, sweet, and delicious.
We look forward to returning for dinner soon.
Went here with my wife for date night on a Friday evening. Â The place was packed but not rowdy at 8PM and started to clear up a bit by the time we took off, around 1030PM.
Every bite of food was phenomenal, and that's saying a lot, since we ended up ordering 9 dishes. Â Highlights included the cheese and charcuterie plates and the duck pate. Â The duck pate was just... phenomenal.
Drinks are also a highlight. Â Craft cocktail lovers will find a carefully curated cocktail menu with at least two drinks for every palette. Â I don't go for wine or beer when good mixed drinks are around, so I can't comment on that part of the beverage program.
But the best part? Â The service. Â Even when the place was crowded, our server paid attention to our every gesture as if we were eating at a michelin-starred place. Â Chef Joe dropped by twice to check on us and head bartender Mattias presented each drink to make sure it was to our liking. Â And all of that attention didn't feel obnoxious or overbearing in the least. Â It was like we were having dinner at an old friend's house and they were just being good hosts.
I know I'll be heading back here if I'm even close to Richmond in the future. Â Grab seats now, before the word gets out and reservations get scarce!
This is a cute little neighborhood restaurant that serves locally grown and sustainable food. Â They offer small, medium and large portions which gives you the option to try various small dishes or not....if you're not the sharing type. Â The food was flavorful, the staff was friendly and the chef is talented. Â
We started off with pork "fries" and pimento croquettes. Â The pork "fries" aren't your typical fries but their take on it was definitely unique. Â The pimento croquettes were seasoned perfectly. Â Then we had the Bourbon barrel smoked pork belly. Â This was to die for! Â The meat was so tender and the fat just melted off. Â Delicious! Â Our last dish was the fall veg risotto which was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Â It had a nice earthy taste that left me wanting more.
My husband is a cheapskate and never likes to go out to eat but even he said he'd be back for more! Â Enough said. Â This place will be around for a while.
