On my trip to Oahu I decided to take a drive to North Shore with my son. Â Last time out here I passed on the shrimp trucks and regretted it. Â This time even though I was sick as a dog, battling the flu or something I was determined to stop and eat at one. Â We saw an area that had a few trucks and decided on Honos. Â There were so many to choose from I couldn't decide so we got the BBQ Shrimp. Â As others have said it came with 10 HUGE shrimp, two scoops of rice and a coleslaw.
It took a while for us to get our food but once it arrived we were in heaven. Â My son and I shared one plate and it was filling (probably because I was sick). Â One per person would definitely make a nice meal. Â The shrimp were cooked well and well rice is rice. Â I wasn't a big fan of the cole slaw. Â Not because it was vinegar based, I have had some nice ones, but it lacked any flavor.
The only issue that I had other then the wait was they give you one napkin and these were some messy shrimps! Â They did let us use the sink behind the truck to wash our hands ( had to fend off a rooster).
One of the cool things about this truck is that they have sharpies and you can write on the truck. Â I wrote Dough #54 for my ball player at home.
Even though the food was excellent the issue with returning is that there are so many other shrimp trucks that I would like to give a try next time I am out. Â I guess if I was a local I would go a few more times.
Shrimp was AWESOME!
Went to Haleiwa specifcally for shrimp! Â
I have already rated Giovanni's so this one is for Honos. Â Giovannis is ALWAYS busy and if youre not first in line, then youre definately going to wait for your food. Â Ive gone many times before so I decided to try out the other ones this time. Â
Most shirmp trucks have the basic styles: Scampi, Lemon Butter, and a Spicy sauce. Â Honos has this AND MORE! Â They have a larger selection of food and shrimp styles!
There was no line, so I ordered my food right away. Â I waited about 5 minutes and when I went back to my wife who ordered before me at Giovanni's, she was STILL WAITING. Â She must have waited at least 20 minutes! Â
I opened up my box (cause I ordered it to go) and the smell was awesome. Â It looked real saucy and the shrimp was noticeably bigger than the ones Giovanni's have. Â
It came with 2 scoops of rice and a small slaw salad with a Vinagrette type of dressing. Â Devoured the whole plate with no problem! Â The plate was $12 for 12 shrimp, 2 scoops of rice, and the salad.
On my next trip back out to the shrimp trucks, I think im gonna go right pass Giovanni's and back to Hono's! Â
Thank you nice Korean ladies for opening up my taste buds!

Love it. Â I have eaten, reluctantly, at many of the lunch trucks around Hawaii. Â I have been to Giovannis, Macky's, and Kahuku's trucks. Â The menu at the shrimp trucks are fairly standard, garlic, butter, spicy, and so on. Â There are other options for either surf or turf at Honos which you probably won't find in other trucks. Â The staff is very friendly and customer service oriented. Â The shrimp and ribs are made to order so it may take some time for your order to come up, but the food is fresh. Â The plates are set at $12 with is pretty average. Â They are also military friendly, giving discounts for military personnel and family members. Â If you want to enjoy great shrimp, I recommend the spicy or pineapple, and kalbi then this is a must do if you are near Haleiwa on the North Shore of Oahu.
Review Source:the phenomenon of a shrimp truck is genius. we got a kick out of seeing these three trucks parked off the road in a cute little picnic area. at the time, one was closed and we arbitrarily chose honos over the other, which apparently was giovannis. i'm glad we did, because the garlic shrimp was delicious!!! it's in the shell still, so some of the chunky garlic sauce gets lost in the refuse, but just mush some of the rice into it. i was so satisfied and i want more!!!
Review Source:Was looking for the Giovannis Truck and saw Honos. Â My friend got the shrimp scampi plate from Giovannis and I decided to get the garlic shrimp plate from Honos.
Honos is run by some really friend ladies. Â The shrimp is bigger here and its topped with a lot of garlic. Â For 12$, you get shrimp + 2 scoops of rice + coleslaw. Â The garlic is different from Giovannis because it's not crispy, but plain. Â There are other shrimp plates and they also have a kalbi plate. Â I was really tempted to eat that since I prefer meat over shrimp, but since it was a shrimp truck I felt obligated to get shrimp. Â
They take off 2$ if you have a military ID. Â Definite plus! :]
Been here close to a dozen times and this time we had the Spicy garlic, butter spicy, and the 'plain' garlic. Â And like the previous other 11 times everybody was happy and all of it was delicious. Â I probably should branch out next time and try something new like the pineapple shrimp.
Review Source:As my husband and I arrived at the lot of shrimp trucks, we were confused as which to try. Â There was a super long line at Giovanni's so we decided to go with Hono's instead, which I'm glad we did. Â Just as the previous reviews stated, huge shrimp, uber friendly family, and very tasty food. Â The cost is $12/plate ($1 less than Giovanni's) and they have Kalbi as well. Â The thing to try is their garlic shrimp...sooo yummy. Â If you like spice, they have a spicy garlic shrimp as well.
Check out my pics.

Eating shrimps out of a truck on the roadside, humm, this was not really a natural thing for me, but we had tried Shark Cove truck and loved it so we gave it a try.
We selected this one as the other trucks served either fish&chips or thai food, or looked like tourist traps.
This truck is operated by Korean folks, they are super clean, super efficient, very polite, service oriented and.....the food is sooo delicious.
I recommend the garlic shrimps or the spicy garlic shrimps. The ribs are good but not as exceptional as the shrimps.
They do a fantastic job, it is fresh and easy to digest :)
Honos Shrimp Truck is much better than Giovanni's. Â We compared shrimps from both trucks, and found Honos' shrimps are bigger and $1 cheaper. Â Giovanni's is more crowded because they were there first. Â But I prefer Honos. Â My favorite dish here is the spicy garlic shrimp. Â
Can't wait until I get back to Honolulu.
I think that this was definitely a tasty joint and when a shrimp truck offers a sweet and sour pineapple sauce and drenches it all over the plate, that's all I need to know to get in line for their shrimp. I don't think the shrimp were that plump (compared to Macky's which is my staple comparison) but I think they give you a good amount along with two scoops of rice and some coleslaw. Good location and a really nice lady serving up the shrimp and taking orders, so I would recommend Honos, especially if those other trucks are packed with folks getting their fix.
Review Source:This truck is located right next to the famous Giovanni's shrimp truck. As we were right next to both of them we decided to get a plate of each and compare. There was of course a longer wait time for the Giovanni's order as opposed to Hono's because there were not as many people at Hono's. So we go the Hono's plate first and the shrimp were huge! They were more like prawns if you ask me. There was tons of garlic on top of the rice and all over the shrimp which was fantastic, but what I didn't like about this was the pasty texture of the dish... it was either the shrimp that had a slight pasty texture to it or it was the garlic mixture that made it that way.
The flavor was good, but I really didn't like the texture.
This truck gets so little love ... I decided I'd lavish a little more on them! Sure, they don't have the rep of Giovanni's but their garlic shrimp are better than Gio's.
We compared three trucks -- Gio's, Macky's and Hono's. And although Macky's won hands down, Hono's is a good second choice. I was disappointed that the shrimp had a pasty flavor right at the end, but I liked that the garlic was piled on and scooped out over the rice too.I really like their garlic mix, and do appreciate the kind smiles and quick service. The shrimp are bigger than Gio's, but not bigger than Macky's.
Hono's also gets an extra star for being open later than Giovanni's truck.
Thank you Hono's!
So when I first ventured into Haleiwa, everyone kept telling me to hit up Giovanni's for their garlic shrimp plate. Â So we pulled into "Food Truck Lane" and saw three trucks. Â There was a Thai food truck, Giovanni's (which was packed of people in front of their tables) and a little lonely truck called "Hono's." Â
I was wondering why and how there were so many peeps at Giovanni's and none at Hono's. Â To be completely honest, I wanted to see what all the hype was about so I chose to dine at Giovanni's. Â It was good!! Â Shrimp was delicious!
***Fast forward a couple weeks***
Hit up Waimea Bay up in the North Shore again, got the munchies so we went back to "Food Truck Lane." Â This time, Giovanni's was closed and I was greatly upset because I wanted those tasty little scrimps. Â With little hesitation, I went next door (truck) to Hono's. Â The owner and her daughter were really friendly. Â Talked to them for a little bit, dropped a little Korean on them and then....boom!! Â they hook me up with extra scrimps!! Â The shrimp tasted pretty similar to Giovanni's but the size of the shrimp were bigger + they hooked up. Â Overall, the shrimp was basically the same as Giovanni's, but upgraded on roids.
The next time I went back, the lady recognized me, appreciated that i brought more people to her truck and she hooked a brotha up with some kalbi!! Â
Shrimp is very, very good and the ladies of Hono's are really nice. Â Hit them up next time you're in "Food Truck Lane."
I stood here in front of this shrimp truck for a while without these workers even looking at me. No acknowledgement at all! They could have at least said that they would be right with me or something. But they didn't even look at me. I felt invisible. Â I was standing with my money in my hand and thought, I guess you don't want my money. So I went to Giovanni's. The lady their, ironically, says to me, I see you have money in your hand. I'll take it. lol Too bad. I wanted to try their shrimp.
Review Source:So I drove around looking for a quick bite while at Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and I was on my way to another shimp truck. when I saw Honos I thought this was it. Small mistake but I don't regret it. I had the Butter Shrimp plate which came with coleslaw (really just shredded lettuce with a little dressing). Looking at the menu they also had Garlic Shrimp, Spicy Garlic Shrimp and Kalbi as well. I asked what was good and the cute girl said the Butter Shrimp was the most popular. Short and sweet, it was delicious. $12 for the plate.
Come another pair of people and she tells them the Spicy Shrimp is the most popular. Bah. I felt had, but it was good regardless.
Just a warning though, you will leave still hungry. That is if you have a big appetite.
Worth coming again? Maybe. Gotta try out the other shrimp trucks before I can really answer that. Oh as with any truck based food dives there is no bathroom but there is a locked (ask for a key) portapotty and an outside sink for you to wash up with.
So this was my first time visiting a shrimp truck and I have to say it was deffinatly the best meal I had on my vacation to Hawaii.
I ordered the garlic spicy shrimp and spare ribs. Both were Sooooo Good. Shrimp was very spicy and noticable garlic taste. Spare ribs were super tender and juicy. The meal was serverd with rice and coleslaw. The meal was $12 plus $1.00 if you want a canned/bottled beverage. Honos also offers a military discount so if you have anybody in service your meal is $10.
Yummy!!!
OMG... So on my 2nd trip to the North Shore during my week long vacation in Oahu... It was a must to stop by a shrimp truck... Although I had read the reviews on Macky's and Giovanni's... I stumbled upon HONOS... Seriously bomb a** shrimp plate- I love my food spicy- and that's exactly what I got- I did attempt to see the menu choices from Giovanni's which happens to be to the left of HONOS but they said SORRY... we're closed... WTF?!? Its barely 5 o'clock... Oh well, their loss not mine... I was very excited to try out my shrimp plate- I ordered the Spicy Garlic... even at a steep price of $12.00 the H20 was only a $1.00. It was absolutley PHENOMENNAL.... I'll have to post pics soon- I cannot believe HONOS wasn't on YELP before... but they are now. I don't care what anyone says- It may not be WORLD famous but hey Giovanni's seems to be a big hype just like Matsumotos shaved ice... For the REAL locals- this is hawaiian food at its best.... I LOVE THE NORTH SHORE- If you make it that far from Waikiki beach you'll be in for a sweet treat! The town of Haleiwa is super chill and cool to walk around ;)
