    Cheap American Chinese.

My folks were in town and they are nuts for good Chinese. Living on the East coast, they are used to fabulous Chinese, as am I. But I have yet to find a terrific Chinese restaurant up here. So we decided to take a chance and order take-out from House of Peking.

First the interior. Simple is the best way I can describe it. House of Peking is located in a strip mall and they ambience matches. I don't think they actually expect people to dine there. Maybe for lunch? So don't expect to go there to sit down. This is a take-away restaurant only, people! You have been warned!

Now the food. It was your typical American Chinese. My husband and father order the Kung Pao Chicken and asked for spice. It was rather bland and had absolutely no kick to it. Same with the Mu Shu Chicken. Extremely bland and tasteless. The Egg Foo Young was swimming in sauce. The decent dishes were the Chicken with Broccoli (it's really hard to mess up this one!) and the Combination Fried Rice.

From other people's reviews, I can see that the concept of American Chinese lives on. Just not in my household! The search continues.

Very tasty Chinese!  I got the Kung pao chicken and I didn't want to stop eating it! They have 3 spicy levels: mild, medium, and spicy... I would get the highest one if you like it spicy.  The woman behind the counter was also very polite.  You can tell that the food is fresh.

This restaurant is located at the end of a strip mall south of the McDonalds on Sheridan Rd. It has shared parking with other stores in the mall.

I drove by this place all the time and decided to give it a try.  When I go to a new Chinese restaurant I always benchmarking them by ordering the same thing, egg roll and  Kung Pao Chicken. Simple dishes but you can tell a lot about their cooking from what they do to these dishes.

The egg roll is relatively small and bland. Kung Pao Chicken is made to order and the vegetables are fresh, it doesn't taste bad but nothing special; highly Americanized Chinese Food. Most of us can whip this up at home. The price is in-line for the area but not really a bargain. If you look around you can find a better place in this area.

Excellent food at reasonable prices!  They even have brown rice available on request, which is unusual for the Midwest.

The food is fresh and not greasy.  It is made to order and to your requested level of spice.  They do not use MSG, which is a HUGE plus.

They also have take-out available, and is a great place to get a lot of good quality, fresh food for parties or events with your friends.

Quite good for Americanized Chinese food.  We ordered crab rangoon, which actually had discernible crab (or more likely crab-flavored whitefish) in addition to cream cheese.  We will definitely order take-out in the future, dining in is a little dreary.  Food is fairly priced.

5 stars because this is my fiance's favorite Chinese place. During college he would hang out and study here, so he has a soft spot for House of Peking. We stopped in here for a quick dinner while in the 'hood.  House of Peking is really small and simple, but the food is hot and tasty.  The egg rolls were really good as was the moo shu and orange chicken.  Prices are great for the amount and quality of food.  Super friendly staff.  It's in a strip mall, so keep your eyes peeled or you might miss it.

They have the best chicken fried rice of anywhere I've ever been. There must be crack in it. So incredible for something so simple.

Ok, so I really HATE fake Chinese food. However, this place makes it really good and with high-qaulity ingredients. Prices are in line with portions....And their light sauce is to die for! MMMMM.....So, if you find yourself in the restaurant Mecca of the Northshore, stop by the little strip mall on Sheridan here and you won't be disappointed if you like "Chinese" food. Added bonus- they have some killer curries too!
