This rating is for donuts alone. Call me stupid but i never knew they made donuts here (usually stumbled in here in the early morning hrs after a long nite of drinking, looking for a quik meal) until I smelled em from across the street last week after dinner @ El Veneno. Seemed like a "calling" while trying 2 fig out whats 4 dessert. So me & the gf decided 2 explore the aroma that captivated our sense of smell & boy were we in 4 a surprise! Not only do they make donuts here but theyre HUGE, even monstrous u cud say. We settled for 2 "Texas" donuts which r the size of a human head for abt $2/ea, one choco & one reg glazed. They also hav GIANT "Alaskan" donuts which r the size of bicycle tires 4 abt $6/ea. I was tempted but not 2nite, 2 much yummy in my tummy already. Overrall, really gud fresh donuts & will definitely b back. Chicago, I think I found the DONUT KING!
Review Source:A few years ago I used to come to Huck Finn after a night of partying. One Saturday night the bf and I were hungry and this was the only place opened. We we're seated and my drunken self accidently knocked over my water. The waitress saw what happened and quickly moved us to a new table.
I'm a sucker for anything chorizo so I went with the chorizo skillet with chocolate chip pancakes. The bf had a skillet too I just don't remember which one. My skillet was good and I had plenty left over for breakfast the next day.
While we were leaving I saw all the yummy donuts. We decided to get a few for breakfast the next day. The donuts weren't anything special except for the double chocolate. It was so good.
I'd rather come here for some late night food rather than a chain restaurant.
24/7 and ok service.
Huge place perfectly located on the corner of Pulaski and Marquette. They are open 24/7 (if I'm not mistaken) and the service is nice. I'm sorry but that's all the good things I can say about this place because when it comes to food. (And I have been here many times)
I honestly have not had anything that I thought it was really good. Everything is just ok, edible and nothing to brag about.
Good for what it is. It is open late, they have coffee and tea (the tea is not really good)
They are there, they are open, don't expect much about the food.
I really like this place...wait no I guess I love this place especially when I go there 6 in the morning after a night of clubbing (food tastes amazing when you're drunk). Sober or not...the food tastes good and I don't have any complaints. My favorite orders are the Potato Pancakes, Grecian Pork Tenderloin, and Fried Mushrooms. All are yum yum. And OMG I love their clam soup and cream of broccoli soup. Definitely Gorden Ramsey would say that those soups are far from the real thing but I don't care...they're Pringles my mouth.
The atmosphere is decent and the waitdresses are always friendly. It's not your typical trendy Wicker Park restaurant but a good local business that's gonna stick around for a long time.
For many years I have passed this place and  never went in. I finally  went here for  breakfast  Friday and it was pretty good. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by the mesmerizing aroma of freshly baked pastries. The only thing that kept me away was the whipped cream cake I had waiting on me at home!  The menu is pretty expansive and it looks like they may get quite the share of business(could it be those big a@# donuts?)  I settled on the  sizzlin vegetarian skillet which was a bunch veggies cooked up with scrambled eggs, monterey jack, and hash browns with a side of bacon and pancakes. I enjoyed my meal. The waitress Sue was very nice and attentive so she deserves a special mention! Friday was my birthday and she seemed genuinely more excited than I was aboutt it! I got a free sundae which I smashed!!!!!!!!!!!
I plan to return. The prices were reasonable, you get good portions and I think you definitely get your money's worth. The service was good  too.
One caveat: the coffee left much to be desired. it wasn't spit- out- upon -tasting bad but it wasn't sit- down- and-have- several- cups good either.
I have been coming here for years and seem to always come back. Â I don't think i've had anyhthing that I don't like from this place. Â My favorite still has to the be the chicken parmigian. Â I keep coming for more and more. Â The service is not bad and I agree with Dave, it can be a little cleaner.
Review Source:Do you know what I like most about this place? I have been coming here now for 20+ years, and nothing (besides the prices, which are still very reasonable,) has changed. Even the sign out front of the place is the same from when I was a kid.
I love their breakfasts, especially the minced ham and eggs served with an English muffin. I love their sandwiches, especially the chili Huckburger with cheese (excellent chili) and the Farmer's Steak Sandwich. I have to admit, that every time I'm here, I also have to have a sprinkled donut. They make them on site, so they are usually pretty fresh at all times.
Service has always been prompt and very friendly, the coffee endless and always good. The place is always busy, and is open 24 hours. The bathrooms though, could use a bit of sprucing up.
It's late you're hungry and you're on the south side. You also have your mother-in-law with you so one of the stand up grab a taco joints won't do.
So we spotted the Huck Finn, guess this will stop the hunger. The place was decently clean, and the people were pretty friendly. I know some reviews said the wait staff wasn't up to par. We found this to be quite the opposite.
We ordered burgers and one BLT, the burgers were overcooked and pretty dry, I ordered the BLT which was just fine. We asked for the fries crispy and they were delivered to us just that way, we also order a couple of iced teas and they kept up on the refills without us having to flag them down. So the service was very attentive. We even had a server change, and the one that ended his shift didn't come up to us and ask us to settle up because he was leaving.
This is a diner, the food is going to be what you expect at a diner. I always have my standby meals, I've found that it's hard to mess up a BLT, grilled cheese, or some type off omelet. If you go to a diner and order a steak or another type of entree you're rolling the dice.
As I said, if it's late you're hungry and on the south side, this will take care of your immediate problem. Will it be a culinary experience of a life time, no. But really now, you know better.
It's really not that bad as people say. Put your self in their shoes they have to deal with DRUNK idiots. This Huck's is actually a little decent compare to the one on Archer and Damen; you have the waiter who is serving your food and accidently spit talks into your plate but your soo drunk you don't even realize! Or the waiter who cough on your platter. I have witness this on a SOBER late craving night.
I love me some IHOP breakfast tho sorry Huck!
This is the spot to be if your partying on the southside and it's 3 a.m. and you realize you are famished! Â Its not the greatest, but honestly 3 a.m. diner food? what do you expect? The food is pretty darn delish after about 5 modelos and a few shots of patron. Burger & fries is usually what I get and once in a great while an omelet.
And if you have a sweet tooth, they make sundaes!
Ok so this place is big, But the food & service is Terrible.
First they dont have anything for kids menu. HELLOOO!!
People have kids!!!........ then there service is so terrible.
Our waiter was ignorant. He never came back to check on us. then when he did offer to refill my coffee i had already ate my funky looking eggs.... and was ready to leave. I sent my son to give him at least 2 dollars of tip he then took it from my son and then didnt even smile & say thank you, just took it without a simple smile nor thanks... this place is terrible, food was worse... never visiting again..... Yuck!
People on here seem to have rated it at least 2-3 stars, but I am giving it two because as several people have said the food isnt anything to write home about. This seems to be more of a place for the clubgoers to get a meal after their night of partying and drinking since they back this place up like a constipated old fart. Plus the restaurant looks like it could undergo some serious remodeling because it looks out of date and could use a makeover from the late 1960s-1980s.
The service is ok, but it's nothing to rave about since it's a place where most people hit up after a night of partying and clubbing when everything else closed for the night. I do give them props for the pancakes they're really good, but other than that it's only good for their bottomless coffee cup which is what my friend loves to get.
I go to Huck Fin during the day. I have noticed that this place has a higher rating than it deserves. Most of the good reviews come from drunk reviewer so that explains it.
like I said I eat here when I am lazy and don't wanna think of what to eat for lunch. Its your average dinner food. nothing to write home about other than every time I take a sip out of my coffee the host comes and fills it up again. its nice but the coffee is horrible and I really don't want it refilled. my point is service is good here.
I tried most of their sandwiches on the menu. the quality is terrible but again its a dinner and they don't charge a a lot so i guess its ok.
had better had worse. avoid the fries
My friend and I came to Huck Finn for a "nightcap" after dinner. I suppose you can get food here too as it looks like a big diner, but the specialties here are donuts and ice cream (imagine one of those unwieldy Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robbins combo stores with food too, and hopefully food unlike those dainty flatbread half-sandwiches parading as an actual whole sandwich). They even have a special with a scoop of ice cream plopped upon a donut, which made me chuckle for some reason. I was told the sundaes were enormous, so I settled for a scoop each of chocolate and vanilla ice cream, topped by a big blob of whipped cream. The dessert hit the spot, though the ice cream was not particularly memorable. I've never heard of Huck Finn before, but there appears to be a few others in South Chicagoland like this West Lawn location.
Review Source:Good 'ole 24 hour Huck Finn is many things but most notably its the 3 AM hangout of many southsiders. I've had more Becky Thatchers than I can remember and have seen every kind of male and female gangbanger and douchebag while eating those Becky Thatchers. I haven't been there in a few years but the air is probably much cleaner now without smoking. Their pancakes are always good and consistent and I recommend you pretty much stick to the pancakes or their club sandwiches. The ice cream and donuts are pretty good too
Review Source:Your typical Chicago diner food. Â Other reviewers have compared it to Denny's, though I'd say they're at least one step above that. Â Service isn't bad but nothing really to write home about. Â I typically get breakfast food when I go though I did try my friend's monte cristo and it was pretty decent.
Review Source:Err...meh?
I've been to both Huck Finn's. What this place lacks compared to the one on Archer is pervy old Asian men. Other than that, they are pretty much the same.
I had their cackling good eggs and a crispy chicken sandwich. The chicken sandwich was a disaster - the breading was kinda yucky and the chicken hardly had any flavor to it. The cream of mushroom soup was pretty good, however.
The cackling good eggs came with sausage, scrambled eggs, toast, and hash browns. It was pretty good.
My friend had the meatloaf sandwich, which he thought was good, but looked like crap to me.
The food is average, but we had an awesome waitress that was extremely friendly and cool. She deserves kudos.
This place is a good spot for some hangover food or some people watching, since it is open 24 hours. Prices are reasonable. I would say that this Huck's has better service, and the slightly cleaner bathroom
No matter how bad this place is, there will always be room in my heart for their bad coffee and scowling waitresses. Â Although I don't visit nearly as often as I did in high school, the menu is exactly the same-- the "Becky Thatcher" breakfast, with sausage, eggs, hash browns, and pancakes, the "specials", which I don't think have actually ever changed (beef pot roast or chicken with rice pilaf, anyone?), and of course, the donuts and ice cream, which have never impressed me, but most others seem to appreciate. Â However, being able to breathe in there was a bit of an awful shock.. Â I'm kind of surprised that they went along with the smoking ban. Â It just wasn't the same without the smoke screen to mask the flavor of the coffee.
Review Source:I've been going to Huck Finn's since high school. Â I've had good times there and bad. Â Like Dave S. said this is your 24hr diner! Although sometimes it gets a bit busy there and the server might forget about that coke I asked 15min ago. Â I still go there. Â
The breakfast selection is good and tasty. Â My favorite is the french toeast with stawberries. Â It's always yummy all the time. Â My second favorite there is the BLT platter! I think the only reason why I like the BLT platter is because you get a cup of yummy soup and a bread basket. Â But one thing that never let's me down is their coffee. Â It's alwasy fresh and delicious!
Huck Finn will always have a warm spot in my heart!
It has been at least 3 years since I have been here to eat.  This is your average 24 hour diner.  They make a really good omelet full of stuff and they never skimp on their ingredients.  The hash browns are mostly bland.  They have quite a variety on their menu and their food is average at best. You always get a consistant meal and  it is a good value for what you pay.  The service is always decent but I really wish that this place was kept a little cleaner.
