My friend and I came here for happy hour and really enjoyed the quaint and cozy place with a wonderful bay front view! We didn't stay for the live music but we caught the front end of it and it was quite enjoyable. The service is friendly. We had two different servers come by to check on us. The food was okay but for the price it was pretty good! On another note, it was really cute seeing these old couples dance happily to the live music.

    Notes:
    1. Happy hour gets cancelled based on performances. Check the website calendar before you plan on going.
    2. If you plan on staying for only happy hour, you can park in the parking lot for free as long as you agree to leave after happy hour.
    3. Parking can be a pain. I'm not sure where you would park other than paying the parking lot fee there.

Burger: A medium burger that was pretty good with melted Havarti, fresh lettuce, tomato slices, pickle slice, and crisp red onion served with crisp fries. The burger and fries was well worth the price.

Hummus plate: Tasty hummus served with chopped olives, chipped cucumbers, chopped tomatoes, and a red sauce. A fun finger food plate with fresh tasting options!

Grilled shrimp with coleslaw: Tasty well-cooked grill shrimp with a tasty green sauce with a side of coleslaw with shredded cabbage, green onion, onion, tomatoes, and minced cilantro. A tasty dish!

Overall, the music is wonderful, the service is friendly, the food is well worth the price, and the view is really nice! I'll definitely be back here again for happy hour and live music!

    Happy Hour everyday from 5pm - 7pm.
50% off selected food and drinks.

Check out the events page for upcoming entertainment - <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fhumphreysbackstagelive.com&s=c65c2af959ff8802974a1fe5c0e9e2c53be260a6b98e0882da00582975608aa3" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://humphreysbackstag…</a>

Some great bands entertain here but not the largest dance floor.  Nonetheless always a fun time.

Come early so you can have a seat - $12 cover after 7pm.

I don't know how I haven't been to this place before!
Happy Hour had some pretty awesome deals for drinks and grub.

Highly recommend the grilled shrimp. The hummus was standard fare, and the chicken wings were just the right amount of heat!

The sunset was beautiful through the back windows, offering a clear view of the bay and some amazing sailboats.

Definitely a great place to unwind after work and enjoy a few drinks.

Our server, Kim, was extremely friendly and always smiling. On top of things the entire time. She definitely made the experience worthwhile.

After the band had their equipment tuned, it was noticeable how much the place filled up. Band was amazing, and the overall Humphrey's experience was clearly popular based on the turnout.

One of my favorite places to go any day of the week! It has the most fun atmosphere of any live muisc bar I have ever been too. Prices are fairly average for the food. The beer is really expensive unless you are for the happy hour. Music is always really good and fun to dance to.

WHAT HAPPENED TO HUMPHREYS BACK STAGE ON SUNDAY NIGHTS??????
I have lived in San Diego for the last 10 years and Humphrey's was a must experience attraction on the  list for  entertainment and out right partying until you drop!.
The bands the performed were always great . But the icing on the cake was  John Phillips, by far the best DJ. in California, would have you on the dance floor all night. . The food was amazing and at a great price, plus you would dance it all off with live jazz and music from the DJ. Our bill for 4 would be well over 100.00, and we were happy to pay it.

However,  I am sad to report that  those days are gone. Humphreys of what we knew is no more. Instead there is a building with the same name, which is as dead as your nearby cemetery. Last Sunday 05/19 my fiance and I with a couple of friends went out to Humphreys, the band started early and played elevator 70'S music all night long.  And I was with my dad, who  born in the 50's, and lived the 70's and he didn't get u at all. Consequently,  for 4 hours every one in the place was bored to death. Out of 4 hours no one got out on the dance floor ! No one! Our bill was 43.00 w/ 4 people.  Unfortunately there wasn't any need to spend any more money on food and drink because we sat there the entire time and never danced.

If they don't change this "revamped" appeal they are going to lose a lot of money and their reputation The place was half empty and now I know why!.

I really like this place, not only because I stay at the hotel when I'm in town, but because its in a great location with a great view. The staff is super friendly and knowledgable. If you're there ask for Brady, he is a good guy and knows wine!

Really pretty place. The ambiance is nice The Decor is really pretty overlooking at night the harbor .  I go here to listen to my friends local gigs.  Looks like a classy place when you walk in the doors enter to a very beautiful lobby with paintings and photos with musicians. The bar area looks clean and nicely lit.  The tables are with  lit candles that make the ambiance smooth and classy.  The times I've gone I've listened to various artist like Ray anthony for Jazz, Rising Star, Wildside band, major interval etc. Sometimes it's not too crowded.  It's a quaint place to meet on shelter island.  Next door they have the restaurant. The landscaping is pretty too. Parking not to bad I get parking most of the times. I've gone during the evening 8 p.m to 10 ish.  It's been slow lately but if more people knew of the place i"m sure they would like it. It's a classy looking place.  The drinks are average. I haven't really ordered anything but ice water and I was served promptly without attitude. Professional.   I think if you 'd like to just sit in listen to some music candle lights you'll enjoy. Music acoustics are fine. You'll be more into the ambiance...

I checked out the Friday happy hour and highly recommend it. On a clear day, I'd imagine the sunset is spectacular. Shame on me for forgetting/disregarding Shelter Island in the general realm of happy hours.

The drink and food deals are fantastic - 1/2 off most items. My wine ended up being about $3.50 a glass. The hot wings and hummus are standard-issue HH offerings. Next time, I'll try the $5 burger or other items. The music was really fun and fresh and the crowd tends to swing on the older side, which is a nice change. The only drawback is how crowded everything can become. My friend arrived before 5 pm and could barely find a seat at the bar. Apparently, the empty, "reserved" tables in the back cost $100. How silly.

Dont let the stars fool ya, this place is actually great, the food and happy hour are fantastic! I just need to post about the service, the worst I have ever seen!!! We were treated so poorly by a waitress who's name starts with a B and it also stands for the other!  We had to flag her down several times to get service, she kept walking right by us without a word.  We decided to order a happy hour plate to go, but by no means were we ready to leave just putting in an order. She raised her voice at my husband that we couldnt take happy hour food to go and told him he was skirting the system.. FYI, we didn't know the rules! She brought us our food and the check, in otherwords, she dismissed us..We were not ready to go yet, great band was playing and I wasnt even done with my food.  We even ran into some friends that go there often and they said they service stinks, the go to the bar to order.

Not sure we will be back to the bar.. The Hotel is wonderful. :)

Free parking across the street! Yay!

I've come here a few times to see my friends perform. It's a cool intimate venue, the servers are helpful and the little bottle of champagne you can get here is yummy (and super strong although that could just be me as I'm a lightweight).

Would definitely come here again for these small shows. It's super nice being able to easily see the stage and enjoy really comfortable seating. There are plenty of tables and chairs so you can give your hardworking legs sweet relief!

Love the classy yet relaxed ambiance!

Nestled back in the harbor the view of all the boats and the live Jazz music make for an enchantingly calm evening.  I met a girlfriend I hadnt seen in a while so it was the perfect venue for us to catch up.  Happy hour goes until 7 & I'll tell you something, being the happy hour enthusiast that I am, there are very few places that offer a decent list of quality wines for $3/4 a glass, and by glass I mean a well rounded pour. The crowd is definitely older so it would take the right flow of evening for me to return, but whether it be an overdue chat session or just a desire for a relaxing evening and great live music, whatever the case- I Will be back.

I'm not a fan of being charged a cover so I can enter into an establishment and spend money on dinner and drinks.  Perhaps this is used to keep out those who would listen to the music and not buy drinks, but it's more than likely being used to pay the band who was also soliciting donations from the stage.  There's a good view of the bay here and it's a great location for parking, but the nickle-and-dime approach is juvenile.

AMAZING Happy Hour. Good food at happy hour and drink discounts. The service gets to be a little slow but that can be expected as a music venue. The bands that play here are all good, I have yet to see a bad show, and the little or no cover puts it way over other venues such as Anthology. Overall I like this place and come by almost every Monday.

The burger during happy hour is only $5, and believe me it's a decent burger, good size, juicy, well seasoned. not to mention their fries are good. They also have sweet potato tots, which I must say are pretty damn good. Give it a try, it's worth it.

After a long hiatus from this venue I came back tonight to see Plato Soul play some fabulous music.

And I seem to have recovered from my previous invisibleitis.  My server was Amanda and she was great!  She was on the move and took care of all of her tables graciously and quickly.

Amanda should get a raise.  Hear that Humphrey's?

Terrible staff! We had our wedding at Humphrey's Halfmoon Inn last year and after our Reception decided to come here with our wedding party and guests to keep celebrating. I was asked rudely whether I had ID on me and told the guy (don't know whether he was a waiter or bouncer) that clearly I would not have an ID on me since I was in my wedding dress. I advised him that we were staying at the hotel and that he could always check with Reception. Jerk told me he still needed to see ID. So we and our guests left. I understand the law but I was obviously old enough to get married and drink at my Reception around the corner. There is definitely a nicer way to treat customers.

Steve G is right on regarding the food prices. - See his 12/3/2011 review.

Understaffed, service staff worked hard but not enough of them and no support (i.e. they had to bus tables not just serve).
Took way to long to get an order in, for the drinks and food to arrive, etc.

Over 20 minutes between receiving the check and getting a receipt back.

    A/C broken?...way warmer inside than outside last Saturday 5 - 6 pm.

    Music way too loud.

I went for Happy Hour hoping to have conversation with some friends.  Food-ok.  Drink prices, ok.  BUT, a loud band at 5 pm?  Seriously?  (And, not that good of a band, the singer was screechy.)  The waitress was attentive and efficient, but I won't put this on my favorite HH list.

Food was ok, but our servers Table service was ridiculously terrible. We ordered apps, someone else delivered it and we finished them and ordered/drank THREE more drinks from the bar before our server returned, and even then she dropped off the bill instead of asking if we wanted anything. We managed to order another round of drinks and a $12 blackened chicken quesadilla (couldn't find any chicken in it). After waiting with empty glasses and no server for 30 minutes we gave up, I went to go stand at the server station to try and find our waitress to pay, my fiance went out into the lobby. The head waitress went outside and accused him of leaving without paying, he kindly informed her I was waiting at the server station trying to pay since we had not seen our waitress in 30 minutes again. The head waitress found me, we paid and left.
The venue was great but our server should seek another profession.

We went here twice while staying at the hotel....we went during Happy Hour both times. They deals are good on the food. But the food is just OK. What scared me was that the food was half price during happy hour.... And I would never pay double for what we had. I tried the avocado BLT. And it was nothing special. My wife had a burger....and again.... Nothing fancy. Just a burger.

Service was good. At 5pm on Friday there was a band playing.... But that is another review unto itself. Just don't go when "Dusty and the Love Notes" are playing.

Absolutely WONDERFUL!!! My husband and I had the pleasure to enjoy the Sunday brunch! They had a large range of food to choose from and is not the normal boring buffet type brunch. The waitress were awesome and made sure we did not have empty glasses!!! We will definitely go back!!!

Review is for music venue only.
I wanted to go dancing and this place was recommended to me. Gary and I walked in while Viva Santana was performing. Gary likes them so we stayed, and ended up dancing. The place was packed, which is not hard to do. The crowd was in there late-30s to mid-50s, which is what we wanted. Getting a drink at the bar was no problem. The bartenders were working quickly to satisfy everyone's needs, now if they only knew how to make a drink. I have had more bad drinks past 4 months, since moving to SD, then I had in the bay area for 11 years!  The dance floor is really small and there is no room to overflow, as the tables are a couple of feet from the perimeter. The music was obscenely loud. My ears were buzzing when we left. The dress code is a mystery to me, ranging from hoodies-shorts-flipflops to jeans-dress shirt, and every thing in between.
It is a place I would like to go dancing, when there is a DJ playing.

Great spot to meet up before or after a concert. Fun musical memorabilia decorates the walls and previous concerts are aired on their multiple flat screens. Reasonable prices for food and drink and it looks over the boats in the marina.

The best Happy Hour I've been to in San Diego. 1/2 off drinks and food Happy Hour 5pm-7pm (except concert nights). There is a cover charge after 7pm. I suggest you go early, get a good seat and hangout until the band plays. A great place to socialize, dance or just enjoy the music!

I absolutely love this place. I've been going here at least once a month for the past 4 months to listen to their daily gigs (which, for the most part, are underground blues bands). My boyfriend and I usually come here during happy hour because it is such a great deal for awesome food. Not only do they play good music and serve amazing food, they also offer a beautiful view next to the water in Point Loma. It definitely adds a lot of character, ambiance, and authenticity to the San Diego scene. He and I were, relatively, the youngest couple there, but that doesn't make us feel awkward. Many of the regulars that we've encountered are super friendly and fun to talk to. They have a dance floor open during nightly entertainment. However, it usually gets occupied by "older" blues and rock-loving swing dancers. I definitely have no moves, but it's always fun to see others that can show off what they learned during their weekly ballroom/swing dance classes. For food, I definitely recommend their shrimp and scallop salad, calamari, shrimp quesedillas, and chicken wings! Their sandwiches are also yummy :). We usually order a $60 value meal, but since it's Happy Hour, we only have to pay $30! I love Humphrey's and cannot get enough!

Great weekday happy hour specials.  Far cheaper than many lesser places, upscale feel.  I guess if you want loud music, then go for it.  If you just want to get the specials and a seat, get there early before the music starts.

Came here for my nephews party for Sunday brunch.  Had reserved the lounge for a mixed crowd for adults and children. The idiots setup high chairs for children around standing bar tables with stools!!!   Not only could the children not reach the table buy you could barely see the tops of their heads!!!!  They could have easily seated the party on the normal tables everyone else was seated on.   Their only solution at this point was to break up the party into different rooms!!'. WTF??? At this point we really had no other alternatives.  When we approached the management they were reading from "customer service 101 which is the same book that teaches "we give no refunds!". The on shift manager ruined a perfectly beautiful Sunday brunch which was a special baptism for my nephew and family. Instead of trying to empathize with the customer (my sister)  the manager just made her cry (and that takes a lot as she is a cops wife!!!).   I always tell myself that I would return to places that serve "ok food" bit had excellent service.  This is a place that had ok buffet but terrible management so I will never return nor recommend to anyone.

Ok, here is what you need to know:

Humphrey's "Backstage" (the bar area) offers Happy Hour, every day of the week including weekends, from 5 to 7 p.m., with pretty damn good live music (and with no cover), and nearly all of the food and drinks are half off the normal price.  So, if you ask for a Grey Goose martini, it's only 5 bucks because it's normally 10.

And you get some extremely entertaining people watching thrown in for free.  It's a 50-something crowd, nearly all touristas, and the loud Tommy Bahama shirts are out in full force.  Let's face it, tourists can be hilarious.  We love them because they are helping our economy and we sympathize with them, too, because we are all tourists ourselves when we step outside of our little towns.  But the bottom line is that they act and dance sillier than regular folks and it's great fun to watch.

By the way, the $5 cheeseburger is excellent (as are the fries) and let's give a special nod to the calamari appetizer.

Humphrey's Backstage is almost exclusively supported by tourists but the locals are missing out on some solid music and excellent food and drink deals.  It's cheesy, cheap, good fun.

This is the the place I go right before a concert.  I don't really like that it is always packed and extremely loud (to the point that you really can't hear the guy your talking to seated right next to you).  But, I've had some pretty good appetizers - the crab stuffed mushrooms, the fried calamari, the quesadilla.  Not so good is the sushi and the service can take quite awhile.  Bottles of wine are reasonably priced.  Decent place to go right before a Humphreys concert.

Great after work spot for drinks and light dinners which are very affordable!  The crowd was 40ish plus the night I was there with lots of couples, but I was there for the beer and food any way!  The place was packed, but our server was on top of things and very efficient.  I'll certainly be going back as my tab was less than $20 for dinner and drinks...and a show!

The friendly and helpful staff, well-made entrees and appetizers, excellent libations, and, best of all, intimate club with live music and  dance, make this San Diego's best date spot (or just fun with friends).  The setting, a romantic marina with an outdoors deck for sunset or stargazing on a moonlit night, is unbeatable.  At Humphrey's, one never feels ignored or left out. They aim to please their guests.
I always have a great time. Plus, right across the street, a magnificent view of San Diego across the bay.
