The Sunshine Saloon

It's comforting to know that Bob the bartender is still serving up the locals here. His eyes look tired but he is a dedicated man of 18+ years to the most OB of all OB hangs: The Sunshine. The food is the same, the attitude's the same, and the chatter of old wrinkled smokers is still loud and boisterous out on the patio. Not much has changed since I first crossed the threshold back in '97. But perhaps thats what we love about the Sunshine. It's an old friend who's always there for us. Sure that friend's annoying sometimes but when you were stranded and alone he came and picked u up in the rain. We all need friends like that.

When u are in OB, this is a great spot for a beer and ballgame on the tube. Grab yourself a seat on the patio, order up a pint and tell Bob I sent ya. And tip him well. He's a good man.

That's kinda all I gotta say. One of the busier and popular bars on the Newport (the OB Strip). I would visit sunshine on occasion in my OB days. Good happy hour that lasts only an hour. They are connected to an awesome taco shop too.

The reason why I say "oh Sunshine" is because you can have either a great time or a shitty time there. You can have fun with your friends one visit, only to come again and have a bartender be rude and dismissive of you.

The bouncers are on a perpetual power trip and always have been. They are huge fans of playing the "this ID is fake" game. One of them tried it on me once. Funny, because he checked my ID a few times before that. He said he could take it because it was fake. I asked him how it could be fake when he let me in without a problem the weekend before. He just smiled and chuckled and said "I don't know'.

Sunshine is filled with OB locals. If you like Ob then you should visit here. You end up seeing the same people here over and over. Other reviewers got the crowd description right. Lots of bros and Point Loma/Ocean Beach kids who have never really left OB. Has a slightly Pacific Beach vibe to it.

Great place for a drink or 2 if you are in the area or near the beach. Not really my style, but its very popular.

this place is best on a non-crowded night.  The staff is much more mellow.  I enjoyed going up top, checking out the view, listening to the night and havin' a drink with a few of my favorite peeps.
If the place was packed I might go somewhere else
