Yay for hyperion tavern. I've been going here for the last few Thursdays and it has been super fun. Thursday night is sketch party night. Paper and pens are laid out and you can draw whatever.  There are some amazing artists who come here. There is cheap beer and a really cool bartender Alex. The music here is fantastic. The dj is one of the best I've ever heard. This place is cheap and super fun. Go!!!!

Please Yelp Update this page!! The Hyperion Tavern is OPEN!

Everyone who has written prior to this has said all the regular stuff, parking is terrible, the location is hard to find, its is small on the interior, etc. I am going to tell all fellow yelpers the other stuff.

Thursdays are sketchparty. This is my favorite night by far. The bartenders put out butcher paper that stretches from one end of the bar to the next. Atop the bar is also a mass quantity of sharpies, pencils, and other drawing supplies. This is my favorite night not just for the ability to drunkenly draw on a bar, but to do it while drinking a cheap 32oz, and rubbing elbows with random strangers and other artists.

Side note, I am an adamant subscriber to Juxtapoz and had not had the opportunity to read the October issue. Last weekend when I finally sat down to read it, I came across a sprawl that looked familiar. After asking my fella about it he said he thought it was the guy we met last week at sketchparty. It was indeed!

Local Talent hanging out and drinking beers is a good sign of a cool scene. In addition to sketchparty, Thursdays are packed with DJ's spinning the most eclectic and awesome sets of music. There is a very small dance floor, that often times more people will crowd than necessary. You never know exactly the type of music the DJ will play next, which is so not like most bars in LA playing the same old tired radio tunes.

I love how the crowds vibes always amp up the feeling in this place. If you happen to walk in here and you feel like something is off,..... It's you! I have seen a few hipsters in here but they don't seem to run rampant as much as say at the CCLounge. I have meet quite a few people here that I see every time I come back in, becoming friends over beers and art, What more could you ask for?

The bartenders are awesome; funny, engaging and witty with a hint of sarcasm.

Yes the tavern can be hard to find, has zero parking, and yes the bathroom doors do not go all the way to the floor. If these things discourage you, I'm kind of glad.... There will be more room for me and my pals to bust a move, and drink cheap beer into the wee hours of the morning!

Ok, so how does a bar that doesn't serve food & only serves bottled beer get a 'B' rating? No lo so. What I do know, is that this bar is most definitely dive-y. Literally a hole in the wall across the street from Casita del Campo with no visible indicator that it is a bar other than a barber shop pole (???) - was that code for something? Bar itself has walls lined with law books, a couple of out-of-place chandeliers, a pretty extensive bar (in size, not in alcohol variety), a DJ booth, bathroom(s)? - only saw one & I went in, not even knowing if it was the girls/guys/unisex, and a projection screen.

So, the bathrooms...are...ummm...not the cleanest. Oh & have a saloon-inspired door, so people can literally see your feet as you handle your business (which I guess isn't too far from what a 'stall' does, but at least a stall is inside a restroom). & the time I went, they had no paper towels.

So why the 3 stars? The DJ rocked! Music is good enough to make any not-so-cash-strapped hipster stick around (not that I claim to be one). And by cash-strapped, I mean, it's a cash bar (c'mon guys, get with the times) & the ATM machine was out of service. Perfect. For someone who doesn't tend to carry wads of cash on her person, this definitely sucked big ones. So needless to say, my friend and I didn't stick around for too long.

The beers weren't pricey (about $5, I think?) and they had a selection of about 6-7 beers. Street parking. Hipster vibe. & Jesus is the bartender,

THIS IS NOT A DIVE BAR! IT'S A PLUNGER'S HALFWAY HOUSE! LOLZ!

Coat check? Hahaha... Are you effing kidding me?!

Drink menu? BEER! What more do you need?! Bring CASH!

Ambiance? Check out the men's restroom... A stall, no toilet, and a swinging door with a big round hole in the middle for creepy peeping toms! How's that for ambiance?!

    HAHAHA!

Actually, this is an OK place to have a beer and listen to great tunes. I went here to check out some reggae... Good dj! And their guest that night who sang a few songs... was really good! She sang reggae songs in French/ English/Arabic! That's so HOT! Did I mention that she's so sexy and gorgeous too! Too bad... she only had 3 materials to sing! =(
The crowd here is pretty chill and friendly!

It's a very tiny dive! A decade ago, I used to work a few blocks from this place... It was a S & M bar back then! From the outside, the building looks like an old front parking garage that's converted and painted black... Easy to miss... Look for a barber's pole! Inside, the vintage chandeliers, wall of law books, old cash register box, old beat up piano, and the dj booth behind a raggedy window pane makes up for the lack of everything else!

Lastly, I suggest you leave your "high expectations" at home... and your crap as well! LITERALLY!

    STAY CLASSY HYPERION TAVERN!!!

For you Dive Bar fans, this would most likely be a choice for you lot.  This place looks like a house from the outside, and that could be because it's situated between 2 houses.  But once you get inside(after i.d. check), you walk into a little bar that kind of has a bit of character to it.

Went here to watch some friends spin and the sound could have been better. The DJ set up has hope though! once they get all of the monitors working the place carries a good sound to it.  If you want reading material and you're into Law, they happen to have one of the best selection of Law books on the walls surrounding the west wall(which also deadens the sound.)

This place only has a beer selection at $5 a pop and the bartender is a nice cowboy hat wearing man.

WARNING: If you don't like hipsters...avoid.

Altogether this place was a good time, towards the end of the night the house djs spin some hip/hop eclectic beats and it gets the head nodding as the beers flow.  definitely check this place out at least once.

My boyfriend played a show here on a weeknight. It was free. My friends brought in subway sandwiches, and the people were cool with it. I liked that laid-back attitude.

They only sell beer, and only in bottles. And wine. But it's cheap, and I don't really do hard liquor anyway so that was fine with me. Also prevented ppl from getting too crazy in here.

In general just a chill, super intimate (as in, smaller than my house) place to listen to music, perhaps study for the LSAT with all the law books on the walls. Due to the tiny size, I would probably steer clear on weekends, cause I'm not into claustrophobia.

I knocked off a star cause of the bathrooms. The bathroom doors don't go all the way to floor so you feel like youre sorta out in the middle of the bar--ppl can hear you flush the toilet and stuff. That's weird. It's also incredibly dark in the bathroom.

If you want a fancy, high-class, upscale bar, or if you're expecting them to sell you hard liquor, don't even come within ten feet of this place. In addition to that, the beer selection is small, and the bathrooms aren't exactly up to par, but at least they function, and have toilet paper.

Okay, now that we have that settled...

Yes I did give it 4 stars. Maybe I'm being too nice. Who knows? But I truly enjoy the atmosphere here.  I've only come for the Rock Band night (not Guitar Hero) on Wednesdays, so I can't really say anything about the place on other nights. The chandeliers, the out-of-tune piano, the law books, the old-school cash register...it all gives Hyperion that certain charm. The RB song list is pretty decent (not as long as other places). The bartender is awesome. Sometimes a DJ shows up and plays a funky selection of songs, which I like. The people are super friendly, and if they need someone, you can join them onstage and play a song with them regardless of what difficulty you play. What matters is that you have fun and not take yourself too seriously.

This place is funny. But I don't think I'm going back.

I hate using the term "hipster bar" but this place is the definition of hipster bar. Beer only, cash only, get ready to shell out $4 for a PBR (fuck that!). I went on a Tuesday night, which is Club Ding a Ling.

Oh Club Ding a Ling. I'm not a hater, but you're not my type. Tiny bar, okay that's fine. With live music? Um. Didn't work for me.

I enjoyed my beer but I definitely pulled the "I have work in the morning" excuse. Staying at this place all night would have given me a headache.

This place is quite small, as is the menu.  BEER, that's it.

The lighting is sexy. Theres an entire library of books on the back wall's corner, however i doubt any one can read these books under the sexy lighting. i dunno.

Tuesday nights  Don Bolles hosts wacky, mind altering "DING A LING". The stage isnt big enough for a band to play on, but they try. Close quarters. I dig it.

The only bad thing there, is that they dont take credit cards. They need to fix that.. No one carries cash these days. COME ON. I havent carried cash since i was in the 7th grade and saved all of my change all week to get into the rocky horror show every Saturday. Usually people who are out drinking are 21, plan to spend some money and have a credit card.  get with it.
....if you actually remember to bring cash b4 hand, youll have a good time.
Basically, i love the place and i recommend going. But i also recommend to the people who OWN it, to spend 50 bucks on a handy devise called the credit card machine.

Teensy cute bar with a beer only menu. I enjoyed the atmosphere....I wanted to read alllll the law books on the wall. Judging by the photos here, looks like some lucky ducks have. I'd love nothing more than to sit down with some lawbooks and drink a Hoegaarden. Hard to find, but once you're there, it's easy. I loved it.

Ohwait, I forgot. This place gets four stars because I was sitting at the bar next to these people who were on their first date, and the guy asked the girl if she ever stuffed her bra, and she said yes. Boing!

Went for Club Ding-a-ling. I grew up in the Bay Area and looking around this place led me to believe that this is where all the kids from the Gilman decided to go when they grew up.
I hope that makes any sense to punk rockers of just Bay Area transplants.

Bar is small. Beer only. And the beer is overpriced. Not a good selection either.
If I had my wits about me I would've brought my own.

It was pretty laid back atmosphere. Caught a few acoustic acts and left.

I will go back but you won't catch me paying $4 for a Pabst.

Where to begin?  Part of me wants to give this place 5 stars for fuckin' rocking out to its own beat and not caring whether it has one customer or a million.  Another pat of me wants to give it one star because of the sheer awkwardness and confusion that abounded.  3 stars seems like a reasonable compromise to me.

My friend and I were jonesing for some fun the other night after Vice's 15th anniversary party on Melrose and Heliotrope.  I suggested this place since I remembered seeing it on one of the weekly yelp emails.  I expected it to be a hipster dive because that's how it was described and that's the perfect category of bar for its location.

What I wasn't prepared for was how hipster and how divey it would be.

We drove by it twice.  The outside has very little to alert its present outside of a barbershop pole.  We parked down the street and entered, immediately noticing the following: a whole wall dedicated to law books (dating from the early 1900s), a DJ spinning contemporary rap while an old TLC documentary played on the screen, wood paneling that made me feel like we were inside a sauna, and chandeliers that just did not belong.  All of this combined with the overly hipster vibe of the place (just based on the type of clothing people wore, hair styles, and general disinterested attitudes) made for an interesting time indeed.

I have nothing against hipsters.  I think they go to extremes in the way they act and dress but I'd like to think I'm accepting of everyone.  I enjoy many of the activities and bars that hipsters like, but this was by far and away the most hipster place I have been (previous bar with that distinction was the Cha Cha Lounge).

So, they only sell beer here, and small variety at that.  There is a small dance floor where several people attempted to groove.  There were a couple tables where people sat.  There was a lonely guy at the bar staring blankly ahead.  And there was my friend and I, obvious sore thumbs in the place.  We were newcomers, outsiders.  No one treated us differently, of course, but it was fun to think that we were just observing this odd place.  We imagined that it wouldn't exist in the morning, that only appeared on special nights for special occasions.  It just has that sort of wonderment vibe.  Even though you're standing there you're not quite sure that it's real.

Supposedly this used to be a gay S&M club and I can see how the decor would lend itself to that.  You might say that that concept never really left the place.  Not that it feels like an S&M club, it just feels like there's something off that you can't figure out.

Yes, it's cash only and they only serve beer.  If either of those things are deal-breakers you're barking up the wrong tree.

Came here for Club Ding-A-Ling on Tuesday night and I had a pretty good time.  I dunno, because of the noticeably absent contingent of westside "industry" asshats that have been known to frequent other Silverlake bars this place has a definite non pretentious feel to it which I quite like.  This isn't a place to be seen, it's a place to slip under the radar.  There is an intimacy about the place which makes it feel like no one who is also there patroning the bar with you is entirely unapproachable.
On this particular night it seemed as if there were about 8 different acts that performed, none of them occupying the stage for more than 20 minutes to a half hour.  It was very variety-show-esque and this worked in our favor when we didn't particularly like a band that was playing, by the time we were finished with our cigarettes outside, they were done.
Eventually due to the complaints of my friends who wanted something to drink that was a bit stiffer than beer we left to make last call at Footsies but I will be back.

Beer and wine?  They don't have wine.  Or hard alcohol.  But if you've got a flask, you can bring whatever you want!

This bar is super close to my loft.  I like it because I can stumble in drunk and it's either totally dead (which I like) or totally packed (which can be fun).  I've seen some pretty bizarre lives shows.  From shoegaze to country and western and even spoken word.  Sometimes I walk in here sober and after one beer feel like I'm on acid.  It's dark and weird, but in a good way.

Ha! People are giving the place bad reviews with 5-star ratings, obviously trying to preserve this little dive bar's "best kept secret" status. I don't blame you all. The place is small and crowded enough as it is.

I have only been here twice on "Club Ding-A-Ling" nights (go look 'em up on Myspace) hosted by Don Bowles. The first time I was here they had a Serge Gainsbourg night. The second time (last night), I saw an electrobilly-punk act from France and had a blast. I have been told that the music acts here are often obscure, weird and hit or miss but I haven't been disappointed yet.

    Will be back!

It was a fateful birthday night and my friend from Portland called... what better a birthday than one shared with... an awesome boy that lives too far away sadly.

Nonetheless, off on the train I went to meet up with him.
We had to kill some time before it opened, so set up at Casita Del Campo prior... which was great considering they only had beer at Hyperion.

The bar had a line to get in before it opened but it was no problem whatsoever getting in, nor getting drinks in a timely fashion.  On a chalkboard above the bar it says the names of 5 beers and under it "Only beer, don't ask."

There were chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, a live band playing some great tunes and we sat down in some chairs and read some old law books that lined the back end of the bar.

"Are those real or just for decoration?" I asked my friend.

He grabbed a book and handed it to me "It's real dear."

Nonetheless what a nice little unmarked spot.  It was secretive... it was divey.. it was... quite a good time all around.  However beer only and the fact they don't take plastic loses it a star in my book... that, and the beer offerings were not enough to make up for the fact that it was only beer there.  Sorry, I'm a pseudo beer snob and not a hipster... it takes a little more than PBR to make me happy.

I am quite the fan of this place.

Technically I am giving it six stars, but deducting one, for lack of credit cards.

All bars don't have to be all things to all people if they meet certain needs well, this is why I dig this space.  Personally I like In-N-Out with their 5 items over every other fast food place.

This place has limitted beers, I am ok with that. Not alot of seating, I am OK with that. No valet, I am DEFINITELY OK with that.

Basicly all the bullshit that goes along with going out in LA has been stripped down into what going out could be, and turned into this. I dig it.

Plus there are lots of cool little shows.

A definite concept I like is the beer holder at the door. For when you want to go outside, there six little numbers on a rack for you to put your beverage. That is the kind of  attention to customer's needs I crave

First off....only beer. That's a big party foul for me. Call me old fashioned but i like my bars to be umm.....bars. This however is not what i would call a bar, i guess that's what a tavern is but how would i know. Its more like a grownup clubhouse for silverlake hipsters who drink stellas. Don't get my wrong its pretty nice and there are things i like about it. The chandeliers add a nice touch, the lights are kept pretty dim and the walls are lined with what seems like law books?

I come here only to hear local bands (in some cases not so local bands) pass thru on unassuming weeknights. So i am trying to review this place more so as a venue than as a bar. I've only been here a few times and my experiences have all varied. What i will say is that it is way to small. Most times the band can not even fit on the stage. As in last nights case where the band just ended up playing their set on the floor. I actually did a head count once....25 people is actually a comfortable amount. Anything more than that and it becomes difficult to reach the restrooms and the bar. The sound could be good or shit depending on the band. I would make a suggestion to the owners to not have such loud bands play there since the sound can be pretty fucked up when cranked out at full volume. I have even heard of instances where the people in surrounding houses have called the cops out. That should be a clear sign to the owners.

They get another star for having nobody checking you at the door. I am always able to sneak a flask or water bottle cocktail in when i go. Every time i have went its been free, so that is another perk. I have seen some really great performances there so i don't wanna deter you from checking it out. I just say don't go expecting too much....it softens the blow and the treble.

You know that shady-looking abandoned shack on Hyperion across from Casita Del Campo? Some hipsters broke in one nite, put in a couple new lightbulbs, got a 6-pack of beer and called all their friends.

The party was such a hit that now they do it every nite! Sometimes a bunch of art school bands play and then we are treated to some spoken word, sometimes a hot chick plays the accordian and makes you dress up in costumes, sometimes there is dancing, and sometimes they have toilet paper.

Wait, are we revealing one of Silverlake's best kept secrets? Oops.

p.s. Just bring your own booze. It's so dark in there that no one will notice.

to clear up a few things-

    A) any place with giant ornate chandeliers is NOT a dive bar. i cant stress this enough, people. (see photos)

    2) there is an atm inside the bar so you can grab a quick bill. the no card thing is not a big deal.

III) there is dancing. fancy fancy dancing. where else in silverlake can you find that!? (and don't say akbar, or i will shoot you)

    4) relax about the only beer thing, they have stella, we will all be fine.

My review only applies to Wednesday's Rock Band Night -- I'm not sure what it's like on other nights...

I went to RB night at Hyperion and LOVED it.  That being said, there's a lot more they could do with the place. So here's the reasons for 4 stars.

    The Good:
    -  The crowd is hip and friendly.  I made a lot of acquaintances just by saying hi to everyone, and wasn't blown off the entire evening.  Really cool people hang out here.
    -  The setup for Rock Band playing is not ideal, but it's pretty good.  2 people on the floor, and 2 on a raised stage.  Because of cramped space, those on the stage (singer and drummer) have a projector that shines directly on them, which can make it difficult to see the TV screen that you're trying to play on.
    -  At the peak of the evening, people really got into the music.  We had a full bar applause after one set with a particularly good singer.  This is the kind of place that you can make up for lack of talent with sheer enthusiasm.

    The Bad:
    -  It's hard to find it!  There's just a tiny red-striped barber-shop-looking light above the door.  Look for Casita's and then park -- you'll be very close.
    -  They only serve a small variety of beer, all $4 each, with lackluster service.  The bartenders have to do double-duty managing the game and the bar, so you can be waiting for a while if you don't aggressively flag them down.
    -  Cash only.
    -  Did I mention no liquor?
    -  Dirty bathroom.  It didn't bother me, being a guy.  But I could see where girls might be a little intimidated.
    -  Sausage fest.  It seemed like all the girls that were there had their boyfriends with them.  (Though that might be expected on a Wed night...)

    The Summary:
All in all, I loved it, and will be returning frequently.  I think there's a lot they could do with the place, but maybe they're trying to keep the super-divey hole-in-the-wall feel.  It's worth a try.  Bring a small group of friends and rock out!

The Hyperion Tavern,  a quaint little hipster joint in Silverlake.

Last time I was there, some art performance stuff was going down on the tiny stage, which sounded a lot like Tiny Tim.  Interesting, except that the entire place was crammed full and deadly silent.  It made me feel rude for ordering a beer, it was that quiet....

Very odd atmosphere, a little pretentious at times, at least when I went.

Cash only, no liquor, and a limited beer selection which although not expensive, weren't cheap by any dive standards.   The bartender seemed ok, although a little slow and maybe a little timid to be working a bar.

I've heard the DJ's here are supposed to be kickass, but I left before the performer was finished.

Came here for a friends birthday and it was ok. It's really small so I think if I ever celebrated my birthday here I'd have to reserve the whole place which probably won't happen because:
    1. small beer selection
    2. cash only
    3. street parking was hard to find

I do hear their Guitar Hero wednesdays are pretty cool BUT I'm sure everyone who goes are experts and I'm still at beginning level. They should definitely have a Rock Band day so I can show my drum skills ;)

The place is small, but swankily decorated; their floor-to-ceiling wall of smart-looking books made me feel smart and I wanted to swing like a monkey on their amazing crystal chandelier.

The bar is hard to find and looks like a garage from the outside, but look for the barber pole and red lighting and you'll be OK.

I came here on a Thursday to see my friend's teacher's band play, and as a venue, the Hyperion Tavern is cozy and intimate.

I'm definitely coming back for Guitar Hero Wednesdays!

I would probably give this place 2 stars for not having hard liquor,, if it wasn't for the fact i now just pick up a flask of jameson at bogie's up the road and drink on a dime. i would probably also give it 2 stars for lack of parking and not having a sign,, just a red light bulb outside.. but then again,, that cuts down on the riff-raff.

its a little cabin on the wind down hyperion. wonder who dreamed of owning something so non-conformist to 'bar' standards, especially in LA. i've never been charged a cover, and have seen a couple decent bands here. some great italo disco gets played here on weekend nights. chillax, cozy, and definitely without any attitude.

I was just at the Hyperion Tavern last night, catching a friend's band, Borts Minorts, as well as a great 1979-style duo called Hard Place.

What can I say about the Tavern? it's not the perfect dive, but it's pretty damn close. A punk rock shack hidden on Hyperion, it definitely has character.

One side of the 70-customer-capacity room is the stage, which is no bigger than a dining table. The other side is a wall lined with law books. Two chandeliers uselessly hang from an already low ceiling.

The only drawback is that they only have beer, and bottle beer at that. But there's free popcorn. Still I could have beer and popcorn at home; so I will likely visit the Tavern if Borts, Hard Place or some other cool band is playing there.

Swung by here because lots of reviews mentioned the nyc style dive bar.   Walking in there it didn't feel like that all.  Thinking back about it, it kinda did (pbr beers, live band, small), but there was no booze and the layout didn't have the same atmosphere.  Plus the PBR was $4 which doesn't qualify as 'dive', but the rest of the beers were only $4 which does...

Very cool chandlers and a hot crowd.

Last night, I met the most near-perfect bar I've found since leaving NYC, and this bar is that bar.

I was drawn to Hyperion Tavern by the promise of Rock Band night (Wednesdays) - whence total gaming dorks strap on thee fake axes and thud away on faux skins and karaoke their way into dive bar fame.  Right up my alley.

The Death Bagel posse and I got there early - a bit too early (8:30p), as the bartender was just setting up.  The only reason this bar gets only 4 stars is because they only serve beer (and presumably a few non-alkie drinks), and since I can't have beer, we had to shimmy across to Casita de Campos for a 'grita.

Upon our return, we were treated to something like an hour straight of being able to rock for the masses - the place didn't get crowded until 11ish.  After this, it took quite a while to get some playing time, but the great thing is - if you're up front and people need a drummer or guitarist, you may be the chosen one.  Score!

All in all - great atmosphere (real books on real bookshelves!  chandeliers!  wood walls!  porthole on men's bathroom door!  popcorn!) and very close to my house.

Words of warning - you'll probably miss it the first time you try to find it - the building is low-slung, painted black ,and pretty much unlit.  Just look for the dark mass across the street from Casita de Campos, and you're there.  Just get there early on Guitar Hero/Rock Band nights (9pm) if you want to get a lot of game time.

First off, the best reason to come here is Wednesday nights, they have live Guitar Hero, on stage, karaoke style.  Come in early, write your name  and/or your friend's name down, have a beer, then cross swords on stage, for free.  It's awkward at first, but when the smoke machine turns on and you watch the bartender bring out his customized guitar built out of a hollowed-out, real guitar, you'll want to do it.

On other nights this place is a nice little secret and a great place to go when you want to avoid all the other crowded bars or to try something new.

As of now they only take cash and only sell beer.  I think they're working on a license, still.  I'll update them to four stars when then start selling liquor.

So I came for guitar hero night.....The reviews basically hit it spot on.....The place itself was tiny and sort of crowded, yet I didnt feel cramped, uncomfortable, or have trouble moving around....For the most part, the people rocking out on stage had some major talent.....Which made it hard for me to partake in any conversations with my friends because I couldnt keep my eyes off of the players.....

My friend Kim was bummed because she dosent drink beer and that's all they serve....And she couldnt even order water, because they didnt have ice and she's obviously a little high maintenance.

It had 2 bathrooms....I think one was for guys and the other one was unisex.....Which I didnt mind because it reminded me of New York.

As far as the crowd goes, I didnt get that great of a look because I arrived with good company and didnt really have any interest in anyone besides my friends....However, I think it was decent, and the bartenders were really friendly....

    No one was checking ID's.

Oh and apparently this used to be a hard core leather themed gay bar...And they still have some of the original decor left over from that.

This place is cool, if a little small...I've just learnt from another review that the books in the library are actually law books...that's just plain weird 'cause no one in this place looks like they'd give a shite?! ;-)

Al and I entered after a late supper in Casita del Campo across the street. The band was just wrapping up and a DJ played Souxsie and The Banshees and other ecletic bands. Her mixing was off, but it's hard with real 'band' music, and not an 808 drum machine ;-)

We stayed for a Heineken, stared at the girls and then hit the road jack...where did all the time go. It was like a time warp. I swear we walked in at 12am and left as the bar shut down. Ahhh, now I remember...we talked for 30mins on the street. Jeez don't we have homes to go to?!

My boys had been talking about "the tavern" for weeks and how much I was gonna love it.  We ended up there one Friday night.  I don't know if it was a very good example of turnout though because, from talking to a couple... ok, a few... ok, ALOT of the ladies scattered around the place, it seemed as though it was some sort of wrap party for a X-Box commercial.  Music was good though.  I love that they only serve bottled beer (and are a bit snobby about it).

Overall, everyone totally friendly, great neighborhood bar.

Oh yeah! Small, stripped walls, stools and standing only, law books, a stage that feels more like a bookshelf for humans and a nice variety of people.

I met lots of interesting people and didn't feel like I wasn't cool enough to be there! Nice.

I performed there with a group called LAYER and had a fine time looking down at the crowd from less than a foot away.  Not much room for physically expressing the music on the tiny tiny stage, but SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEYIT.

I recommend the Hyperion to anyone looking to escape jerkness and attitude.

oh yeah and make sure you only want to drink beer...or just sneak in your own little bottle of your choice.  They're not gonna care.

    okbye

I was thoroughly disappointed with this joint as it really offered nothing on a Saturday night -- which could be a good thing -- but not if you're lookingn for a drink, or even a quality beer. They had about 5 different types of beer, none of which sounded appealing. My friend and I pulled an in-and-out as the experienced bar-crawlers we are, there was no time to be wasted in a joint that didn't so much as have any reference to the fact that it served beer or any alcohol other than what the PBRs the few patrons were sipping on.

I mean, the Guitar Hero idea is frickin brilliant and all, but you may as well have the party at your place.... as it is, you've gotta bring your own flask.

Sorry, Hyperion, I really thought we could be friends.

I was lucky enough to be introduced to Hyperion Tavern by the smart and savvy Tim H. (thanks buddy!) Even though this bar is in my own backyard, who the f*ck knew?

It's small but it's got serious character. They've lined the shelves with actual Legal Code (like your favorite attorney's office, you'll feel right at home!)

The crowd is...ecclectic. Too different to be hipsters. It's like smashing together kids from The Factory and characters from a John Waters movie. Freaky, but oddly sexy...

Beer only. Cash only. Luckily I had company or it would've been too cool for school. Also, the music was rockin! My only tiny wish would've been a space to dance. I had to rock out on the bar stool. Oh well...

C'est la vie! And la vie is happening over there. Bar stool dance party and all.

This is probably the best bar I've been to in L.A. It's not a scene or filled with hipsters, it's just people coming to have some beers and enjoy some tunes.

The space itself is tiny, but not crowded. One wall is lined with old encyclopedia and law books, with pull-down "study desks" as extra tables. On the opposite wall, the DJ booth is in the back corner, next to a rickety-looking stage with a projection screen.  Old surfing movies and odd 70's Japanese films were playing, accompanied by an eclectic choice of music. There was a lot of stuff I didn't recognize but really enjoyed, along with some Grateful Dead and Steely Dan. How often do you hear Steely Dan in a bar anymore?!? Truly cool.

Beer is all they sell, but they do have Heineken, Pacifico, and Dos Equis, so even if you're picky, there's something decent for you to drink. The bartenders and the patrons are super-friendly and laid-back.

The bathrooms leave a little something to be desired, like perhaps better lighting and the bottom foot and a half of the door, but even that couldn't keep me away.

Cash only, and street parking is pretty limited.

My new favorite place of the week.  On wed night they have GUITAR HERO night where you get to partner up and battle it out on the little stage. There is a big screen behind you and even a fog machine. Ya super rad! People get pretty into it and you don't feel lame even if you're not that good. Just make sure if you suck to really rock out and put on a show. Its cash only and they just serve beer but its good and cheap! The crowd is mostly hipster mixed with nerdy hippyish. It's super small but when I was there it wasn't too crowded. Nice and dark too. Just super hard to find as I drove past a few times. There is one of those old fashioned spinning barber things on the door so look for that. Oh and  saturday night is supposed to be fun too!

    Whoa!
What do you get when you have a banjo and a fiddle player rocking out on a small stage?
    Give up?

You get one hell of a grumpy Thomas and soon to be pissed off Miranda.

This is where I like to go when I want to twist off my own bottle cap on my $4 Blue Ribbon.

This is also the place I like to go when I want to be just confused for a bit... Thomas described this place as a Hippy Drama Club / Rec Center  - I'd toss in the Glee Club for good measure... I just sit there - not knowing what to think. This place is just odd... the wall frame is exposed - the seating is a mess - its just crazy. Its like some kids club house.

The second night we roll in - its movie night. Okay, cool.... The DJ was actually great until she started stopping and switching records mid song. Kids these days - so impatient. Oh, and the bar tender disappeared to play records after serving us our beer - we left once those were finished...

maybe those were bad nights - but this place is fucking nutty.
