This place sucks.  Dont care what kind of a "LB landmark/establishment/whatever" this is .... Its expensive for the crap you get... Funny to see hipsters come in here and enjoy the place bc its a "landmark"....  Wack... Wont ever come back

The pickled eggs were great! The bartender was horrible! Cash only. Something that really struck me as odd... no ice. A bar without ice? Weird.

Simply the best. While I didn't grow up in California my family did and every couple months when we go to the coast this is naturally the very first place we stop.

I was hooked on this place the first time I experienced the Joe's special/pickled egg/pretzels. As a kid I loved accompanying it with a cool little bottle of Coke. Now I vary between Coke/root beer and the ridiculously cold and fresh beer (I miss the Pabst by the way...but I know the story and understand y'alls decision).

In a nut shell, this place is just comfortable on all levels. It feels like home and has been a meaningful part of the life, and I didn't even grow up in California. Go experience history!

This is an awesome place to hang out, play pool and drink beer, probably not a good bet if you are taking your mother in law out for the evening.

Been here a few times and I just can't place my finger on what's missing from it. It's considered a neighborhood dive, but if you're actually from this area like I am, you know the clientele is definitely not from the area. You may also get some looks if you're not a over aged white man with some war stories to tell.

Despite that, awesome cold beers, decent food, pickled eggs, a great tavern decor, and relatively cool bartenders.  Worth giving a try, but I think the vibe at the Prospector is just a bit better. Maybe, because of more of a hipster influence there? :)

Best bar evar! My fiance and I love coming here! The beer is always cold and the pickled eggs are delicious. If you don't care for pickled eggs, they also offer sandwiches, the Joe's special is deeeee best! Great service, everyone is friendly.

In memory of our dear friend Pat *Cheers*

A cool neighborhood bar. Cold beer, sandwiches, and pickled eggs are served here. Nothing fancy about the menu as they serve domestic drafts only, sandwiches are limited to sausages and salami mostly, and the pickled eggs are the specialty here. I got the pickled eggs with pretzels and they are PICKLY!! Not my kind of snack but definitely something to try. Prices are cheap.

The vibe here is very neighborhood-ly? A lot of old school Long Beach community memorabilia around. There are two main areas in the car, the front being where the main bar is, and the back where multiple pool tables are placed, as well as a few seating areas and TVs. One cool thing that struck me here was that they had a cell phone booth... it basically looks like an old school phone booth but of course with today's technology it is designated for the cell phone, and its just a little booth with nothing inside except of silence lol. Coming here after work, the crowd started coming and the clientele is mainly blue collar workers, all looking just to relax after a day at work.

Great Bar, cold beer and decent food and shuffleboard. Bartenders need to get over themselves, Dude.... you serve beer to drunks, how cool can you be?

Great vibe from this very old & storied  tavern.  Almost feels like walking into a general store in the Old West.  Both the bartenders and the regulars are friendly and the food is decent and very reasonable.
Plus they have root beer on tap!  And it is terrific!
Be sure to grab a bag of roasted (on site) peanuts before you leave, they are wonderful!
    Will definitely be returning.

This place is great for an ice cold beer on a lazy evening. They have super friendly bartenders and delicious pickled eggs. I even liked their corned beef sandwich(went for St.Patty's) and I normally can't stand corned beef. The only draw back for me is that they allow all ages in here which means occasionally some hipster teens come in and can be fairly obnoxious.

I love this place, its a beautiful dark wood bar with lots of character and history, the bar is always full of regulars who have been coming for generations.  Here you'll find mostly an older crowd white crowd, but the scene is eclectic and I certainly always feel welcome.  The vibe is very jovial and friendly.  Its common to even see families there on the weekend, parents will bring their young kids who can enjoy their own frosty mugs of root beer.

The place maybe needs a good dusting over, but I really think it has such charm!  The tables and benches are solid wood and there are old school desk chairs to sit at too.  hough its crowded I've always had good luck and managed to get a spot to sit at.

There's a back room with a few pool tables too if you have a larger group it would probably be easier to hang out in this space.

I really enjoy the sandwiches and pickled eggs which are garnished with black pepper and served with pepperchinis and pretzel sticks.  This makes a great snack or lunch on a warm sunny CA day.  An icy cold goblet of beer is a must.  I like the dark ale on tap, I forget the name but it has a ram's head.  One is perfect for me!

Just moved to the area, its walking distance from my place so I've already made this my official "Spot" in the neighborhood!

You can tell this is a really beloved place.  People proudly sport their Joe Jost Tees traveling the world.  I think once you've been to this place you'll understand why!

My ol' man used to drag me here as a kid. I've been addicted to specials and pickled eggs ever since.

Soon I'll be dragging my kids to this place...and so-on and so-forth.

    Love it...

A favorite of ours for over 25 years.  Didn't really get over the change of the beer a couple of years back but still made it in a couple times a month.  But now . . . .with the change of the sausage . . . . we are done.  Sorry.

And you can tell yourselves that the sausage is 'better' ' just like the old days' - blah, blah, blah, but the talk at parties and get-togethers in Long Beach almost always comes around to the same question,  "Has anyone tried the new sausage at Jost's?  It's just not right. What a shame."

    What a shame.

This place just has a great feel to it.  A lot of history (3rd generation of my family to visit, for example) and a lot of cold beer and simple, yet great, bar food.

If you don't like Joe Jost's then you don't like dive bars.  For the gentlemen complaining about an 11 dollar tab for 2 beers and 2 eggs I'd recommend staying home.  Some places charge 11 for 2 beers and you don't get 2 eggs of any sort along with it.

If you do like dive bars then jump on in.  Pool and game tables in back, benches and beers up front.  What's not to like?

Great, old school, blue collar pub.  Not enough places like this left in the world!  You'll probably die of a massive heart attack if you eat here on the regular, but in moderation, the food is gloriously, deliciously comforting.  The Special and the egg salad sandwiches are both AMAZING!  The pickled eggs look frightening, but are really delicious.  The bartenders are all really nice if you are.  I always end up here after the Long Beach flea market.

2 beers and 2 rubbery yucky pickled eggs = $11.  Awful.

    Cruddy dive.

Not my favorite place to go but if you want an easy way to get full from a large serving of beer and a simple sandwich, this is your place. I've been here many times but not so much recently. I know this bar has been featured in numerous movies, which is pretty cool but that still isn't pushing me to become a frequent visitor. The crowd is definitely older, mid 30s-40s I would say. The pickled egg is good and you can't beat the generous portion of pretzels that come with The Special, which is a decent sandwich with a Polish sausage, Swiss cheese, a pickle and some mustard.

Its very chill to go for lunch or a break. The food is fairly good, I love their chicken salad, they have this really tasty dressing they put on it. It is also pretty fast if your in a hurry. However, this was my second time here and one of the boys that works there was very nice to me last time but i told him i was not interested. Unfortunately the poor kid was still there and was not ready to stop trying. I didn't want to be an ass so i just ordered to go.

If you are not a burly middle aged man, you might feel a bit out of place, but you gotta love the simple menu. Can't go wrong with a Special, a pickled egg, and an ice cold Root Beer!

What can you say about J J's...This is the "Cheers" bar for the greater Long Beach area (everyone is welcome...but you may have to wait for a seat depending on when you go).  I went there on 11/05/12 & again on 11/16/12 with my wife.  I firmly believe you can't get enough of the J J experience, which is really a one of a kind outing.  Great, really, really cold beer, which I love, and great sandwiches & eggs.  If you have never been here, go, but respect the place and the locals.  I took my closest friend, who lives in Santa Rosa to J J's & he really enjoyed it.  Everywhere I go when I wear their T-shirt (even on a cruise out of New York), I find someone who has been to J J's..

Favorite LB bar, top 5 for me anywhere in the world. Staff is friendly, beer that forms ice due to extreme cold is always great, and there is an addictive quality to those pickled eggs.

Someone wrote "upscale dive" as the description, this is right on.

This is a Long Beach institution, with a relaxing atmosphere, really friendly staff, and the coldest beer you will ever have.  You have to try the pickled egg, get the special loaded, and drink a Busch while sitting at the bar to get the full experience.  They say it isn't kid friendly, but my 12 year old loves the root beer, a box of crackerjacks, and playing shuffle board while watching sports.  Plus kids can sit at the bar here.

Its cash only, but the food is cheap and so is the beer (Busch that is).

Sort of obsessed with this place. Like really obsessed. Joe Jost's is a classic locals only hang out. Pretty sure it hasn't changed in 30 years. They keep it simple and it seriously works for them. Ton's of old guys at the bar. Great lunch time hang out on weekday or weekend, I think they close at 9 pm.

If you go, don't be an as*hole. Order an ice cold beer (they don't have any IPA's on tap, don't ask), a Joe's Special, and an order of pickled eggs (they sound gross but are extremely bomb).

I love it so much that I had my engagement party here in the back room. All you have to do to reserve a space is call a couple weeks ahead. Everyone said it was the funnest (I know this is not a word, thanks) engagement party they have ever been to!

I plan on being one of those old people hanging out at the bar in 35 years, hopefully they allow chicks.

Note: Kids are welcome at Joe's Jost. I plan on being there every mother's day.

The draft beer is extremely cold. So cold it forms icicles at the top of the schooner

    For this alone, 5 stars.

    I like cold beer.

4-Star = Super Cold Beer, Pickled Eggs & Pretzels, Sandwiches...

Customers = College Guys, Bikers, Married Men escaping family life for a few hours, and Old Timers reminiscing the good ol' days and probably sharing Vietnam and Korean War stories.  Some douchebaggery at times.

What's missing here are  NO MA'AM shirts.

Ok, so I just got back from Joe Jost's with a group of friends.

    The good:

    Free pool
    Root beer on tap (yum)

    The bad:

Special sandwich (If I wasn't starving I would have passed)

    The ugly:

    Location (seedy part of LB)
Clientele (Almost got into a fight with some douchebag because I stood too close to his pool table)

There really are better options for the dive bar/pool vibe in LB.

    I will pass next time.

Went to this cool spot to have some beer, while watching the playoffs.   Joe Josts is totally legit, the deals are worth it.  The serve the beers really cold, its perfect any day.

I ordered 3 Scooners at $5.90 a piece with a jar of pickled eggs and the special.  The special is a simple bratwurst sandwich, made with yellow mustard , a slice of pickle, and 1 bratwurst all on a rye bread.  The sandwich is very tasty and the meat is tender.  The bratwurst packs a little kick but not too spicy. I found out they make the sausages on the premises, so you can taste the difference.
The pickled eggs are so good, its marinated with pepperoncinis and the pickle juice.  The good thing about the pickled eggs is that you can taste the tangy, salty, vinegary marinate throughout the egg.

I recommend stopping by here its a good deal, $5.90 beers served in scooners ,$4 Sandwiches, $5 per hour for pool or shuffle board, $11.50 for a jar of 9 pickled eggs or $1.25 per.  Cool atmosphere that takes you back with friendly people around you.  I also heard that they filmed the Bodygaurd, and Gone in 60 seconds here.

Wow, have been wanting to check Joe Jost's out for awhile.  It did not disappoint.  Started with an egg and a schooner of the house beer, Busch.  The beer is ice cold...28 degrees.  How they can make Busch taste this good, I'll never know.  Then I tried an egg.  Awesome how they put it in with the pretzels and shake it up.  Barkeep told us they sell at least 300 a day.  Classic bar food!  Had to try to the Joe's special sausage sandwich.  Also outstanding!

Classic feel, great, friendly bar tenders.  This place is what every bar should aspire to be!  Hope Joe Jost's is around in another 100 years.

One of the greatest bar's in America.

Sit at the bar, order an ice cold schooner of something simple, order a "special" sandwich with some mustard pretzels and soak it all in.

There's few places quite like it...an American classic.

    Grew up here.
Came back and still go to enjoy a Schooner, a Joes Special and a pickled egg or two.
My engagement after party was here by request from all my family as this place has a special place in all of our hearts and for our gullets.
Pool and shuffleboard.  This place is view of the past in LB that remains a local tradition.

So yummy! Never thought I would enjoy pickled eggs as much as I did. I started out just with one.... By the time I left I was three down. In fact, as I write this review, I am salivating at the thought of Joe's pickled eggs. I would recommend this place in a heartbeat!

However, if you are looking for a place with a variety of food, this would not be it. The selection of sandwiches is around... 5. Ranging from salami to liver. I didn't try any of them, but they did look pretty good.

Good brew, good food and good people. What else can I say that hasn't been said? This is my favorite place to have a brew and play some pool (though their pool sticks are beat up). Any place that hands me a schooner of booze with a thin layer of ice on top is where I want to be!

A Joes special, three eggs and a schooner of Busch is all you need to know. I want to live inside of this magical land of sandwiches and beer.

Places like Joe Jost's make me so incredibly happy and super thankful to be alive (and over 21).

It's what can best be described as a "big small" place: a small bar area with large tables and that classic regulars-only divey kinda feel to it, and a rather large pool hall-type back area with a gorgeous array of photos old and new. You know you're stepping into legendary when you see Joe Jost's shirts from the world over -- the Great Wall, Macchu Picchu, the Tennessee Volunteers' home field, etc. -- on one wall, and the infamous calendar girls from back in the day on the opposite. So cool.

They have a full-sized snooker table. Snooker!

I still reel when I think of the serious steal I feel like I got away with: one spicy special, two regular specials, one egg salad, three hard boiled eggs and a handful of pretzels, two root beers and two schooners of their 'priciest' beer (at about $6... splurge!) = $30.

This is the kind of place where everybody not only knows your name, but likely also every single skeleton in your closet. In a great way. I only wish it were closer to my house so I could join the ranks as well.

Joe Jost, you really are so cool, polar bears honestly do wear sweaters around you.

Helpful HInt: Do not order Guinness, unless you like your Guinness tasting like some kind of rotten citrus fruit.

Ownership should definitely fix the problem with the Guinness, I don't know how they still allow it to be served and it's the most expensive beer they have.

Bartender was nice enough to give me a free Schooner but do not be afraid to let them know the Guinness tastes like B@lls if you end up ordering it.

But inexcusable that the owner's still allow sh#t beer to be served. Guinness is not the easiest beer to serve and they have long beer lines from the back that could account for the rotten taste. Luckily I didn't have any bowel problems from the Guinness.

This place is pretty awesome, shuffleboard, pool tables and pretty good sandwiches and amazing pickled eggs.

Without the beer problem this easily could be a 4 or 5 star place because it has a really chill atmosphere.
