I came here last night with some friends for drinks and it was okay. Drinks are really cheap on Thursdays (3 beers for $5) but there weren't many people and it cleared out by about 12:30. There are a lot of TVs, and sports games are usually on. I've been here a few times, and I've always had an okay time.
Last summer I came a few times for trivia, which was great! There were $2 pints of almost every beer, and the trivia was really challenging. I hope to come back for trivia this summer!
I've been going to Just Jake's since I moved to Montclair 4 years ago. The very first time I went in I was bombarded by MEN & SPORTS. I walked out & vowed never ever to go back. Eventually I decided to give it another try and now I am HOOKED. They have GREAT BANDS, GREAT HAPPY HOUR and Kenny knows how to make my special cocktail. Not to mention a SEXY man.
So, needless to say I am a Just Jakes FAN.
I went on a Friday around 8pm and it was pretty early. We got there right before the rush or after the rush. I"m not entirely sure. Â There was a live band that played 90s cover songs so we paid an $8 cover (didn't expect it, didn't really mind it, but probably would've wanted a heads up beforehand. Probably also why the bar wasn't that full when we got there).
From the drunken haze, I remember the service was very patient and friendly. They made sure we were helped right away and constantly came back to clear the tables and make sure that we were all set.
The beer was pretty cheap and we got a lot of it.
Food was meh. I got gravy fries which were pretty decent, but those are kind of hard to mess up so I wasn't expecting much. My friend ordered teriyaki chicken or something and it was just covered in sauce and not marinated. The chicken itself was pretty dry. Wouldn't order that again.
Otherwise, we had a blast and my friends and I had a great time. :)
$4 domestic pints and bottles, $4.50 premiums like blue moon. The only reason this place is getting 3 stars is because the band was awesome (Nine Deeez Nite). It's a typical mid-20's to young 30's night club. Standing room only once the band comes on...which makes it very difficult to get drinks at the bar. They seemed a little under-staffed behind the bar, sometimes it took up to 15-20min to get a drink. I didn't realize this would be a night club type place since there were tables when we got there. If the night club place is your scene....you'll like it, if not, steer clear.
Review Source:I found out about this place while at MSU & would always come for their 3 bottled beers for $3 (now $5) but I'm a regular now. Â Best nights - Trivia Tuesdays, Beer Pong on Thursdays (younger crowd), and live band on the weekends (always good music). I Never had a problem with any of the employees here and they are all down to earth (but definitely seen them be a-holes to deserving drunks haha). Â They also have an outside patio, pool table, back room & lots of tvs for sports. Â
Good beer selection, mixed drinks are always tasty with a kick and awesome prices. Â Happy Hr / early evenings / off nights is very laid back, mixed group of all ages & types - not too loud or crowded, good to sit and hang out for a few drinks. Â The night-time (usually their popular nights Thurs to Sat) they have entertainment, it gets darker, louder and wild - They move the tables to open up the room because it can get really crowded and open a second bar. Â Still a diverse crowd but more young.
food - think PUB/BAR food when ordering and you won't be disappointed (I think they serve food until 11PM?). Â This place is definitely more a bar than a restaurant, so order accordingly. Â They have awesome buffalo chicken, burgers, sandwiches, etc. Â It's more of a "Hey lets go grab wings/ apps & a few beers" kind of place so don't come to the neighborhood bar looking for an exquisite meal or brunch? lol... Its Montclair, there is plenty of other suitable spots for that
Allow me preface this by saying that I've been to Just Jake's for brunch a few times several years back and it was great. The restaurant area in the back was quaint, cozy, and decorated nicely. Now? It looks like who-did-it-and-ran. Tables strewn everywhere, blasting flatscreen TVs surrounding the room, and stacks of board games all over the place. What in the holy hell? No place settings, no decor, nothing. It was no longer a restaurant space...it was an all-purpose room.
Our menus were stained with God-knows-what and mine had a hair lodged in between the plastic. Beautiful. Â Had it not been 10 degrees out and had we not parked right outside, then I would have left. Brunch menu options were underwhelming. We both ordered a 3 eggwhite omelet with spinach, mushrooms, and onions. Our omelets were insanely greasy but the "mini potato pancakes" were as dry as construction paper. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Toast was stale, stale, stale. Even my club soda tasted strange.
We were the only ones dining there until a trio of clueless out-of-town tourists joined the "WTF party". I felt awful because I recommended and brought my trusting friend to this pathetic place. I am the Yelp Queen for God's sake. This kind of crap will ruin my reputation!
Brunch? Just Jakes? Just terrible. Just don't.
This place is really friggin' loud from Happy Hour on. My voice is gone just from having casual conversation with my friends. The band didn't even start playing yet.
Every time I come here, I am mildly entertained by the creatures that walk through the door. Don't get me wrong. 95% of the customers are perfectly normal. But there's always 1 or 2 people you can't stop watching. Last night happened to be an absolute mess of a cougar. I actually just edited myself from saying a lot of mean things, but you get the idea.
The beer selection is decent. They have a couple less than common brews, but none that really interest me. However, they tend to have a lot of cheap beer specials that screams college bar on Thursday and Friday nights.
Food is decent. I'll get food if I happen to go, but I won't go to Just Jakes just because I'm craving the food. I usually get the vodka sauce pie. They used to serve more bar pie type pizza. It had a lot of vodka sauce which I liked. Now it's more a pan pizza. Very crunchy edges. A little thickness on the dough compared to the old bar pie. Fair amount of cheese, but lacking sauce. Quesadillas are packed with cheese. Buffalo shrimp has a good buffalo sauce flavor.
A couple last notes: Outside area is great when it's warm out. Fenced in but still good open air. TVs always showing sports. I was able to watch Rangers games when they were on. Always appreciated.
Solid sports bar. Great wings, decent drink prices. We had a group of 6 of us and the server kept the pitchers coming.
We were there on trivia night, we didn't play but it seemed like everyone was having fun. The dude doing trivia was really boring though. He wasn't really selling the "this is a fun activity" thing too well. Just asked questions in a monotone manner. People seemed to enjoy themselves so I guess that's cool.
......WHO IS JUST JAKE? AND WHY IS IT JUST HIM??
**would have given them zero stars but yelp won't let me hehe. More like just jerk.
This is my first Yelp review and most of my following reviews will probably be good ones but I just HAD to post my terrible experience (or LACK of experience) here at "Just Jakes" first...this is based on customer service because I wouldn't know if their drinks/food are just as crappy.
My two friends and I were meeting a bigger group of people who were already inside this pretentious-for-no-reason bar, when the man checking ID's gave me a strange look when I handed over my TEXAS drivers license (I moved here a few months ago, SOOOOO SORRY I DON'T HAVE A JERSEY ID JUST YET....) I am of the legal drinking age, mind you. He obviously thought it was fake and it's not my fault that I might look like I'm 16 (the Asian girl curse) but anyhow I proceeded to pull out my SOCIAL SECURITY CARD with my full name that matches my REAL license, and he shook his head and turned me away.
In all of my 21.5 years of living...never have I ever been turned away at a bar even when I was 16 using a fake ID. Seriously.
Rude and ridiculous. Never coming back again.
It wasn't that busy when I went but definitely had potential to be a great place. The staff was friendly and the drinks were decent prices. They had an outdoor patio that is great when the weather was nice. It rained slightly when we arrived but the table had umbrellas so we were shaded. Â The only complaint I had was that the yager bombs that we ordered we very small.
Review Source:I had a private event at Just Jake's last month and I was so happy with the service that I decided to share this. Anyone who is looking to have a private event in Montclair, should look into having it at Just Jake's. Their back room is a great size, I had about 35 guests. The catered food is really good, at a good price, and you can have your own music if you would like to, and whatever is going on in the bar area won't interfere with your party. Yet if people want to stay and listen to the band after your event, they can conveniently do so!
I had ordered a lot more food than I needed and Patty, the manager in charge of private events, told me that it might be too much food for the number of people I was having. Where do you get such honesty these days?! She also helped me figure out how many champagne bottles I was going to need for a toast I wanted to have, always keeping everything within my budget.
I had asked for some tables arranged in such a way there would still be enough standing areas, and the day of, they were perfectly arranged. The service was excellent. We had Iris, one of the quickest, smartest waitresses I've ever had, who constantly had a smile on her face and was super friendly and helpful whenever something was needed. She patiently brought drinks to my guests from the bar so that nobody had to leave the room.
It's also important to mention that I had great communication with the staff, before, during and after the party. They always made me feel welcomed, and as if they wanted to cater to whatever I had in mind. If I ever need to have another event, I will most certainly have it at Just Jake's and I would recommend it to a friend.
Music was great, but the drinks were either expensive or the waitress stiffed us. 3 Makers Mark on the rocks, 3 pints of Guinness, and 3 two dollar bud lights came to 81.00. We didn't ask for the check but the waitress dropped it off anyway, and instead of an itemized check, it was just a blank sheet with 81.00 written on it. After much questioning we decided to just give in and pay it, even though it seemed over priced by at least 20.00. A different waitress took the check presenter. Then our waitress came over and saw money on our table and exclaimed "oh...is this for me?" And took it.
I would have loved to see the itemized bill.
Came here last night for a semi-business meeting. I actually had to meet with Shannon who is the owner of the bar. Shannon is such a nice and down to earth bartender!
There is public parking behind this bar and we were lucky to find a spot. Â FYI...it's free after 7pm. Â Just Jake's is a pretty large restaurant. Â They have a nice outdoor seating area, as well as plenty of space inside. Â I couldn't help but notice all the tv's in this bar, especially since I was in a hurry to come inside and watch the Devils vs. Flyers game.
We made it in time for happy hour and Shannon made sure to let us know all the great specials they had going on. Â After ordering a blue moon, I ordered a buffalo chicken wrap with ranch dressing. Â I must say that the wrap was really good!!!
Just Jake's has trivia on Tuesday night's at 8pm...my friends and I participated in the trivia game and I soon realized that I suck at trivia =( Â The questions were pretty hard and there were some people at the bar that take this game very very seriously!
Overall, I had an awesome time here (and not just because the Devils won). Â When I am in the area, I shall be stopping by once again.
Also, they have PINK LEMONADE MARGARITAS!!!! =)
Drink specials here are pretty amazing. 3 for $5 domestic beers? Pretty sweet. Of course they ran out of Yeungling and Rolling Rock fairly early and were only left with crappy Bud or Miller, but still, amazing deal!
Back room is much more quiet and really nice for a group of friends and when you want to have conversation. Service is also friendly.
If Friday rolls around and you haven't had the time to make those wonderful kickoff to your weekend plans, GO TO JUST JAKE'S! Every friday they have a live cover band and it's the perfect atmosphere to let loose, enjoy the music, and grab some drinks.
They also offer different drink specials throughout the week and have an outside patio thats nice for the warmer nights. I know I have definitely enjoyed some good times here especially with their $3.50 blue moons. They do have cheaper beer specials, but I'm just a blue moon fan!
This is a place that all of my friends agree to go to and we can usually get a decent group coming. I am not a fan of their 7 dollar cover for the band, but I have sneaked by a few times =)
This has been my go to bar for the last few years. Â So I think I can give an honest review. Â I usually go for happy hour. Â The beer price and selection are excellent. Â The waitresses are for the most part extremely friendly and attentive. Â The food is typical bar food but better than average. Â I wish they didn't charge cover on the weekends but I guess they have to pay for the band. Â The cover bands are not really my thing. Â They have several themed nights (Trivia on Tuesdays) that I've attended. Â They have a ton of tv's with basically every worthwhile game on. Â In the summer time, you can drink on the patio and eat food (something that Egan's prohibits for some reason). Â I prefer Jakes to Egan's because the beer selection/price is better and the bar dimensions are more spacious. Â All around, probably the best bar in Montclair.
Review Source:Good bar food, decent drink specials. Haven't been there for live music, which i hear is worth checking out, but I did go to watch a football game on a monday night, and it was packed. Loud, fun, and great atmosphere. People of all ages were really enjoying themselves. College kids, locals, and older crowds. Will be returning soon to see live music because if a game night was this much fun, I can only imagine how a night with a live band will be.
Review Source:My friends and I used to come here every week for trivia night. We had a consistent table, we knew the wait staff, etc. In the past year the place has really gone downhill while simultaneously trying to shed the dive bar image.
We had to stop going to trivia nights and the bar, in general, because the service was becoming increasingly terrible and slow. One week we waited over an hour and a half for a couple of sandwich, fries, and an appetizer. In the end, we did not have to pay because they "forgot" about the order. This happened the next week but we only waited an hour and the excuse was that it was busy. It is busy every Tuesday because it is trivia night. There is no surprise there. Have more wait staff or cooks on duty that night.
The food is hit or miss. Recently it has been all miss. Do not order the humus ever. It will make you retch in disgust. The sandwiches and burgers come out cold. It is one big nasty mess.
The redeeming attribute is that draft beers are cheap on Tuesdays but that is about it.
I don't get the hate and negativity .... Just Jake's is a bar, it suffices to say that it thrives as being one of the only really good bars in the Montclair area. Â It's not as dive-y as Tierney's, not as rude as Egan's.
It balances a good crowd most nights of the week, to be honest. Â I like the mix of young professionals, college kids, and old time boozers. Â The pool tables (albeit a bit uneven at times) are attractive, the patio provides a late-night ciggie + drink escape, live music is always a bonus.... and the daily specials are seriously amazing.
Best drink specials around, for sure. Â Tuesday nights = $2 drafts... and really, trivia isn't that bad, I have seen my fair share of individuals get involved who may have bitched about it a few weeks prior. Â Thursdays is now beer pong night, dollar miller lights, Fridays 3.50 Blue Moons 2.50 Coors Light, not to mention they have quite possibly the best extended happy hour around - I believe it literally goes for 6 hours during the day.
Sunday football here is PACKED!! Â Rowdy and fun as hell. Â I like.
The bar staff is definitely cool, no bartender takes their sweet time to get you a drink.. when it is slammed, they hustle and will get you a drink ASAP. Â Wait staff is always quite accommodating, most of them have been working at Jake's for years....which to me says a lot about a business, in a good way. Â The food isn't that bad - it's bar food, mostly... burgers & sandwiches are tasty and very reasonably priced.
All in all, it has a college type of feel, but I dig it. Â In maybe ten years.... not so much, but right now ... two thumbs up.
Crappy run down place. Has outdoor seating to eat your crappy food and cheap, watered down drinks. Im STILL confused at how Grey Goose on the rocks can taste like tap water rather than VODKA.
If you happen to stumble in on a Tuesday for bar trivia, be prepared to get drunk in silence because there is NO TALKING!!
I actually watched a bartender flip out on a guy who was at the bar and blurted out an answer in good humor. She acted like he just threw a baby off of a bridge. " Don't yell out answers!! People spend a lot of time writing them and participants spend eight weeks trying to win!!!! Blah blah blah," it was so ridiculous that it was like watching Danielle Staub from the NJ Housewives try to seem serious.
So the trivia kills the "good time" you're supposed to have at the bar. I mean, I could sit at home in silence on a Tuesday night with a whole bottle of vodka and it would be better than sitting in a room full of strangers and being awkwardly silent while you're trying to "have a good time." The weird little planet I came from had a social ideology that implied having a good time at a bar meant talking, laughing and mingling at the bar with a drink.
Food...well, think of an 18 year old kid learning how to cook. Nachos with cheeze whiz and chili, rubbery chicken fingers, bad burgers, raw french fries, some other frat house food and you have the complete menu.
Attire: think of the Superbad cast members in pajamas and you'll fit right in.
I've been coerced into going several times with anticipation that I would find a redeeming quality but definitely haven't found it yet. Even though it's only a Couple of blocks from my apartment, its not even worth the walk.
It's a fail on every level...
FINALLY made it inside this bar. Â I have been avoiding this bar every time they try to charge me a $7 cover. On this Friday night I managed to sneak on by (I won't let you in on my secrets, but I'll tell you it's possible....)
The cover is for "the band" which I've been told always plays middle school punk rock, alternative music. AKA: Sublime, GreenDay, Sum-41 etc.
They pull away the front tables and make room for dancing which is a plus. They have a special of $2 miller lites on Friday which was a steal.
All in all I was REALLY satisfied, I liked the crowd- diverse, the number of people-not too packed, but people there, the prices, and the music is fun for an every now & then feel.
I wish I had gone here more often, but that cover is a ball buster. I hear on Thursdays there's no cover, so I may be venturing on those nights. Cover starts after 9pm.
I'll start off by saying this was not my first experience at Just Jake's. Â I was there about 2 yrs ago for a work happy hour. Â I didn't have an overly good or bad experience the first time (that I can remember, after all- it was a very happy hour!). Â
However, Â most recently I was there was with my boyfriend. Â We weren't looking for much except for outdoor seating and some reasonably edible food and drinks. Â We sat in the outdoor area because it was a nice night and the inside area smelled like a dirty gym sock. Â And I'll state for the record that I was absolutely starving so almost anything thrown in front of me could have easily been considered delicious but oh how horribly wrong it all went:
First, my beer was served to me with a fly in it. It took about 20 minutes for a server to even come around so I could alert her to my situation. Then it took about another 20 minutes for her to come back with a new beer. My boyfriend also ordered another beer at that time and she later brought him the wrong beer. Â
The food took forever to come out (in all fairness, this feeling could have been amplified because I was really hungry but my boyfriend who wasn't as hungry did agree it was taking a long time for a salad and a burger to arrive). Â
Then my salad arrived- grilled chicken with balsamic dressing. Â Easy enough, right? Not so at Just Jake's! The chicken was gross- looked like it was definitely one of those bagged pre-cooked deals. Â The lettuce and dressing were warm and not because of the chicken. Â Even though I was starving, I couldn't bring myself to eat more than one bite. So instead, I ate my boyfriend's burger and he ate the wilted lettuce they put on the side of his entree. Â
No server came by during our entire meal for me to complain and perhaps order another entree. Â Instead she came by to clean up our table when she was sure we were done and finally asked how we liked everything. Â I told her how awful my salad was and that I didn't eat any of it (which was clear). Â She made a sad face and turned to who I can only assume was a manager behind her and said "she didn't like her salad." Â The manager tried to say the lettuce was warm because of the chicken- it wasn't, I've had chicken salads before. Â I told her I didn't even touch it and that instead I actually ended up eating my boyfriend's burger. She apologized and walked away.
Naturally, we assumed this meant she would be comping the salad as an apology for the disgusting entree they tried to pass off as a grilled chicken salad. Â But to our surprise, when the server dropped off our check, they had taken off a measly 10% as their way of saying "sorry for serving you crap."
Needless to say, I would not return there for a meal or a beer. Â If you like wasting your money, this is the place for you.
Just Jake's is a rare find; a great bar where the bartender remembers your name and favorite drink, and a good spot for food, with burgers and wraps that never disappoint. The TVs that they have above the bars and adjoining walls help you get your local sports fix while you're eating or enjoying a drink.
Trivia night is always a fun event on Tuesdays and a great outing with friends. You never feel that you're overspending at Jake's and you might commonly wonder how you can arrange to spend more of your evenings there.
I always see Jake's and never go inside, but I was intrigued so I made the quick decision to stay here for the night-- and I'm not quite sure how I feel about it.
I didn't mind paying the 8 dollar cover fee for promise of good music. I also didn't mind when the guy at the front forced my company to remove his hood and leave his bag with him ( one guy always ruins it for the rest of us), but I was annoyed about how poorly the whole "show" thing gets set up. More on that later.
Newcastle on tap is always welcoming. I didn't find the food menu there very memorable or appetizing, and after changing my mind 3 or 4 times, I settled on the crab cakes. Company ordered a grilled salmon salad with balsamic vinaigrette.
Took a decent amount of time to come out, but no biggie. However, my worries about the crab cake were affirmed. They were wack as hell.
Moist, ok. But where, o where did the flavor go? I was super bummed. Even with the "chipotle" mayo, the cake could not be saved. Â I pushed it around with my fork for ten minutes and threw in the towel. My friend's salmon was also very blandly seasoned. Very disappointing.
Our waitress was a gem though, no complaints about her. After the plates were removed, we continued to drink our beer as the male staff rumbled through and ordered every one out of the middle, because the show was starting soon. I was never a fan of this concept, because it interrupts everyone's evenings and conversations. It makes more sense to just leave the space open, but not my restaurant.
The dudes were rude and annoying, hovering over you and glaring until you get up. -100.
Lastly, the band that played was cute. Can't remember the name now, but they only did covers while I was there. Was it 8 bucks worth? Sure!
Would I come here again? Probably not.
We found Just Jake's thorough http://Restaurant.com a while back. Â I have to admit the place surprised me. When you arrive you enter the bar and must walk through the bar to get to the dining room. So I guess I was expecting your standard bar fare
But entering the dining room is like entering another world. The dining area is to the rear of the establishment and is pretty much completely isolated from the bar itself. While some sound form the bar gets through, it is at a level that is tolerable and even dismissible. One can easily carry on a conversation sans raised voices.
The food here is outstanding. I have tried a variety of dishes now and have yet to be served a bad meal. Their strip steak is excellent!
The wait staff is friendly , attentive and fast and the prices moderate.
They lost a star because they recently withdrew from the http://restaurant.com program and for us, removed the incentive to make the 30-40 minute drive to get there but when I'm in the area I definitely stop by.
Over the past year this has become pretty much my favorite place in town. Good food, good beer, good prices, great staff. I now somehow end up here once a week to unwind after work and have a few drinks. I still don't like it after 11 pm, when the bar fills up and bands come rolling in but, who am I kidding, I rarely stay out that late anyway.
