It's all about the food here at Khan's (a.k.a. Westchester Grocery).
Take any preconceptions you have about curb appeal, interior aesthetics, and presentation and kick 'em to the curb. Khan's focuses all of their efforts into delivering authentic dishes that please the palate.
As the options change daily without a underlying schedule, one must be open to exploring new foods.
And lets not forget the prices! I don't know of too many places in the area where you can get a hefty (think Chipotle-sized proportions) falafel sandwich for $4.
You certainly won't be convinced of the greatness of Khan's until you take your first bite. But give it a whirl. You won't be disappointed!
So this place is interesting...firstly, we drove right past it because we didn't see that it even said "Khan's" on the outside of the building (we still don't know if it actually says Khan anywhere on the outside). Additionally, Khan's is also a grocery store and doesn't look like a restaurant so of course we drove right past it at first. It's a bit of a strange set up but they do have a couple of tables to sit at if you'd like but we noticed a lot of locals coming in for takeout which is probably better. Most of the food is kept cafeteria style on hot trays but there are some "cook to order" dishes such as Chicken tikka masala. We ordered that plus a veggie korma and veggie curry. Overall...
-Samosa's were good and not overly greasy
-Rice was good with lots of flavor
-Prices are more than reasonable (my 2 dish plate with rice was only $6.99)
-Garlic Naan is sold separately and was very good. It might be one of the better naan's I've ever had as it had lots more flavor and bits of (what looked like) onion and garlic throughout
-Curry was spicy but good
-Korma was not what I expected and less than average
-Tikka masala was average
-FYI they have a restroom for customers
I don't doubt that this is one of the best Indian food options in the area - the appetizers and sides were very good, but a little disappointed in the actual entrees. which makes it just "a-ok" in my book when compared to other Indian restaurants.
I am Indian. To say I am particular about the cuisine would be a vast understatement. This "hole in the wall" has some great food. I did take out but their Korma and Seekh Kebabs are great. I grew up In Delhi, and perhaps its just nostalgia' but no-one I can remember does a korma (certainly for miles near Westchester) - a emblematic Delhi Muslim dish anything close to these guys
Review Source:This is my absolute favorite Indian spot in all of Westchester. If I could have it everyday, I probably would. It's really easy to miss this place. I went up and down the same road for a while on my first visit--it's a very unassuming little place. I think the only thing that would catch anyone's eyes at night would be the small 'OPEN' sign that hangs on their window. This isn't a restaurant. Don't take your date here. Think "deli-style"/convenience store.
Initially, I tried their kebabs and samosas and I've definitely had better in the city, but screw that, what you want to order are the saucy dishes. They are amazing. I'm talking about their daal, chicken curry, chicken tikka masala, and kadhi pakora, and so on. Absolutely, perfectly spiced. They do change up the dishes everyday though, as in they do not have a set menu. When I asked for daal one day, the woman behind the counter told me that what they offer daily depends on the chef.
Whenever I go there, I buy two dishes (one meat and one veg), and 2 naans (which I highly recommend for mopping up the sauces). And everything ends up only costing around $15. Talk about dirt cheap, since you can pay around that much for one entree at a restaurant. I share with my mother, and we still have enough leftover for seconds the next day. They taste even better then.
They also sell various halal meat by the pound, if that's your thing. What I love is that they also offer an assortment of Indian grocery staples, so if you need spices, ghee, pre-made mixes, desserts and so on, you can find a lot of things there.
I wouldn't hesitate on trying this place out. Highly recommended.
Great little hole-in-the-wall takeout place cleverly disguised as a run-down convenience store. ;o) Very inexpensive - a 20-spot spent here goes a looooooong way! The chana masala (chickpeas) is very good, as are their eggplant and samosas. In fact, all the vegetarian dishes are particularly good. Just make sure you like a little heat -- some dishes tend to lean toward very spicy!
Review Source:I took me two and a half years to find a decent Indian restaurant in Westchester that did not cost alot of money. this place is perfect for takeout. Their food is really good and it is so reasonably priced. I got the chicken tikka masala, chicken and lamb kebabs, naan, and samosas. All were really good except for the samosas. I think they were frozen, so I wouldnt get them again. The portions are pretty generous too. The place itself looks like a run down, abandoned convenience store, but the food is the best!
Review Source:The care that goes into the food at Khan's is unmatched by any low-end Indian eatery I've ever been to... and many high-end. Â The delicate, balanced flavor of every meat and vegetable dish they offer is brilliant. Â The only time I've ever been disappointed is during their lunch rush... but that's ok, because I know that lunch rush is what sustains them... and I usually go at off hours.
My usual order is a chicken dish, a vegetarian dish, a huge order of rice, a naan, and whatever the dessert of the day is, and for $25 C and I eat it for dinner for two days. Â Never again will I betray Khan's (and my tastebuds) with a trip to a crappy Indian take-out place!
