This was our first time dining at Kohan Japanese Restaurant. It has a menu for Korean food as well as sushi and Japanese cuisine. We decided on having the Love Boat which is a good deal in theory. The chicken was okay, the Kalbi was better, the tempura was nice, the california rolls were typical, and the miso soup were average. I do like how they gave us free hot tea, since they usually charge for hot tea. I thought that was a nice touch. We also had a spider roll which I thought was not bad. It tasted good not too crunchy not too soft. Â Overall the restaurant experience was okay. Â Since they cater more to a college group, their restaurant is not equipped to cater to couples who have babies.
I would go back someday to perhaps try their Korean dishes and more of their sushi rolls. I would not get the love boat again because not everything on there was great and worth the price.
Been here a couple of times, I really like the interior and the ambiance, it's pretty modern and really nicely kept. I don't think they get a lot of business though because every time I've been there, it was nearly empty with only maybe one or two other parties there :( It's also located in UIC's university village, so the prices may be too steep for most college kids :(
But as far as food, it's nice, clean, and tasty! :) I've never been disappointed with their food thus far. The owners are Korean, I believe, so they've incorporated a lot of Korean cuisine into the menu, which I can really appreciate. Their lunch buffet is also really great!
So we're locals to this sushi restaurant. We've ordered out and dined in. When dining in- they do have a happy hour special which makes their prices more pocket friendly.
The service was good when we were there. And when we ordered out, the timing was reasonable as well.
Their rolls are good. Nothing to write home about, but we definitely have frequented kohan on more than one occasion.
I came in expecting a sushi lunch buffet but had to discover they discontinued. No biggie. I went for the bento boxes that rounded to $7. It was pretty good. For the price the portions are doable, don't expect to get a mouth kicking salad and fruits when served. The salad didn't really have enough dressing for my taste.
Service changed again due to new waitresses. It was a clumsy experience. I stood by the door waiting a bit just to be seated. The place wasn't even that crowded...
i'd bet a winning lottery ticket the people that do not like this place are the types of people that 1) hate dolphins, 2) think sashimi, sushi, maki, and tofu are the same thing, and 3) cannot solve an easy sudoku puzzle...
ive been to many of "the best" sushi places in Chicago... the trendy Sunda, Japonais, Sushi Samba to name a few... as well as i have dared the "all you can eat sushi" deals which i would typically advise against as a seasoned sushi consumer... i've even explored many neighborhood notables (from lincoln park, to wicker park, to andersonville...) best sushi spots and Kohan is the ONLY sushi place in Chicago i frequent on sometimes a weekly basis (and i don't even live near here anymore)! this is one of few places the restaurant owner recognizes me and my boyfriend... even half of my family now
winning attributes: the food quality is SUPERB for starters. no matter what you get it is 99% likely to taste amazing. pricing is more than fair. parking is $2 in the garage. service is consistently friendly and relatively quick. HERE i converted my mother, an anti-raw fish/sushi-phobe, into a sushi lover.
GUIDEBOOK ON HOW TO DINE HERE: any one here that complains about price doesn't do sushi right... i come here weekly after many of my workouts and get basic maki rolls which are not only guilt-free but cheaper than getting a roll at whole foods and 1000x better. finding the right balance of satiation and compatible budgeting for all audiences will be easier with these guidelines:
hungry date on a tight budget: start with miso soup $1.50 and edamame $3, if starving like you have been fasting for 40 days in a desert get a basic maki roll or 2 which ranges from $5-9 (i recommend philedelphia, calamari tempura, or spicy tuna...) or even the veggie maki which is only $4-6... then pick one premium maki to SHARE which ranges from about $8-20... my fav on the economical side is the UIC roll, YH maki, or Osaka Flame each less than $13.... so for 2 people: 2 soups, edamame, 2 basic maki, 1 econ premium maki = roughly $25 before tax... plenty of food... you spend even less if you show your student id to get the discount
for the gluttons: if you are the type of person that feels perpetually hungry even after a few rolls of sushi and wind up going out for a fast food burger to seal the deal try getting the Bibimbap rice dish on the side which comes with miso soup... only $10 and enough to fill 2 people up without any help from any sushi
hopeless romantics: impress your date with a large house sake...i think it's less than $10... you won't get hungover like normal booze because it doesn't have the sulfates to wreak such havoc... or go on friday and get half price martinis at $5 and try the saketini (id stick with the sakes if you are like me and dont prefer sweet drinks)... the pricier sakes are wonderful if you wanna splurge... if you go for desserts they are not only delicious but beautifully crafted - sure to impress... or ya the premium W3! roll that comes to your table on fire is a show-stopper! (see the pics i posted)
sushi fanatics: there really isn't one premium maki i have tried that isnt AMAZING. i have never had a better volcano roll anywhere. many unique creative rolls not typical to a sushi menu like sunflower, mexico city, or ninja turtle are worth the venture. other faves i haven't already discussed include double dragon, maxwell street (this one is a mouthful!), or langosta loca will not dissappoint.
other veterans: does any else miss the many Chicago themed maki rolls as much as me?! the cubs v white sox rolls with the blue v black dressings. the bulls rolls. etc. ah i miss these! ps this is a good place to watch the bulls games...
Had dinner with my kids, yes my kids love sushi, and was referred here by one of my clients so I decided to give it a try. Thumbs up for being greeted immediately and seated quickly. The waitress was nice and the ambience of the restaurant was somewhat authentic.
Now we order a lot of food, so we started with the Edamame, Asparagus Beef Roll, and the Jalepeño Bomb. Those alone should get 5 stars. I also tried the mojito which was ok. Then we ordered the Yaki Soba, which was the thin rice noodles with chicken, California Roll, Boston Roll, Longostino Loco, and the UIC roll, and it was just ok... the presentation was cool but flavorwise not impressed.
I was slightly disappointed due to the fact I love sushi, and I'm always looking for a new place to go. It honestly wasn't bad and I'll probably go back but its nothing to make me fall over for.
Just another average sushi place with good appetizers n decently priced drinks.
I had the lunch buffet. I paid the extra $6 (a total of $13.95) to include the All-You-Can-Eat maki. Here's a quick run-down (before I dive in deeper and do a more substantive review) - choices were small, food was lukewarm, limited maki choices (with too much rice - couldn't really taste the sushi inside).
The only redeeming factor about this place is the service - the waitress and waiter were prompt, polite, and attentive.
Now the details...
Negative:
- only 8 choices (udon yaki, veggie fried rice, friend dumpling, chicken teriyaki, bulgogi, fried chicken cutlet, kimchi, egg casserole, pineapple + orange slices).
- you get sick of the selection after one round
- maki choices were limited...very very limited
- the maki's had WAY TOO MUCH rice
- the place was sort of dead
Positive:
- the service
I suppose at UIC there aren't that many great sushi or Korean BBQ choices. Despite their excellent service, Â I was sorely disappointed by Kohan. I'll probably never return - thus the lowly two-star rating. Sorry. =(
Awesome local sushi for typical sushi prices. Their special rolls are incredible and they always have daily specials.
We being the mad maki lovers we are have ordered several different things from there and never have been disappointed.
Favorite Maki:
Rainbow
Philly Crunch
UIC
Mango Maki
My and my friends went there for the sushi buffet. The sushi here is by far the WORST sushi I've ever had in my entire life. I couldn't tell wat kind of maki I as eating when the plate came. Everything tasted like a sour blob of rice. Waste of time and money. And the Korean food was bad too. Spend your money elsewhere.
Review Source:So my bestfriend and I decided to get away from the husbands and go out for a night on the town, we started with dinner at Kohan. I'm glad we started here instead of ending our night on a flat note.

The 'private event' that got started as we ate dinner, Priceless.
According to our server, there was going to be a DJ and buffet set up for a 'private event' that evening, which explained all of the 20 somethings that were starting to show up (and stand in the corner near the entry) dressed in their Friday night nightclubs best. Â It got so loud and distracting that we ended dinner early and headed to our next stop. Â
Don't get me wrong, I love people watching, but this was no fun (pc). Â
Kohan, don't put so much sauce on your Sushi rolls, I couldn't taste the fish.
I won't be back.
Service is NON EXISTENT.
rolls are overpriced and do not match the standard of other establishments in the area. We literally spent twice the time that we would have spent in here because the server would disappear into oblivion. For 12$ , I would like a roll with more than 5 pieces. However, the appetizer jalapeno bomb was yummy. Small, but good. I am not pleased that she got a 9$ tip from me due to this http://restaurant.com coupon.
Will never return.
I had the lunch buffet with sushi + hot dishes (korean and japanese) several times. The tempura isn't the freshest (especially if you come after 12:30pm) and the hot dishes are mediocre.
Thankfully, their maki rolls are delish! You get quite a decent selection of your basic maki. I would trade as many of Sushi Para's or House of Sushi's specialty rolls for a few of these any day. They make the sushi roll-by-roll, meticulously. I have to sporadically pinch myself to be sure that I am, in fact, at a sushi buffet. And for the price of $13.95, I can't complain.
My favs are the shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, and spicy scallop. I'm a major stickler for good sushi rice and this place has it down. The rice is fluffy, soft, chewy amazingness! It's too bad they don't offer an all-you-can-eat during dinner as well. One of the better quality sushi buffets I've been too!
The buffet is decent, their rolls are better. The Korean food is not that great. The service is excellent. My wife did not like the soup she ordered so they took it back and remade it three times until she was satisfied. She wasn't too happy but I thought they were dealing with the situation pretty well.
The restaurant is alright, however, I rather go somewhere else for sushi and Korean food.
I last came here a few years back and couldn't remember my experience; it wasn't good, it wasn't bad. I only remembered that the place was totally empty besides from me and my date (this is usually a BAD sign).
When a Groupon came out for this place, I figure I give them another chance since they are close by. Worst Groupon purchase ever! I wouldn't come back even if the food was free! Â We ordered:
Tuna Tataki: did not taste fresh. I want raw fish, even when seared, to taste fresh.
UIC roll: okay, nothing to write home about. It is battered in tempura then deep-fried. Tastes like the rolls from the all-you-can-eat sushi places.
Volcano roll: the description said that it would be filled with crab, but it was filled with IMITATION crab and topped with cooked salmon. We were expecting raw salmon since it is a sushi roll.
Spider roll: this one was the best of the 3 rolls, but you can get this at any sushi restaurant.
Dolsot Bi Bim Bap (with beef and kimchi): there was literally 2 slices of beef. The beef seem to taste good, but there wasn't much to taste. The kim chi was good. We basically paid $13 for rice and kim chi. EPIC FAILure!
The water glasses smelled like grease.
The service was slow since there was only 1 waitor for the whole restaurant. The waitor was very quiet and my husband didn't even realize that he was speaking to us when he came around. The bill was automatically billed for 18% tip for all Groupon users, which was not listed as one of the terms when buying the Groupon. I usually give a 20% tip for good service, but I do not like it to be an automatic type of deal.
I will not be back. Served me bad food once, shame on you! I came back a second time due to Groupon, shame on me!
Honestly, the bulgogi is OKAY, but every other Korean place I've been to in the past has been better. The proportions are smaller than most places as well, although this is the first time I had bulgogi and didn't have a food baby, so that's not necessarily horrible, but it's overpriced considering the portions are smaller.
The food deserves more of a 2.5, but we had a very nice server, so I'll give them a full 3.
I lived down the street from Kohan's and would always come by after work with friends. They are very accommodating to large parties and the staff is great! Nice area to just chill :)
Would usually have the UIC roll and the jalepeno bomb.. which was bomb :) My friends would usually get the sushi boat and split it.. seems like everything is on the boat.
Came with a http://restaurant.com coupon with my guy and sister for lunch. I'm between 2-3 stars, but will give them 2 overall because of the food and service.
We were tempted to just go for the buffet, but we already gave him the certificate. We asked if we can use it on there and he said no. He said we can use it on anything, but the buffet.
Spider Maki - Meh, was ok.
Y H Maki - This was very good and had a bit of kick to it. YUM!
Love Boat - Â This according to the site and menu!
Juicy Chicken Teriyaki - Was quite dry
Succulent Korean BBQ ribs (Kalbi) - These were pretty good.
California Roll - This had a cool effect when eating. Not cold like Dominick's, but cool.
Crispy Tempura Combo of Shrimps and Vegetables - I've had better.
Mouth-watering Gyoza - I actually like these. They were like deep fried
Assortment of fresh fruits - Assorment NO - Just watermelon that didn't seem to be in season. I didn't eat any though.
2 Miso Soups - Wouldn't know because we never got any!
2 Steamed Rice - Rice was good, but we had to ask him for them.
We also got 2 teas and a coke.
Server seemed to try and be attentive, but he didn't seem to really know the menu well.
Why the two stars! Well, it's quite expensive. Food is only so-so. Also, there is a love boat for lunch and was $10 cheaper, but he charged me the dinner one. We didn't get any miso soup. We had to ask him for the rice.
I think they need to lower their prices. I will consider coming back to try out their lunch buffet.
This is one of those places that you walk out of....kicking yourself........
wishing you had bought more Groupons.
:sigh:
This place serves up quite some delicious sushi! I tried the UIC Roll (5 huge, chipmunk cheek pieces) and a Original Volcano Roll (8 large pieces). It was really difficult for me to narrow it down to these rolls as all the premium maki rolls on their menu were innovative and tempting. The Original Volcano was so yummy with the melted mozzarella on top of the roll. I'm salivating as I write this. My husband had the chicken teriyaki and was impressed with this dish.
I wasn't too impressed with the lack of Korean dishes on the menu. In fact, there is only one. Korean Short Ribs. It made me miss San Soo Gab San. I won't be trying the Korean stuff here. Â
In summary, SOLID SUSHI.
If i could give zero stars i would. Terrible service (i would go as far to say server did not want to be there), subpar drinks (my margarita was room temp served in a martini glass) and food is that far from authentic.
Food came out one at a time. Enough said. When we complained, the response was "as soon as food is ready, i'll bring it out". Food being singular. Our dishes literally came out 5 min after one another.
You can listen to me or not. I wont be coming back here.
This place is cool if you're feeling like Asian food or if you really don't know what you want and are craving Asian food. Â And maybe for drinks. Â
But if you know what you want and you know what you like - I'd go elsewhere for your specific cravings as it is a fusion and on the pricier side for what you get. Â I went for the buffet lunch and didn't feel I got my money's worth...grrr. Â But I'm glad they are in the neighborhood...makes it look better...
We came around 2pm, so the whole place was practically to ourselves. There were 3 different people waiting on us, including the owner. This added a nice touch to the experience.
We ordered 10 rolls for 5 people, thinking that it would be just barely enough. But we had a hard time finishing it all! Some of the rolls are bigger than you'd expect. It would be a good idea to ask the staff how big they are before ordering.
We got the usual tuna, spicy tuna, salmon, unagi, etc. and then also got a spider roll, spicy scallop, and a white fish I cannot remember the name of. Just my luck, the white fish I-cannnot-remember-the-name-of was hands down all our favorite. The latter three rolls all had a great sauce and the perfect amount of spiciness.
Also, if you go in the summer time for lunch, the prices are really cheap. We got all this for about $50. Definitely worth it, especially when comparing to other sushi places in the city.
Dol. Sot. Bi. Bim. Bap. Â Five words anyone eating at Kohan should know. Â And, Kohan has some of the most delicious I've had...and, I've been to a lot of Korean restaurants (and have a lot of Korean friends). Â Also equally delicious (but a bit more expensive) is the Kalbi (Korean BBQ short ribs). Â Sure, it's pricey, and you don't get as much banchan as many other Korean places. Â However, the difference is the quality of the beef, its marinade, and the owner's homemade kim chi. Â Yes, you got that right, she makes her own kim chi on site. Â And, the marinade is a family secret.
Oh, oh, one other thing you have to try is the Fuji Volcano. Â It's a specialty sushi creation, and I order it every time I go there. Â It is qite delicious.
IMHO, I think many of the lower starred reviews on Kohan aren't fair, or are based on odd expectations. Â To those who've given three stars or less because of the "food", let's go together, and I will personally see to it that you enjoy what we order. Â
I have to admit, though, it is kinda pricey. Â Be prepared to spend a little cash....but, know this, it is NOT hamburgers or spicy wings. Â This is very good Korean food on the South Side. Â Wanna go with me next time?
Sushi here is fresh and delicious. Â Size of rolls are decent. Â My one fit is that some of the sauces that they put on, have a little bit more of a Korean flavoring than a Japanese flavoring. Â Meaning, you can taste the Korean hot sauce, and not the Japenese hot sauce. Â If i wanted Korean seasoning, I'd go to a Korean place. Â This is sushi folks!!!!
But the decor is modern, spacious and an Asian vibe. Â There is a Japanense steak grill to one side, seating at a sushi bar, and regular table seating throughout the restaurant. Â
the rolls we have had for take out were Awesome roll (not so awesome. Kinda boring, i might add); Red Dragon with tuna and shrimp tempura. This was really good, sashimi tuna nice and fresh; Double Dragon roll with soft shell crab and soy bean wrapper .This was a nice change of using the regular seawood wrapper, and crab was nice and juicy.; Caterpiller roll was a regular caterpiller roll in terms of same ingrediants, but the avocado was fresh and the roll itself was larger than most places.
I'd recommend this place to try, esp if you are partying it up in the area. Â Great for groups. Â Will go back to try their $12.99 all you can eat lunch special. Â Times are hard, must find deals
My first time at Kohan! I just picked up lunch from here today. The inside is pretty cool, and very modern. They have decorative sticks hanging from the ceiling(the best way to describe it).
I found the sushi to be good, but the unfriendly hostess really made it not worth the 30 minute wait. Mind you, I had raw sushi, and not another sole was in the place!
I will probably go back and try their lunch buffet. I saw a sign for the buffet saying M-F $11.95.My check was about $57.00 for sushi for 2.
I love that they have an outdoor patio, and will try it before the first freeze, I promise!!!
$5 (full-sized) martinis on Friday nights!? Um, yes. Twice.
I tried the Citrus Explosion (need some help with the 'tini nicknames, but whatever...it's got alcohol), and the Kohan Cosmo. Both very sweet, but packed an adequate punch. I'd stick with citrus...
For $5, no complaints from this wannabe weekend lush!
*spicy tuna for $6 was also A-OK, but really we came for the booze, outdoor patio and to avoid Junior's next door.
Hear that Junior's? By avoiding your dumb $5 cover, I got myself a pretty martini on a patio minus the douchebaggery. ha!
Don't waste your money at this place!! I was realy thinking this was going to be a good place based on the indoor decor and advertising outside. Instead, its a money trap that takes advantage of poor UIC students (even though I am not one) I feel bad for the ones that are and go here.
Where do I begin? Others who rated this place recently are right on the money, too pricey, poor quality for the price, and the service is just ok. The owner kept staring at us (who was the host) and kept pacing back and forth between his computer at the front and the front window, tracking how much money and customers he was getting. It made me feel very uncomfortable.
The food is not even average, and I tried 3 different rolls California roll, tempura shrimp roll, and the spicy roll. the only roll that was somewhat good was the tempura roll - and for the portion and price it was not worth it.
Go to NIU Japanese Fusion next to AMC River East - you get more than your money's worth, the service is outstanding, and you will feel that you got value for your money!
I have eaten a lot of sushi.... and hands down Kohan is on the lower end of the good tasting sushi list.
The sushi is too expensive for what you get. Many times the fish isn't fresh at all and it seems like just a waste.
The service is slow. Â I would not suggest this place if you want to eat good tasting sushi.
I've been here twice for their lunch buffett and probably wouldn't come back for it. Â Although it's only $12 or so, it doesn't seem even worth that. Â The maki rolls are very limited in variety, maybe like 4-6 kinds of rolls, each very basic and very very small full of rice. Â When they put the 3 rolls I ordered in front of me, I thought it was only 1 roll... Â I'm a big sushi eater and was very disappointed, perhaps their non-buffett items are better.
The buffet itself isn't impressing, only a handful of items. Â Taste-wise, it was ok. Â One good thing was the great service. Â Waiters/Waitresses were very attentive and timely.
I used to have a 4-star opinion on this place during my first two or three visits, but have to demote it to three stars after my last take out experience.
I live in the neighborhood so Kohan's was an easy choice. Â My takeout order was EXPENSIVE and the fish was not as fresh as it normally is. Â I found the super white a little grisly, the hamachi was fishy as well as the tako sashimi. Â I think the only thing that was really good was the UIC Roll and the Unagi maki. Â Everything else was just...OK.
I think I have to switch to another restaurant. Â I get nervous about mediocre sushi.
Meh. Â
My fellow yelper Vivian Y invited Mr Man and I over for takeout and Wii. Â Of course we accepted in a heartbeat! Â She had an awesome $50 gift certificate for Kohan, so we decided to eat our sushi-loving hearts out! Â
I dunno. Â Maybe we ordered really expensive stuff? Â Well, OK, super-white tuna is market price. Â But still! Â For 4 people we ordered 4 rolls, a tempura appetizer and maybe 10 orders of sashimi (2 pcs per order) and it was $90+ even AFTER the $50 gift certificate? Â I feel like that was excessive. Â I wasn't overly impressed with anything either. Â I thought the rolls were small to just average sized. Â The sashimi was just ok. Â Maybe I am measuring the sashimi against higher-end sushi places, but HELLO Lawrence Fish Market is a STEAL and the quality is IMPECCABLE. Â
All that, and I was still kinda hungry. Â
As far as takeout sushi goes, I suppose it is fine. Â I would order it if I lived around University Village and I really wanted some sushi but didn't want to stray too far from home!
I went here with my fiance for their lunch buffet. Â It was completely utterly disappointing. Â The selection was dismal at best. Â We got a couple of things to try cooked - all were mediocre. Â Tempura at the buffet? Â Forget it, there were only tempura bits.
Sushi was made to order - but service was super slow at the time so we only got one order in for 2 minuscule makis. Â The biggest sin of all wasn't the lack of selection, subpar food, or even the slow service, but our server lost our order for subsequent makis and didn't even bother checking in on us throughout the entire hour we were there. Â We waited and waited to get someone to check on our order for us but our server was nowhere to be found.
At the end of the lunch hour, both of us left hungry and extremely disappointed. Â We paid full price but only got 2 makis for lunch and crummy luke warm food that tasted like yesterday's leftovers. Â The manager offered us free ice cream to make up for the bungled service. Â Sorry, ice cream doesn't heal the broken heart I got from paying for a sushi lunch buffet and not getting sushi. Â I don't think I'll ever come back - EVAR.
Great, inexpensive lunch buffet. Â Good location, especially for students looking for a quick, cheap lunch.
Service wasn't anything to write home about, but it wasn't the worst I've ever had. Â During one visit we had a problem with one of our waiters (he charged two of my friends for the dinner specials instead of lunch when it was around noon... so they were overcharged each like $7) but that's the worst that's happened.
We went here for lunch. Â They had a 11.95 lunch buffet which included rolls. Â Not bad. Â The stellar items are the chicken wings and ton-katsu (or chicken?) strips. Â The rolls were decent, but they were more on the rice side. Â Compared to their other lunch offerings, this was the sensible choice. Â I'll definitely try it out again.
Tip: Â Get tap water. Â Our unsweetened iced teas were $2.50 a pop.
Excellent atmosphere, great food, great service and lotsa hotties.
I definitely like this joint.
I went to the grand opening event (I think they changed ownership because now they added Korean bbq to the place) and we had a blast. Â The korean BBQ (kalbi) they have here is fantastic - 23 stars. Â The sushi on the other hand is alright but not the reason I'd go for.
By the way, I did not know hot asian girls in Chicago existed until I came to Kohan. Â Most places are crawling with trixies and girls that like to call themselves BBW's in Chicago. Â There were several hotties here when I went and they were friendly and not stuck-up.
So yeah there's everything I want in a restaurant here. Â It would be a fantastic place to have a party. Â Great food, service, atmosphere and patrons. Â I'll make the trek out to here once in awhile, too bad I don't live closer.
I talked with the owner lady too, she was really nice.
What more can I ask for?
not worth the price
I was really hoping that this would be a welcome new addition to the usual UIC restaurant fare, but I probably won't be making a return visit.
rainbow rolls were okay, but my companion's salmon sashimi looked suspiciously like the dyed, farm-raised stuff. Â Oddly, mine looked and tasted better. Rather unexpected, considering it's coming from the same kitchen. Â The sashimi didn't come on rice, which we found peculiar. come on, rice is so cheap.
the dining room was also freeezing cold.
overall: unless you're in a reallly big group, go to Tatsu instead.
**UPDATE***
Went here for lunch and was so pleased, I'm raising them a star. They now offer a great lunch buffet, mostly Korean. They also offer an extensive selection of Korean dishes. I think Kohan is great for lunch or dinner regardless of their University village location. In fact, I wish it was near my house!
***END OF UPDATE****
I visited Kohan after a less than stellar experience at Morgan's. Duuuuude! Hi-five. Anyway, the difference between Morgan's and Kohan was like night and day. I loved it, especially considering the limited sushi options in the area. We sat at the sushi bar. Their menu is really extensive. We had tempura (basic) and a couple of rolls. Also, cold sake which was served artfully. I had been there for lunch a while back when they first opened, and was not impressed. But they seem to really have come in to their own, and the place had a really nice vibe. Oh yes, those worried about parking in the area should just go ahead and park in the garage one block west of Halsted. It's only $2.00 for a couple of hours.
We ate dinner at Kohan the other night and weren't expecting alot but the sushi was surprisingly fresh and well prepared. We ordered 5 makis and a tempura udon and everything was great. The service was quick and helpful and the place was clean.
Like most reviews say, they need to work on their pricing a little. The makis and nigiri are typically priced but their fashion rolls are about $2-3 more than expected.
Overall, Kohan is worth a look if you are in the area and craving sushi but you can find the same throughout Chicago.
Wandered across this place in the midst of a sushi craving and sat outside for a fairly nice meal. Overall, the prices are a little over the reach of the quality, but there were a few items that were exceptional for being a small place in the UIC Village. I usually hit sushi pieces, but had a couple maki rolls as well (the Red Dragon and a crunchy shrimp-something-or-other). Both were great...
If you're in the area, worth a look for a laid back sushi trip... but hurry before it gets cold and grab a seat outside!
