I went here on a Monday night to have beers and catch up with a friend. At first glance it seemed promising. Nice patio, friendly bar tender, extensive bar menu & beer selection.
We ordered our beer and then took a table outside. (FYI the one star is for the tasty beer). The bar tender told us a server would be out in a moment to take our order. That moment was about twenty minutes and the server was the bar tender. Not a big deal since my friend and I were chatting. I ordered a veggie burger with side salad and my friend got the beet salad and an order of garlic fries. Â When our food arrived I was skeptical. The "salad" was a pile of wilted and rotting greens- nothing else. The "burger" was falling apart and looked questionable. It was one of the more revolting things I've had the displeasure of consuming. I've been a vegetarian for almost 25 years so I've had my fair share of crappy vegetarian food but this was one of the top ten worsts. It was basically plain tofu with some rice, and mushrooms and a sad piece of mild cheddar. NO flavor, mushy, falling apart. My friend fared a little better but still had to dig through her salad to find the few beets buried at the bottom of her dish.
I had hoped Kupros would be a place to return to but with its hodge-podge menu, slow service, annoying country music, and basic lack of cohesion I won't be back.
ONE star for the wine, ONE star for the food & coffee and ZERO stars for the service.
It seems like a lot of Yelp reviews for this place start out with "I wanted to like this place..." Guess I should have read the yelp reviews BEFORE I went.
So, I wanted to like this place but the food was misrepresented on the menu, it also wasn't tasty and the service was atrocious. 3 for $10, hell yeah I'll take that deal! My companion and I ordered the duck confit fries with tarragon and garlic, mixed green salad and wild boar crostini.
Duck confit fries - the image conjured up by this description is a decadent mound of fries tossed with tarragon and garlic topped with shredded of luscious duck leg. NO NO, it was a plate of fries with green specks (not tarragon). We asked the waitress where the duck confit was, was it left off? "No, that's our take on duck confit." Uhh, I guess they are using the word "confit" in lieu of "fried." What they mean is duck fat fried French fries, say THAT on your menu.
Mixed green salad: a wet wad of limp greens, the shining star and the only thing I picked off the salad were sweet, fresh cucumbers.
Wild boat crostini: Good enough. Not good enough to save the meal.
We ended our meal with cappuccinos. You can't mess those up right? You can have your own take on those, kupros, right? WRONG. What came were coffee cups filled with two ounces of bitter espresso and thin thin layer of foam. It barely filled half the cup. As we peered down into our almost empty cups, we asked the waitress if these were in fact the cappuccinos we ordered, her response, "oh, that's our take on a cappuccino."
Well, OUR take on you Kupros is that we wish you'd live up to your potential, have some managerial presence, train your staff and get a new menu writer to actually represent your food correctly, oh while your at it, chef, look up "duck confit" in a Food Lover's Companion, the answer may shock you.
I came here for dinner, and I had a great time. It wasn't packed but it was busy for a Friday evening. The different floors and outdoor areas help break up the customers, I hate when places feel all congested. It was a little uncomfortable walking in as there was no host and we had to wait to get the attention of a bartender.
I had the Berry and Brandy Sangria, it was the special that night, and super delicious . . in fact I had a few! I ordered the Bistro Chicken Sandwich . . fried, recommended by our super cute, very attentive waitress.. Sure 'nough, It was fricken amazing!!! Bacon was perfectly proportioned and crispy, beer battered fried chicken was mouthwatering, bread was soft, veggies were crisp. The boyfriend had the burger medium rare, and said it was perfect! He's a chef dude and quick to tell me when food isn't cooked properly. Fries were seasoned deliciously, and I liked the presentation . . After fillin up our tummies and having some dranks, we left feeling pretty good! Our bill was about $55, which I think is pretty darn reasonable for two people.
Must try their Blackberry Ketchup the Chef's make there.
Would prob give this 3.5 if possible. Had the Burger and salmon. Salmon was very tasty but a little small of a portion for the price. Burger had great flavor but the bun to meat ratio was off (too much bun). Atmosphere is definitely the best part of this place!! Check out the rooms upstairs!
Review Source:My food was yuck, I believe the sauce with my muscles had burned garlic, it was very bitter. The fried pickles were too big and turned soggy, severed with tarter sauce? Not impressed. Our lavender/cucumber drink was not refreshing it was actually very soar. Pretty sure we won't be returning and not a recommendation I will pass along.
Review Source:Had a good dinner there on Sunday. I ordered the veggie burger my boyfriend ordered the Kupro burger. Â All in all a good meal I'm giving it 3 stars because nothing really stood out about it. The burgers come alone so if you want fries or salad you have to order them separately. The down fall of this is with the two of us the table was full. Â So if you go with a group I don't know where dishes would be put.
Review Source:This was by far the WORST brunch experience I have ever had! Â My friends and I, a party of 9, came to have brunch on Sunday. Â The menu looked great and my boyfriend recommended it. Â Bottomless mimosas were $12 so that was good BUT it took forever for them to refill and when they finally realized that 9 people could easily finish a pitcher our breakfast was over.
Now on to the food! Â SUCKED! Â I ordered chicken and waffles ,cold syrup, cold chicken and cold waffle. Â It tasted like it had sat out for about 10 minutes. Â Chicken sausage was disgusting! Â My friend order the omelet and it came out wrong so she sent it back, literally 8 minutes later (after we all finished) they came back to say that her food would be up in 2 minutes. Â She told them to forget it and to please take it off of the bill (that didn't happen.) Â The eggs Benedict looked good but I was told that the eggs were not over easy and the sauce was cold. Â So disappointing.
Service - the worst service I have ever had at brunch. Â Server was rude and rarely came back. Â I thought she may have been busy but when I went to the restroom I counted 5 other tables besides us, and we were the only large party. Â Plus she didn't take off the messed up order and included a $40 tip. Â Which I'm not too upset about since we were a party of 9 but because she was so rude and the food was so horrible I had a hard time understanding her 18% gratuity.
My advice pass up on Kupros... so many better places in Sacramento to chose from. Â Overpriced food and terrible service!! What a disappointment!
I've been here several times, but I haven't really eaten a full meal here so I can't comment on that.
First of all, they have a $5 special for a shot of Jameson and a glass of Bud Light? High Life? I can't quite remember, but one of those beers you drink for purpose, not pleasure. I don't know when exactly they do this, but so far I've been very lucky because this has been the special almost every time I've been in here. I don't know if it's because the will of the gods is in my favor or because they run it often.
The beer selection is pretty good. There's always a couple interesting looking ones I've never tried before.
I've had the 3 appetizers for $10 deal before and nothing has really stood out at all, but it's a great deal and there are more healthy options than your typical bar food. The service has always been great, the bartenders seem fairly knowledgeable.
This is one of those places that I always seem to end up, but I'm not really sure why. I never really pick it, I don't even know anyone who's that crazy about it, yet I always find myself here every couple months or so. I guess the ambiance is pretty cool and the upstairs is really cool, especially the second story patio.
It's not my favorite place, but I'm definitely not opposed to it. It's worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood and need a drink.
After a long boring day of Jury Duty, I began to walk. Â No particular destination in mind, just much needed walk...that usually leads me to a much needed glass of wine! Â I remembered Kupros always has that 3 for $10 sign out, and though I've seen it on many occasions, I fail to go in. Â So my walk turned into a mile and half power-walk with small plates in mind!
The location rests in a old Sacramento house, seating on the porch, seating in the bar area and upstairs. Â Very quaint. Â I settled on the front porch with my book, a glass of vino and proceed to order Brussels, goat cheese and grape crostini and the poutine: All for me!
My food followed shortly after and yes I dove in! Â Very excited by all the different flavors and tastes. Â Crostini was average and the smallest dish. Â The poutine was tasty but needed a lil more cheese. Â And the Brussels, these were not the soggy nasty ones Rudy would not eat on an episode of the Cosbys! Â These were a delight!
Service was great! Â My wine kept coming! Â I was very satisfied and plan on returning in the near future. 3 for $10 is more than reasonable and a great way to get a variety! Â I was please with my last minute date with myself! :) Â Cheers!
Hmmmm, sounds like the kitchen at Kupros leaves a lot to be desired, but luckily for me, the beer is what I am interested in.
I don't know how I missed a place like Kupros back in its first six months of business, given that I was in Sacramento a couple of times after its opening. But somehow I did, and it first came up on my radar on a return visit, when a friend who comes here often suggested it as a meeting place.
A group of us came here on a Saturday evening, around 9. By then, the dinner crowd had pretty much cleared out so the bar area was relatively empty... by no means a bad thing. It ended up filling up a bit later, which meant the wait for drinks was a bit longer, since apparently only two bartenders were on duty, but the crowd was still a reasonable size.
As for the beers? Amazing. The selection is top-notch, and I don't just mean the standard collection of domestic and imports, but literally a dozen beers I had never even heard of, all from unique and interesting microbreweries. So if beer is your thing, this is the place to go.
The ambiance was also quite alright, and the floor plan is very open and warm. There was self-service water at the back of the bar as well, for those who consume as much water as I do. We were told we could sit upstairs on the balcony, downstairs inside, or out on the porch... since it was a bit cold, we sat inside, but I can only imagine how wonderful this place is on summer nights...
The adorable waitress and splendid atmosphere can't quite save the day for Kupros. My GF's meal was too salty and mine was too bland. I like the concept and yet, we were probably there the wrong night of the week. Although having the place to our own was uniquely fun, I suppose there's even more fun to be had when they have a crowd on the weekends. Even still, I will proceed with caution at this place. Will give them one more try, and bump up the star rating if there's improvement, but for now, it's a sold 3.25 stars for Kupros. Improve your food, Kupros. A good restaurant begins int the kitchen. You're too good otherwise to let this business pass on without a real try.
Review Source:I really wanted to like Kupros. Le sigh. I've been there twice - once for a drink on a weeknight and last weekend for brunch. It's a really cool setup: a big porch, cozy booths, stained glass above the bar. The beer selection was just alright. The mimosas were fine. The service was pretty bad. I grabbed a seat at a table outside (self seating) and waited for my friend while the server walked by me 3 or 4 times in 10 minutes without bringing a menu or offering to take a drink order. So, I bailed on that section and got a seat at the bar where I had to wait for another 10 minutes for the bartender to take my order. I had an omelet and it had absolutely no flavor. Maybe I came at weird times and ordered the wrong thing, but I was really disappointed.
Review Source:Stopped by for beers and a little bit of food last night. It was a quiet night, with only a few other people in the restaurant.
The inside is gorgeous and the location is great. The bartender and our waitress were both attentive and cool. We sat in a booth near the bar and it was cozy and comfortable. I could have hung out there all night but we had other plans.
Extensive, reasonably priced beer list. I'd never even heard of most of them, and that's just what they had on tap. I didn't have any of them, but their specialty cocktails look great.
I didn't want a whole huge meal, so I just ordered the poutine and an order of fried pickles to share. The food came out fast and our waitress swung by a few times to make sure we were happy and our drinks were full.
I wasn't totally sure what to expect from the poutine, and I've never had "legit" poutine. The fries were really big and chunky, kind of like Nationwide's fries. Which made them easy enough to cut up and eat with a fork, but I kind of hoped they'd be crispier. Then again, that might be a no-no with poutine. The gravy and cheese were good, and I enjoyed the poutine over all. The fried pickles were wedges instead of medallions (first time I'd seen them served that way) but they were great. The breading was crispy and light like tempura. I will definitely order these next time I come back.
I was pleased with the food and service, loved the vibe, and was wowed by how beautiful it is inside and out. My two beers and two food items were less than $20. I will totally be back. I'd like to try some of their dinner specials and a few other things on the small plates menu. Plus, I've got a quite a beer list to work through.
The Mona Lisa of the grid...
...if you don't get this reference, peep http://urbandicationary.…, on second thought, it probably will say something more inappropriate that I am meaning. Essentially, it is good from afar, but up close, it's not so good. It's been a grid-ie for awhile, but I just never made it there, that mixed with a recent Sac Bee review made it something of a priority.
Res booked via their website, which was effortless, I can appreciate that. However, when I walked in on a Thursday night, it was apparent that res-ie was very unnecessary.
I love that establishment is an old Victorian home. It's something different, from most grid spots. However, touché Kupro's, it was a March evening, albeit an unusually hot one. The upstairs was becoming like a sweat lodge. No ventilation and plates of hot food, it became fairly humid within a ten minute span.
My drink was good; unfortunately I cannot remember the cute name of the drink. I'm sure I took a picture and captioned it with the correct name.
We thought we'd be adventurous and experience the true Kupro's with their tapas or small plates. We settled on the infamous poutine, the Mac and cheese "special," and the Brussels sprouts. Yes, they are baller-on-a-budget priced at 3 for $10, however we know why after our first attempt at these guys. The poutine was okay, I wouldn't go as far as good, but it was something that I've wanted to try. Who wouldn't be interested in French fries, brown gravy, and cheese, is a better question? They were okay, salty-dog heaven! As for the Mac and cheese special, which happened to be considered veggie...I was highly disappointed. Mac and cheese is definitely making a comeback, so any attempt at this dish, must be genuine. After some serious thought, I can finally give you a great description - noodles are similar to those of the used-to-be Fresh Choice, sauce is lacking in any flavor, and the "veggies" were of frozen proportions. Think cubed carrots, which immediately make me think of frozen veggie status. Their attempt was poor and for this to be considered the "special" makes it that more sad. The Brussels sprouts were decent as well, nothing to run home to Mom about, but made me feel healthier eating these veggies after the other two indulgences.
I really wanted to order the steak, but with it being in a mushroom-y sauce I had to pass. I almost convinced myself to do it, but then I thought better. It sounded so amazing, but instead I went with their Fried Chicken. Â Ehhh, it was over fried, but who doesn't love greasy chicken. The chicken was okay, it was not dry, bonus! However, the outside, was crispy but lacking...like all of the breading is floating in a pool of grease somewhere. The fries were good, but since we'd ordered the Poutine, it was starch overload. Another side note, they should also include in their description that this stuff is spiiii-caaay! We all know, by now (300+ reviews) that I am a wimp and the hint of spice makes me cringe. Thank goodness they gave me some ketchup to calm my burning lips!
I do pity the soles that work here, schlepping up two flights of stairs, on top of their regular serving duties. That being said, people, get on a step mill and get your act together if you're going to work here. Slow service might be a good descriptor or just negligent might be another term we could throw around. Mixed with the idea of taking away said tapas when there were still some in there, then asking if we were done when she was about two steps away from the table. Don't ask for ketchup, it will take awhile with your mouth burning and your water cup almost depleted. No, I guess we won't discuss dessert, because you've already placed the bill at my table, thank you though....
You're pretty from outside, so I'll just leave it that way...
Food was really good: grilled Caesar salad with shrimp - YUM! The veggie burger was good too. It was made in house on a rye roll with melted cheese all over it. The cocktails were good too - I tried the Kupros Seventy-Five. Beautifully presented and tasted nice too.
Service was so-so. Our server was friendly and personable but probably overwhelmed by our party size to be fair. Some entrees came out of the kitchen well behind other entrees that were ordered. Cancelled one entree because it was taking so long and it still was delivered to the table and then promptly taken away because we cancelled it. But then we were still charged for it. The restaurant ran out of some entrees on their main menu - not specials.
The ambiance of the restaurant is really nice. You can sit downstairs in the bar area or out on the deck to enjoy some happy hour time. Upstairs is a large dinning room with some separate private rooms and a great deck for dinning.
Overall good experience and will go back, but with a smaller party this time.
Let me just start by saying that their food is great. Â However, it's a little over priced for what you get which lowers my rating a bit. It's decor matches the quality of food and is a nice place to take a date. Â That is if you don't mind the loud bar crowd downstairs. Â We had good service, but I didn't feel that it represented the quality of food or the atmosphere. Â Our server wasn't familiar with the wines they served or what paired well. Â This is just something I'm a stickler for when you're a server and you have nice food/wine but don't know anything about it. Â Again....lowers my rating. Â Educate your staff
I will give that their bar is great and they have wonderful outside seating. Always a plus for spring time in downtown.
Much of the feedback on Kupro's emanates from its brunch and happy hour crowd. I consider the charming, two story townhouse to be perfectly suited for these kinds of events. I admired the stained glass above the bar, the gradual rockusness of the evening crowd on the patio, and the potential for sipping into sunsets on the upstairs deck.
But for dinner, don't expect much. I went because some lovely photos on the http://Sacbee.com food blog made me wonder how I'd missed such an establishment. I checked the menu online and found myself somewhat inspired by the options. Turns out, though, mixing shabby service with a confusing ambiance and a half-assed attempt at meeting the standards on the menu don't amount to much in the way of inspiration.
And those poor servers, trekking up and down the Victorian-style staircase bearing plates of gravy-laden French fries and unblanched, untendered Brussels sprouts from the three-for-$10 menu, trying so hard to pretend Kupro's is on the up-and-up.
Our third option from the 3-fer menu settled on... see, at this point I don't even remember. That's a bad sign.* Fried chicken was ordered, which came crispy and Southern. The ketchup took awhile (stairs...). There was the buffalo meatloaf and mashed potatoes, which had some bright features. And there was the beet salad and the ahi spring rolls.
Summary: a report of "crazy spice" on the chicken; a few slabs of beet, which were nice enough, layered on blood orange and feta; nothing-special meatloaf and some dry mashed potatoes; chewy ahi wrapped with lettuce and slathered in May Ploy sauce.
*It just came to me. We had the mac and cheese special (veggie), with peas and carrots. It had a distinct taste or two that appealed to the comfort food approach I assume Kupro's is out to seize. Unfortunately, the distinctions are akin to "Velveeta" and "Trader Joe's frozen veggies."
I concluded that dinner is just below "good." And for that, you and I can do better.
I don't know about this place.
Service: check, service is on point but you can tell there is a huge rift between the staff and the kitchen. Communication is a problem. Someone isn't getting his piece the pie back there. Trust me. I can just *feel it* from years of nasty restaurant work. The kitchen is not looking to make the servers' jobs any easier. Let's just say your special requests will be denied so do not even ask.
Drinks: check, look good, taste better, bartender's a lover not a hater. It's a good thing. You coming to drink? You'll be alright then. As long as you got some good money.
Ambience: double check! I love the remodel, the building is so cool and I love good remodels. This place is over the top. Much to love and look at in terms of interior design. (Not to shock anyone who has been to my house lately or anything, but this is one of my private passions.)
So we're all good until the food comes out.
Food: The food wasn't just bad, it was absolutely terrible, no jokes at all. It was like whoever cooked it had acid poured on their tongue or has been consistently stoned for the past ten years. It is actually a shock to me that someone let that pass the cook's line. I had a steak with goat cheese and spinach filling. Hard to fuck up right? Wrong. The meat was so tough I though it was a prank. And the goat cheese had no bite. I'm sure the spinach was fine but I can make that at home for less than twenty dollars.
MY POINT: I WANT TO LIKE THIS PLACE A LOT BUT FOOD IS BAD EVERY TIME.
I see the potential for this to be one of the best places to go out in Sac. The building is remarkable but the food is not even passing Go.
I think they should focus less on food and more on the drinking aspect. If not, they need to hire someone to narrow down the menu to 9-10 never-fail entrees for all the eclectic types of people this place attracts being right in the middle of the grid. This means fad dieters, Vegans, Vegetarians, and people that are a pain in the ass.
After that is done, the business should consider hiring/training a staff that is capable of putting dishes that are worth the money out. If you can't afford such a staff past ten, simply close at 10.
I have experienced much better. I can't give three stars because it is simply not OK to put out dissatisfying mediocre food for twenty dollars a plate. Unacceptable.
At the very least give the kitchen a raise so maybe they'll be more motivated to turn out some acceptable fare. This is my opinion.
I really enjoyed my experience here last Sunday with my friends. It was such a nice day out, so since it was my idea we try this spot and was the first one there, I decided sitting out in the patio would be best. Â Brunch was great; I ordered the cure burger w/ kimchee, sriracha, and a fried egg... So juicy and flavorful! Â It was a huge burger, so I cut it in half and after 2 bites, I was full. I did eventually finish one half after many bottomless mimosas. Â The BO was great, by the way. Â
A couple of my friends ordered the biscuits and gravy, green bean fries (yummy), and the huevos rancheros. Â I heard nothing, but good things, from the both of them. Â Service was friendly for the most part, but a tad slow. Â Overall, good experience and I'd love to come back.
They've got some nice and very creative items on the happy hour menu. Â The beer selection is decent. Â Back when I ate meat, I ordered the bone marrow but it was not done right. Â It was like drinking straight melted butter. Â The chef should've boiled it first then baked, not straight baking it. Â On the happy hour menu they have brussel sprouts, but again, it was straight baked or pan fried which made it's consistency akin to that of rubber. Â
I think this place can really succeed. Â It's got a unique enough approach to their cuisine. Â They just have to improve it.
Hypothesis: The kitchen staff was having a bad night... or, well hmm. Â I don't know what happened here tonight, but I can't give it four or five stars in good faith. Â First, we wanted to sit outside so we could keep an eye on our truck. Â It was a little chilly outside, so I asked if they could turn the heater on. Â I even tried to do it myself. Â However, no one was once able to get the heater on. Â It's annoying, but it's not the kind of thing that can ruin an evening. Â
Because my sister and I are both trying to watch our carb intakes, we decided to order the chicken skewers (w/ peanut sauce) and the Niman Ranch steak stuffed with goat cheese, tomatoes, and spinach. Â Neither of us wanted the potatoes, so we substituted the brussel sprouts with bacon.
Okay, so things are going fine, and the skewers come out. Â There were good, just a bit small for the price. Â I dunno. Â They weren't terrible. Â They just aren't going to knock anyone's socks off in the near-distant future.
Finally we received our steaks, which sounded amazing on the menu. Â But... by the time the food got to us, they were cold. Â The meat was a little too rare--and it made the rest of the ingredients seem cold and slimy. Â FYI, these were Niman Ranch steaks, so it's not like they're bad quality. Â I used to think it wasn't possible to screw up anything Niman Ranch. Â Wrong. Â Â
I think the next time I come here, I will have drinks and forget the food. Â Or maybe I will go a little earlier. Â I dunno... it just left a little something to be desired. Â
I would like to try this place again, before I pass final judgment. Â I think we just had bad timing.
Frat house? Because that's how the restaurant looks like lol. But once you get through those double doors, there's a huge wrap around bar right in front of you. I love how clean the place is, it kinda reminds me of a modern Cheers bar lol. Oh and the bartenders are always super friendly :)
We usually order off the 3/$10 menu when we come here. And sit on the outside patio/porch area with our beers. The Mac and Cheese is fantastic! The Grilled cheese sandwich is salty and crunchy and delish! Terragon Pomme Frites could be better. And the Wild Boar Bruschetta is by far my Favorite from here! Tender pork with greens on top of a crispy piece of bread- so darn good! The Kupros burger $11 is also good, love the focaccia bread! I've only been here for appetizers and drinks but I can't wait to dine here for dinner one of these days!
4 stars for being clean, good food for great price and always friendly service =)
Allday happy hour on Sunday's, lots of beers on tap and the Burger is delicious! We also did the 3 small plates for 10 bucks. Between splitting the small plates and the burger my husband and I were stuffed.
Service was pretty good and it wasn't too packed. I will def be back. I cant believe it has taken me so long to discover this place.
It's Beer Week, and Kupros had a beer dinner, so we decided to try it out. I went down with T and a friend, and we all ordered different things with a flight of beers from Dust Bowl. Suffice it to say the beers were great, but this review is about the food.
First courses: T's first course in the pre fixe menu was an ahi roll wrapped with cucumber. Â Fish was good, but small. Â We all shared the 3 for $10 appetizers (great idea!) with poutine, brussels on fire, and wild boar crostini. Â I wish the poutine were just more poutine-y. Â They're fries with gravy and cheese curds, no need to fancy it up. Â The curds weren't curdy, they just melted into a gooey mess with the gravy and had no cheesy undertones. Â The brussels were great, though I'm not sure why they were on fire. Â Of course they were served with bacon, and some nice shaved parmesan. Â The wild boar crostini was quite good although T complained the boar wasn't gamey enough. Â Good or a bad thing depending on your preference.
Second course: A salad came with the beer dinner, which was excellent. Â A nice array of tomatoes and cucumbers with a very aesthetic presentation of color gradient when you mixed in the red onions and kalamata olives.
Main course: Beer dinner came with venison meatloaf, we also ordered the wild buffalo meatloaf, and a veggie burger. Â The meatloaf tasted like meatloaf. Â Both were good, but indistinguishable from each other in both appearance and taste. Â I just have to trust our waitress knew which was which. Â They came with loaded twice baked potatoes that only resembled mashed potatoes with a few mix-ins...definitely not loaded. Â The veggie burger had a good patty made of barley, lentils, and jalapenos, but you'd have to be pretty talented to eat it like a burger (aka the patty crumbled everywhere). Â The bun was as thick as the patty, and all in all, the burger stood a good 6 inches tall. The beer cheese brought everything together nicely. Â Overall good, but definitely a fork and knife operation.
Dessert: Â Beer dinner dessert came with lava cake, ice cream, and nitrous treated peanut butter. Â Delicious all around.
Food was solid, no complaints. Â But nothing really stood out and said EAT ME. Â The decor and ambiance was definitely not what I was expecting from a self proclaimed gastropub, just a nice restaurant with an extensive bar. Â Given the extensive sampling of our menu, I don't feel a need to come back in a hurry. Â But it would definitely be enjoyable from time to time.
I'd like to start off by saying FUCK THIS PLACE.
I walked in on a Saturday morning to ask if the restaurant allowed dogs on their patio. There were three people in the restaurant: myself, the hostess/server, and some guy sitting at the bar.
The hostess/server (I'm not sure what this woman does there, other than chase off potential costumers) responded with, in a snarky tone, "That's fine but if she bites anyone, pees anywhere, or mauls anyone, you know you're responsible."
I replied with, "Yes, I know that. I own a dog. I know how it works."
Then she walked away without seeing if I had any other questions, needed to be seated, how many people might be in my party, or if I was interested in eating at that exact moment.
I will not be eating here.
I went here again recently because the menu looked really interesting. I wish I could love this place, but I was pretty disappointed again. The best thing were the fried pickles, but $5 for three wedges is a very disproportionate price. Sweet potato, duck confit (probably mean duck fat fried), and garlic fries were all under seasoned and not crispy at all. Poutine was bland. Mac and cheese was seemingly just macaroni pasta and melted cheese. The elk burger was ok, I tried half a wing of the brandy marinaded fried chicken which was good.
The beer selection is not the most extensive, but good. If the fried pickles were $2 or something, I would totally go here just for that and a few beers.
3 for $10 Bar Menu- It was a lot of food for the price.
Mac & Cheese- There wasn't enough cheese, but the bacon pieces made up for it a bit. The top is crispy.
Wild Boar Crostini- It had a lot of ruffage. (3 pieces)
Poutine- It was a dish that I overhyped in my head. It was ok.
Dessert
White Chocolate Guinness Pretzel/Chocolate Decadence Gelato (3 scoops for $6)
The Guinness pretzel was my favorite thing here. The chocolate decadence was a bit too sweet.
I love the two story building. It was originally built in 1910. Â Right when you walk in, you can see the beautiful stained glass above the bar. Instead of sitting downstairs though, my friend and I sat upstairs. There weren't any other diners. It was like we had the whole place to ourselves. I felt a little bad having our waiter walking up and down the stairs just for us though. So, while I can't say I recommend the food, I would recommend people to check out the bar.
Brunch was terrible. Â Cold food. Slow service. Super loud TV.
French Toast - It could have been good. Nice thick slices of bread artfully arranged on a long plate with black berries. If only it wasn't STONE COLD (and possibly a little raw on the inside).
Chicken fried skirt steak was good though. Â Thankfully at least this was hot when it got to the table. Not the most generous portion size though. To say the least.
Also they had pigs in blankets that day; otherwise known as sausage wrapped in pancakes. We asked if we could just order a stack of pancakes ordered on the side, but they couldn't accommodate us Given that the place was mostly empty I do not think it would have been too difficult to do.
Ambiance was terrible. The TV was on super loud blaring the game. Â I understand that people might want to watch the game but when the table furthest from the TV has to yell at each other then that's pretty bad. Â I could understand if it was later in the day when it may be more of a bar crowd, but not at brunch. Â They did turn it down a bit when we asked. Â But JUST a bit.
Overall half of the food was decent, but I just can't get over the stone cold french toast. Â And this was strike #2 since my friend had been there before and had to send cold food back that time. Â We were actually giving the place the benefit of the doubt and a 2nd try. Â Our mistake.
I will NEVER be back.
The service was very slow at first, no one really said anything too us (no oh sorry be right there we are slammed, we were just ignored). Â We were going to leave without ordering. Â I figured they had a rush or large table upstairs. Â The manager got to us before we left and was very nice about the whole thing. Â Cool, great, we decided to stay. Â
My wife got the "Above and Beyond Cobb Salad" It was a bowl of mixed greens with a handful of mushrooms, bell peppers and tomatoes on it (8 bucks). Â
1. Â The menu advertises that it comes with some named blue cheese (no cheese at all). Â
2. Â Pretty sure it was the $3 garden salad (w/ fresh veggies) that is on their menu. Â
3. Â I'm not a salad aficionado (because I'm not a rabbit) but I'd bet a shiny new nickel that 9 out of every 10 cobb salads in this country come with some mixture of avocado, eggs, bacon, etc.
4. Â It's frustratingly ironic because the name is ABOVE AND BEYOND, which implies taking something and going the next step, should call it BELOW AND NEARBY (I'm reminded of that skit on MadTv "Lowered Expectations")
Now I had to write a negative review about salad, of all things.
I dont even know where to start with the really, truly terrible service and food I received at Kupros.
I came in with my family on a Sunday afternoon around 1pm and there was NO ONE in the restaurant so we had our pick of tables. After looking over the brunch menu, I decided to order the "Above and Beyond" chef cobb salad with blue cheese. It says right on the menu that the cobb salad features some amazing blue cheese. about 20 minutes later I did NOT receive a cobb salad, nor any trace of blue cheese. What I received was a mixed green salad with bell peppers, mushrooms, ham, onions, and some light untraceable vinaigrette dressing. I asked the waitress upon receiving my salad if there was any dressing on it and where the blue cheese was. I then asked if I had been given the wrong salad because, like many people, I know what a cobb salad should be: chopped romaine or iceberg lettuce, blue cheese, bacon, tomatoes, onions, and a hard boiled egg.
Not only could she not explain whether or not I had been given a cobb salad, she suggested that instead I pick something else off of the menu and placed a new menu in front of me. She then went back in the kitchen to ask the "chef" what they could do. She returned and explained that they had run out of blue cheese the night before, so there was no blue cheese to put on my "Above and Beyond cobb salad with blue cheese".
I explained to her that I wanted a cobb salad and that what was sitting in front of me on my plate was not a cobb salad, blue cheese or not, and that I really would like a cobb salad. She told me that they could put bacon and an egg on the salad and bring me ranch dressing. I said fine because I didnt want to press the matter anymore. She came back about 20 minutes after that, after my entire party had already eaten their meals, with a mixed green salad tossed with bacon and served with a side of ranch. I never even received the egg for the salad which was promised to be "on its way".
I can forgive one bad meal out of the bunch, but the other meals that my family ate were described as underseasoned and disappointing.
All in all, I will never be back to Kupros and I would not recommend it. Terrible service, mediocre food, small portions.
I really wish I could give this place 0 stars. Never have I had such a disaster of an experience at a restaurant. We came to this restaurant on a Sunday brunch around 1 PM for my grandpa's birthday. My sister had made a reservation for our group of 8 for 1 PM, and requested that we be seated on the first floor since my 98 year old grandpa has a difficult time with stairs. When we arrived on time, they took us upstairs (no elevator and not what we requested), and they had given away our table to another group. They quickly scrounged up another table in a tiny little room where we were seated. They did not give us menus until I asked for them 10 minutes after being seated. They didn't bring any silverware until we asked for it when we got our meals.
Now, this experience really became a comedy of errors, with an emphasis on the errors and not so funny. I will just list all of the things that were awful because I can't even put them in chronological order
-They didn't have iced tea (I mean really, how hard is it to make?)
-They brought the wrong appetizer
-Omelet was luke warm at best when it was brought out
-The Challah french toast was actually just french toast with plain white bread slices
-The burger ordered medium-well was brought out rare, with the entire bun soggy so you couldn't even pick it up
-The side of toast was soggy
-The steak was Denny's style greasy
-The scrambled eggs came out as an egg pancake
-The biscuits and gravy wreaked of fish
-Maybe got one drink refill, and it was from the bus boy who was the most attentive of the bunch
The waitress was friendly, but she kept mentioning how frazzled she was and how crazy she felt. While I can understand that situation, it is her job and really everything went wrong that could've gone wrong. It also was fairly quiet, so I'm not really sure why she was so frazzled. My mom went to speak to the manager about how awful everything was and the manager was not there. The "head" waiter was very apologetic and took her phone number for the manager to call and apologize and he begged us to come back again. We still have not heard from the manager. They did comp all of the food, except for the two appetizers and the drinks. Unfortunately, we were not looking for a free meal, but rather a tasty meal to celebrate a birthday.
I'm not sure if this place is better for dinner, but I certainly will not waste any money learning that lesson.
I suppose that the 1 star I am giving this place is because the chairs were quite comfortable, which is great for how long we were sitting there.
