I always enjoyed this diner -- the food isn't good, and it's super greasy, but it's okay fare for a diner. Until this morning when I noticed that they were watching FOX NEWS. I asked them why are you watching this? The guy at the counter said, "Our boss says it has to be on." I told him nicely, "Then this is the last time I"ll be here." He said, "well, you're just one person."
Now you can decide! Do you want your eggs with right-wing ideology or not?
The staff is friendly, the place is clean, the food is good and not expensive. Â They also put out some free food for happy hour on Thursday or Friday (it's one of those days just not sure which). Â I'm not a foodie but if you are looking for an easy and fast food spot then you can't go wrong with Lake and Union.
Get the meatball sub, they only have it once in awhile on special but it's delicious.
This place is not a fancy club or restaurant,but...I liked it!! The drink prices were very reasonable for the area.Service was quick and efficient. Â I went to an open mic here last Monday. It was hosted by Chevy Debbie. She is one funny, dirty lady!!The crowd was very welcoming and I had a blast! Chevy Debbie hosts an open mic here the first Monday of the month. It is open to ALL entertainers-musicians,singers,poets and comics alike. See??? We ALL can get along!!
Review Source:This is your standard cafeteria for burgers, sandwiches, and gyros. Â I work around the corner, so it's one of the few affordable options in my corner of the West Loop.
The employees are very friendly and there's good service in that respect.
While there's nothing off the set menu that's mind blowing, it's consistent. Â On Thursday they have a Sirloin Steak Sandwich that is absolutely terrific.
Ok, first off. I work very close to this joint, so it's kinda a no-brainer to hit up in the winter. They have good sandwiches and whatnot for the day crowd. The place is basically split into two halves. there's a luncheteria greasy spoon side, and then there's this weird greek side that looks like well... i dunno, Greek. You'll have to check it out yourself to make your own assumptions. Oh, and they have peanuts in the bar, that's clutch.
We went in on a tuesday night after work and found out that every tuesday and thursday from 6-8ish they have lapdancers come in for $10 lapdances. Yep! that's right Yelpers. $10 lapdances. You haven't seen that since the blow-filled 80's era.
I will say that the dancers aren't quite pedigree, but hell, this joint is a place where construction workers and other blue collar workers drink after work. Waddya expect? Stop in for a funny evening before going out somewhere else. It's going to be a random night if you start it off at Lake & Union, that's for sure.
I go here from time to time because it's almost literally right around the corner from where I work.
As a greasy spoon lunch spot it's not bad. Â Your typical gyros, burgers, hot dogs, that sort of thing. Â Not awful but nothing really incredible.
As a bar, it leaves things to be desired. Â My old style was $3.50 which is kind of high for a bar of this caliber. Â I haven't been in there on a Tuesday or Thursday [and seen the events of these particular days like in Aise W's review] but I can see how this place would be like that. Â It wasn't even remotely busy on the Friday I was there and the people that were there were blue collar middle aged men. Â Also, the jukebox acts really wonky. Â I put in a bunch of requests and heard MAYBE one of them.
They do set out random free food from the kitchen which is a plus. Â If you're a 20 something looking for a fun night spot, run from this place and never look back. Â If you're middle aged, work construction, and like your bars empty and depressing with a shitty jukebox and potentially questionable events occurring, this is your place.
Update: Â Also, the bartender was pretty surly. Â It's what you'd expect at a place like this, though really.
"Who knew about this place and didn't tell anyone??? Not sure how they stay in business, as it is never busy when I am there, but it is fun to go to when you are hung over on a Saturday. (Closed on Sundays) Order your meal at the counter, find a seat and read the paper or watch tv. You will be called to pick up your meal, so don't forget the tray and utencils at the begiining of the counter. Expect lots of greese and a cure for your hangover, just in time to go back to sleep and get ready for Saturday night. Make sure you check out the all white 1940's style room on the East side of the building."
