It has been a while since I have been to Los Lupes with my husband since we have moved. Â But we were back over the weekend and the food was even better than it was the last time we went. Â My husband tried something new off the menu, a fajita bowl mixed with meat, seafood, and veggies. Â The cheese that melted in the sizzling bowl was amazing and my combo enchilada plate was just the right mix with the fajita bowl. Â
Definitely will be going back hopefully next time to try their brunch buffet! Â
P.S. Â They have great breakfast tacos that you can order and take out. Â When I used to live in Addison, I'd go there all the time. Â I think that they by far have the best breakfast tacos in the DFW metroplex (and they should since they've been around for 25-30 years).
Had a group business dinner here as the place we were originally going to had moved. Unfortunately this place was very disappointing. Starting with the good - the guacamole and Pina Coladas were very good. However the rest of the food was not fresh or good. Also it was very dirty with dust and cobwebs.
Review Source:After leaving Menas Tex Mex grill I'm loving thus place! Its my 2nd time here and I'm always impressed! The food is so good! They make a mean margarita and the beef chimichanga dinner is muy bueno! Great server!!! Btw u have to order the churro and ice cream for dessert its topped with warm chocolate sauce and a cherry!! FAB!
Review Source:Where to begin?
THE PROS:
1) There's a nice patio where you can sit outside during those nice breezy evenings in March/ April or October.
2) There's a mariachi band that plays music at your table if you tip
THAT'S IT! ... THE CONS:
1) I didn't know you had to pay a cover charge TO EAT DINNER on Saturday night after 10pm. Who cares about a DJ? Are WE a restaurant or a club? After you've paid your "cover charge", you can sit just about anywhere you find an open table. Our first table was extremely unbalanced... so we had to find another. Luckily, a family was getting up from a picnic table- which is where I wanted to sit anyway. Oh wait.... I also had to find menus because we didn't get those.
2) To the obnoxious drunk guy who threw up at the picnic table... TWICE.... Thanks! Great visual before I ate. I appreciate that.
3) To the kids (aged 3-7) who kept running around our tables ON SATURDAY NIGHT when they should have been in bed... you're awesome! Thanks for bumping me every time you ran by. You never know when I could have choked on my food and bumping into me could have helped prevent choking. They should hire a midget to hide in the bushes right below the patio. And every time the kids run around, he throws out an occasional broomstick and they trip. It's cruel but I think it will help to address the issue. (Of course I'm joking, but you have to acknowledge an obvious problem when there is one)
4) THE FOOD: Okay, my girlfriend HATES this restaurant called El Chico. I mean she hates it with a passion. Well she finally found a place that tops El Chico. The food was edible. Would I rush to go back? Yes.... if Taco Bell was the only other option and they're closed for business. The appetizer... we asked for chips and queso. They bring us a nice bowl of queso, but no chips. Oh wait.... silverware... didn't get those until I asked for them.
5) I'm not a huge fan of loud music at restaurants. So it was hard to enjoy my evening with my girlfriend with loud music.
6) Bonus... I loooooved the bronze statues of Mexican midgets on the patio ledge. They happen to catch my eye while I was eating. I was startled because I thought someone was going to commit suicide by jumping off the ledge. Good thing the kids were running around to prevent me from choking!
WRAPPING IT UP:
If someone tries to warn you about a place, sometimes it's best to take their advice and not go. My girlfriend and I were supposed to eat here about a year ago... but she went to jail for a traffic warrant while driving to meet me there. Needless to say, I ignored a major warning sign and had to find out the hard way.
THE ICING ON THE CAKE:
I went to review this place on Yelp only to find out there are other locations! LOL LOL LOL LOL
My wife and I met up with former coworkers at Los Lupes and we had a group of 10-12. The fact that they had enough seating for us is the only thing giving them the 2-star. Other then that, service was just about invisible. The night we were there, they weren't slammed, but maybe understaffed? The food was decent, but I don't think we'll be goin back.
Review Source:Nasty. Terrible.
Went in for lunch looking for great Mexican food, and I found the worst I have seen to date. Friends, I would have rather eaten at Taco Bell than this place.
I had the $6.50 lunch buffet, and that was a epic mistake. The food was bland, runny, dried out, and stale. The service was terrible. Even the chips and salsa were bad.
I dont like to leave bad reviews, but this place earned it fair and square. I will not be back.
Came here on a Sunday night for Latin Night. Based on the bad reviews, I wasn't planning on ordering drinks or food but that night, they had $1 margaritas so I was like whatever I will try one. Then, the bf was hungry so he ordered fajitas for both of us.
So here is my review:
Margarita - for a dollar (normal price $4.00), I think it was decent. I liked it but I have tasted better.
Fajitas - not so much...it was ok, I only ate 1 taco of fajitas. The bf ate the rest and he said it was ok. The food is really nothing to die for.
Service - it was slow, we sat at the bar and there was only one bartender and since it was Labor Day weekend, it was extremely busy, not sure why there was only one bartender.
Music - they had a live salsa band and they played all my favorite music! The band was the best part of the restaurant, they made my night!
Dance floor - Â Nice and clean, easy to dance in but it was small.
Overall, I really had a great time and ended up buying more margaritas. I think we spent about 26 bucks for the fajitas and a round of margaritas, which is not bad.
So if you are looking for a place to dance on a Sunday night and don't want to spend a lot of money, (not to mention, A lamir is next door and they also have Latin night on Sundays but they charge $10 cover), I highly recommend this place. :)
This is the only time I've ever given a 1 star review - it was that bad! We won't be back to this location - although it looks nicer than the Trinity Mills location, the food and service left a lot to be desired.
I'm usually pretty forgiving of bad service, but this was unacceptable. We sat on the patio for dinner and it was not even crowded (inside or out) yet we had horribly slow service. How often do margarita glasses and chip baskets sit empty for a good 10 minutes at Mexican restaurants? When we finally found our server and ordered refills it took a really long time to get another round of drinks or chips. I understand the bar *might* have been backed up (although unlikely), but we also had to ask for water  3 times - our food came before the water!
The fish tacos were bland and were missing the normal pairings such as cilantro, pico, cheese, etc. - it was just a slice of fish in a tortilla, that was it. Slow service with barely mediocre food, equals a no return.
There are too many great Mexican places in Dallas for this place to survive. If you're looking for something in the neighborhood keep going onto Taco Diner, Christina's, Gloria's, or heck, even On the Border - knock Los Lupes off your list of options.
I think I need to go to the doctor to get my taste buds checked. Â This was the most tasteless Mexican food ever. Â If I am ever forced to go to this place because of an invite, I may shoot myself. Â It was cheap... beer, chicken enchilada, and beef enchilada... $6.87. Â I guess you get what you pay for. Â Taco bell has more flavor. Â I thought for one second the salsa was good because it was spicy, then I realized the spice covered up the fact that this salsa gives Pace Picante sauce a bad name.
Review Source:Been to this restaurant several times, food is great, fun patio, horrible service. Our waiter had our group of 12 and a room of about 30 folks playing poker. Â There seemed to be a hiccup in service, so I went to take a look at the main dining room, thinking it must be busy. Â There were 6 people in the dining room. Â I asked for the manager and her response was that our food is coming out. Â They brought everything to us as ordered. Â Suddenly at 8:45 pm there are 4 servers that had never been seen. Â I doubt they just came on for their shift. Â This is clearly a management problem. Â Made me wonder exactly who was in charge, manager or staff.
Review Source:Great location. Â Good salsa and chips. Service was even pretty good (poor Jose even knew the joint sucks.) The rest? Â Not EVEN worth the dynamite it would take to blow the place up. Â The margarita I ordered was straight up sweet and sour. Â so i asked to have a shot added to it. Â When the drink came back it was 'stronger - with RUM! Â Are you kidding? Â The manager/bartender even told me it was 151. Â What an ass. Â Someone complains and he makes them pay for it with an even $h!tt!3r drink than before. i give 'em 6 months.
Review Source:NIGHTMARE!!!!! Â We have been here a few times and we never seem to be able to catch them on a good day, but after yesterday we will not return. First we went around 5:30 on a Sunday, sat in the bar because usually that is where the service is better.
we sat in a booth there was one other couple with there children in there and one guy at the bar, yet it took 10 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us. Â We ordered two draft beers, they were warm, so we switched to bottles, we noticed a pitcher of beer had been returned as well, and we hear the bartender realize the keg cooler was broken. We sat another good 20 minutes before our food order was taken, while listening to the man at the bar return his food for the third time because it was wrong.
Taco plate and fajitas, we finally get to order........we sat another 35 minutes waiting for our food, while the bartender keeps serving the couple with the children shots...ummm TABC anyone? getting hammered with your kids? who is driving you home? the 5 yr old? Then another couple comes in and the guy wants to watch something on TV so the bartender stands there changing channels for another 10 minutes..while we are still waiting for beer refills. FINALLY food! old beef in my tacos and my boyfriends fajitas was a plate of sizzling...although very tender steak on a bed of onions...wheres the peppers? lol
I will be glad when this closes and perhaps a better restaurant will open
Anyone for brunch?
Any place but here.
My friend and I visited 30 minutes after they opened for brunch and the selections were meager and disappointing. Cold fajita meat, dried shrimp and seafood (ceviche was yuck), tasteless enchiladas, terrible soups...30+ items of fail on your buffet! About the only redeeming qualities of the brunch: an omelet/pancake bar where I could fetch a fresh meal and endless mimosas/bloody marys...but I don't drink!
Even at this price point, it's not worth the disappointment. Based on this visit alone, I have no hope for the rest of your menu.
Pass!
Cheap and delicious. Â I have been here a few times after work, they have a decent happy hour with a house margarita that's pretty solid and a yummy "mexican mojito." Â Their salsa is fresh, guacamole is good, and I haven't ever spent more than $20 between drinks and dinner. Â Good old-school Tex-Mex with rice, refriend beans, and awesome cheese and onion enchiladas if you want the real deal greasy baked kind. Â Chicken tacos are a great choice here as well. Â Most of the time it's not very crowded, but it might be because the Addison location is pushed back from all the usual Belt-Line area restaurants, or the fact that I am there right at 5pm for the early bird special with my work buddies.
Review Source:On the Great Enchilada Quest of `11, I've wound up eating at a ton of places around where I live. Despite living in between two Los Lupes locations for almost 3 years now, I'd never been to either of them.
So I swung by here one night. It was after the peak dinner hours, but still plenty of time before close.
When I walked in, I noticed that the interior, while very large, could use some updating. There was a sign taped to the hostess stand with duct tape ("Please wait to be seated" or something to that effect). The booth in which I was seated had some issues... the table was very wobbly and the waitress 'fixed it' by shoving it up against the wall very forcefully. Which actually kind of worked, but I was afraid that if I leaned on it too hard, it would wobble again.
The menu is quite large and is very reasonably priced. The price is what gives this place 3 stars instead of 2. How much can one complain when the enchilada plate was under $6??
I got the basic cheese enchiladas (which are the only ones considered in the Great Enchilada Quest, really) and asked the waitress if it was topped with chile con carne or queso. I'm not a huge fan of con carne, and it tends to be the culprit of the upset stomach many-a-times after enchilada gorging.
She told me it was topped with chile con carne, and I asked if I could have queso instead. She didn't understand. She asked if I wanted carne on one enchilada and queso on the other? or both sauces on both enchiladas? I finally thought she got it and set about reading my book while munching on chips and salsa (both okay).
Unfortunately, my enchiladas weren't quite right. Both chile con carne AND queso topped the enchiladas, but I just ate it anyway. The waitress was very nice, but I felt that it might not be right even if I were to send it back.
Overall, the enchiladas were decent, but very greasy. The rice and beans were okay. But again... how can I complain too much when the meal was so damn cheap?
There were signs all over the place for their brunch (I was seated next to what is the Omlette station on the weekend), which I'd consider trying out.
I'd be back, but it's not on the top of my local Enchilada List.
Went there on a saturday for dinner.
The decor is most unusual. It looked like they're stuck in the 70s with the chairs and tables.
The service was mediocre. They forgot our queso. Â
Ordered their  chicken mole. The chicken was a bit bland. The sauce was alright. It was the first time i had mole so i couldn't compare. It wasn't impressive.
The prices were really affordable thus the extra star.
We had the pleasure of visiting this restaurant because the restaurant next door seemed really unappealing.
Terrible!!! Friends told us this was  great place to visit so we decided to meet up on Cinco De Mayo. What a mistake!!  The music was so loud I couldn't even hear the server who was yelling in my ear. After we moved inside and I received my drink (which was disgusting and warm) the booth we sat in was ripped and crooked. The table was so wobbly the I was afraid the drinks would spill.
After struggling to sip my drink (a mexican mojito) and my husbands hot beer we just threw down some money and bolted. We headed to Uncle Julio's were the drinks are good and the food is delicious. Los Lupes is one place we will NEVER go back to.
We showed up around 7:30pm on Friday night. We asked to be seated on the patio, which the hostess did. However, we then sat there for some 10 minutes without anyone acknowledging our presence despite wait staff walking by us and serving table literally all around us. We did eventually get chips and salsa, but no water or anything else.
We were debating the merits of leaving or flagging down someone when a waiter finally came over and asked if we had a server. The guy was actually very nice and promptly took and delivered our drinks. He took our order and delivered our food fairly quickly. Unfortunately, he was the nicest thing about dinner. I ordered the chicken and shrimp plate, which was really bland; the refried beans and rice were okay; the shrimp was so-so, but the chicken had absolutely no taste whatsoever.
My fiancee ordered a margarita which she said was one of the worst she'd had quite a while. My beers were good enough although they came in warm mugs.
Then the mariachis showed up and proceeded to play at the table next to us for the last 20 minutes or so that we were there. Being right next to our table they blew us out and it was all but impossible to have any kind of conversation.
This was our 3rd time at Los Lupes on Belt Line and will probably be our last. The first 2 times were okay, but neither the food nor the atmosphere were anything to write home about, although the service has always been very pleasant. My fiancee really doesn't want to go back again and I'm not too enamored with them. While not a horrible experience there are plenty of other Mexican restaurants with much better food and quality service.
While I've read about how low-brow or low-end the place has become (and I would have to concur with some of it), if you go for the Specialty dishes they have, you'd be surprised how good it can be. Â
I always get the 'lengua' (calf tongue) in a rich sauce and since it's tough to find in other places, this is my go-to spot for it. Â
Yes the decor is sub-par, yes the buffet is icky, but know it up front and you'll save a few bucks and enjoy a decent meal.
The fact that they have a lunch buffet REALLY made me interested and I really wanted to like this place. Sadly, their buffet was pretty bland. Just one type of rice, refried beans, chicken and beef enchiladas, one type of taco and some meat like dish.
Their enchiladas were OK but nothing more. The taco was just so-so.
I would have to say there are better options out there. We have been there twice now and the first time had horrible service. The waiter totally forgot about our table ... and they weren't even busy! We had to flag someone down who took over serving our table. The original waiter never came back or apologized or anything! That right there is enough to ruin a meal for me.
Once we got service, I ordered the steak quesadilla and it was yummy! Others at the table ordered the taco salad and they said it was really good!
The second time we went it was also pretty empty in there. They sat us next to a table of 8 and a booth of 3 were behind us. There was tons of room in the restaurant but they sat us there and it was soooo LOUD! I couldn't even enjoy my meal! The service was a little better. I tried the taco salad this time and it was okay. It was pretty bland but once I doctored it up with jalapenos and salsa it was do-able! However, I prefer my meal seasoned appropriately and ready to eat!
So, needless to say ... next time I will be headed over to Taco Bell for a beef meximelt! Now that's deliciousness in a tortilla!!!
Haven't been there since May of last year. Again, we had been so often, we really got to the point of...meh, not so great. But, tonight we decided to just stop by for happy hour, because we had always enjoyed a libation (or two or three?) in the bar area, with no intent tonight for a full meal.
Wow, the place was empty @ 1800, found a comfy booth in the bar , which is really quite a nice spot, and settled in with a draft beer and their El Jefe Margarita, (MY FAVE) our usuals. Service by Gilbert, the bartender, was perfunctorily ? He was there just because he had to be. Not rude, but not cheerful, friendly, enthusiastic, and welcoming. Didn't have to wait for a refill, but no warm and cozy feeling, encouraging one to "can't wait to come back." Â Come on Gilbert, give me a smile, a giggle, life is good, Don't Worry, Be Happy !!!
Drinks were good. I do like the El Jefe, just the right amount of kick and smooth flavor. Only ordered the Queso, which was also okay. Added the salsa and it turned out edible and dippable (is that a word?)
Al, my favorite bartender who is so awesome....where were you? Al always knew my drink, and always had it at the table almost immediately upon sitting down. Perhaps he has left because I haven't been there in a while? I'm sure that's the reason. We had such a wonderful relationship; guess he missed me and just moved on!!
Then the moment that startled us....a large whiff of BLEACH floated across the room. A staffer was mopping an adjoining room to the bar area, and the aroma of bleach overcame us. About that time our (sad and "didn't want to be there") bartender walked by and we inquired about this overwhelming smell. He looked around, went into the adjoining room, came out and said "he is mopping the floors and will be through soon" and .walked away. No apology, no "I'm sorry", nothing. He could have cared less.
We finished up our drinks, asked for our tabs, paid and got the heck out of Dodge! What a discouraging experience. How can a business expose their patrons to such an uncomfortable experience. Hey Guys, mop the floor after hours or before opening hours. The bleach smell permeated the bar area. YUK !!!
Sad to see this spot with so much potential become so below average. Be back soon? Probably not. Heavy, sad sigh cause I do love their Margs !! Al, please come back !!!
Let me preface this review by saying that Mrs. Bear's mom is a native of Puebla, Mexico, and her Mexican home-cooking is second to none, so I'm already jaded with respect to this cuisine. Â
We visited this location strictly for Saturday breakfast. Â We are always looking for good breakfast places, as there seem to be so few of them in our area, and most have been disappointing.
Our waiter was friendly and reasonably attentive, but definitely an ESL person, so we ended up communicating in Spanish about half the time. Â The coffee was hot and acceptable in flavor, with frequent refills. Â The chips and salsa were very good, no complaints - and I'm very fussy about both!
Our breakfast dishes were served promptly, and were pronounced excellent - I think Mom would have approved. Â Everything had a definite "homemade" quality and flavor. Â The borracho beans were the best I've tasted in Dallas (sorry, Pappasito's). Â We cleaned our plates.
In summary, I'm dismayed to read some of the unfavorable reviews from others who have dined here, but I can say without hesitation that this is one of those rarely-found places that seems to serve an excellent breakfast.
I'm having to "redo" this review, I had the location wrong. This is my -least favorite- Los Lupes. My first visit was in May, and my last visit was the beginning of Sept 2009.
I have been taken there once, and dragged there the second and final time.
The main menu food is ok, although the food quality (especially the prep) doesn't seem as good or come as close to the Trinity Mills location. If your not to picky, you may find there food decent enough.
Both times we also seemed to always be waiting for our waiter/waitress. Drinks were not kept filled at all, unless we sent out smoke signals, and there were never more than 2 other tables for our servers to attend too. And standing off by the chip warmer or computer area seems to be a hobby with some of the wait staff on both occasions.
I ordered a quesadilla that was on the daily special chalk board (as you enter) on the first vist, when I received it, it was fair, a little dry, and not near the best I have had.
When I received the bill it was full priced, when I asked I was informed it was after 5 (or 7?) pm. Funny I don't remember seeing a time period stipulation, (I mentioned this to the waitress, but let it go) but hey... maybe I missed it. But upon leaving, I noticed no note of this on the board or anywhere else! So I guess anyone else walking in was going to get caught in the same "daily special" trap since their board was still up and advertising these "specials" as I was leaving.
Shame on you belt line Los Lupes!
I also ordered my favorite, Fried Ice Cream. Normally (at my favorite Trinity Mills location) it is served on a hot metal fajita type plate with the cinnamony caramel sauce sizzling with (real) whip cream and a cherry on top. The aroma that invades the entire area it is being served in is absolutely wonderful and the ice cream does not melt too fast considering. The hot sweet caramel sauce with the cold mellow coconut rolled ice cream is a wonderful contrast.
But Not this time!
I smelled it before I saw it coming out to me with the sauce burning. Like burnt to the point that I would have gotten a blister if I touched the dark dark dangerously bubbling sugar. (For those that cook with sugar you know what I mean and how dangerous this is! I'm not exaggerating here ppl!)
I am amazed that they allow this or are not checking the food quality that comes out of the kitchen better... considering the liability.
On my second forced visit I was going to order just the fried ice cream thinking the last time was probably just a fluke, I mean how could sending a burnt entree out be a common thing for any restaurant right? But before our chips came out, someone two tables away was getting a fried ice cream delivered. It was the same gross burnt smoking sugar fiasco being delivered to their table. I just could not believe it!
I explained to my waitress what I wanted, and that I expected it NOT to be burnt, and that dangerous burning sugar was not correct even if they thought it was. I did get my fried ice cream, but with no caramel sauce, instead she brought me some honey to put on the hot plate. Really? Half the experience was that hot gooey caramel sauce.
Oh well, deprived of yet another wonderful culinary experience.
After waiting with hands in lap for 7 -10 minutes and hoping the waitress would notice that I was staring her down like my cats do to the invisible mass murderers in my house, we did finally receive our bill, paid it and left.
I won't be returning, and will stick to just to the Trinity Mills location that is less than 5 minutes from here.
I always have a piece of advice to everyone I know about Los Lupes, and it is this... GO TO THE TRINITY MILLS LOCAL!!! =)
Strange décor, loud noise, foul smells, bland food plus a bunch of kids running around equals "Please shut down Los Useless soon!!!"
Background-
When I first moved to the Addison area, this place stuck out at me like a sore thumb. Â Its outside decoration was corny with the multi-colored light bulbs and the weird scrap metal statues of Mexican men with funny mustaches and other odd things. Â After reading the reviews here, I had decided not to step foot in this place. Â However, the Mexican office rep in our apartment complex strongly recommended my wife (who hails from Mexico) and I try this place out. Â So we headed there for lunch and thus, ruined my Sunday.
Atmosphere-
After walking in you have to think twice to determine whether it's a restaurant or a Chuck E. Cheese style haunted house. Â The Halloween crap littered everywhere was out of place and tacky. Â The live mariachi band was really loud and obnoxious, but it seemed the rest of the guests enjoyed them, who by the way mostly consisted of large families. Lastly, the bathroom smelled horrible, but not as bad as the bar right in front of it. Â Oh, and my wife saw a used condom on the floor of the women's bathroom. Â How delictable.
Food-
Now all of that could've easily been overlooked had the food been decent, but it clearly wasn't. Â At all. Â I mean, the prices were very low, but at some places they would still deliver great food, e.g.Mia's, Herrera's.
They offered us the $11 Sunday Brunch Buffet and after taking a little tour of it, we passed. Â By the way, for the same price, you can have a buffet at Blue Mesa Grill on Wednesdays from 11am - 2pm. Â Far better than Los Useless.
The chips and salsa are probably the only good thing about Los Useless. Â The chips are crisp and kinda thick, and the salsa had fair consistency and just the right amount of spice. Â As for the main course, I ordered the $9 Carne Asada and she got the $5 Sour Cream Chicken Enchiladas. Â The beef was bland. Â Very bland. Â And the enchiladas... they're better at Panchos.
Conclusion-
We skipped dessert (naturally) and left extremely dissatisfied. Â Do not go. Â I don't know why anyone would like this place unless they had a bunch of kids and Chuck E. Cheese was closed. Â Just keep them away from the bathrooms.
I have been to Los Lupes twice. Â I was barfing within hours of both visits. Â They use very low grade ingredients and the service is an abomination. Â This is the Golden Corral of Mexican food joints. Â Other than being cheap and serving plenty, I cannot understand why hoards of people flock daily to this place. Â It is void of any quality that I can detect. Â Utterly crap-tabulous!
Review Source:I was driving by and noticed that the old Joe's Crab Shack had reopened as a mexican restaurant so I thought I'd give it a try.  When I walked in, I really liked the decor and was seated on the patio.  There were several hispanic people eating there and a mariachi band which I thought was a good sign.  The menu came and everything was so cheap.  Ordered top shelf margaritas.  For only $7 you got a 12oz glass with Don Julio anejo tequila, a great deal but when it came  it tasted more like water than a margarita.  We ordered tableside guacamole with was two big avocados and was easily the best thing we had.  The chips were greasy and the salsa was pretty good, with a nice bite to it, but I couldn't get over eating it from a styrofoam container- not very environmentally friendly.  We ordered chicken fajitas for two for only $14.  The chicken meat had good flavor to it but the beans didn't have much taste and the homemade tortillas were far below expectations.  My buddy sent back the corn tortillas to get them cooked more and they returned about the same condition we first had them. Â
If you are looking for cheap mexican food where you can get cheap drinks, I would recommend here. Â If you don't need the alcohol, Taco Bueno and Taco Bell are far better in food but won't have the nice atmosphere.
I eat breakfast here every Wednesday morning. They have the best breakfast tacos I've ever had. They're really good, HUGE, and cheap. I only order one, eat chips and salsa, and I end up leaving full while paying less than $4 (tip included).
The downside to this place is that if you come on the weekend for dinner you're probably going to end up waiting a while for a table. Other than that it's a nice little Mexican food joint.
Ok, so again...saved a draft a while back and just returning to Yelp online since the freakin' APP doesn't actually let you Post reviews - go figure!
I was actually looking forward to eating here. Â The quality of the meat and sides was very low and did not at all satisfy my urge for mexican food. Â Seasonings were poor and taste just was not great. Â
Anyhow, the margarita [El Jefe a.k.a. The Boss] was actually pretty good. Â The coolest was they had Heineken on tap. Â So aside from this, the chips 'n salsa were just okay. Â Perhaps I'll return for some food. Â
Oh yes, and don't go on a Sunday afternoon - SUPER DEAD! Â Like vacant.
Overall, NO BUENO
Oh my god! Â Another Mexican buffet? and it's not called Pancho's? Sweet! Â After many a times of suffering the aftermath of Pancho's I have moved on to Los Lupes. I've been to the Industrial location several times for breakfast and lunch and the Addison location seems to be just about the same except for the decor. The decor here is really nice.
My friend and I came here for the lunch buffet about 15 mins before they closed it off so we were thinking, "Yeah, we can take full advantage of a buffet in 15 mins." Everything they had on the buffet seemed really good and decent for a buffet. The chicken enchiladas topped off with their cheese sauce was awesome! Â Before they cleared away their buffet, they actually asked us if we wanted anything else. That was really considerate of them, but we were actually already full from drinking so much soda from their abnormally huge soda glasses.
I think the next time I come here I'm gonna take advantage of their happy hour. $1 beers and $1.50 margaritas on Fridays!
Los Lupes opened up right around the corner and I finally got over there to try it out last night. Â I was so looking forward to a good Mexican meal, since I hadn't been out to eat in a couple of weeks. Â My first impression was of course the decor, and I thought it was pretty neat. Â There's a fountain at the entrance and murals on the walls. Â The furniture it rustic and authentic looking. Â There are tvs spread throughout the place, and there are a few different areas for dining. Â
We were seated in the main room, right in front on the tortilla maker and directly behind the register/host area. Â Throughout our meal we had to listen to the tortilla girl socializing with the different staffers as they came to get their tortillas, and several times the staffers would reach over my head to the host area (for whatever purpose) and they would conversate right over over our table. Â Just a tad annoying. Â Our server came to the table about 10 minutes after we were sat, and took our drink order and queso request. Â He came back shortly after with our drinks and chips (which were excellent, but no queso came yet) and we asked for just another minute to look at the menu. Â He gave us about 15 minutes (which was about 12 too many) and we had to ask another staffer to hunt down our server so we could order. Â We finally ordered and then requested an order of queso again. Â About ten minutes later he passed by again, and we asked about the queso once more.. he said it was coming and brought it out a few minutes later. Â At that point our first round of chips were gone, and the challenge was on again to see how long it would take to get those. Â A few minutes later he brought some more chips, this batch was nothing like the first. Â I have never seen such greasy chips. Â Kind of disgusting, but the queso was decent. Â
Our food came and while my friend seemed pleased with her enchilada, my quesadillas were sopped in grease. Â The tortilla part wouldn't even stay attached because it was so slimy and weighed down. Â My stomach hurt after eating one. Â I mentioned it to the server, and his response went something like this "I don't make it, I just serve it." Â Wow, Los Lupes management- you must be proud of your staff. Â Let's just say I won't be back anytime soon.
Los Lupes is a locally owned chain of 6 or 7 stores, all of which are are situated outside of the North Dallas area.
I really had high hopes.
I really wanted to like this place.
But my high hopes were DASHED in a haze of cigarette smoke, SLIMED in a truckload of cheap ingredients, and HAMMERED in a fusillade of cheap beer.
The place was packed on a Friday night at 6:30. A great sign, or so I thought.
The owners have done a nice job redesigning the old Joe's Crab Shack.
However, the bar was packed with smokers, lured by the 99 cent happy hour Bud Lite from 5 to 7. And the ventilation system was not able to keep up with smell. The whole place smelled like the old Poor David's Pub (those of you who were there, understand).
We were seated promptly, and a decent Mariachi band started to jam. My hopes were still high when I saw the small station where a woman was cooking fresh tortillas.
The waitress was ultra efficient, and took our orders promptly. That's where things started to go down hill.
We ordered Tex Mex staples:
1) Bowl of Queso. A gooey light yellow mess of lukewarm Velveeta, with a couple of rotel tomatoes in it. Even doctoring with the very good salsa couldn't save it
2) Cheese and onion enchiladas with Chile con queso sauce - chewy under cooked enchiladas with almost no cheese, and covered in Wolf Brand canned chili. The Borracho beans that came with it were not bad.
3) Chicken enchiladas with sour cream sauce - passable chicken, with gooey bright yellowish white sour cream sauce. The re-fried beans tasted like canned.
4) Beef Fajitas - "Beef from a bag" precooked meat, guacamole from a bag, and not very fresh. Undercooked greasy onions.
Even the "home made" flour tortillas were no good.
The marriaccis played, the tea glasses were never left empty, the manager was working the room. It all seemed so good...until the food came.
Also, as were were eating, the legacy of cheap beer (and the patrons it attracts) started to rear it's ugly head. A loud drunk dude shouting over the music had to be told to shut up by the wait staff. The whole crowd actually looked more "Garland" than "Snotty North Dallas", which is fine, if the food is good.
But alas, the food is not good. It is, however CHEAP.
The concept of all-you-can -eat Mexican food can make you salivate or sick depending on where you plan to dine. Luckily Los Lupes will make your mouth water as the items available easily outweigh rivals like Poncho's.
It was odd to see the Joe's Crab Shack close on Beltline but when signs went up announcing the forthcoming Los Lupes, there was much rejoicing in my lunch crowd. Los Lupes serves a $5.99 stuff yourself lunch special, served cafeteria style. You will find the basics, including various tacos, enchiladas, and tamales, in addition to a tasty stew. Sure, none of this fare will rank at the top of your list but it is decent food that not disappoint.
Los Lupes is a full service restaurant as well. This location also has a full bar, happy hour specials and music on weekends. It is also enormous so finding a table, even during the busy Addison lunch hour has never been a problem.
Give it a try. You won't be sorry, although you'll may have to put off your visit to the gym until the next day because a full Los Lupes tummy, will stay that way for quite a while.
Los Lupes - I wanted to give you 4 stars, but I just can't do it. Maybe once your buffet opens I can bump you up.
I was really excited to check this place out after Glenn and Joe mentioned that they enjoyed the other locations and it was alright, but not as super awesome as I had hoped.
The decor was interesting - it was very rustic-like, but comfortable and I think the rustic look was working for them. I really liked their chips and salsa. The lunch buffet wasn't open yet (they were still in the process of putting the place together), but should be open this week. I ordered a combination plate so I could try out as many things as possible. The chicken and beef soft tacos were my favorite, the cheese enchilada was nothing to write home about, the sour cream was about the same as the cheese. The queso was terrible - don't even bother ordering it. Seriously.
I'll go back to this place again - because its ridiculously cheap and not nearly as terrible as I find El Fenix to be, but I guess I'm spoiled by places like Pappasitos and Uncle Julios (thus far I've only been wowed by overpriced mexican food), but I'm still on the hunt for cheap mexican thats equally delicious!!
