I am amazed by the service I get at this little known delicious restaurant. I have had my share of ho-hum places that think they have what it takes to be called a Mexican Resturant. I am not sorry to say this place is like a earthquake, it always rocks my world and my need for taste inexpensive taste bud turning food. OUTSTANDING !!!!!! Glad it is what it is.. Love the wait staff.. Never have to wait for anything.. Good Job...

I love Los Portales! The prices are great, and the atmosphere is friendly and warm. It isn't a fancy restaurant, but is like being in someone's home. The staff is very friendly, and will accommodate special requests. My favorite dish is the ceviche tostadas, it is the best in town. I get the mixed ceviche, fish and shrimp with lime, jalapenos, and avocado- it is WONDERFUL. You would pay twice as much for this at the fancier restaurants, and I doubt it would be as fresh.

I also like the tamales, enchiladas, chili rellenos- everything is good.

I have never had to pay extra for a second round of chips, and I have been going to Los Portales for over 5 years. Don't miss this restaurant. It is plain on the outside, but it is a treasure- if you like true Mexican food.

stopped by here with a few people as it was a convenient place to grab a bite to eat. the plastic on the tables does give the feel of a local family owned place with no frills.  the chips, salsa and guac were fine. the salsa was very good but the guacamole was just alright.  i had the tacos de asada and it was  tasty but not fantastic.  my only complaint was that the tortilla was a bit dry.  i would probably go again but i'm not sure it'll be one of my top choices.

Second time is the semi-charm.  I ate here a couple of years ago for breakfast and I recall that it was good, but not fantastic.  A friend suggested it again, she couldn't remember the name but gave me the location.  I said, "oh yeah, right by the laundromat!"
We had gone to a chain restaurant earlier that day for lunch but the service was so bad, we left without eating.  I could have eaten the rubber off of the steering wheel by the time we arrived so I was glad there were chips and tasty-spicy salsa served pronto while we perused the menu.  The service was warm and friendly, the food was fresh, hot and good.  The atmosphere isn't the greatest but I will be back for the seafood dishes,  therefore giving it an opportunity for a fourth or even fifth star.

Ordered a beef/bean burrito.  Wasn't inedible, but definitly wasn't good.  I'm a terrible cook (this why I eat out a lot) but I think I could have made that burrito.  Everything about it tasted like it came directly from the convenience aisle at the grocery store.  If you use canned refried beans, sorry, your not a legitamate Mexican restaurant.

I agree with the other review, that Los Portales is great, but for totally different reasons.  Mexican food, from different areas of Mexico, is like Italian food.  Huge varieties.  What might be an "enchilada" in one are of Mexico, might be an "empanada" in another area.  Several varieties of cheeses, from soft fresh cheeses like "queso blanco" to wonderful aged hard cheeses, like "cotija".  And melting cheeses like "asadero".  And, the creams such as "crema mexicana" and "crema agria".  Let's face it, Mexican food is just as sophisticated as Italian or French cuisine.  No doubt about it.  If you are looking to find something a little different from the same ole U.S. Mexican food, try Los Portales.  From the shrimp cocktail to the shrimp fajita, to the camarones del diablo.  A totally different experience.

A dozen different geological locations, and a dozen different kinds of food.  Los Portales represents Colima, Mexico, near Monzanillo.  They use a lot of seafood.  They use a Mexican white sauce, something you never see in Colorado.  The previous review discussed the usual, Colorado fare.  A combination plate that usually includes an enchilada, a burrito, and a taco, all doused with green chile.  This restaurant will sell you that stuff, but they excell with shrimp and fish.  Refried beans and spanish rice?  No.  They have black beans and a Colima rice.

This place has some of the best, authentic "Mexico" Mexican food I've found in Colorado.  Too bad they don't get the credit they are due.

Fantastic Food best describes this place!
Don't be put off by the tables being covered in plastic. As you dive into the salsa and fresh warm chips, you'll understand why the tables have the grandma-like plastic coverings. I had to drop one star from this place as the chips and salsa yet good, are not complimentary after the first helping. A charge of $1.50 for extra chips and salsa caused me to drop one star from this review as I never saw this charge posted.
I had the "Combination #2". Chicken burrito with one beef and one cheese enchilada. The order was prepared quickly and the freshness was superb.  My standard for rating Mexican food is based highly off of the fried ice cream. If you have enough room, GET IT.  A fried cinnamon and sugar shell encompasses a wallop of ice cream with a fried crunchy, yet smooth outer coating with wells of strawberry and chocolate syrups. Shared among two, or horded for yourself, it is highly recommended.
