Late night chicken and waffles and sausage and egg sandwich is heaven. You can smell the fresh waffles before you step foot in the door and they never disappoint. My favorite is te breakfast sandwich with a sausage patty the size of a burger patty with a very holy egg on a homemade biscuit. I've ordered it te last half a dozen times I've been here and it's always the best late night comfort food. I also dig the rotating cider tap, which are always local.
Review Source:Great atmosphere, friendly staff, a simple menu with great micros on tap. The food is fancier than your standard bar fare, which you might just have to be in the mood for. Not a good place to watch a game, but great for the pretentious anti-sports crowd. My wife and I dig 'me for a quick drink and munches on occasion. Cool place.
Review Source:Mac and cheese with crispy onions and bacon was super tasty...this is so not the blue box. There was a cool mix of music which was mostly new to me but I liked it. The staff was nice and helpful while I tried to figure out which beer I was going to enjoy first. I really like this place...it probably my favorite place downtown to hang out.
Review Source:I saw they had new vegetarian options - this was advertised in a local paper.  I did not see anything new?  Still waiting for a few more healthy options to go with  my beer.
The owner messaged me and there are new options!! Â Vegan even. Â I will go back and try for sure as I really like the vibe. Â And an owner who is paying attention to customers. Double bueno!
This place had me at the decor. Â It is a balanced mix of mid-century, modern, hipster and industrial. Â To be honest, I came here for a birthday party and did not order food. Â I looked at the fine selection of eats, beers and drinks and ultimately decided on Rainiers. Â
The staff was friendly even though it was busy. Â I was served quickly. Â
I am a firm believer that if a place cares about the art on the walls and what they serve, everything else follows.
1 star for location only. Â Disappointing service, there is none! Â Very disappointing menu. Â I was one of many looking forward to Lowbar, it is nothing like I expected. Â I gave them "time" for adjustment after opening, as everyone I knew that went soon thereafter gave it horrible reviews. I didn't want to believe them but then I went for myself...sadly they were right. Â I ordered a burger, what it should read on the menu is "BUN WITH A VERY SMALL SIDE OF BEEF". Â No non-alcoholic beers either. Â I should say though, if you like breakfast for lunch or dinner you might be in luck, so those of you that do, can disregard this review and possibly enjoy one of a very small handful of choices.
The service....they will not come to your table to take your order or bring you anything, I can somewhat accept that, but they will take the time to come to your table to tell you they won't be taking your order... okay then  :/
The JOJOs and burger are amazing. The atmosphere is exactly what vancouver needed. I love this place. Its usually busy, so I guess other people love it too.
Beware of the jojos though, let those suckers cool before sticking them down your gullet or you to shall know the perils of roof-of-the-mouth-blister. BUT SO DAMN WORTH IT. yum!
Nice staff. Gross jojo's. Like really really gross. I think they just quartered a huge  potato and rolled it in some inedible, rock-like cornmeal and cooked them long enough to make it tepid. I don't hate the place, but there are plenty of places downtown with cheaper drinks AND edible food which will probably deter me from coming back in.
Review Source:This place rules.
Lowbar is a great addition to Vancouver's (weird) bar scene. Â I'm a Vancouver native who lives in Portland now, and I love Lowbar so much that I've journeyed over the bridge many, many times to meet my friends and family for drinks! Â The crowd at Lowbar is definitely a mix of all ages, and the vibe is very laid-back.
The food is A++, and tax is even included in the price. Â The hamburger features a homemade sweet potato bun (omg and pickled onions), the fried chicken is delicious, and there is gravy (so much gravy). Â There are also waffles, and amazing jo-jo potatoes breaded in cornmeal. Â
The drinks are good/strong, and I like the speciality cocktails quite a lot! Â The bartenders are also very knowledgeable and friendly, definitely willing to give you some advice or suggestions. Â My only slight issue is that some of the liquors seem to be a TINY bit overpriced (which I am willing to overlook to support this rad place). Â
If only Vancouver could have been this cool when I was in high school...
If only Lowbar had a sister bar in NE Portland...
Biscuits and gravy, fresh fried donuts and great selections of liquor? Oh my. The only reason this is four stars instead of five is some of the liquor is a little bit ludicrously priced. (E.G. $9 a shot for Hendrick's or St. Germain)
However, the food is top notch and reasonably priced, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful, with just the right amount of customer interaction-- no one was actively trying to be my therapist, but every tender I've had has always been down for a chat.
Pasqual was the bartender working the last time I was there, and he was just sweet as pie, and made the hell out of a personal favorite cocktail of mine, and even had recommendations on how to improve it.
The food coupled with the amazingly competent drink slingers make this one of the best places in Vancouver (granted, that's not saying much in Vancouver, but still).
I loved this place! I visited my friend in Vancouver for her birthday and we decided to walk here. It was a Monday night so it was pretty dead in there, but we weren't really expecting it to be busy. We sat in the awesome chairs by the window next to the fake fire... seriously the cutest set up!
The bartender was extremely nice and friendly, and the specialty beers were pretty tasty. We ordered the mac n' cheese and it was seriously exactly what I needed in my life. I almost wish I didn't live 2.5 hours away so I could go back for more.
I absolutely loved this bar, and if I am ever in the area again I know FOR SURE I will be stopping by!
Went to Lowbar on a Wednesday night and my wife and I were thoroughly impressed with the service and drinks. We arrived during happy hour and we ordered two specialty cocktails (the bartender was nothing but helpful...he steered me to a drink that was awesome). I had a second drink that was a sipping drink (made with Gin, bitter and vermouth-I forgot the name)...my wife stuck with beer. We didn't order food but will the next time we're in. The prices/drinks and most of the atmosphere was great. I have a suggestion for this place...you're a quaint, eclectic, bohemian bar...why so many tv's that are on the stupidest channels? There's a wine bar in Orange County that plays old 1940's to 1960's movies on the tv's at night (and when the big game is one...of course you want tv's). It took away from the ambience (at one time the five tv's were showing commercials). Try looping in something that adds to the already cool atmosphere (Storage Wars does nothing for us). Other than that...I'll be back! I'll follow up after we eat there.
Review Source:I really like this place. Â I like the staff. Â I like the food. Â I like the layout. Â I like the beer selection. Â The prices are fantastic. Â I like that it's within walking distance of my house. Â I'd say there's definitely a cool factor, but it's a friendly, mellow and agreeable kind of cool factor (not the pretentious and indifferent variety you find at some places south of Vancouver). Â I hope they stick around.
Review Source:Stopped in for a drink and received the worst service I've ever had in a restaurant/bar in Vancouver for the 7 years I've lived here. Server wanted to pretend that happy hour wasn't still on. Another customer informed me and my friends about it. We asked about the happy hour drinks and he told us to read it ourselves. Sorry I didn't have my glasses and the chalkboard menu was blurry and far away. What an ass.
Worst service in Portland is better than this. We were pretty much ignored, then the ass tossed my shy friend an order number and told her to hand it to the table behind us. Apparently he's also too lazy to do his own job. I know two other acquaintances that came here before me and had bad service as well. Too bad I wasn't forewarned. I hope you take my advice and don't come here for bad food and really bad service.
Unique gourmet grub, obscure and tasty beer menu, and the best atmosphere in downtown Vancouver. Â
Food: Possibly the best Reuben I've had in my life. Â I mean it; it stands up to anything Roses, or even Katz's deli in NYC, can throw at it. Â It literally melts in your mouth. Â The burger is a tasty little nugget; the home made sweet pickles and gruyere made it the perfect combination of salty and sweet. Â
Scene: Â Laid back, hip, well thought out design. Â Friendly servers behind the bar. Â This is definitely not the NASCAR crowd that you sometimes see in downtown Couv-town.
Cost: Â $6 for lunch! Â It's Muchas Gracias pricing for Paragon quality food. Â The portions are a bit on the small side, but the quality definitely makes up for the lack of quantity.
Just what downtown needed and my new "local".
I really wanted to love this place. With menu items like "shit on a shingle", I was ready for some good 'ol food. Well, not so much.
This place is nestled between my favorite vintage shop, "Most Everything" and my Tuesday happy hour hang out "Tommy O's" in downtown Vancouver. Our first visit was during the second week it was open. Had a seat at the bar, nice decor, low key, nice folks. I had a glass of red wine off the HH menu. My husband had a mixed drink. Both were pretty good.
The owners talked a lot about the farm to table philosophy to keep costs low, which being in the pacific NW, I completely bought in to. We ordered some Jojos (potato wedges for those who don't know) and a spinach salad. The Jojos could have used a little salt but the "special" ketchup made it good. The spinach salad was pretty good but the portion was very small.
So, our plan was to make this our Tuesday spot. The next visit, I ordered a burger and Jojos. Ummmm, should I say I ordered gristle with some specs of beef, or some thing. Each bite was filled was gristle and odd seasoning. It was probably the worse burger I have ever had in my life. The Jojos weren't cooked all the way through either. I was very disappointed.
My husband ordered the fired chicken and a biscuit. The chicken was dry and over cooked, the biscuit crumbled.
When the waitress came to gather our plates, she noticed my food wasn't touched much. I wasn't going to complain but she asked me if there was something wrong. I told her the burger was inedible but I was fine paying for everything. She came back with our check and told me she couldn't charge me for it since it was so bad. I did appreciate that. Â
So this is a nice place to go for a glass of wine only. There's a cool vibe, the people are friendly. However, If you want food, go next door to Tommy Os.
When we first walked into Low Bar, we were pretty excited. The atmosphere was fun, the staff seemed friendly, the customers looked happy and engaged. I ordered the fried chicken and some iced tea. I was surprised that the tea came already sweet as I am on a sugar restricted diet, but I figured I'd just ask for something else next time. The fried chicken had a very nice, old fashioned crust, very much like my Sainted mother used to make, but I was disappointed in the taste, it was rather bland.
The next time we came, I figured I'd play it safe and just get the signature burger and this time ask about the iced tea. Well... The only Iced tea they have is Arizona brand, so it doesn't come with no sugar. The Waiter very kindly offered to make some tea from scratch, but they don't have any artificial sweetener, which is a little strange as far as I'm concerned. It says to me that they do not want people who are on a restricted diet.
Then the burger... Yes, the bun seemed home made, but it was cold, as if it had recently been taken out of the refrigerator, which detracted from the overall effect. The burger itself was under-seasoned and seemed slightly on the mushy side. I mean, it was not awful, but it could have been so much better with just a little effort.
The Jo Jos looked great. They had a nice seasoned crust on them, but the inside was mushy, again, not too bad, but just not quite right.
This place comes so close to being great. It has a nice atmosphere, the staff is friendly and fun, the menu is creative and off beat, it is almost exactly what we are looking for in a neighborhood bar and grill, but it just misses the mark by a little bit. I can only hope that management does not take this review in a negative way and sees the room for improvement. Honestly, with a few small tweaks in the food department, it could easily be our number one choice for a regular night out.
Low Bar has consistently amazed and delighted me since its opening in Downtown Vancouver. Â Great location on Washington Street---one block east of Esther Short Park/Hilton area...and off the first exit I -5, over the Bridge, for the Portlanders.
There are two food items that I previously never ordered "out", but now thoroughly enjoy at Low Bar--a burger, and fried chicken. With the burger, they grind several different cuts of natural beef for the most outstanding flavor I have ever experienced. :)). They cook it to order, then it sits on a Sweet Potato Brioche with a choice of cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, in-house pickles, and marinated onions--yum! Â It comes with a side of Jojo's and cole slaw...but I usually opt for simply a larger side of slaw (chunky cabbage, onion and apple, with very light dressing--just the way I like it) or the Spinach Salad.
The chicken is pressure cooked, sealing in the moistness and leaving out the grease...and the flavor is outstanding. Â Again, I order with the Cole Slaw or Spinach Salad and a glass of red wine....and looking forward to Sunday evening with the addition of Trivia that night!
Thank you, Low Bar, for "hitting the ground running" just before the Holidays...and continuing to serve the Vancouver/ Portland area with food, drink, ambience and a fabulous Staff!
My husband and I have sporatic date nights (as we have a 13 month old.) So, we decided to give Lowbar a try on our last one.
For a Friday night, it was still easy to find a good seat. Â After ordering we grabbed a couple of drinks. Â The drinks were well made (and strong too!) Â
I was most looking forward to their homemade burger and jojos. Â Though the burger was great, the jojos left something to be desired. Â They were basically a potato cut in fourths, slightly fried and seasoned. Â Average at best. Â The burger was fantastic, but the best part of the burger was the home-made bun. Â
So, though the experience was average, I'd probably not return.
My new favorite bar in Vancouver. It's got all the coolness of Portland, without the need to cross the bridge. Â The bartenders are friendly, helpful, polite, cool, cute, relaxed and everything I could possibly want from a bartender. The drinks are strong, and the beer selection is awesome. They make a killer bloodymary, along with everything else. The food so far has been a little hit or miss. Â I really like their mushroom gravy, but my meat eating friends say the sausage gravy isn't as great. Â I like the waffles, the hash browns are more like home fries, and the jojos are good, but I like mine with more seasoning salt. Â We do wish they had some veggies, or a hummus plate on the late night menu. Â The patrons range from young and hip, to older and friendly. Â A good mix of people. They seem to stay pretty busy on the weekends, standing room only, but midweek it's easy to grab a whole table.
This still is one of the best bars in Vancouver.
Came here on a Monday night on the recomendation from a local beer distributor. Â We were more than impressed. Â I agree with all the other reviews that claim we have needed a place like this in Vancouver for WAY too long. Â The food is good, the ambiance is good, the drinks are great, and our bartender/server Oswald(?) was great as well. Â Will definitely be making this our new regular spot to grab some delicious mac and cheese and drinks!
Review Source:Finally, a reason for Portlanders to go to the 'Couve! Â While there are not a lot of vegetarian options, the mac 'n cheese is worth the trip. Â If you're a strict vegetarian, get it without the fried onions on top as they cook them in the same fryer they cook the chicken in (although you'll be missing the awesome flavor combo). Â Don't forget to try it with some Aardvark sauce (who knew it would taste so good?!)!
The mixed drinks are great but the beer selection is out of this world. Â Beers you probably won't find anywhere else in the area show up here.
The staff are friendly and helpful. Â Just be aware that this is "order at the bar" service; they don't take your order at the table. Â
The price point is ridiculously good here, especially given that tax is factored into the price.
This is a comfortable, friendly place to have food and drinks in downtown Vancouver.
They make all of their food from scratch and it shows! You're not going to find trendy delights here but you WILL find some honestly delicious fare. Some times all I want is to be able to sit with a couple of friends, drink delicious beer (or cocktails, full bar with a cracker jack team) and actually talk to my friends.
"WHOA there, buddy," you might say, "My friends are jerks and I don't like talking to them!"
Well then they've STILL got you covered. The bar tenders are friendly and always willing to be drawn into conversation when they have time.
I was even given something new (to me) to try last time I was in. You've got to realize that as an enthusiastic drinker myself, this is not a normal occurrence. Still, while it's incredibly simple, tossing a shot of fireball into my crisp hard apple cider MIGHT have changed my life.
So, the point of all this is to say, grab a couple friends and go here. Or leave the bums at their house and do some work. They've got wifi! You're bound to be happy in the warm, welcoming environment.
PS Try the fried chicken. DELICIOUS! I didn't like the coleslaw though.
PPS Put gravy on everything. They seem to suggest it and they ARE NOT WRONG!
I've had the Reuben, the burger and the corned beef hash. They are all excellent. The beer selection is very good, nice variety. Low Bar's atmosphere feels laid-back and the lunch crowd is light, so it is a great option at mid-day. But, I suspect with the quality of this place, they will continue to attract converts. Highly recommend!
Review Source:I completely agree with the comments that Vancouver has needed a place like this. There was literally no bar I thought was worth spending any time and money at until I found out about this place. Â The atmosphere is a great blend of modern-rustic and vintage, with some 8-bit video game decor thrown in. Great eye candy every time. The food is so good, limited but charming. They make just about everything in-house, house ground beef and sausage, house made pickles. Rotating pies that are TO DIE FOR. I don't really like potatoes but their jo-jo's are nothing like you have ever had. They take an ENTIRE potato, slice it into huge wedges, hand bread them in cornmeal, and serve with herbs. Ask for a side of the house buttermilk-tarragon dressing with these! I can't wait to come in and try their all day breakfast oriented menu options like the breakfast sandwich and their country fried steak. Mac n Cheese is aMAZEballs. All of their late night options are served with your choice of gravy. I had the fried chicken and a sweet waffle the other night. It was delish but I wish I had gotten a bit more chicken. Â For the prices, though, there's no room to complain.
The drinks are also very good, unique beer and liquor selection and CHEAP (at least early and late) - House wine 3.50/glass and I believe the well liquors also are that price. Big selection of tall boys. The staff are all super friendly and funny. I seriously can't believe there are enough people in Vancouver I would actually enjoy being in a bar with to fill this place up each night- seriously, Vancouver needed this place. And all that without the obnoxious overtly pretentious hipster vibe you get in Portland. Truly amazing accomplishment. Cheers to you Lowbar, and to me getting excited about something in Vancouver.
Stopped in last night with some friends. Had some delicious black current cider. Â Were I not driving home soon after, I would have imbibed in one of the intriguing mixed drinks. Â I also had a biscuit with mushroom gravy and I still can't stop thinking about it. Â It was honestly that good. Â Staff was super friendly as well. Â If I lived closer, I would be here weekly!
Review Source:Stopped in on my way home last night. Â It's exactly what I look for in a bar. Â Friendly bartenders, cool atmosphere, and great tap beers. Â I didn't eat, but the food looked amazing coming out of the open kitchen (another bonus). Â I've found my new watering hole:)
12/30/12
Had dinner last night. Â All I can say is OMG! Â The best fried chicken EVER. Â Seriously. Â My cousin & I sampled 6 different items, each had 2 top shelf drinks, and the bill was only around $60. Â So affordable! Â And the bartender was great, as usual. Â
Totally hooked!
Vancouver has needed a place like this for a while! The menu isn't like every other bar. They have unique choices and combinations of food. I could tell my meal was made with fresh ingredients and it was piping hot when served. My only gripe is that the food needed a touch more seasoning i.e. Salt and garlic. Looks like another poster stated the same. The atmosphere is great! Â Can't wait to spend many more Happy Hours here :)
Review Source:I'm glad to see this place open in downtown Vancouver. The atmosphere is very comfortable and the prices are reasonable. I recommend the fried chicken with mushroom gravy. The chicken is lightly breaded (cornmeal?), very crispy and moist inside. Sausage gravy or mushroom gravy? Mushroom. Yes, it's that good. Â Though I haven't tried the burger myself yet, a few of my friends have and they were gushing over it. The house drink menu is really unique and I'm looking forward to making my way down the list.
