I don't understand why this restaurant only has 3.5 stars... are people not ordering the right things or what?!?
The bangers. Just remember the bangers. Order it, you'll love it. The irish nachos are delicious (comes on a sizzling platter and is also on the happy hour menu), and the bbq pulled pork sandwhich is great too. Another great menu item is the shepard's pie, I know there aren't too many people that are fans of this dish, but Maher's makes a mean shepard's pie, and you'll savor every bite with your eyes closed for sure...
If you've never tried Mahers, bookmark it and try it, if you have and don't agree with it being more than 3.5 stars, try it out again (go for happy hour) and order some of the mentioned items, hopefully it'll change your mind! I can't say much for the happy hour beers and drinks, I usually just go for food and leave the drinking up to the boys, but the food is absolutely scrumptious.
I had another outstanding dining experience at Mahers last night. The place was packed, the servers were busy, and the music was fantastic. Despite the large crowd on a Thursday night, our service was prompt, friendly, and lacking nothing. I have probably been to this pub 4 times since my initial review, and I can not say enough good things about it.
Review Source:Authentic Irish pub in Lake Oswego!
Great beer and cider, but they also have a small wine selection. The food is pretty tasty. The food portions might seem small but it's all quite filling. I've been going to Maher's for several years but on my most recent trip we got a reuben, a shepherd's pie, and their suggested beer pairings. We also got a salad on the side that was as large as our entrées.
Their new(-ish) location is an old house, which makes for a cozy atmosphere and there's a great outdoor area. Their patio is perfect for a cold beer in the summer, and in the winter they get their fireplace going and it just makes you want to eat more potatoes and drink more beer.
Maher's is a fun place to go if you just want a beer or want a meal. And they're open until 2am every day, which is pretty rare in Lake O.
Despite the  negative reviews regarding slow service, we have only experienced nothing but good service. We went there today and they were slammed and even then the service was great.  The food is absolutely delicious! We order the Reuben and the Whiskey cheddar burger, they were both the best burger and Reuben that we have ever had in town.
They have a great outdoor back patio that is spacious and kid friendly. The Reuben was $10 and the burger was $12. Thick cut generous portion of bacon, this burger is something you'll crave the rest of your life. Â The pastrami is roasted and aged on site and again, Â the generous amount of pastrami in combination with the kraut and high end Swiss cheese will have you not being able to put the sandwich down.
I would never go here again. Â It sucks because i thought it would be a cool place because it always looks crowded. Â And they have live music.
We came here with a group of 7 people, and sat down to an empty room. Â Even better! Quiet enough to chat, and we should theoretically monopolize the waitress. Â This blonde came by. Â And for some reason she just did not write anything down.
1) We were in the middle of ordering. Â She seemed rushed. Â In fact, she SKIPPED over people in our group entirely for ordering food when she rushed out. Â
2) We added orders once she came back. Â Then she complained about how people weren't ordering when they were supposed to.
3) I asked for a Caesar salad. Â I did not get a Caesar salad. I got another salad. Â By then we were so put off, there was no point in trying to correct it.
4) there were no veggie options except for french fries and a salad?? ughh.
5) Food for such shitty service and low choice amounted to $40 for two people??
6) portions were small.
7) Food came out in spurts- 20 minutes away from each other. Â So I personally didn't even eat until everyone else was done.
8) By the time we had told the waitress we had gotten all our food, she never came back! Half our later, we had to go look for someone to give us our checks. Â
9) this pub is not "authentic." Â Pics of American presidents and country music doesn't do it. Â Although that is evened out as they supposedly play Celtic live music.
We left to go somewhere else as soon as we paid.
So glad this place is close. My fiance and I recently moved to a place on the river, which is great, but it's JUST above L.O on HWY 43 - quite a change from my place on NW 21st. Ah well - marriage is about compromise, right?
Anyway, this place was a godsend because it's low-key, great for a weeknight drink, but even better for a MID-SUMMER, weeknight or weekDAY drink -- therein lies the charm, people. This place has an amazing outdoor space. It's basically a repurposed house, and not only do they use the front and side yards for seating, they have also designed the back yeard with booths, tall tables, short tables, a full bar and kitchen, heaters, as well as a stage. And on Sunday nights, they show features - a few weeks back, it was The Big Lebowski followed by Snatch. So great.
Service is good, and happy hour is REALLY good. Also check out the website for live music.
Food average, service horrific. Had a young, short haired kid wait on us and he was more interested in playing with his phone and flirting with his co workers than paying attention to our empty pints. Our group of 5 waiting 15 minutes just to be acknowledged after we were sat down. Â Had to literally waive him down on several occasions to get his attention. Spent 160 on dinner and drinks for 5 and may never go back because of him. Cool backyard scene though with live music and some drunk 50 year olds dancing for entertainment. Was going to stiff the kid to make a point , but he wouldnt have had a clue why.
Review Source:I love Maher's! It has a really fun atmosphere and great staff. It is a pub so food isn't always super fast out of the kitchen. I love going for Monday night trivia, it is a really great time. My one gripe with them is I wish they would switch up the menu sometimes, but it is at least consistently good. PS.... don't go on st.patricks day
Review Source:Who would have thought Lake Oswego would have a great Irish pub? The food is solid, the drinks and selection are good. The pool table seems to be an afterthought, which is about my only criticism. It can get quite busy, but with live music and authentic atmosphere, it's usually worth it.
Review Source:If you haven't been to Maher's Pub, you're missing out! Â I absolutely love this place, it's exactly what Lake Oswego needs. Â They have incredible happy hour food (reuben sliders and shepherds pie are my faves) and ALWAYS have great beers on tap. Â Love the service, love the atmosphere. Â If you're looking for an authentic Irish Pub experience, Maher's is the place to go!
Review Source:Feels authentic to the pubs I frequented in Ireland, kind of makes you forget you're in Lake Oswego. The wait staff has always been nice. And we happened to catch them on Groupon which made our meal very inexpensive. Â We didn't love the Sheperd's pie, although it was not bad, we've had better elsewhere. Our Daughter enjoyed going here, so we'll be back, but just need to find the items on the menu that suit us best.
Review Source:I'm surprised to see so many negative reviews for this place, i've been several times and have never had a bad experience. In fact, my husband (who is from England) and I both feel that Maher's is the most authentic pub experience we've found this side of the pond.
From the moment I walked in, I felt instantly at home. This converted craftsman style house has all the charm of a real pub. What I love about a traditional pub in the UK is that you'll get young and old patrons mixing together enjoying a beer and that is exactly what you'll find here. One of the other reviews commented on a smell inside the pub which i personally have never noticed, but even if it does have one, pubs aren't supposed to smell like roses! In fact, I prefer it if they don't.
It's a nice crowd that hangs out here, every time we go we end up making new friends, and I've always found the service to be top notch. I've sat both inside and on the outdoor patio and have had good service and food in both sections.
The quiz night on Monday is a lot of fun and my husband and I took 3rd place one time! I've never been disappointed in the food, the prices are a little high, but the quality and portions are good in my opinion. I especially enjoyed the cheese and fruit plate appetizer. Also the happy hour small plates are a steal.
In the summer we use to hangout in the back patio and listen to live music, there is a great, relaxing atmosphere back there, all the week's stresses seemed to melt away.
If you are looking for a place to chill out and have a drink with some nice people and good food then I think you should consider Maher's!
New location rocks - and very similar to some pubs I visited while in Maynouth, Ireland - good thing the owners are Irish. Â Great outdoor patio, with cozy seating inside. Â Pros: they know how to pull a GORGEOUS Guinness, menu isn't really veg-friendly, but there's always a good supply of colcannon (mashed potatoes with cabbage). Â Cons: good luck finding somewhere to sit inside. Â It's really crowded, which either adds to the cozy atmosphere, or finds you annoyed at having to stalk someone for their table. Â If they ever get a permanent fryer - the halibut fish and chips are some of the best I've ever had ...just not permanently on the menu. Â Sigh.
Review Source:Don't go here!
The Guinness was flat and the chicken-curry looked and tasted like vomit.
They are severely understaffed. It took our poor waitress (who was in charge of the entire outside seating area) an extraordinary amount of time to give us menus, bring our drinks, take our order and bring our food. We were by no means the only dissatisfied/annoyed table in the area.
Lousy experience. No positives at all.
Went to Maher's quite a bit this past winter and was happy with food and service. But the last time I went, in July, the person I met for dinner and I didn't finish our meals because the food was not up to standard--and then we both got food poisoning. I had already decided not to return before I got sick, but I decided to write this review because I just reconciled my credit card statement and discovered that the tip I'd left was rounded up.
Review Source:I live 2 streets away from Mahers. So, I (we) go there ALL the time. Sometimes 3 - 4 times a week since they're open pretty late for dinner in Lake Oswego (most places close at 9PM, I know bad!).
Location: 5 stars
Food: 2 stars
Service: Kitchen and Bar - 1 star; servers 3.5 stars. Hey, if you've worked in a restaurant you know, as a server you can't make the bar/kitchen move any faster. That is the MANAGER's job!
Best of Mahers: Outdoor patios. Mostly nice servers. Beer selection is good. The food is average though.
Worst of Mahers: The aroma inside is a bit stale and sweaty, possibly due to poor ventilation, slow kitchen & bar (too slow), they run out of food on the menu quite often.
My husband absolutely loves this place (he's from Germany and likes the vibe there) but every time we go there we are amazed at how slow it is. There is so much I could write here but the gist is - only go there if you have time or if you plan to sit AT the bar.
That said, we talk all the time about how they could improve service - bottom line hire a few more people and bite the bullet that you only have to pay...ah....almost nothing as they work on tips. Lots of people are there = more drinks and food = more revenue = more tips. The additional help will pay off! It's amazing to us how the management either doesn't notice or doesn't care.
All that said, let the management know this rather than just review. Hopefully they will listen to the customers. So far, we haven't seen any results but, Â maybe, If enough of us tell them maybe, just maybe, they'll listen.
**Most importantly**, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE don't make the servers suffer with a bad tip because the bar and the kitchen is, literally, the slowest I've EVER experienced. The girls that work there are constantly running around trying to get to people. The guys, not so much. There are a couple of bad servers there - so I'm not referring to tipping appropriately is the server is just plain bad.
Take it all in and just notice also that the setup has really slowed down the servers too. They can get outside only 1 of 2 ways and each one is a hike to get to the far corners of the place. Clearly the operations need to be reengineered.
Wait.....wait......wait.....wait....wait some more ........beg for service.........wait some more.........and longer and longer......and then finally drink your 14 ounce over-priced "pint". Â Wait some more......wait ......wait....order a second 14 ounce pint, and wait some more for the bill......go pick up your car from Firestone........NEVER to return!
Review Source:As a Southeast portlander, I have high standards for my pubs and Maher's makes the cut. Â Last night there was wonderful live music (two guitar players) and a Timber's game on the big screen. Â There are multiple seating options: back deck with music and TV, out front where you can easily talk and enjoy the mini garden with kale and beans, cozy funky indoor seating perfect for a rainy day. Â
There beer selection was limited (will go for whiskey next time) but the bread pudding desert soaked in Irish cream was fantastic!
Overall, the most relaxed, least "suburbany" place I've been to in LO and will likely be a staple for when I visit family.
Maher's is everything I would expect from an Irish Pub:
*Tasty, traditional Irish comfort food
*Great happy hour specials
*Killer beer and whiskey selections
*Awesome, friendly atmosphere (kid friendly too)
*Lively and friendly patrons
The only complaint I can share is the waitstaff can get busy/overwhelmed so if you are in a hurry, I would visit during off peak hours (before 6pm and after 8pm).
On the weekends, get there early as indoor seating can be hard to come by. There is usually plenty of outdoor seating which is a huge bonus as the weather improves.
I love this family owned and operated Pub. I will be a loyal patron for years to come!
We were looking for something near the Lakewood Center in Lake Oswego for a quick bite to eat before our show on a Friday night. When we arrived, there was no hostess waiting, no sign directing us, and an outright mob of people inside. We pressed through to the bar, where a waitress caught us and said she'd find us a table.
Ordered a couple of pints at the bar and got some seats on a wicker chair and a re-cushioned church pew next to possibly the most self-important man in the room and waited about 15-20 minutes before we were even able to catch our waitress. She had waited on the table across from us at least 3 times, and we had been passed by by all of the other staff more than once in that time.
When we finally got a chance to order, the only time we saw our waitress in the next 25 minutes was when she dropped by to ask if we had gotten our beers at the bar, and if we had closed out our tab there. (We had, and.. this just shows some serious lack of organization) The next time we saw her, she finally brought the beer that I had ordered from another waitress when our food was delivered.
The food was the only positive part of this venture. I had the chicken curry, and it was savory and delicious. The roasted potatoes were perfect, and the chicken was tender.
Terrible prices. Terrible service at the front of the house. Terrible table service. This place might be great if you can wedge yourself in at the bar on a Wednesday afternoon, but .. until they get a ringmaster, or a staff willing to share the burden of a busy evening, I'd recommend staying away.
Great neighborhood pub. Perfect pours, service with a smile and a menu that everyone can find something on. Â We went with a group of six adults and two young boys. Everyone had a different dish and everyone left with smiles and were glad to walk the four blocks home to walk off the full stomachs. Nice job turning the Backyard Bird Shop into the cozy Maher's Irish Pub!
Review Source:New location gives the place a cozy, pub like feel. Â
Pros:
* Friendly staff and helpful staff. Â
* In true corner pub fashion, this place is good for kids all the way through to my grandparents (especially with the ramp heading up to the front door!). Â
* Sunday Open Mic Night  - heard some great stuff so far. Â
* Surprisingly delicious desserts! Â
* Parking lot behind the building, combined with street parking ensures you a close spot.
Cons:
* Rather standard list of whiskey and scotch. Â Could throw in some less well known gems.
* On a couple of occasions it was a bit difficult to engage wait staff  - once you've got their attention/they know you are there, they are quite attentive.
So nice to have a relaxed local watering hole!!
I ended up at this place after a birthday dinner. I was really surprised but this place since it used to be a bird shop. The minute I sat down with my friends in the front of the house, I said it felt like I just sat down in someones living room. It's cozy, warm and quaint. A perfect place on a cold, rainy evening. The service was good and the drinks were very tasty.
Only con was that they were out of Boddington's on tap! A crime for an Irish pub!
I will definitely go back.
OMG! The new location is open and you HAVE to go. The Maher's are the most wonderful family and they have spent the last 5 months transforming a charming little house into an even MORE charming real pub.
I liked the old location but it was a bit cramped for everyone...not anymore. The new location has a wonderful fireplace room and large bar. They even have a "man cave" (girls allowed) downstairs with darts and pool and this interesting cubby hole currently dubbed the "make-out corner." (haven't seen any of that yet, though)
They also have a large back patio with shade when it's hot and heaters when it's not and a great gas firepit to light up your evening (in case the Guinness didn't)
They re-opened this past Monday, but the grand opening is Friday 10/1. If you liked anything about Maher's before, you're going to rave about it now. Dave tells me he's adding fish and chips to the menu. Don't tell my personal trainer. ;-)
I have tried to love Maher's. Like seriously tried. Part of it based on the rave Yelp reviews and also a recommendation from an Irish neighbor who enjoys the place. But for whatever reason, I have yet to have an excellent experience at this upscale Irish pub.
They've been open for a year or so on 5th Street and the space was just too small. Really more of a pub than restaurant. My family has visited for both lunch and dinner and during the St. Patrick's Day festival in Lake Oswego when they sponsor some activities (Irish dancing, music and food). We've tried multiple entrees and never had anything that I would rave about.
I haven't given up on this place, but wanted to note that they are currently closed. They are in the process of moving a couple blocks away to B Avenue. The space is still under construction, but I am hopeful that the new larger location and expanded menu they are advertising will finally make me a fan.
I get the sense I haven't experienced the best they have to offer. To be continued...
I love this place. Â It's not any one thing, it's just the way it all comes together. Â It's a friendly and fun, just the kind of place you would want to come and meet with friends. Â If you're not Irish, you'll feel like it when you hang out here. Â Their St. Patrick's day celebration is something you won't want to miss.
Review Source:Being new to the Lake O neighborhood, the hubby and I wandered in to Mahers on Saturday for a little breakfast.
Before I even stopped the car, hubbs was all but cooing over how this was going to be his fav new morning pit stop.
Was we wander in, we are immediately greeted, and told to make ourselves at home. We snag a booth, order up come coffee, and peruse the menu.
Irish cut bacon, smoked salmon hash, and eggs benedict on fresh butter smothered croissants...mother, this ought to be good!
Now I am a bit of a pain in the ass when it comes to my eggs benedict. Well, food in general. I expect my food to be blazing hot in temperature, and when it isn't I become grumpy. So, when I order eggs benedict, I typically ask for the food/plate to be scorching, as the sauce isn't. I also like my eggs poached medium well.
This time around, I decided to see how they serve it, without giving direction, other than the way I like my eggs.
Husband ordered the weekend special - Salmon Hash.
Ok, so they put my eggs on his hash, and his on mine, but I swear it was so good, I didn't even care.
The potatoes they served were tender, the food fantastic, and the temperature was acceptable.
That being said, I am already a huge fan, but then I notice $2 beers and trivia on Monday nights...this could become a habit.
Full bar, good wine list, cozy atmosphere...I really am starting to enjoy living in Lake Oswego!
