I was really looking forward to trying this out. Â When I first moved to Hawaii, I heard of the famous Mai Tai bar. Â I first confused it with the bar in Ala Moana Center. Â I then tried to find it and got lost wandering around the Royal Hawaiian CENTER, not the hotel. Â
I finally found it. Â I think I had to get more yelp savvy to find this place. Â Boy was I disappointed though. Â
We came to kill some time before our Magic of Polynesia show across the street. Â The hotel was a little crowded because they were setting up for a wedding in the beach courtyard. Â Just a side note: if you are planning to get married in Waikiki, please note that you WILL have tourists in all of your pictures, taking pictures of your wedding. Â I thought it was weird, but if that doesn't bother you, go for it.
This bar fronts the beach at the back of the hotel. Â Just follow the signs. Â We sat ourselves and waited, and waited, and waited. Â That is what we did most of the time, waited... for two drinks and one plate of duck bao buns, which were two bites for my small mouth and one large bite for my husband's. Â They seemed to have quite a few people staffed at the bar. Â I think I counted 6 not including bartenders. Â For how small the location is, I expected more timely service. Â If I had nothing to do, nowhere to be, and I wasn't hungry and could wait forever for food, sure the place could be enjoyable to sit out and relax. Â The buns were actually pretty tasty, heavy on the hoisin sauce. Â
However, I think I would rather try a different bar in Waikiki than return to this one.
Review is for drinks only -- similar to some previous posts, you don't go here to drink cheap, stopped in as our last beach bar drink before packing up and heading to the airport. Â I ordered a mai tai, which i believe was called the royal mai tai or something similar, just scroll to the most expensive mai tai on the menu, yep it was that one. Â it was definitely solid in my opinion, i'm not a mai tai expert, but i didn't find it too sweet, just right. Â my wife ordered a lava flow which was a drink she had started to enjoy while on the island, and taste tested at 3-4 other places on the island, and she felt this one was the best she had. Â noticed the use of fresh fruit/juices behind the bar, and they put this 3 snack mix thing in front of us that was a nice touch and tasty too. Â i can vouch for the drinks and would say definitely worth stopping by for one quality drink here if you are close by.
Review Source:Possibly the best Mai Tai I've ever had. This is what bought us back to the Mai Tai Bar in Waikiki. I ordered the original Mai Tai and its a masterpiece. A little expensive at $12 each but I'm on vacation in Hawaii so what the heck. It was so good I had to order 1 more.lol.
My wife ordered the pineapple drink that it is a real pineapple. Sounded touristy but it was probably the best tropical drink that the rather of us ever had. They cut open a pineapple and take out the insides, put it in a blender with ice and 3 shots of rum and put it back in. Nothing else but pineapple and rum! It's huge and so is the price at $25 each! Truly a once a year drink but it was so worth it.
I do like to splurge once in a while and Mai Tai Bar is where I do it. We came here last year and I'm sure we will go back next year too!
This bar is a must stop. The walk through the hotel grounds and hotel are beautiful. We of course had the mai-tai's. We came back a second time and had a Bahia that was amazing and fruity. My husband had a drink not on the menu anymore. It was an actual pineapple with different alcohols in it. They give you the slices of pineapple. It was $25 but so worth it. We stayed next door at the Sheraton which was crowded and packed. The Royal Hawaiian was so much more relaxing. Susan and Chris were great bartenders!
Review Source:Came here during a little "staycation" at The Royal Hawaiian. Â Right on the beach, it's a great place for a beer or a cocktail. Â Even for locals, it's a great reminder of how beautiful Hawaii is. Â
I probably wouldn't venture into Waikiki to come here specifically. But if you're in Waikiki anyway, this would be a good place for a cool drink.
Locals often sneer with disgust when the suggestion of visiting Waikiki arises, but man, you are MISSING OUT if you don't venture to the Mai Tai Bar for what I like to call the World's shortest staycation. For those of you who aren't yet ready to commit to an overnight stay at the Royal Hawaiian, by hanging out at this beachfront oasis, you are getting a slice of enjoyment that will hopefully satiate you during the work week.

It was my boyfriend's birthday and I decided to bring him to Waikiki for breakfast, a little dream shopping and a cocktail at the Mai Tai Bar. If the resort prices for cocktails here have kept you away, for the month of April you can enjoy their Madmen specials. Four delightful cocktails, each priced at $3. Yes, I repeat: THREE DOLLARS! That's pretty tough to beat anywhere! And for just THREE DOLLARS you get to enjoy a classic cocktail on the world's most famous beach.

We loved it so much that we decided to come back in the evening with our friends and again enjoyed a grip of THREE DOLLAR cocktails. But... we ended up with a crazy tab because we ordered food. The sampler platter was $39 and my favorite item was the AMAZING coconut shrimp. BEST EVAR. Aaand each of my children wanted a chicken nugget or cheeseburger meal which was $15 each. Did I mention I have three children? Ouch.

Service can get a little spotty at times so be sure to order up while you can and enjoy as many of those $3 cocktails as humanly possible!
Ryan helped me out today. I gave the menu a glance however really just wanted a bartenders speciality. Ryan succeeded in satisfying my taste buds and I even got my buzz on. His concoction was with makers ( upon my request) with fresh lime, lemon, basil whiskey and sugar. His master mind calls it the whiskey smash. It smashed these 5 stars for sure. Combined with the amazing customer service. You seriously can't go wrong here. Heads up, their Mai Tai's as the same implies are their specialty. But when you come in, ask for Ryan. He knows where it's at
Review Source:I'm sorry, but I'm not convinced. I would not go back.
The setting is agreeable - you're sitting by the beach with a view on the ocean. We went with my husband just to get Mai Tais. They have a few different ones - I had the scratch Mai Tai, he had the Mai Tai degeneres. Neither of us were impressed by the drink. I thought mine was a little too strong on the alcohol, and his was even more so. The drinks are overpriced for the quality - even taking the location into account.
The live music seemed to serve one purpose only: put everyone to sleep. We were glad to move on to another bar afterward.
Sip a Mai Tai and enjoy the Hawaiian sun with the sounds of clear waves crashing and palm trees swaying. Ordered a caesar salad here and it quite was interesting. They used anchovies instead of some other kind of meat which threw me off. It was a bit to fishy for my liking AND I am aware the caesar dressing contains anchovies but I'm not a fan of anchovies themselves. Don't ask why.... It's like how I love oranges but not oranges flavored anything. I know, I can get weird haha. But anyway, probably won't be getting any caesar salad in the near future. As far as the mai tai, it was strong. After two drinks, I was feeling a little buzzed which really doesn't happen until my 4th drink elsewhere. Just kidding, but no really....
Will I return? Of course.... If I have extra cash to spend because the drinks can be a bit expensive. Sure, I'm paying for the view but I can get the view for "free" (I say free because the flight is pretty much a sunk cost at that point) by walking around the gate, lie down under the Hawaiian sun, with the clear waves crashing, and the palm trees swaying less a Mai Tai.
Love this party venue. Â Always great atmosphere, wonderful music, happy hour pupus are decent and a nice variety of happy hour drinks. Â Drinks are pretty weak, 95% ice, 4% juice and 1% alcohol, which is safer in a way. Â I had three of the specialty drinks and some beer and on a scale of 1 to 10 for buzz, rated 2. The beer pitcher is great for all. Â We go often and love to bring visitors. Â Perfect location, go shopping and top it off with friends. Â
Other than Happy Hour, it could be tough on your wallet. Â It's just a great meeting place for fun and happy hours have been extended which helps. Â Have fun.
Living on the island I used to bring family and friends here to enjoy the view and drinks. Â You used to be able to rent a cabana with sofas, chairs, and tables for free in order to ensure you had a great spot! Â Then it went up to $150 minimum food and drink purchase and now it's $250! Â I would pay that price for a pool cabana where I can lounge all day, but not to just hang out with friends for a couple of hours at night. Â This is not Vegas or a night club, there is no bottle service, you are paying for a table. Â I am highly disappointed. Â Additionally, the drinks are watered down and there are better places to get drinks with a view on the island. Â I will no longer be coming to spend my hard earned money at this establishment.
Review Source:The location is beautiful but the waitress was not very attentive and very snooty when we asked her if they had a happy hour. They sure think they make good drinks but their Mai tai's were definitely the most expensive and not even the best we have had in Waikiki. They advertise live music starting at 6pm but we did not see anything by the time we left close to 7pm and instead were forced to listen to music by Shaggy. Save your money and go to the Banyan Bar at the Moana Surfrider for better drinks, nicer staff and real live entertainment.
Review Source:We stopped by on our way to dinner at Azure to celebrate with the official Mai Tai drink that was supposedly created here. Â Delicious, perfect and absolutely strong enough to get you buzzed after just one.
The little snacks they provide were delicious, wasabi peas and gold fish crackers. Â It's as if they read my mind.
Absolutely would come back if price didn't scare me away, I should try to find my Mahalo Rewards card next time and try to get a discount.
Views + setting = amazing experience.
Absolutely beautiful bar, located right on the shores of Waikiki Beach.
There are a number of private gazebo-type areas with comfortable couches, but also dining tables and a bar. Gorgeous decor, especially in the evening.
I highly recommend the cucumber mojito. I've never had anything like it... Plenty of alcohol, plenty of sugar - so refreshing.
What to drink? Â How about a Mai Tai (obvious).
This bar is part of the Royal Hawaiian and set right on the beach. Â It's pricey, but worth it! Â They play a variety of music, and upon getting my perfectly crafted Mai Tai (A+), the setting was made all the better by the musical stylings of the song Amber by 311.
This is a great stop if you are bar hoping on Waikiki. Â Ultimate chill party location, not a bunch of young kids having their first beer, but an established crowd who appreciate finer things.
Ahhhh!! I'm back! Stayed here two nights and it has been a little over a year. The Mai Tai Bar still lives up to its perfection: drinks (by Reid and Susan-ask for them!), cold Corona and the unparalleled view of Diamondhead. Service is spectacular and live music...had my mom with me this time for her first Hawaiian experience.
The drink costs haven't gone up since my last visit ($12 and $14 for Mai Tais), which was a pleasant surprise. The Firecracker Ahi Tuna Appetizer is $22 but well worth it.
Still magical, still special, still incredible. Thank you Starwood and The Royal Hawaiian for being such a special hotel and not catering to the masses. When you are looking for subtle, quiet elegance in a very relaxed atmosphere, skip on over to The Mai Tai Bar.
Sadly, it will most likely be another year till I return. That 10+ hour flight over is a beast.
I know this is THE place for a Mai tai in Waikiki but I have had a few down the beach that were pretty good for half the price. Especially during the many happy hour deals down the row of hotels. Â (shore bird yummy $3.50 mai tai)Maybe good to have one here for the experience or late night when other places may be closed?...but just pretty pricey.
After reading reviews I'm sad we didn't get any free snacks offered to us here. Â
I felt the scratch Mai tai didn't taste very alcoholic or strong but I guess I was tipsy afterward... I don't know if this is because they hid the alcohol well or I'm a lightweight. Â I actually enjoyed the inventiveness of the royal pinakona coco... Yummy like a milky coffee coconut drink over ice.
What's nice is to get a drink here then relax on the hammocks at the Sheraton
Nice ambiance and also one of my favorite bars in Waikiki. Â
PROS-
-Open late till midnight
-The complimentary snacks alone make this place 5/5; macadamia nuts wrapped in seaweed, wasabi peas, and gold fishes. Â I reloaded on these things 3 times.
CONS:
-Expensive; Drinks aren't as stiff as house w/o a key, but $1 cheaper at $10-$11 a pop. Â The pours are still very generous tho
-Hard to find
As I mentioned above, they open late, so I found myself coming here when House w/o a key was closed. View isn't at nice as house w/o a key and they don't have live music either. Â
This is a place for an older crowd too, maybe 30+.
Popular Hawaiian BeachFront bar with live music and warm breezes brushing against your face. Â
The vibe and view is so spectacular, so you have to expect to pay for it from your food and drink prices.
* Scratch Mai Tai $12
The Royal Hawaiian, a luxury collection resort classic... this is our original mai tai recipe made with fresh squeezed pineapple and orange juice, orange curacao, bacardi superior, orgeat and a beautiful float of whaler's dark rum.
(3 of 5) The Royal Pinakona Coco was tastier. I would put a pass on this drink, eventhough, it is the hotel's classic drink.
* Island Poke Trio $18
Fresh ceviche-inspired variations on ahi, shrimp, and octopus
(3 of 5) Nice snack combo. But not a wow appetizer. Â
* Royal Pinakona Coco $12
Muddled fresh pineapple, kona coffee, coconut cream and bacardi 8 year rum brewed to perfection, with a pinch of cinnamon, a luxury collection signature cocktail made for hawaii.
(3.5 of 5) Like a hawaiian white russian.
The food and drink was only ok, but the vibe was fantastic. Get there early to catch a seating next to the edge of the bar and enjoy the sunset for no extra charge.
We have a Mai Tai bar back home in Long Beach, CA. It's the go to bar for So.Cal locals to listen to reggae and live music. So of course, while in Hawaii, coming here would feel like home.
If you're a female and single - or not, and you want eye candy - come here. The best nights are Thurs-Sat, that's when all the locals come out.
Beer is $3 or $8 for a pitcher, cocktails average between $7-10.
Music is great, everyone is friendly, view is awesome whether you're looking at the guys or the beach ;)
Tourist trap alert.
I just had to try the world famous Mai Tai. Â Upon arrival, I asked the bartender which of the two was sweeter (and I did mention at this time I like sweet drinks) - the Royal or the Scratch? Â He told me the Royal. Â When I received my $14 drink, I was taken aback by how strong and awful the taste was - especially since it was not sweet at all. I told the bartender it tasted like cough medicine. He laughed and asked if he could taste it, which I allowed him to do.
He used a clean straw to dip in and he held the top of the straw to form a little vacuum and then pulled it away to try it as to not contaminate my drink, which I appreciated. Â What I didn't appreciate was after he told me that "that's how its supposed to taste," he didn't offer to make it sweeter for me, or offer me something that resembles a traditional tropical drink (i.e. a drink that is fruity, sweet, and delicious).
What business doesn't make at least a small effort to make a customer happy?
********** Â A quick footnote *********** Â
I got a message shortly after posting this review from someone on Yelp telling me I am in the wrong for complaining about not liking a Mai Tai, which is supposedly not intended to be sweet. Â So here we go again... if I give the bartender a heads up that I want a sweet drink and he knows that the drink he is about to make is not sweet, is it not his duty to steer me towards something that would be enjoyable for someone who likes sweet drinks? Â Or, at the very least inform me about how this is not like the Mai Tais I may have had on the mainland? Â Keep in mind that the review is not just for the drink, but for the overall experience.
Secondly, since you asked me if I have ever had a Mai Tai, the answer is yes; however, the Mai Tais that I have had in the past (none of which were from here) have all been very sweet.
Inches from one of the prettier, wider stretches of beach at Waikiki, this bar is romantic and chill, welcoming to all types. Â The wait staff works extra hard, accodomating the lines of tourists. Â The drinks were decent, the band was terrific but the atmosphere, heaven in paradise! Â Go to trump towers for the best cocktails then come here to enjoy the after drink hour.
Beware that the Japanese tourists have a rep scouting out the best tables and "reserving" them by shooing us non-tour group customers away. Â I say if there's no reserved sign on the table, it's all fair game! Â The staff should address this though, the only minus were the tourists getting angry about this situation.
Recommended by travel guides, how much more convenient can the Mai Tai Bar be since we were staying at the Royal Hawaiian already!
On a thursday night, the bar was filled. Â The setting is very intimate and romantic with the tables right on the beachfront and surrounded by tiki torches. Â It is so relaxing with the music playing in the background, while enjoying the company of your loved ones. Â Everyone was definitely on point when it came to saying these Mai Tais were strong. Â These were the strongest Mai Tais that I have ever had in my LIFE. Â I usually don't even order Mai Tais since they taste like juice to me but not at this bar ladies and gentlemen.. not at this particular bar. Â You will get a definite kick out of this $9 drink, and luckily with some snacks to accompany your thirst. Â The bartenders were very understanding when someone wasn't able to handle his Mai Tai and made another drink on the house.
Better yet to make my experience at this bar even more personal is that I witnessed a couple getting engaged on the beach! Oh Hawaii! How Cliche! just kidding ;)
Great view and mai tais.....
Located in the Royal Hawaiian. Â Love the ambiance and view here, right on the beach with ample seating. Â We came here at night so it was all romantical with the lights and ocean waves. Â Our waitress was attentive friendly. Â Our mai tais were pretty strong but good.
Def. a good spot to hang with your friends or hot date.
Made a return visit, so now I can provide a less-than-8-year-old perspective:
Still a fine place - will melt the panties off any woman you bring here. Â You can't walk in off the beach anymore (probably to keep guys like me out) but it's easy to bluff your way in from the front door of the Royal Hawaiian. Â Just put on your best Charlie Sheen / Keith Moon rich-bad-boy-who-looks-like-po-white-trash demeanor and keep heading south from the hotel until you get here. Â Watched a Japanese wedding while sucking down insanely expensive Mai Tais. Â But I'll give the gal credit - having watched a Chinese gal get hitched in the former "Naked I" in Boston's Combat Zone (check another of my reviews) at least this one knows how to choose a proper locale.
What's the draw here? The view & drink's of course!! The bar is located on the beach....literally steps run down to the beach so you have ocean views wherever you are sitting. Another plus? The mai tai's are actually good. I ordered the signature mai tai & tasted the scratch mai tai - both were good but the signature one was still my fave. Â I also tried the royal pinakona coco which is like a lava/pina colada drink with coffee...tasted like a milkshake in a oh so good way...
We ordered the mai tai sampler and mahi mahi grill burger w/ sea salt fries to nosh on. The waiter was cool, gave us more sashimi instead of the beef ribs...can never have too much sashimi :) The mahi mahi was very tasty, we just got rid of the bun and ate the fish...yum!!
Another bonus? After 6pm there is live Hawaiian music...
So sit back, order a drink, absorb the view, all while listening to live Hawaiian beats....a great way to spend a few hours - pure relaxation.
Many, many a night has been spent at this seaside bar. Â Many, many a drunken night.
The tourists come in waves so the service can be spotty. Â However, if I am going to drink here almost every night of my vacation I am very, very nice to them.
One time my mother in law chewed a waitress out, who wasn't even our waitress, on the second night of our trip and I had to go find her and personally apologize. Â I didn't want that reflecting on me in any way. Â
I know how hard it is to work with the public and one mean person can really get you down. Â I pretty much got on my knees and begged her to not let that reflect on my husband and I. Â She was very appreciative. Â The last thing I need is mad waitresses messing up my buzz..
The food is usually pretty good. Â They change the menu up periodically. Â This trip it was the Island Poke Trio. Â Fresh ceviche-inspired variations on: Ahi, Shrimp & Octopus. Â If Octopus are supposed to be so smart why don't they make themselves less delicious. Â This is a truly wonderful dish.
I usually stick to one drink and this trip it was the Cucumber and Pineapple Caipiroska. Â I think its a Hawaiian play on a Caipirinha. Â It was my favorite and I drank every drop.
We had a great few after noons and evening here while on our trip. Â My son love, love, loved the live music and rocked out on two occasions. Â The guitar player even gave him a shout out. Â A memory that makes me tear up every time I think of it.
We love it here.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place. Â Prices are not cheap (but it's touristy Waikiki....to be expected) but you are paying for the view and I would also say the yummy, unique cocktails you can get here. Â So we got to Waikiki and checked into the Sheraton next door but our room was not ready. Â We walked next door to Mai Tai bar (which was embarassing in itself b/c we were the only people dressed in "street" clothes walking down the beach in the middle of the afternoon...but whatcha gonna do?!) and decided to have a few drinks and enjoy the ocean breeze and amazing view. Â
I went for a mai tai and my husband got a beer. Â Mai tai was one of the best I have had. Â We had some good conversation with Susan, the bartender. Â We were watching her make some fantastic looking cocktails and were asking her about them and she was kind enough to let us taste a few sips, as she was making them. The Bahia (blueberries muddled with a few other ingredients and vodka) AND the basil chi chi were some of the best, most interesting combinations I have had. Â I ended up ordering a bahia, following my mai tai. Â We came back a few nights later JUST for the basil chi chi. Â It's fresh basil leaves muddled with the traditional chi chi mix. Â SOOOO good. Â It sounds like an odd combo, but it's seriously one of the most delicious drinks I have had.
As we were chatting with Susan, she was asking if there was a special reason why were in Hawaii. Â We mentioned it was my husband's birthday the following day and she comes out a few min later with a beautiful "happy birthday" dessert that was so yummy (and complimentary). Â A much appreciated gesture and another reason this place is a favorite.
The crowd seems to be a mix of tourists and locals, believe it or not (although I hope the locals get a discount!!). Â Good vibe, good scenery and delicious drinks. Â Check it out!
Last bar of the night on the self proclaimed bar crawl my husband and I attempted last Friday night through Waikiki. First off, we must have been a little buzzed to begin with because this was like hunt for the Red October since the new Royal Hawaiian Plaza had been constructed and truth be told, when we lived in Honolulu we rarely went down to Waikiki.
We finally get into the Royal Hawaiian and make our way to the Mai Tai Bar. We got there about an hour and a half before last call and it was the "best call" we made all night. Never had a better Mai Tai than their Royal Mai Tai. It was wonderful! Very tasteful.
Our bartender's were great. Personable and accommodating. The husband ordered the Poki sampler with his while I elected to the the special Pink Coconut Cake...both were fantastic.
Great surroundings. Nice to relax and hear the waves on the beach and kick back with a Mai Tai and a piece of cake. ;)
Do have to say, it is a tad on the pricey side. Our bill came to $68.00 and some change for 2 Mai Tai's the Poki and the teeny piece of cake. But, whatever...chalk it up to..."were on vacation."
Initial impression was the Mai Tai was weak, but they sure did creep up on you. Â We came here because this is THE famous Mai Tai bar.
Now its pricey, as EVERYTHING in Waikiki is; but our Mai Tai drinks were really good as was the service, and  its so relaxing and beautiful to look out onto the water at night. Â
Great place I will come back to.
Most things are done better at night: stargazing, sleeping and drinking cocktails. Unless you're a serious alcoholic who guzzles a quart of whiskey upon waking, you're going to agree with me on the latter. This uncontroversial statement remains solidly true at the Mai Tai Bar, tucked in the beachfront property of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, a Pepto pink building with a dilly of a maze for an entrance.
Come here during the day and you'll be rewarded with the unsightly view of tourists bronzing their backsides until they resemble leather, the relentless glare of the sun and a searing heat that is reflected off the sands. As a former goth, I say: no thank you. I am at least a polite former goth.
But come here during the evening and the entire experience is different: an unobstructed view of the beach and perhaps a catamaran or two floating up to shore, a delightful breeze tousling your hair and the opalescent glow of the moon. If you're with a large group of friends, be sure to reserve a cabana; you can pretend you're one of those fancy jerks who hangs out at nightclubs in Miami where the tables are beds, diamonds are de rigueur and everyone's wearing white mink stoles despite the heat.
It's alleged that the first Mai Tai originated here so you may want to have a brief history lesson and sample one. As I'm not a rum quaffing pirate, I only had one before switching to other concoctions. Our first night, I settled on a simple Merlot because I saw "Sideways" and don't give a flying fig. On a return visit, I enjoyed a few refreshing cucumber and pineapple caipiroskas with muddled mint. My beloved murderer had two chi, a potent combination of fresh coconut milk, vodka, pineapple juice and muddled basil. It was rich and giddy, unlike me (poor and somber). Also, it is comprised of organic ingredients, a point highlighted by our charming server who said, "Don't panic - it's organic!"
A small menu offers snacks, mostly too sweet renditions of bar food, but they will suffice if you've imbibed too much and need something substantial to fortify your belly.
From our beachfront table we watched the sun set and marveled at the majesty of nearby Diamond Head. Lights twinkled, the surf soothed and nearby, a ukelele strummed songs of tropical paradise. With grains of sand still caught between our toes, we sighed the contented breath of those who neither need nor want anything else...except maybe another caipiroska.
