I have an emotional attachment to this place because my friends and I went here for our first karaoke experience and have had many good times here since. It's about $5 per person I think, but I haven't been in a while :( sometimes it can be busy, on one occasion my group had to wait for about 5-10 minutes. The rooms are private and you can sing and dance your heart out without being bothered. The song selection is awesome and endless, so maybe having an idea/playlist beforehand would be helpful, because if you only pay for an hour, it goes by way too fast to be looking for a song the whole time. Its a great place for a big group of friends to go and have an amazing time

Had a great time at this karaoke spot. Very friendly and liberable. The music selection is fantastic and better than other karaoke places that I have visited. i would come here again if I lived closer.

I like to come here to blow off some steam by singing to my hearts content. I sing ok and even better is that I can hear some other people in other rooms sings much worse than I do! My friend drags me here when I need to get away! But honestly I suspect that my friend has a crush on the tall girl at the counter.

It's well kept and clean but sometimes I do find the song books a bit dirty. However a quick trip to the bathroom to wash my hands takes are of that.

I also would brings wipes of the microphones if you are a germ freak like I am.

This karaoke place is pretty amazing! Its a bit raunchy but it does the trick. Aside from the part that they have every possible song in English & Spanish its great to sing in a private little room. I love their wide variety of genres. At first, I was a little hesitant b/c I don't like singing infront of an audience but the private room makes it cool. It's funny that people can hear you singing as they walk down the hall but at least they can't see you. It's cool hanging out with my friends. You have to try it!

Whenever I come here, this place always has a room open.  The service is courteous and they want you and your group to have a great time.  They sell snacks and drinks at the front (no alcohol), but they let you bring in your own.

They have a great selection of English songs and update their books to keep up with the mainstream music.

Mics and speakers work fine, but I do wish they added different lights or a disco ball in the room.

Stop by this place if you're in the area and looking for a fun place after some dinner and drinks.

This is the main Karaoke spot for myself and friends. The song selection is unlike any other Karaoke spot I've been to. The staff is polite and they offer drinks of the non-alcoholic variety. They need to step up their game and get a liquor license because some may need that "liquid courage" to sing, even if it's private.

I'd rather do karaoke here than anywhere else, point blank. The only thing that could be better is if a little restaurant/bar was attached so you could eat properly but that's just crazy talk.

Some people absolutely have to have alcohol to sing or want to play up a crowd. For such people, karaoke box style is not for you! If you want to actually get a chance at songs you like rather than sitting all night listening to drunk people do songs you hate while you compromise on the song choice you're waiting for, then karaoke box style is for you! But, if you love performing in front of people, Max is a great place to try out new songs or rehearse and perfect songs.

Max Karaoke has in the past year or so upgraded their system so if you went during the time of the "red books" then you need to go back. Now it's the white/blue books and they have a different selection. (This is the Japanese system.) But, you don't even need the books anymore since they have a digital remote with a screen to make song selections, searches, etc.

For the non-Japanese system, they have several languages but I've only tried Spanish and English. The Japanese system also has some songs in English, Chinese, etc. Look in the foreign language section of the book or digital remote (can switch to English menu). Overall, I've never seen a better selection of songs in any language.

Happy hour is my favorite time because it's cheap. $4 or $5 per hour per person. Other times (at night) are more pricey and I'm usually out at karaoke bars at that point. You can bring in food, flat $1 charge, no alcohol. They have some drinks and snack foods for sale but I'd never order any of their food. The ventilation system unfortunately could be better at this location as you can smell the people on cigarette break. Bathrooms are clean.

They have bigger rooms for larger parties and even a kotatsu room for the very Japanese. (sit on the floor with a table that has a heater) Never used that room so don't know if the kotatsu works.

Caution: the 2 karaoke systems have 2 different remotes and they do not play with each other. You can only use one at a time. You can have songs in the queue but only in one system because one system overrides the other. Beware of that.

My FIRST and ONLY place I go for Karaoke.

I like singing. And sometimes karaoke bars aren't the thing for me. Because How can you channel your inner Beyonce without having a room all to yourself. Just saying. On a serious note, it really is a great place. Firstly, they have Happy Hour before 8 PM for just $5 an hour. Perfect when you just want your karaoke fix. What I really love about this place is that they have NEW songs every month. I'm not talking just newly updated songs, but I'm talking songs that you hear on the radio right now are already in their system! It's crazy. So, if you like a song on the radio and want to sing it out, head to Max.

The staff is very friendly and they accomodate large party groups. I think you get a party room. I like the intimate setting because you don't have to sing over outside noise like you would at a karaoke bar. Granted, I've never been to a karaoke bar, I can imagine having to sing over all the people getting wasted and the sound of people talking. You get a room for your entire party and you can change the volume to fit your needs. I like that.

You input songs you want by simply using the wireless keypad to enter the song numbers corresponding to the books (they have a lot). Plus, if you're like me, they have an extended collection of musicals. I like to channel my inner Broadway here.

Probably my only complaint is the faint smell of cigarettes. It can kind of get a little strong at times, but not too bad. Bring some Febreeze or something if you don't like that smell. Other than that, it's a great place for Karaoke and in fact, I feel like singing right now, I just might head over there soon. I'm sure they've got some new songs.

Friendly Staff. GREAT prices. Great experience.

Hands down: I love the happy hour here!! $4/person before 8pm is just amazing! You can't get that kind of deal anywhere else!

ALSO the song selections are amazing!! They changed from DAM karaoke system to Joysound - which has a greater selection. Now you songs can be inputted with a mini touch screen...! How high-tech is that? Now I can sing Vocaloid songs ^_^

...now with the Otaku-ness pushed Aside....

The English songs are still used by Champion Karaoke which I don't really like because it deletes any Japanese song that is chosen by the Joysound Machine even during the middle of the song. -_- So best way is to find English songs in the Joysound mini touch screen controller so you can sing without getting interrupted.

Anyhow hope you enjoy this place! I love it...although I feel embarrassed most of the time b/c I only sing Anime Songs. I'm sure people peek through my window because of the geekyness heard from outside LOL

My favorite karaoke joint. Hands down, been coming here for years, & I'm a loyal customer. The song selection is super impressive, a lot of Japanese & English songs, it's hard not to find a song you want to sing. You can sneak in booze & they won't care, just clean up & take your trash with you.

It isn't noreban, sorry, they don't have Korean songs & serve you soju all night. If that's what you need then trek up to K-town, but for the area, this is the BEST!

My all time favorite place to karaoke at!

I always come during happy hours 1pm-8pm.
Only $4/per person for an hour on weekdays and $5 on weekends which I think is pretty cheap and affordable.

Workers are really nice here and they seems to have done a little renovation.
They changed the karaoke system from Dam to JoySound, new touch screen remotes, painted the rooms blue, put in new flat screen TVs and it definitely looks much neater than it used to!

Another reason why I really love this place is because they have all the latest songs in their system!

I usually sing Japanese songs but they're English songs are pretty up-to-date.
They also have Korean, Chinese and Spanish songs too :D

    Sound system is pretty decent.
They don't have disco lights and tambourines like most Korean karaoke places do but I'm alright with that.

So much nicer than the Sawtelle and DTLA locations (Torrance is the only location with flat screen TVs). Pick up some booze and snacks at Ralph's, and you're good to rock out for at least 3 hours! Of course the sound system could be improved, and the decor is still lacking compared to Ktown NRBs, but the awesome song selection trumps any cons.

I love you MAX, but what's up with that one tatami room with the blankets?  It looks mad shady. Also please add the following songs, and I will name my firstborn after you, I swear!

    Bic Runga - Sway
When in Rome - The Promise

To all the other karaoke sluts out there, make sure to grab a stamp card (i.e. boba).

Wow, what a great place! Yes, it's a bit expensive (esp. weekend nights), but it's so worth it!

Get a room w/ friends, smuggle in a couple bottles of liquor, maybe even a 12-pack of beer (mission impossible style), and you got a recipe for good times right there!

Song selection is great! They have THE BEST selection of English songs I've ever seen! They have songs by artists like: She Wants Revenge, Interpol, Gorillaz, Weezer, Harvey Danger, Nas, Common, Jurassic 5, etc. Oh yeah, they got a TON of songs you'd never think would be there! Plus a whole book of NEW songs! They even have spanish, chinese and korean songs, though I've never checked out what they got!

Sound system is fine, rooms are clean, staff are pretty chill..

Wanna sing, or drink and sing, or have a drunken sing-a-long in a room with your friends instead of in a bar full of strangers? Then this is probably your kind of place!

Close to 405 and 110, right next to some great Japanese izakayas too (musha, torihei).

HAPPY HOUR. END OF STORY. $4 per person per hour on weekdays, $5 on weekends. I think it's before 7 pm.

That would earn at least 4 stars...

    BUT

    1. The sound quality is crappy.
    2. I honestly don't know any Japanese, so unless I go with someone Japanese I don't know what the heck to press to do what function on their touch-screen remotes.
    3. The place itself is old as well.
    4. The karaoke tracks aren't amazing.
    5. Credit card charge is minimum $10... which sucks when neither one of you have cash and you go during happy hour on a weekday...

So it's just okay. But I will continue going there because of their happy hour!

Good song choices, but this place really needs a renovation.  Came here after eating and drinking next door at Musha and even though I had my beer goggles on, the rooms still looked super ghetto.  I also didn't like that the colorful disco lights didn't work... actually, I take that back, I'm not even sure if the rooms had disco lights... but if they did, they didn't work which was upsetting. How else am I going to be a STAR?!

This place has TONS of songs.  So many songs that when you're drunk, you won't even be able to find the song you're looking for because the selection is so extensive and there are so many damn books, categories and languages. They have good song selection though and alot of popular, Top 100 hits which is great. .

You can also BYOB which is nice.  The price is higher than Ktown (on the weekends) but it's the only karaoke place in the area that has private rooms, so it's worth it.

We'll definitely be back to sing our hearts out!

I kind of figured that Japanese karaoke joints would have a little more class than some of their shady Korean counterparts.  Not to hate on my own kind, but Korean businesses are masterful at getting away with questionable practices.  I mean I once went to a Korean karaoke that served alcohol under the table, then took back our plastic cups and redistributed them at random when we ordered refills.

Max isn't quite at that level, but I do think it's strange that the signs on the walls say no alcohol allowed, while you can still buy and bring in alcohol (or food) for a $1 per capita fee.  Oh well.  Beats dead sober karaoke.  I came to Max with several co-workers after an end-of-year dinner at Musha, and we had a good time.  A few of us took a detour to 7-Eleven to buy a twelve-pack of Coronas, and they probably helped.

We got a big room with a lot of seating, and it was pretty comfortable, if a little bit shabby.  I doubt that the place has seen much renovation in the last few decades, but it served its purpose.  The karaoke set-up, though, bothered me.  My co-workers are mostly Japanese, and our group alternated pretty frequently between Japanese and English songs.  It turns out that any time you input a Japanese song, it skips the line and overrides all English songs.  If you happen to be bleating the lyrics to Material Girl when someone else forgets this bizarre system, you may be left doing so without a soundtrack.  We figured this out fast, but it was still very inconvenient.  We couldn't build a queue that included Japanese and English songs - it was essentially impossible to do so.

The song selection was robust, though kind of hard to sort through.  Like, I don't actually believe Say It Ain't So wasn't in the system, but I couldn't find it anywhere it should have been.  There were plenty of English songs, as well as Japanese and Korean, and if we'd done every song everyone thought of, we would have been there for days.  That is, I suppose, a very good thing.  The video accompanying the songs was funny and weird, though this is true at almost any karaoke.

We ended up having a good time.  I got to sing Mr. Roboto with a Japanese co-worker who grew up with non-Asian classmates who called him Mr. Roboto.  It may have brought up some bad memories for him, but it was fun karaoke.  We stayed for a while, and I learned that I have some vocally talented and entertaining co-workers.  We stayed for a few hours, and ended up coughing up about $25 a head.  The rate for the room was something like $57 an hour, which was kind of outrageous considering the state of the place.  Regardless, it was a fun night, and I wouldn't object to coming again.  I would, though, inquire first about the other karaoke options in the area.

I'm karaoke'd out. Seriously. Towards the end there, we were all passing the book between each other -

    NO, you sing.

Every once in a while, your heart just has to belt out a few songs with friends. More so when your heart has had a few to drink.

Did I mention this place is ISN't NOT BYOB? Meaning that they're not allowed to tell you that this this is BYOB, in fact, they tell you many times that this is NOT BYOB. and that there are many stiff penalties for BYOB'ing. I'm not going to tell you that it's BYOB, but I will tell you that it isn't not BYOB, because following the rules of logical progression, that would be a double negative, and we all know those equal very negative (in spanish), so in fact you could be subject to blindly large fines if you are caught BYOBing in a non-BYOB establishment.

I'm glad you're following my logic.

Happy hour 1-8pm, go then, cheaper.

Today was my first karaoke studio experience and I'm glad I chose to spend it here. Came here because it was a friend's birthday. The first thing I thought when I walked inside there. "Ghetto.." The place does need some refurbishing but the look doesn't take away from the fact that they have a WIDE song selection. I was sort of fascinated of the process of choosing a song to sing to. Look up the keycode of the song (in the many books and binders of songs provided)), punch in the numbers on the keypad, the song with on-screen lyrics will play on the flatscreen shortly. :)
I do wish the Korean/Japanese songbooks would be translated though.
I'm glad for the HAPPY HOUR from 1pm to 8pm Mon-Thurs. Definitely would return to this place a second time just to have a good time with friends, singing badly to all our favorite songs.

5 stars for absolutely best song selection out of any karaoke place ever. Also for the cheap happy hour prices and private rooms.
I really don't care if the rooms aren't the ritz as long as the speakers work and the songs don't lag.

Honestly, Max is probably one of the best song carrying karaoke places around here. I've tried others, but when it comes to good Japanese AND English selection (Idk about other languages but my Taiwanese friend has no problemo finding good songs when we're singing Japanese songs and she wants to sing Chinese)

Yes, it is a seperate machine for the English only one and the Japanese/Chinese/Korean/Filipino/etc.etc. one. (YES they have filipino songs WUT) so it is pretty frustrating waiting for half of your friends to finish singing all of their English songs so your side can sing Japanese songs. (If you can't compromise or your friends don't know how to share, it might be better to go with a group of the same language culture /: It's not fun for that one white person who can't sing Japanese in a group of Japanese kids who just want to belt out JPOP. No racial)

Don't go there expecting a nicely lit room with the karaoke atmosphere you'd find in karaoke places IN Japan or Korea or etc. etc. This place is really just about the singing rather than the atmosphere or service or food. If you want to indulge in the atmosphere rather than the singing itself, you might want to try Korean places (sure, you're skimping out on the latest Lady Gaga, but at least you get some decent fried chicken and a mike stand for the full karaoke rock out sesh!)

If you're going there to get a full worth of your buck and over 2-3hrs, weekdays during the 1-8 happy hour for $4/hr or even the weekends 1-8 $5/hr is better for you. If you're going there for only an hr or so with a group of friends with nothing to do after dinner or something, then it WILL get pretty costly, BEWARE. It might be better to just go to Muse on Sepulveda (I think) since they charge by ROOM not by person.

I don't get why it says "Good for Dancing" O.O

As far as I know, the windows are totally clear and the place is pretty brightly lit, so people can totally stare at you as they walk by and you're dancing to KPOP while singing..... (personal experience btw) Maybe not so much at night, but still it's pretty much open space so unless you dim down all the lights in the room, (which is still pretty see-through) you're available for anyone's viewing pleasure.

Don't go on a weekend as it can be twice as expensive as the week or during HH times.  Also, they had some 2-4-1 "Duo" special when I was there on a Thurs, but it is only applicable if you have 2 people (so no it doesn't work like 4 out of 8 are free). Tricky!

I like this place a lot because they have a good selection of songs and don't really get mad at you for anything.  You can sing anything from Backstreet Boys to Taking Back Sunday .  It was nice that I could barely hear people in the other rooms and they have a huge room in the back for larger groups.

The annoying thing is that they have two remotes - for English songs and Japanese/Korean ones.  Sometimes they "cross wires" and cancel the current song while you are singing!  Other than that this place is awesome.

P.S. At the beginning they ask you for your ID to hold a room.  Note that if you want drinks- they will put sodas they put it on a tray....but that stuff ain't complimentary, pay attention!

I used to really like Max and still think their happy hour is pretty decent. However, now that I'm aware of their subpar MIDI-sounding audio, I'm not particularly fond of it anymore.

The price is still pretty good if in small groups, but I would definitely not come here if it weren't for being the only place I know of in Southern California with good Japanese song selection. Even so, as I mentioned earlier, it straight up sounds like MIDIs so I don't think I'll be going out of my way anymore.

Also, considering I've been coming here since 2001, you would think their facilities would get better somehow... but nope! It's still the same rundown walls with tarnished furniture. The systems are still the same as well, where it's two separate ones for English songs and Japanese songs.

I came here a while back with 7 other friends for my friend's birthday.  WHAT A DISASTER (but in a "I had such a great time" way)!!

They had almost every song I could think of.  Earth Wind and Fire?  yup.  Third Eye Blind?  yup.  Metallica? of course.  How about the Family Matters theme song?? YES.  Did you know there was a second verse to that song??  I sure as hell didn't, BUT MAX KARAOKE DID!!

Have you ever gotten with 7 other of your guy friends and then tried to sing Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen?  Well this is the place to try it.  The room is like a death chamber though.  No fans, no ventilation, plus 7 drunk dudes = one sweaty night.  People were dripping so much, that I swore we just performed our own concert.  I get that this is probably for sound proofing purposes, but when I stepped all the way outside to get some air, I could still hear all the singing/screaming from our room, with the door closed - so what's the point???

Only complaint?  There seems to be two systems, for japanese and american songs.  It can get confusing if a japanese song gets programmed and the system switches over.  Those american songs will continued to be played on the other system, while your one mexican friend, who wishes he was japanese more than anything, botches japanese song after japanese song.

PS: I stumbled across a room that had sleeping bags and sheets laid out.  Is Karaoke the ONLY service they offer here?!?!  ;))))))))))))))))))))

I love Max, I find myself coming here everytime I'm in the Torrance area.

I live in K-town but have been depserately searching a good no frills sorta place to bring friends and belch out a few tunes.

Although k-town has better looking karaoke rooms, Max always seems to have a better song selection than any other place I've been too.

Eminem 8 mile soundtrack? B.O.B with Bruno Mars? D12 Purple hills??

Their rap selection is outstanding. I've found the most obscure songs here from my 90's childhood and everytime I come back it's always like rediscovering music that I've forgotten over the years.

2 people, 1 hour costs us $18 bucks. This was at like 2am on a Thursday night.

I give this place 4+ stars. We came here after the July 4th LA Galaxy game.  We may have overexerted our vocal cords from chanting, but we sang til 4 in the morning anyways, because we're hardcore like that.

    I'll start with criticisms:
    - not so much a negative, but they charge a dollar for any guest bringing their own good or drink
    - the room's rate goes up by 10% starting 4am.  They charge by the minute anyways and it's only an increase to time stayed after 4
    - My friend and I had a really tough time finding Chinese songs we wanted in Chinese. For Chinese songs, they had one that was smaller but easier to browse, and the other catalog was thicker yet was sorted solely by the song title's character length.  And not even by stroke order within each title-length section.  It was exasperating  : K  Other than that I was somewhat satisfied with the Chinese catalog too, though it would definitely not be my first choice for doing Chinese karaokeing

    Pros:
    - the thing I liked most was they had an excellent song selection in English, from oldies to 80s and today's hits.
    - the rooms are charged by the minute (rather than 15-minute increments)
    - from our mics to the couch felt pretty new and clean. no loose mic wires to contend with here, and no raggedy or abused equipment spotted
    - They stamped the back of their card and when I've accrued 10 stamps I can redeem something ... I didn't see what that is, but I do know we got 4 stamps out of this visit, yes!

So I would like to start by saying I can't sing for sh*t.  Maybe it's because I'm deaf in one ear (truly, NOT a joke), but probably moreso because before I became half deaf I was already 100% tone-deaf.  My poor mother... I still have memories of her lamenting the fact that she has the only Chinese kid in the world who couldn't play piano straight out of the womb.

ANYWAYS... given my craptastic, not-unlike-a-constipated-frog-croaking singing voice, I automatically give every karaoke studio props for putting up with it for more than an hour. Like, that's worth at least 2 stars from me already.

Even though Max Karaoke looked a bit scruffy and ghettoFOBulous on the outside, once we were in (they gave us a room after 15 minutes even though they originally projected 40), they gave us a nice, sizeable room with a high ceiling (THANK GOD since those karaoke rooms get so damn hot and stuffy) and yes... YES... NO ANNOYING DISCO BALL (karaoke afficianados know exactly what I'm talking about).  The equipment was a bit more confusing... apparently we needed two different sets of equipment - one for Japanese songs (for which none of us knew Japanese songs) and one for every other language's songs.  Sent a tech retard like me into a tailspin... @_@

However, the song selection made up for all the user-friendliness that the equipment was lacking.  I was totally floored to see so many recent hits from relatively new bands, i.e. Cage the Elephant, and some of the real oldies but goodies... I'd tell you what they were but I think I was too drunk to remember...

On that note... that's why there's no pics... what happens in the karaorgy... uh..... karaoke... studios stays in the karaoke studios.

Prices... 5 of us sang out hearts out until 4...or maybe 5... in the AM.  Yes they did start charging an extra 10% after 3 am, but it really wasn't TOO bad... the total damage for the night for all of us was about $140.  But damn did we have fun...what a way to end July 4th!!!

Parking: An ample lot right outside the studio (it's in a complex right at the corner of Western and Carson).  Not that some of us should be driving after a drunken karaoke session...

This place is pretty fun. Came here a couple of times for friend's birthdays and what not. They should definitely make the rooms soundproof though. Across from our room were these 12 year old beasts screaming their lungs out and laughing uncontrollably to every song. They also kept looking through our door and peeking at us, then laughing. VERY annoying haha. But, one of the mom's gave us pizza and cake, which was nice :)

Max has good songs to sing a long too, nice place, nothing really to complain about.

When we had to pay, they made a mistake and was about to make us pay like 50 dollars more for every person. So..my friend and I busted out our Japanese skills and they were like, "Oh so sorry, our mistake..here's your real bill" and it was cheaper than expected :)
    Go us!

My sister dragged me here after a show we had seen nearby. Private karaoke room isnt that bad afterall. But..$28/hr on a Friday night (after 8pm) for 2 ppl was quite pricey. A good selection of songs...I liked Owl City's Fireflies!  My best hit all night.

They have a happy hour which is like 18/hr. The prices depend on # of ppl .   1-8pm $5 deal that someone mentioned, when does that occur?

I wished I lived here. Seriously. Or at least I wished they allowed people to rent their rooms overnight.

I can imagine myself (alllllll by myself), singing and singing..and singing..and singing 'til there was no more life in me. This place is perfect for some realllll good fun. Especially when your friends are super drunk & singing things like the Monster Mash to anything by the Backstreet Boys to rapping songs by 50 Cent or Snoop Dogg to 80s songs. SOOOOOOOO much fun. You can't be shy when you come here because everyone will hear you, even people in other rooms, and I don't mind that because it's all for fun!!! It's quite entertaining seeing people get down in those other rooms.Their selection of songs are up to date, I absolutely love it. They have a bunch of books! And best of all, they're cheap (you pay by how many hours you plan to stay) & open late!

Too bad they don't allow alcohol though because all my friends would love that (I don't really drink) & would make their experience so much better. Just drink beforehand!

Oh man, I don't make it out to this Max Karaoke usually, but it really is fantastic for two main reasons. First off, DAM. The Japanese karaoke selection is awesome. I just don't feel like I've done karaoke if I can't sing "Airman ga Taosenai." But they have it!

Second... Hot staff. Every time I come, they seem to have found even more bomb ass JP chicks. Why does the one in Sawtelle always have these dudes?!?! Seriously, get the chicks working at this one out to the Sawtelle location, please!

In anycase, a good time had by all. Lack of alcohol will always makes them lose that one star though.

Although the rooms look a bit seedy, like there could be other things going on here ;) this is such a fun place to sing. The happy hour is the deal! 4 bucks from 1pm to 8pm M-Th and on weekends it's 5 bucks. The songs are pretty darn new. They had Lady Gaga, Blame It, Soulja Boy, Lil Wayne, Kings of Leon, and all the oldies you can sing. They have some big rooms for groups that are really big.

    * Tip: I would smuggle in drinks or food because it is very expense to buy stuff here. I left my diet coke outside on the curb and just went outside to drink it when I got thirsty.

Damn good fun time. Small unassuming on the outside, never knew it was there for years. We went on A Friday night for the Happy Hour. 5 bucks an hour, you can't beat that. Music selection is GREAT. I checked out the website first, and found more than 50 songs in my favorite genre. SWEET. The rooms are reasonably comfortable, and good sound. Two mikes, a couch, and a TV. Simple. Wish I had thought of it ;)
It is mostly catered to Japanese, but like I said, there are LOTS of popular English titles. I had fun doing Alice Cooper, Megadeth, Pearl Jam, and Kiss.
Downside- No alcohol allowed; I see the safety concerns, so be cool about it, wink-wink, nudge-nudge...

Oh, excuse me!  I just spaced out and thought I was back at MAX karaoke, apparently singing a cross between the sound of music and metallica.  :X

I am the BIGGEST FAN OF KARAOKE EVER~!!!~!!  And MAX karaoke feeds my addiction like no other with it's blessed happy hour.  Who can beat $4 an hour on weekdays and $5 an hour weekends (from 1-8, of course)???  You can't!  It's not possible~!!!  Unless you have been favored by the gods and a fully stocked and equipped karaoke machine has fallen out of the sky and landed gently in your living room where it is miraculously hooked up to your 65" lcd television, complete with theater-like sound system, plush couches, and sound-proof walls so you can wail to your heart's content without scaring the neighbors or mistakenly starting an air-raid drill.

I wish I lived here.  And at $4 an hour, it's cheaper than rent.  Maybe I will...yes, the couches are ripped and, if you're lucky, patched with tape, the air conditioning doesn't always work, and I was once plagued by a faulty key pad on which my fingers tirelessly worked to punch in songs until I had to put the smack down on the girl working that particular day.  But it's still far and away one of the best places on this planet we call Earth.

Three bucks an hour before 8 on the weekdays.  I love this place.

I've come to realize that less is more.  Singing with a big group means no mic time.  Even three's a crowd.

Max Karaoke is synonymous with Torrance night life. It's your standard Japanese-owned private rooms only karaoke place. Know not a word of Japanese? Fear not! The English selection is by far one of the biggest I've seen, this side of the 405. If you heard it on the radio today, there's a good chance it's already on the song list.

Also make note, the happy hour here is the longest I've ever come across -- 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. $5 per person! Not bad. The only thing I have against this place is when it's not happy hour. When it's not happy hour, this place is one of the priciest karaoke joints I've ever been to.

If I could read Japanese, and if the loudspeakers could serve up more bump in the lower register, I'd give this place 5 stars.  We did treat ourselves to an extra hour though for a total of 3 hours of sappy love-songs and rap hits.  I was surprised to see how much of Snoop Dogg's raps I knew but I did get a good helping of SAP from REO Speedwagon, Air Supply, and All 4 One.

Their system is awesome.  It's the Japanese DAM system that has a good collection of 80s, 90s, and current hits.  They even update the song list each month so don't be surprised if the song you find yourself singing along the radio while driving on the 405 is available.

"A whole new worrrrrlllddddd.  A new fantastic point of viewwwwwwwwww"

Ok, Ok, I'm not at Max's anymore, time to heal the voice for this weekend.

Sometimes I feel like going to karaoke by myself, just so I can sing my heart out. This is where I always go when I'm in the singing mood!

During week day happy hour, their price is soooo cheap compared to other karaoke places. It's less than $5/hour per person, so it's very affordable even if you want to go karaoke alone.

Since their Japanese karaoke system is DAM, they usually have the most up-to-date songs. Sometimes they don't have the updated list available, but you can search the songs on DAM's web site prior to going there, and they will already be in the system.

This place only accepts credit card when the cost exceeds $10. So if you go there alone and just sings 1 hour, you will have to pay in cash.

Night life in Torrance = Karaoke. But it's a really kick ass time with Yelpers. I would come alone but that's emo.

Max Studios is awesome. Cute japanese employees. Boys. I noticed that a lot of people eat at Musha's and Matsui and roll over here. So there's a really really cute crowd. We stayed for 2 hours till 2 AM (they closed at 3). It came out to be $80ish for 6 of us. Not too bad. It's cheaper during happy hour. They have a rule that you need to state how many hours you are going to stay there. You can overestimate and say 3 but only use two and not get charged but you can't say 2 and then try to stay 3. Does that make sense?

The rooms are kinda small. It fit 6 of us well but I wouldn't try to sardine anyone else in. They have a GREAT selection of songs.. very current and they even have a whole book of japanese/korean/chinese songs too.

Regarding the outside food issue, I read the sign when I left. You CAN bring in outside food but it's an additional $1 each. The food they have there is about .50 cents to $1 more than the store but if you're really hungry.. it's not like it's airport prices or anything.

As far as our selection goes:

Spice Girls is TOTALLY Rick's song.

Kevin's rendition of Eminem's Lose Yourself is ummm. interesting.

    Tim does a great Roxanne.

Yuko can really sing yo! We make a good team. She makes me sound halfway normal. Britney Spears bitches.

Baro. More Than Words. Made us cry.

So I heard that a new Max Studio opened on Alameda. It's $15 for All You Can Sing. AYCS yo! Kick ass. We have AYCD, AYCD, AYCS.. what's next?

"Y.M.C.A......Last Dance..last chance for loooove.......seeeeecret lovers..yeah that's what we are....." Haha and you'll hear other cheesy songs comes out of this place =). This is the place where almost everyone comes out of their shell haha!

Max Karaoke Studio is a little Japanese karaoke place that has little private rooms and one large private room for parties of 25 or more. My friends and I have rented the large private room twice and it's been loads of fun. They have a little stage for the singers and some couches for the audience.

PROS: They will allow you to bring in food and drinks for an extra fee.
They have a hugh song selection
Their large private room is large enough that you can throw your own mini dance party!

CONS: The fees per person add up. We were here for five hours and we ended up with a bill of over $300!
No air conditioning...it can get really hot in there (especially if you're singing and dancing with a whole bunch of people)

If it wasn't for the high fee, I'd give it five stars. My friends and I have always had a blast here!

Ok enough of this review...time for me to start singing again....."Y...M..C..A...."
