So, having worked as a server, I can tell you that there are people that look at food servers with disdain and contempt and will never tip well and will always be rude. They are jack****'s and I am not one of those. So I am loathe to write a review that may hurt business for Meconi's, but this food was - simply put - bad.
The bartender was nice, the beer was Manny's - (so good) and the ham sandwich with marbled rye had stale bread and was profoundly tasteless. I should have complained but I did not - I was the only one there on a Saturday (11am) and I did not want get into the whole thing.
So, bad food, nice bartender, If I go again, I will steer clear of the ham sandwich and so should you.
We stopped there while on the way to the theater  - and looked forward to a "bar friendly place"  -  where they welcome you.   I remember when bar food was plentiful and good.   Not lower quality.
The service was not friendly at all and the roast beef (French Dip) Â and Ruben used low quality meat. Â Â The place was not busy for a Saturday evening but after eating the food and experiencing the service - I can see why.
There are good places to eat in Tacoma - but this is not one.
Most of the stars are for the bartender, she was super friendly.
I had the club sammy, It was pretty good. Good lettuce. I don't recommend the garlic fries, they are a bit too salty and covered in powdery garlic stuff.
The drinks are see through, so what out what you order or you will be stumbling out like we were.
Kinda pricey, but nothing if you are used to dt seattle prices.
We came in last night after seeing them mentioned in the paper, something about an awesome italian sandwich... sign me up!
The bar itself is nice, fairly spacious, and has patio seating, which is a win win for me. Tv's for game's, but they aren't too in your face. Has anyone spotted justin bieber there? ;)
The sandwiches we ok. We got the italian, and the combo, they were good, but just an avg deli sandwich. Nothing spectacular about them. The winner was the parm fries, YUM!
Service was friendly and helpful.
Surprisingly not packed at 7:30 on a Saturday night! Very cute place, better service than I would expect for a pub, they live up to the eatery portion of their name. We just had some mojitos and bruschetta before we continued bar-hopping down the street but really enjoyed the food/service/drinks here, we'll be back!
Review Source:Great place, best service! Â Food not so much - but hey it's pub food. Â The clam chowder would be so good if it was hot! Â (mine was lukewarm and went to cold quickly, must have been nuked and I had to ask again for the bread that was supposed to come with it) the salad had brown tinged bib lettuce, I ate two bites and left it. Â My daughter's sliders were really great! The artichoke dip was really good too. The service from Alysha is what will keep me coming back if she works there regularly. Â She was on "loan" from somewhere else and it was the best happy hour service ever. Â She was attentive, without being intrusive, friendly, always smiling and helpful. Â We over tipped because of her service, not because of the food issues. Â We'll be back!
Review Source:Let me start with that it has been about six months since i have been here and have had an enjoyable time. Â Went in for lunch during a work week and was carded...
We ordered lunch and that is when the waitress asked for ID?? Â One of the people in our group didn't have theirs on them and we get the boot? Â
So we went to The Matador instead, apparently they
We stopped in here one night because we were looking for a happy hour after the 6 pm cut off for most restaurants and they have nightly specials.
We were pleasantly surprised. Â Their staff is amazingly friendly and the place is extremely easy going.
We had the fish and chips, not the greatest in the world but for $5 bucks? I will take it!
Good beer selection as well!
Will go back.
My 3rd visit to Meconi's and I must say that I am fan.
Good drinks, yummy food and the establishment is A-OK.
Being next door to the Matador, this place is often over looked but I can easily see the crowd spilling over to this spot as they have ample seating. 2 rooms with a backroom that has a pool table, darts and even air hockey:) It's all about the setting and crowds these days, I know, BUT sometimes as long as your with your "peoples," it's gonna be a good night, regardless!
The bartender, William, I think they call him "DUB," made some hardcore drinks for us, and I can't remember our server but she did a fantabulous job making sure we were set. We had the fried zucchini which was YUM and the chicken nachos that came out on a HUGE plate:)
I highly recommend this place for an all around good time.
The happy hour is a pretty good deal, but I wouldn't want to pay full price here.
It is a standard bar, with two TVs. Not a place to go to watch The Game, but a place to enjoy a game in the background.
The waitress let us do little samples before selecting a beer. There was only one waitress for the entire place, but she seemed pretty good at hustling and bringing good service to the whole place. I liked the fried zucchini.
Good place to hang out with your friends, but nothing special. Â And I probably won't go back because of their so-so food. Â If you're like me who enjoys stuff to munch on as well as drinks, you may want to consider going to somewhere else like Matador in the same neighborhood.
The most recent visit was about a few weeks ago. Â I ordered pasta with grilled shrimp. Â It was boiled, not grilled. Â And probably previously frozen. Â Extra $2.50 for 4 boiled shrimp...not worth it...maybe it's their way of saying just order drinks and fried food.
Not a bad place for lunch downtown. Â I forgot what I had, but it was decent and came with a salad. Â The interior of the place was well maintained and had a bunch of historic Tacoma photos. Â However, it was also modern in that there were plenty of HD TVs on the wall showing the World Cup.
Review Source:Went here last Saturday. Â 1st the good: Â the bar has personality. Â The service was excellent. Â It was packed. Â That made it fun. Â
We got there early to have dinner while waiting for friends to show. Â That's where it loses a star. Â The food is only ok. Â As average as average gets. Â Fortunately it's not expensive, so that makes it tolerable. Â Although, if you're thrilled by a visit to Red Robin, you'll probably love the food here.
My only other gripe is... sometimes the music is just plain horrible. Â I've been here for happy hour, too, and they played every single annoying overplayed 80's song ever made. Â From Glenn Frye to Genesis to Billy Ocean. Â It made me angry and I had to get the hell out of there! Â I'm pretty sure I'm still suffering from PTSD due to it.
But all in all, for a average priced place it's pretty ok for Tacoma...
Went to this place earlier today. Â Nice ambiance. Â Clean. Â Friendly service.
Has a pool table in the back, although, not sure what else as I haven't been there. Â A couple TV's, not huge screen tv. Â Probably not your ideal place to watch a game, but a decent selection of tap beers, probably about 10. Â Worth checking out.
Meconi's has a classic pub-like environment in a storefront. Its medium sized menu includes burgers, salads, sandwiches, pizzas and a good range of other appetizers and entrees.
The actual food was great value for money, and enjoyable without being over-complex. My Rib Eye was tender and juicy. My wife's pasta was flavourful. The wings I had as appetizers were well-prepared and tasty. Portion sizes were large but not huge.
We dined here before seeing a show at the Pantages. The restaurant is a short walk from the theatres, which is great. We had relatively short time before the theatre, but food arrived promptly and service was responsive and efficient. There was easy street and lot parking nearby, at least on Saturday night.
Overall a - nice basic pub experience; nothing outstanding, nothing to complain about.
I dropped in here for lunch with my mother and we were the only people eating during the entire time we were here. Â Thank goodness this place is mostly a bar because the food was bland and uncreative. Â Hot subs seem to be there thing and I had an Italian sausage one. Â It was good but by no means anything that I couldn't have made just as well at home. Â The best thing was the garlic fries which smelled great and weren't greasy at all but had a nice healthy coating of garlic and parmesan. Â The service was great but then again we were the only ones in the joint.
Bottom line: Â Thank goodness this place is a bar because the food is nothing special.
My girlfriend and I came here for dinner after a gym workout. Everyplace else downtown seemed closed, except for the Matador and the Indian buffet place on the corner.
Meconi's was everything you want in a perfect, average pub: menu has standard sandwiches, salads, Italian subs, burgers, sandwiches, and pizzas. We shared the Italian sub and the Reuben sandwich. The Italian sub was decent: large, good Italian capiccola and salami -- my only complaint about it  is the bread, which was like a white sponge cake. The Reuben satisfied: so many places up here in the Northwest seem to make their Reubens with pastrami, instead of the traditional corned beef.
(Now don't get me wrong: I'm a Jew-boy, and love my pastrami, but it just does not belong on a Reuben. Call it something else if you need to, guys!)
So the food was good, the beer was good -- there were about 16 beers on tap and a decent-looking bar selection from I could tell, and a specialty drink menu that sounded interesting, even though many of their special drinks were just renamed and gussied-up versions of classics. And here I must take exception to the previous reviewer, Ted: I thought they had a decent selection of microbrews, including Alaskan Amber, Manny's Pale Ale, and Mac & Jack's IPA.
All in all a solid place. Good food, good beer, friendly, prompt service. And lots of big HDTVs for game-watching, if you're into that.
Oh, and they have a nice happy hour from 3 to 6 pm, with a rotating daily food special as well. Although everything is fairly average and standard fare, it was executed so well I had to give it 4 stars.
I stopped in for an early afternoon lunch and the place was all but dead, sad for a downtown establishment on a weekday.
In any case, as a restaurant, I'd give this place 4 stars -- the service was quick and the food was quite decent. Â The chicken sandwich was a bit above average and it came with a really generous portion of above average fries.
As a bar, I'd probably never go back to the place. Â Don't get me wrong, it was clean and the people were nice, but when you brag about a selection of microbrews on tap and have, maybe 2 local brews that barely count as "micro", that just doesn't make sense.
