This artisan pizza is incredibly tasty. Â There are lots of different toppings you can order, as well as their own specialty pizzas. Â The crust is different from other pizza establishments - and I just love it! Â It's a little thicker and chewier, but it works. Â Don't get me wrong - I enjoy a good thin and crispy crust pizza...but it's more than just the texture. Â The crust's flavor is unique and has more depth than other pizza crusts. Â You can read about their crust on the menu. Â I love that my fiancee and I can go in and get a small pizza and two side salads for around $20, depending on the type of pizza we order. Â Sometimes it's a little more, but always totally worth it! Â If cheap pizza in large quantities is what you want, stick with the chains in the area (believe me...we do that sometimes, too!) Â But for a good quality, grown-up pizza for a more discerning palate, you can't go wrong with Mellow Mushroom.
Review Source:Mellow Mushroom is my favorite pizza place in Carmel. If it was up to me, my office would always order their pizza from here instead of Bellacino's.
I love the hippie vibe inside the restaurant. There's a huge mural on the wall depicting psychedelic 60s music and culture which is entertaining to look at while eating. Unfortunately it's a draw for families with loud and annoying children, but that's not something I can change. I'd say that's the only real drawback I've encountered.
My step-mom is gluten free, so I tried some of the gluten free pizza and I weirdly liked it a lot. Don't knock it until you try it. They also have a lot of options for veggie pizzas, which is a huge plus for me. And it's all very reasonably priced with great service. Win!
What a delicious pizza restaurant! Very unique, too. The inside is decorated beautifully and the food was amazing. We went here on a group work lunch and I couldn't have been happier with the outcome. The service, atmosphere, food, and interior were all perfect.
I ordered the small, 10-inch Magical Mystery Tour pizza, which was perfectly sized and tasted spectacular. This pizza consisted of a pesto base with button and Portobello mushrooms, feta and mozzarella cheeses, spinach, jalapenos, on a brown pesto crust. It was delicious and spicy. After about the second piece, I started to feel the heat. The crushed red pepper probably didn't help either. My coworkers ordered combinations of avocado hoagies with seasoned avocado, onions, Provolone, mayo, lettuce, Roma tomatoes, topped with sprouts, and a house calzone. They also have a great lunch special that includes a drink, two slices of pizza, and a salad of your choice. To start the meal, we ordered the pretzel appetizer, and they were unbelievable. They were big, doughy, and delicious, and came with your choice of garlic butter, marinara sauce, or cheese sauce. There are six of these big pretzels. What I found really interesting about this pizzeria is that they have a great selection of craft beer! If you're in Carmel and looking for great pizza, definitely visit Mellow Mushroom.
After raving recommendations from my co-workers, I thought I'd go out of my way after work to get this "awesome" pizza at Mellow Mushroom.
Initial thought as I picked up my pizza at the counter. I can imagine a hipster in super-flared bell-bottoms walking in bare-footed with hairy armpits, stoned, hallucinating at the thoughts of flower-power, peace-signs, and magic mushrooms. Ok...well...that doesn't fit my self-description. Har har.
I really wanted to love the pizza, but I was sorely disappointed. I didn't see what was so special between Mellow's vs. other pizza joints (unless you spiked it with some magic mushrooms maybe). If I went to Papa Johns, Donatos, Pizza Hut...I could get boxes and more boxes of pizzas for $30. Nothing to rave about, just a mediocre pizza with no pizzazz.
Credits to the ultra-fresh ingredients, but the pizza dough was just too chewy for my liking and it reheated to a soggy-mess in the oven. Perhaps if I ate in next time, I'd be able to enjoy it fresh in this cool-vibed atmosphere.
Fabulous pizza. crazy fun environment. I wouldn't waste my time on the pretzels...they're just basic breadsticks folded into the pretzel shape. We took 2 small children and had a great time--not too fancy, family friendly. Pizza was a tad on the expessive side, but well worth it!
They have an impressive "on tap" list, including daily specials.
We'll definitely go back!
Come stoned, come sober, it doesn't matter much because the pizza here is outstanding no matter where your mind is. As the name might imply, this place is any classic hippie's magical, mystical fantasy adventure in a tricked-out VW bus through a tie-dyed cloud of magic and pot smoke to a land overflowing with delicious pizza with extra mushrooms (if you know what I'm sayin').
The campy, sometimes phallic art is technically awful, but awfully endearing. One bite of the Mad Italian pizza and I can forgive the mural of anatomically atrocious man-shrooms carousing with David Letterman, and most especially the artist's disturbing attempt at a sexy shroom-lady.
They have a wide variety of toppings for the discerning pizza consumer and I was especially impressed by their solid sauce substitutions. Sick of a stock red sauce? Opt for the oil and garlic base and make sure you've securely fastened your seatbelt for the deliciousness that's about to ensue. You really can't go wrong with any of their pre-built pizza choices with such endearing names as "Magical Mystery Tour" and "Kosmic Karma".
Their Red Skin Potato Pie is heart-stoppingly delicious, but make sure you get your Bayer aspirin in before you go; Potatoes, onions, cream, ranch and bacon are taking no prisoners and your arteries and taste buds are probably going to be at odds. Personally, I'll side with my taste buds any time!
The service is always prompt and friendly, the atmosphere perfect for inviting along a few of your closest buddies/dealers. Don't let the tame building facade and yawn-inducing strip mall it's in fool you: the location is unassuming, but the food is amazing.
This is some good pizza fo sho! Â My friend told me there must be something in the crust, and I agree; it's addicting! Â Not literally, of course. Â Hehe. Â I tried the Funky Q Chicken pizza and LOVED it. Â They got the Magical Mystery Tour and Hawaiian and were equally pleased with their picks. Â
If you're with the kids, then you can take them over to watch their pizza being made. Â You can watch them toss the dough and everything. Â Wicked cool, man!
This place is strange. Â Its kinda got the feel of a la Bambas meets Fantasia....the Disney Movie not American Idol contestant. Â Gigantic fiberglass mushrooms, Â trippy murals, and I seem to remember the front of an VW bus....this place has to owned by some former dead heads. Â Game on!
The food was different too. Â The crust was dense and dark. Â I can easily say I've never had crust like this at a pizzeria. Â It looked healthy like maybe they used whole wheat flour. Â The toppings were more familiar. Â We ordered The Mad Italian:Pepperoni, Banana Peppers, Feta. Â It was a greasy little number that was satisfying but not earth shattering. Â
Service was very polite and accommodating.
Mellow Mushroom is one of my top two favorite places to eat in Indianapolis. Granted, I haven't been here long, but I don't foresee my top two shifting anytime soon. Mellow Mushroom is big, accommodating, and fun - oh, and freaking delicious. They have a bunch of vegan options for pizzas too! I've gone three times now and have been absolutely astounded each visit. The pizza is terrific! They've got pizza, sodas, beers, and soft pretzels - how could you go wrong? It's the kind of place you could bring just about anyone to and they could like it.
One con: the waitstuff doesn't write down your order, which when you're piling ingredients onto your pizza, means your pizza pie might end up looking a little different than you anticipated.
I'm just stoked to have such great vegan pizza in Indy.
So I went to the Mellow Mushroom while visiting some family in Orlando. Â OMG I had the potato one...soo good. Â I made everyone go back while we were still in Orlando and got the Holy Shitake Pie. Â Mmmm. Â Anyhow after that I was sad because I thought it was local to Orlando. Â But then I was searching Yelp for somewhere to eat in carmel before our new years laser flash bash and this showed up. Â
I called and made a reservation for ten ppl and everything was no sweat. Â We got our pizza in good order. Â My husband and I are both vegetarian and this place is just great for us, so many options. Also I love their crust, I don't know what they do but its not like regular pizza crust is brown and sweet and delicious. Â
We got the hawaiian with buffalo sauce instead of red sauce, and bbq tofu instead of ham. Â Mmmm delicious. Â I love this place and I love how open they are to ordering crazy things. Â Even my sister who kept saying Oh I don't want pizza I don't want pizza got pizza when she saw all the options. Â Even though she was totally going to get a sandwich...she just had to try it. Â
I will totally be coming back
My order: Called in for pickup a small Margarita pizza on gluten free crust (Mom is gluten free). Oh wait, you can't get a small with gluten free crust. Fine, make it a medium. "That will be $19 (and some change)". Mmmm . . . i think while staring at the online menu. "It says a medium Margarita pizza is $15.99 (a bit pricey I think but the reviews are great and I want to try it)"
"Sorry, sir, it's actually $17.99 before tax. The corporate office hasn't changed the online menu."
Ok, fine.  Even though a 4th grader could change and upload a new .pdf menu in about  10 minutes these days. Whatever, they tell me 20 minutes and it'll be ready.
Pick up the pizza and just out of curiosity I look at the physical menu in the restaurant. Â It also says, medium Margarita pizza $15.99. Â I ask about that and get the same answer i got on the phone. Fine, I'm hungry. Here's $20. Give me my pizza.
The Pizza
It's completely flavorless. No taste to the cheese. I'll forgive the crust. There's maybe a teaspoon of garlic and maybe a tablespoon of olive oil. Neither of which you can taste. Â Then there is only one thin slice of tomato on each slice of pizza and the basil was pretty much non existent.
A huge disappointment all around. Â This pizza was far worse than any frozen pizza I've bought at a store. Â I totally regret not just going into Marsh and buying and Amy's pizza and making it myself for 1/3 of the price.
$20 for a Margarita pizza? Fine, MM, step up your game and quit skimping on the toppings! Your pizza sucks! And it's illegal to advertise things for one price and charge another. Horrible.
The main thing wrong with this small chain, for me, is the over-the-top hippie decor. There's a tie-dyed VW bus in the dining room, a ceiling-high mushroom just inside the door, and goofy cartoony pizza-re-themed paintings. I think kids enjoy it though, and it emphasizes the casual vibe in there.
They have a really nice selection of draft beer (8?), most of it from craft breweries. In Indy the local feature is Upland but different areas will have different selections. When we were there they had Guinness, Sam Adams, Upland Wheat, 2 different Bell's, Magic Hat #9, maybe Blue Moon, and at least one other.
Our server was nice, friendly, and quick. We had the meatball app to start. A slice of fresh mozzarella was the "cream filling" between each half of 3 good-sized meatballs, which were served lollipop style on a bed of tasty marinara, topped with fresh Parmesan curls and shreds of fresh basil. Yum! I would've preferred the meatballs slightly hotter-I think the cheese cooled them down some.
We decided to go with the 10" Hot Potato Pie for $10.99. My partner usually doesn't want to try "weirdly sauced" pizza-any sauce that isn't tomato doesn't belong in his opinion, so it took some convincing. The pizza was fantastic! Mellow Mushroom uses a slightly sweet whole wheat dough-it walks the line between soft and chewy very well. Hot Potato Pie is garlic & olive oil, sliced potatoes, bacon, 2 kinds of cheese, onions, a little zesty ranch, a bit of sour cream on each slice, and a sprinkle of chives. You can watch the cooks hand-stretch the dough and actually see into most of the kitchen. The pizza was delicious and the toppings were applied with care evenly over the pie and none of his onions strayed over onto my half.
I recommend this place, either for families or adults dining without kids. If you don't want to sit around the noise of children, there is a well-separated bar area.
Mellow Mushroom has surprised me. It sits in a shopping center where the vacancy rate is rising, yet I went for lunch on Saturday and they were pretty busy.
For being a pizza chain, they do a pretty good job. The service was good, we got our food pretty quick, and the price was reasonable.
Everytime I go to Mellow Mushroom, I typically get a calzone. The crust is sweet and you can usually be full after eating just half of it. My friend got the 10" Hawaiian and actually thought it was better than his favorite chain pizza place, Bella Pizzeria.
They have a limited delivery area (east of U.S. 31 in Carmel) and limited delivery hours. Overall, Mellow Mushroom is a good place to eat and I hear so many people mentioning how much they like it. Oh yeah, they have TVs and free Wifi, doesn't get better than that!
We went to Carmel this weekend specifically to go to the Mellow Mushroom and we weren't disappointed. Â We ended up eating here twic in two days. Â My friend loves this place and we were celebrating her birthday. Â The olive oil and garlic base is definitely the way to go. Â It's absolutely delicious, whereas the tomato base has a little bit of a weird texture and just isn't quite as good. Â I highly recommend the gluten free crust, though, if you are gluten intolerant. Â It tastes really good! Â
The decor in here is fun. Â It has mushrooms everywhere and a funky mural on the wall.
It was definitely worth the 3 1/2 hour drive. Â I'm sure we will be back.
I was invited here by a friend and let me just say I WILL be returning soon. I had a slice of pizza that was N.Y. style which is to say a huge, floppy, foldable slice of warm-gooey goodness. The dough was obviously made from scratch and the toppings were fresh. I also had a calzone which was HUGE Â and equally amazing. The atmosphere is very family friendly with video games and such for the kids if you have them. Add to that a clean restaurant in a nice area and this place comes up a winner!
Review Source:What style of pizza is this? Everyone seems to have their idea of what pizza "should" be and is "supposed" to be. It's not New York, Chicago, Italian and whatever else you can throw out. You could say it's Atlanta style since Mellow Mushroom did originate there. This like the "Ben & Jerry's" of pizza but, better. The crust is thin, not too thin, made with whole wheat, Parmesan and spring water. The sauce is made with ripe tomatoes. The cheese has flavor. I only top mine with cheese and shrooms.
The only way you could not like this pizza is if you think you are a big pizza snob and you think you know what pizza is and should be. You'd simply not like it for the sake of not liking it. Well, unless you don't like pizza. Saying you don't like pizza is like saying all shades of blue are the same.
I live in Chicago and one of my main points of visiting Indianapolis is Mellow Mushroom as well as Luna Records. I'd trample across a field full of flaming hot Chicago style pizza for just one slice of MM.
There are Mellow Mushrooms all over the South and a few other places and it tastes the same and great no matter which one I visit.
Oh, and don't let the name and the Deadhead look of the place scare you away!
I don't care much for hippies, I always thought they were judgemental and hypocritical jerks. I like the hippie Neil from "The Young Ones" though!
First encountered Mellow Mushroom Pizza in Georgia when we lived there and we became fans. Â We were really pleased to find one in Carmel when we moved here.
Great pizza in a fun psychodelic atmosphere. Â If anyone was familiar with The Flying Tomato in Muncie or Garcia's in Bloomington, think that kind of enviroment. The pizza is completely different though. Â Mellow Mushroom is a thinner crust pizza and has great toppings.
I really love the Zen-ness about this place. Â The staff are very friendly and funny. Â The place reminds me of the 60's (I think that's the idea).
Sandwiches - way cool they have tempeh and tofu sandwiches among their big selection. Â They are delicious.
Pizza - Wow, I was surprised. Â It was delicious. Six of us ordered a different pizza per couple - 3 different pizzas - all wonderful, hot and so good I couldn't believe it. Â
Now I'm a regular and will be as long as they're open. Â Great food, great atmosphere and they won't make you break the bank.
